  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 08:33 PM) Groce has never been known as a great regular season coach. My memory sucks, but this is the first time I can remember him losing a game that they should have won easily. NW is f***ing terrible. And they were down a man. Illinois got beat by a JV scrub off the bench. Inexcusable.
  2. Seriously coaching staff, what the f***?
  3. so much for those new foul calls.
  4. Jesus, if you can't make 2 foot shots, you can't win
  5. Lol, yep. They're going to lose this game. Well, it was fun to think they'd be a tourney team for a while.
  6. If Illinois loses this game the honeymoon with Groce is over. He's doing an awful job of running some set plays to get easy buckets.
  7. Well, for the record, I was not (and I think it's common sense that being a slave is worse than not being a slave). I was disagreeing with Balta's "because you're white" comment more than anything. Not all whites were equal either.
  8. For the second time, where did I say they were the same? Or equal?

  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 12:16 PM) They had easy mode compared to blacks, so my point stands. My family came over turn of the century, my grandfather/grandmother were the first born in America on both sides. 2 parts Russian immigrant, 1 part Irish/Italian, 1 part Scandanavian. People have been discriminated against in this country since the Mayflower. Which is why its so sick that so many Americans continue to this day to discriminate against Americans and blame immigrants for our problems. Youd think as the children of discriminated immigrants we would all work together to ensure that all immigrants can come to the US and be free from persecution and discrimination, because we understand their pain. Oh what a world that would be. So yah, you are right, they were discriminated against, but not nearly to the level of other cultures, specifically not white. No one claimed otherwise. You basically agree with my original post, despite writing 500 words claiming to disagree with it.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 12:00 PM) The Bulls have a President of Player operations who punched out a coach. Their medical staff nearly killed a player. The GM fired the coaches favorite assistant for talking s*** at a local charity event. They are not a well run organization. They do have a good mascot. Of the big market franchises they're top 3. I'd only put LA and Boston in front of them.
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) Im Irish, youre not exactly making a great case here. And being white doesnt give you privilege, but it certainly gave the opportunity to become extremely wealthy. Which is exactly what I said. Being a white male is easy mode, if you cant make it in easy mode, you probably cant beat the game in any mode. Why do you keep referring to the present? Can we stay within the confines of the original argument please? I'm not talking about 2014 whites, i'm talking turn of the century Irish (you know, the time period that Duke and Balta were talking about). They didn't have an "easy mode" when they got here. They were discriminated against. As were the Polish and Germans and Jews and ... To make a broad statement that to be "white" in the early 20th century was enough is just factually incorrect.
  13. Why on earth would Thibs want to go to a dysfunctional organization with old players and zero future prospects? He'll bite his lip and continue working for one of the better run (even if too conservative) organizations in the league.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) Reminds me of this awesome onion article. Lol, accurate. I still don't understand the love for her.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) Yeah being an underpaid immigrant is equivalent to being a slave!!! s*** my ancestors were Jews escaping pogroms in Russia, But ya know what, however s***ty it was to be in America it was millions of times better than being in a country where they could kill you for no reason or any reason. Its way better than being property. So no its not ignorant, its just calling a spade a spade. When immigrants came to America they came by choice, and most of them were escaping conditions that were worse than in America. IE Would my great grandmother rather starve in Ireland or be underpaid in the US? Would my great grandfather rather be murdered in Russia or underpaid in America... Now yes there were some Irish slaves way back in the day, if youre family was actually an indentured servant in America you can compare yourself to a slave. Otherwise this is really just bad form. Americans like Duke are seriously the worst of the worst. They live in a fantasy world (the US) and complain about how hard it is. This is not hard. Being a white man in the US is not hard. Its playing the game on easy mode, and if you cant beat it, thats on you. Ok, where did I say it was equivalent? I'll i'm saying is "you're white" isn't a really good response because being white didn't guarantee you a life of privilege in this country for a long period of time. Irish coming off the boats were segregated and not given employment for being dirty Irish. Yes, they came here of their own free will, and they weren't killed for escaping bondage, but that doesn't mean they weren't discriminated against.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:23 AM) Only attractive people should be nude!!!!! I don't watch the show. Tried but hated it. I think it's more that the nudity isn't really necessary or part of the creative image of the show. At least that seemed like the point the reporter was getting at when he asked her the question. I gave it 2 episodes and was disgusted by her and hated the characters. My wife hate watches it but also made the comment before that she's naked all the time for no reason other than to be naked.
  17. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 04:57 PM) Not really. Jordan has kind of played his post Bulls career rather poorly similar to what Dick Butkus did with the Bears. You kind of need to be involved in this day and age to keep the buzz going. Other than his divorce and his house being for sale he is a ghost to Chicago. LeBron can come in with Rose stock as low as it could possibly get. At this point Rose would be second fiddle to Lebron. OK? That doesn't mean Lebron will ever touch MJ on the scale of most important and favorite player in franchise history. MJ made the bulls. MJ made the modern NBA. That will not be forgotten in my lifetime, regardless of what Lebron does. Plus Lebron's legacy will always be connected to MJ because people want to compare the two. And unless he wins 6-7 titles, he'll always be considered a step below him.

Lena Dunham apparently went off on a reporter who had the gall to ask her why she's naked all the time in her show. About time someone told her to cover up. Yuck.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 08:39 AM) Of course you don't give a S***. You're white. Just so it's said, this is pretty ignorant of discrimination to "whites" in this countries history. Irish, Italian, Polish, German, etc. Everyone has someone in their family that suffered from some kind of discrimination at some point. Slavery is obviously the extreme, but lets not pretend life was all peaches and cream for immigrants in the "golden age" of America either.
  20. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) And Warriors interested in Hinrich. Trade Dunleavy and Kirk for picks. Build as many draft assets as you can to package for better picks/players. Only one I can see is dethroning Jordan in his own city. He'd have to win 6-7 titles. And even then I don't know that he would.
  21. Just started Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. George Washington's Secret Six is next (soon to be a TV show on AMC I believe).
  22. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) Speaking of Max Payne 3. I bought it back in October when Rockstar was doing a "Preorder GTA 5 and get 75% off all Rockstar games". So I bought it for like $5 back then. I've played the game once and never since. The controls were just too weird and the "play 5 minutes, watch 5 minutes" aspect never got me involved in the game. I think I played for about 2 hours. In the 10 minutes I played, I fear that I will have the same issue. I just don't have the patience to get into games like I used to. I need to get in and out. It's really sad growing old and losing that video game love. I used to be able to play WoW or SimCity or whatever for hours and hours on end. Now I can barely sit for an hour.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 12:16 PM) China though is comparable in size to the U.S. and has obstacles that in some cases make ours look small and weak. They're getting it done better than we are also. Whether it's mountains or size of the country or climate conditions or a tongue of the ocean, other countries keep doing this and we can't. Most of China's major cities are on one side of the country though. We're spread out in every direction. Plus, China is, generally speaking, building from scratch. We're updating/modernizing. And this sort of ignores the economic differences. China's propping up its economy with all this building, and when its done, the whole thing will come crashing down.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:48 AM) I think a lot of them can. Japan, for example, is a geographic nightmare. UK/France has a large salt water body between them. This is one place where you might be able to blame a lot of government-related things so you should like it. It's insanely expensive to build infrastructure in the U.S. compared with the rest of the world. Building the same train in the U.S. costs like 3x or more what it costs in Japan, and they're a much bigger earthquake risk to boot. It's probably a lot of factors. Local/provincial issues (I'm not moving my house!), tax issues, feifdoms, environmental requirements, lots of power in the hands of local issues/leaders (my richest constituents use that road every day, how can you put a train line across it), unions, the federal/state budgeting processes, and I'm sure you can add to it. Of course, one counter-point is that it might be easiest to make things like that happen in a country with an extremely strong central government that can shove people out of the way...which fits very well with why China is able to pull off a variety of projects like this today at dramatically lower costs than we can. That may not be the model we want to follow either. Japan is how big compared to the US though. And it certainly doesn't have the sprawling suburban model that we do. UK/France it took one tunnel. You're not building 1000-3000 mile lines like you would here. The bolded paragraph is also a huge issue. How long did it take to get the pink line up and running here in Chicago? And the infrastructure was basically already there. I'm not saying it can't or shouldn't be done, but I just don't think our situation is comparable to anywhere else.
