QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 15, 2013 -> 10:59 AM) You call your contacts on your phone. I feel like this was never really explained, but that's what you do. Call up Simeon, Gerald, Ron, Lester, Martin, or whoever else you may have available. Once it rings it will say "REQUEST JOB", and then select that. About 5 seconds later they will send you a text message with the job. Those are the real missions for online, not that stupid deathmatch s*** or skydiving or races. Those are mini-games. I tried it last night and finally got some "missions," like stealing meth or destroying evidence. I still don't have any big heists available yet, but we're all in the 6-8 level range. Maybe we have to be higher. Rockstar makes great games, but their interface, mixed with the explanation for the interface, is just horrible.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:41 AM) My grandfather went a year and a half after my grandmother passed. He also was one of the bad ass people I have ever met, he lost half of his left leg to a bomb in WWII in Germany. I never heard the man complain once about his leg, or having to care for my grandmother when things started to go south. Once their partner goes, the air is let out of the balloon for them. Yeah you hear stories all the time about people that have been married for 60+ years and when one of them goes, the next one goes like hours later.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:47 AM) Well, I think the original drafters were smart enough to understand that there would be debates over the language of a particular law or amendment (as they themselves had these arguments) and that they knew the language of the 14th amendment was broad and would likely be understood to protect different things in the future. But based on past statements, Scalia doesn't believe that. He believes that the 14th was specifically about the racial oppression faced by black people from white people. edit: I guess it's important to read that Scalia is saying "we," meaning the SC both past and present, have held that it says one thing, not that he necessarily agrees or accepts with all past decisions on the EPC. What it's "about" and what the ultimate effect is are two different things though.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:37 AM) Name a worse one. It's a night of the people who are supposed to be skeptical of government, the people who are supposed to be the oversight of government, laughing it up, celebrating, and drinking alongside government. Making jokes about how the WMD's aren't over here. It's a celebration of everything that is wrong with Washington. I was pointing it out more for you saying a particular Washington party was the worst Washington party "in the country." I knew what you meant though.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:36 AM) Seems like she was trying to make an originalist plea to Scalia? Originalism doesn't mean you ignore the language of an amendment. His arguments re: originalism derive from modern courts trying to spin the language into something the original drafters never intended. The legislative process should be used for that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:03 AM) Great sounding quote there. Real dignified. To be fair, the attorney arguing was completely ignorant, starting off her argument by stating that the purpose behind the 14th amendment was to protect minorities from the majority: That was a good read, btw, if anyone has time. It's an interesting case. Is it constitutional to pass a constitutional amendment that takes race completely out of the equation when the state decides certain matters (including university enrollment, contracts, etc.).

I had to watch my grandmother go through Alzheimer's. It was like 8 years of a slow decline to the point where she didn't know anyone but my mom and her two siblings. Everyone else was a complete stranger and she couldn't remember conversations from 30 minutes prior. It was heart breaking. My grandfather, one of the strongest, most bad ass people i've ever met in my life, withered away to nothing in like 2 months from pancreatic cancer. At least he lived a full life up until that point and then went quickly. Death sucks.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
QUOTE (farmteam @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:14 AM) "Another rule that should clearly benefit the offense and is likely to increase scoring is the block-charge call, which now states that a defensive player is not permitted to move into the path of an offensive player once he has begun his upward motion with the ball to attempt a field goal or a pass. Previously, the player had to be in legal guarding position when the offensive player lifted off the floor. "There will be no more flopping," Calipari said. Adams said that the referees get more than 90 percent of all calls correct, but that number was at about 65 percent last season with regard to block-charge calls. "It's a tough play and it happens incredibly quickly," Adams said. "A big reason for the change was aimed to help the officials get the call right." Not only will it give the referees a little more time, but it should also favor the offensive player." Thank. God.

Government Shutdown on the clock thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 15, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) Do you think that they just miscalculated and thought Obama would give in? The most frustrating part of this for me is I just cant see the strategy. I wouldnt mind it as much if I really believed that Republican voters wanted the reps to do this. That is the point of representation. But this time I just feel like a certain few are doing what they want and dont really give a damn about anyone else. The crazy far right Reps live in crazy far right districts so they don't give a s***. Their constituents love this. I think it was Gawker or Slate that looked at those 9 guys and they all lived in heavy Republican districts. Even if you're not thrilled with what they're doing, you're probably not going to be swayed into voting for the other party. I don't get why the rest of the house repubs don't call these guys morons and distance themselves as far as possible. Instead, they're publicly supporting them. And I agree. I don't get the strategy. I would have let Obamacare fail (as it will) and then use that in the next election.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 04:33 PM) For an office that small isnt exchange a bit expensive? For most outsourced email you can stop attachments at the source and even keep those that dont need to download files off your local server. I've seen it in google where admins or people who dont know any better can only open in google docs. I think we went with exchange just because it was the easiest option to get all of our docs remotely either via phone or at a home computer. We've had it for years though and I never was part of that decision. On a different "note," anyone have a Samsung Note phone? I noticed the 3 came out recently and I'm in the market for a new phone. Wondering if the size would be cool or a pain.

My group still has difficulty figuring out how the hell to start missions. Do you have to bum around for a while before they're available? Right now all we have available are the games - races, team deathmatch, etc. I think i've done one or two car pickups. But nothing like what you are describing.

Sad story in Oak Lawn...
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) Would be interesting to see how Jenks responds to this because he is more economically driven, and I presume the main reason for not going for the conviction is that economically it makes no sense to spend thousands of tax payer dollars on a verdict that is redundant. So Ill put it back in your hands. Should the govt spend tax payer dollars on court cases that are redundant (Ie the convict is already going to be executed/life in jail)? My answer is that depends on what you believe the justice system is built for. I do not believe its built for vengeance, or at least I hope that its not. I want to believe that it is built as a deterrent and that the hope is that no one will ever break the law, and if they do we are forced to punish them, but not because it makes us feel good about doing it. So based on my belief, Id say if hes already being executed/life imprisonment, it probably doesnt make much sense to spend lots of time and money on another conviction, even if that means the victims family/friends wont get the closure that they want. Yeah I mean there should be a finding that he did it, and maybe there's a quick way to do that without needing a full trial for the sake of the victims, but there's no point going through a whole trial just to add 100 years to a 1000 year sentence.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) A friend of a friend waited something like two years, half of that in jail before his family could scrape together bail, for his murder trial (drunken brawl gone bad). I think it was just because Cook County has such a ridiculous backlog. But, FWIW, in cases like that, it's arguably the accused's right to a speedy trial that's being violated. Yeah that's totally unacceptable if the state was delaying it simply for being backlogged. What was the result? Or is it still going on?

Sad story in Oak Lawn...
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) No your first part isnt logical. Living in pain is not = to living. This is why people commit suicide (like many prisoners) because it offers an escape from pain. Most people can not handle living in a cell for a night, let alone for years. No longer allowed to live presumes that living in and of itself is better than dieing, which I dont agree with. As for its a waste of money/resources. Sure, if you just want to look at economically and not have punishment be part of it. I can obviously understand that if its truly cheaper. (edit) And best judicial system 100 years ago??? Were black people and women even allowed to testify back then? (Its sad that this is both a joke and serious question) I think it's a leap to assume that jail time = pain. It's not ideal, but it's not the worst thing in the world. You have amenities to get by. You have food. You have shelter. You may get visitors. It absolutely sucks and would be horrible and I personally wouldn't last a day. But death, to me, would be worse. If there's an after-life, i'm going to hell faster than I would have if I had spent 50 years in jail. If there's no after-life, my existence is over. And punishment is a part of it. A huge part. But the other significant factor for me is that it's also a complete waste of resources to keep such a horrible person living. That's a valid point re: blacks/women. But the world was on more or less equal footing in that respect 100 years ago. So it was still one of, if not the, best in the world at the time.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 03:36 PM) Are all u guys attorneys? So nothing can be improved in our judicial system?? It's perfect as it, with all these delays in cut and dried cases?? This is a family murder where EVERYONE agrees she is guilty including her. As a taxpayer I happen to be appalled at all the delays. Where are the rights for the gawddarn victims???? Tell me please. I agree with you that we can make improvements. We still had the best judicial system 100 years ago and it didn't take 10 years and 2-3 appeals for someone to get sentenced. Now, that's a rarity, but it shouldn't happen.

Sad story in Oak Lawn...
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) If you believe in punishment she has a reason to be on this earth. Being in jail for the rest of your life is worse than falling asleep. Either way she dies, if youre right and bad things happen to her for the rest of eternity, she just delayed it for X years. If Im right and nothing bad happens when she dies, then at least we didnt give her a get out of jail free card. Im just not sure how anyone who wants vengeance and punishment doesnt agree with this. They are always going to die, but you only have X years on this earth when you know theyll be tortured. I know it sick and twisted, but its logical. If you view living as more important than death, it's not a get out of jail free card. She's no longer allowed to live a life. That's worse than dying now and having no after life, and no worse than dying now and living eternity in hell. That's just as logical. But really my view on this comes down to it being a waste of money/resources keeping her alive.

- Sad story in Oak Lawn...
I agree emotionally with Greg here. If this lady admits to it and pleads guilty, get that life long cell ready for next week. There's no point in clogging up court dockets with a case like this. But, if she doesn't confess and/or wants to put up a defense of some kind (insanity probably), she has the right to do so and you have to respect the process. Greg, it's not like this lady is leaving a cell except to go to court. Edit: By the way, she should be taken out back and shot and/or subject to the gallows as soon as her guilt/confession is confirmed. This is precisely the type of heinous crime that deserves death, not life in prison. This lady killed an infant with a sledgehammer, and because the kid wasn't dead enough, she slit the kid's throat. She has no reason being on this earth anymore.- 2013 TV Thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) That Irish chick is going to kill someone important as a Zombie. Just watch. I thought the same thing. Here's what I didn't understand about that whole scene -- 2013 TV Thread
Nothing new ever happens to the main cast. Rick is torn about something. The dude in the motorcycle is a bad ass. Carol likes him. The old Doc provides some advice via analogies. Glen and his gf suffer grief but hug it out. Carl lost the hat but now has too much hair, etc. The zombies are always good, and they were again tonight. But everything else is such crap in this show. The entire aside with Rick and the irish chick - what did that accomplish? What message was delivered there that we didn't already cover 4 times in prior seasons? Zombie apocalypses suck and you have to do awful things to survive? Hmm, that's new. I watch because the zombie kills are always excellent, but man it's upsetting that this show can't raise the bar a little bit. The governor was the best part of the show so far and i'm sure he won't be back until the end of the season (if ever). - Sad story in Oak Lawn...
