QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 04:38 PM) Lol, right? Joakim "Thibs if we weren't winning games if would hate you right now" Thibs "Jo, I feel the same way about you" Simmons interviewed him over All-Star break and he basically said this. I don't think they see eye to eye on a lot but they win so it works.

I don't, but that's an argument I did not win with my wife. I despise sitting around a pool or the beach for the day. If i'm on vacation I want to see/experience things I haven't in the past. Laying around for 8 hours, while in theory sounds great, is torture to me. Boredom sets in within the hour. My wife didn't think it would be right to go on a honeymoon and then spend a day apart. So we didn't. I compromised and sat on the beach for a half day, and then we went and did something else. No golf, unfortunately.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) I'm kicking around the idea of renting a jeep...$370 for the week. I'd do a jeep or a convertible of some kind. Car is a must to see everything the island has to offer. Where are you guys staying? No matter where you're at, you should have a blast. Maui is awesome. Oh, and congrats again!

2014 TV thread
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) They're all pretty lawless and fight a lot. That's why it's considered such a miracle that Mance was able to unite any of them. The Thenns are one of the MORE civilized groups up there. I always got the sense that this was all based on what southerners thought, and that when Jon was captured we got the "other side" to the story, i.e., they weren't/aren't as bad as people think they are. In other words, a lot of the bad stuff is just legend that keeps getting passed down from generation to generation, without much proof of it actually happening. But in truth it's been a while since i've read the book so my memory could be wrong. That and when I did read them I often skipped over some of the deep-history sections of some of the chapters.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) The Wildlings are absolute savages. The Thenns were the only ones with some form of hierarchy because they were descendants of the first men. They're still barbarians that rape women. They just do it with primitive armor. I thought they were all descendants of the First Men? IIRC, they were basically Northerners like the Starks who happened to live farther north and were "trapped" when the Wall was built. Over time the people south of the Wall forgot why the Wall was built and so the Wildlings became the threat to the North, not the White Walkers. I never got the sense they were as blood thirsty as they're made out to be in the show. Yes, they're a little rough, and they rape/pillage in villages south of the wall, but I dunno, that always seemed to me to be a small portion of the group, not the general population that Mance is leading.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) The one thing that could contribute to Izzo wanting to jump is that with Harris going pro MSU isn't going to be very good next year (possible tourney team but nothing more) and he has actually struggled recruiting the last couple years so it will be at least a few years before MSU is competing for a Final 4 again. I feel like that was the same argument last time, and then he pulled in guys like Appling, Harris and Payne and almost went to another Final Four this year. edit: well maybe not, Appling/Payne committed the year before he turned down the Cavs offer.

Parker and Wiggins couldn't get their teams to the Final Four this year, not sure why Cliff's addition will make Kansas automatic favorites.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) Jeff Goodman @GoodmanESPN 1h Timberwolves coaching job is officially now open. Two names that will be in the mix, per sources, are Tom Izzo and Fred Hoiberg. I don't see Izzo taking that job unless Love signs an extension or somehow promises he'll stick around. Pretty sure that's why he didn't take the Cleveland job a few years ago.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) Because the book didnt dehumanize them as much as the show is, they also merged like 10 clans into one man-eating one in the show. I agree. I think the various chapters with Jon and Ygritte and Jon and Mance gave them more of a back story that you just don't get from the show. They're not all savages/barbarians. They don't kill for sport, they kill for survival/revenge. At least in the books.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 11:46 AM) You thought Frances McDormand came off as a ditz in the original? See this is where my memory is off and maybe i'm combining the movie and the woman cop in the show. I know she's the one that solves the murder in the movie, but didn't she make dumb statements all the time? Wasn't that her character? I don't remember.

I haven't watched the original in a long time, but is this new TV show supposed to be a remake? Are they changing the story? I noticed the accent of the female cop isn't nearly as strong (although she's still a ditz).

Investing Thread
QUOTE (gatnom @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 05:09 PM) So, do any of you financially savvy people have some investing advice for a guy who is just starting his first real job out of college? Paying back my student loans is my primary priority at the moment, but I'd like to start putting some money aside for retirement etc. sooner rather than later. Any thoughts? What are the rates on your loans? That'll determine what you should do with your extra income. I'm paying back some of mine, but not all. I have loans ranging from 2%, essentially free money, and 6.75%. If you were paying back student loans over the last few years instead of investing you lost about 20% or more on returns.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
They should have gone back to the chief logos. f***ing liberal admins. I dig the silver. I dig the football jerseys. Not crazy about the block I logo, but I'll wait and see what it looks like for real. The pics were at an angle and I want to see it straight on. Overall they didn't screw it up like they did with the awful Giants-style underline logo, but I'm not exactly wowed either.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 11, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) Well, Phil is seeing lots of sand and trees today, and seems to be ticketed for a Friday night flight home. I find it really annoying that the media continues to cover him like he's an actual threat these days. He's been hurt and basically had no chance this week. Even this morning on Sportscenter they were talking about his chances. I get they do it because non-golf fans know who Mickelson is and may tune in because of it, but it's annoying when young guys with actual talent and a chance don't get the coverage they deserve. That's the awesome thing about golf these days. We're over the Tiger Woods era where a single guy dominated the sport for a decade. Now we're beginning a chapter where 10 guys in their 20's are really, really good, and 5-10 guys in their early 30's are really good. Let's promote that instead of boring everyone talking about how Tiger isn't there. f*** that. The tournament is still great without him.- Technology catch-all thread
At this point with the technology you can't just talk about LCD/LED/Plasma and compare them based on the TV-type alone. Each TV is different and unique and comes with certain technology that is going to aid with the picture. It used to be that Plasma's had the best blacks, but LED/LCD's have become much better and unless you're a real videophile I'd be shocked if anyone can really tell the difference without the two tv's being right next to each other (LED/LCD's of good quality I mean. Not the uber-cheap Sams/Costco models) It hasn't been said yet, but also grab a tv without all the extra internet crap on it. The tv companies charge you 2-300 bucks or more for that stuff and really it's not necessary when you can spend $100 on a roku/amazon tv box or $35 on a chromecast. There really is no benefit to having it all built in to the TV. Using my internal samsung stuff takes the same amount of time as my chromecast and the quality is all the same as well.- Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 11, 2014 -> 08:53 AM) You live in Chicago. Always go with amazon unless Costco has a killer deal. You save having to pay the 10 percent sales tax with amazon. The cheap LEDs aren't great with hockey btw. You have to spend a bit to get one that will be satisfactory to you. But you're supposed to report it! This is basically what I have, but a version from 3 years ago. Not sure if anything has changed on it: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Toro-22-in-High...08?N=5yc1vZc5ap I have a little less than half an acre lot with a decent sized deck and patio and a few trees. Takes me about 45-50 minutes to mow everything. I fill up my 5 gallon can of gas and never get through all of it in one season. - 2014 TV thread
