Comparing Bush and Obama
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) But for that President in particular, I can point to at least 1 of his disasters and say "This was entirely his choice, to the letter". You can spread blame around for the economic crash, 9/11, the drowning of an American city, the debacle in Afghanistan to some degree, the surveillance state, but his policies definitely played into all of those. But the Iraq war, why-ever it was launched (a book is coming out soon/just came out trying to puzzle that out and still coming up with no good answer)...that was 100% his choice. How that war was planned, the torture campaign, the details...in 30 years historians will be telling that story as "his war" and "his failure" because it was. It may not have been at the level of the second world war, but that was just about the second longest war in American history. 9/11 and Katrina were partially the fault of Bush policies? Really? And Iraq is still no Vietnam. Just add it to the list of failed US military intervention. That's how it will be viewed in the eyes of history.

*Irrational Bears Fan Post* They still can make the playoffs. f*** Cutler, McCown is more than adequate for the job. Briggs is back in 2 weeks. The rest of the schedule is doable to get 4 or 5 wins. Bal, St. Louis, Minn, Dallas, Cle, Philly and GB. Where's the high powered offense in that group? Dallas and GB with Rodgers. That's about it.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Nov 10, 2013 -> 08:31 PM) 8 assists tonight, people. Might be right as of this second. Nunn will get mixed in when he learns how to play defense. Until he gets that, he won't see anything. Right now it's not good. LaTulip = when we need some threes/guards in foul trouble/breather/at end of game he should be getting the ball to make free throws. Lastly, I pray Egwu has learned how to not foul this year, because we are thin as hell up front. I know it's only been 2 games, but the offense runs a LOT better with Tate out there. Significantly better. Abrams still makes freshman mistakes with the ball and isn't much of a threat offensively unless he can drive to the hoop. Bertrand looked great, although he showed these flashes last year. He followed it up with a week of nothing. Hopefully he'll embrace the role of being "the" guy and keep this up. If so I like Illinois' chances of getting back to the tournament.- OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 12:38 PM) Duke has been one of the more open-minded about this issue, as he acknowledged that healthcare almost violates free market principles. You can't be a rational chooser when it's your life on the line. What's the price for that? Let's ask Friedrich Hayek, the most influential economic libertarian of all time: Isn't that the system we have right now? QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 8, 2013 -> 01:47 PM) I find it interesting how much people believe the President should be personally involved in. What level of involvement should the President have had in designing and writing the code for the website? Did he personally look over the code and approve it? When you (1) are the public face of the bill and the debate leading up to its passage, (2) make promises/assurances about the bill that you know aren't true, (3) oversaw its implementation and (4) hired/appointed those in charge of that implementation, you deserve everything coming your way.- Catch-All Anything Thread

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) If you actually gave everyone an ID that works then it isn't voter suppression. That's the trick - you make sure that the group you don't want to vote has an ID that doesn't work. That's why gun licenses work and school ID's don't. Poor people can't pick up their ID's, poor people don't have mail boxes, some poor people don't have homes. Trust me, if a Republican came up with this IDea you'd find some way that it's discriminatory towards a portion of the population that votes D.- 2013-2014 NFL Thread

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) A couple friends of mine and I have been kicking around an idea for a Constitutional Amendment to drastically overhaul our election system. We understand the likelihood of actually passing such an amendment is pretty much zero, but there is some good political discussion here so we'd like some input as to whether these changes would improve anything: 1) Presidential term is increased from four to six years, with a one term limit. Election years will be years evenly divisible by six. 2) Senate terms remain six years, but election years will be changed such that each state will have one Senate election in years evenly divisible by six and one in years evenly divisible by three but not by six. 3) House of Representatives terms are increased from two to three years, with election years in every year evenly divisible by three. 4) All changes in 1) through 3) above shall be effective in the first year evenly divisible by twelve that is at least four years later than the date of the ratification of the amendment. 5) For the purposes of Congressional apportionment and the drawing of districts, residents of the District of Columbia shall be considered residents of Maryland. The decennial redistricting of House districts must be done by using a Congressionally approved algorithm that makes districts as compact as possible and does not take into account demographic data that may determine likely voter affiliation. This change shall be effective for the first election year after the next release of Decennial Census data that is at least two years later than the date of ratification of the amendment. 6) Candidates for all Senate and House seats shall be determined via an open primary, with the top two recipients, regardless of party affiliation, advancing to the general election. The date of the primary for all Senate and House seats in all states shall be the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May, and this date shall be a Federal Holiday. States that hold primary elections or caucuses for the office of President and/or any state/local offices must also hold them on this day. 7) Election Day shall remain the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, but it shall now be a Federal Holiday. 8) Congress shall provide funding for and set standards by which states must create and issue, free of charge, photo identification cards that will be available to all citizens who are 18 years of age or older. These identification cards shall serve as a voter registration and entitle the holder the right to vote in all elections. 9) All changes in 6) through 8) above shall be effective in the first year that is at least two years later than the date of ratification of the amendment. Pssh, trying to suppress the vote. Typical liberal. Like the one term president idea. Don't like increasing terms for legislators. Don't like the open primary and top 2 candidates advance idea. Give the other side a chance at least. And I really like #7. The rest, eh. No hard feelings one way or the other.- NBA Thread 2013-2014

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) Isn't Narcisse the owner of the Cotton Club and other larger, more established venues? I thought he also had most of the major talent under contract unless I'm mistaken. I think he is a talent promoter/manager, but I don't see how that changes things. I mean, the club appeared to be doing well before he came along and inserted himself into the situation. And if he was a rival club owner, taking him out might be good for business. Seems to me Nucky just doesnlt want to get involved, but that's not really a good explanation for why he won't give Chalky approval to take him out.- NBA Thread 2013-2014

QUOTE (KG#1 @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 10:40 AM) Even though the show is by no means the same old HIMYM, I still enjoy it. Not a popular thought, but I think Ted is the best character and just really can't wait to see how it all wraps up. Like Sepinwall said, I am getting sick of the same Farhampton scenes and wish it was at least somewhat back to normal. Masters of Sex is nearing must-watch territory for those needing a new show. The T-n-A is great, but the characters and various story lines are actually pretty engaging. Boardwalk is/has been awesome this season. I don't get the people who complain that nothing happens. Everything is a set-up, just like the Sopranos. And the sets/costumers are awesome. The biggest problem with the Bulls, and it's been a problem for a long time, is the team is full of jump shooters. Rose is the only guy that can create off the dribble. Neither Boozer or Noah are post players, the get their points on jump shots and put backs. So when the team can't make shots, they lose. And that problem is made worse when they get beat on the boards. I don't see how this problem rectifies itself. In the past they had guys like Korver, Rip and Nate that could stretch the floor and actually make baskets. Dunleavy isn't really the guy to do that.- Catch-All Anything Thread
