  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 11:19 AM) Someone read my post! http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2013/07/10/ill...icago-violence/ Funny that she called Rahm, Ron. And she's from Chicago. Sigh, and then she turns crazy: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/07/19/sta...mL7mNSCR8.email That's right, i'm not saying the CPD are killing those black kids. But i'm also not NOT saying they're killing those black kids.
  2. Ha, yeah that seems about right.
  3. I started a rewatch of The Sopranos on my commute home last week. Holy crap is it dated (1999). Tony's suburban, Meadow's computer, etc.
  4. Yeah I got that a few days ago. That guys a rapper though, not even the same guy. HOWEVA, it is true that the media used/keeps using those pictures of Martin when he was 12 years old. Easier to sell the "little boy eating skittles gets killed by a racist vigilante with a gun" storyline.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 09:12 AM) Hate all you want, I love me some Suits. The Bridge was good last night. Better than the premiere, and Kruger's character was way less annoying. The wifey and I got around to watching the premiere last night. Kind of a meh. Not sure that the story interests me enough to keep watching. Given the talk of Kruger's character, I was expecting her to be really annoying, but she didn't really bother me that much. I guess i'm used to the "focused, driven and emotionally disconnected" detective character from prior tv shows/movies, so despite being a little socially awkward she didn't seem that abnormal to me.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 04:56 PM) Loved our Ford Escape Hybrid, but they stopped making them (if you are going new). If it is a second, commuter car... consider an electric maybe. Leaf or something. Big tax rebates on them, and if it is just a get-around car, and the range covers your usual needs (with room to spare - make sure), they are super-cheap to operate. I wouldn't recommend it if it is your only car though. Prius are of course good cars. We liked the hybrid Focus, we test drove one a while ago. Never drove the Hyundai. And I know you have kids, so... check the leg room and measure. That was a big criteria for us. I've looked at the Leaf and the Volt and I'm a little nervous buying the 1st/2nd generation of new models. I remember when I was sitting in them I didn't think they'd be very user-friendly for getting a one year old in and out of a back seat.
  7. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 04:41 PM) The Focus and the Sonata were my top 2 choices when I was looking. I ended up with the Sonata and it's been great for me. The biggest difference was the 100,000 mile warranty. Ford only had 60,000. Yeah, Hyundai clearly has the best warranty out of all the manufacturers. They also have a lifetime warranty on all of the battery/hybrid equipment, whereas Ford's is only 8 years, 100k miles. But, it gets worse gas mileage (36/40 v. the Fusion's 47/47) and generally the reviews seem to think the Fusion drives a lot better. Was there anything else besides the warranty that tipped the scale for you? I remember the Sonata felt a little cramped at the auto show (i'm a bigger guy, 6 foot, 230), but it's been a while and it's not going to be my car so i'm sure it'll be fine for my wife. Financing might ultimately make the decision for me. Ford is at 1.9% for 60 months and Hyundai is 0%. After buying my Ford Escape at 0% i'm a little spoiled in that regard and feel a little "insulted" that I can't get 0% for a new car.
  8. Recently I've been trying to find a hybrid for my wife. Debating between the Ford Focus, Prius V and Hyundai Sonata. It'd be mostly a commuter car for her, with the need to be big enough to put a car seat (or two in the future) in the back and haul a kid to/from things. I've read up on all three models but haven't driven any yet, though I did sit in them at the auto show. Anyone have any of these models or know people that have them?
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:57 PM) Oh, I wasn't talking about investing like with municipal bonds, I meant like if I was looking to start a business or expand. I could get a bunch of property in Detroit for dirt cheap (cheaper than now) and do whatever I wanted with it. Ah. Well that might be worth it. But I dunno, it's pretty dirt cheap now isn't it?
  10. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) Isn't it pretty much the whole point of filing for bankruptcy to answer a question like that? It's used to wipe the slate clean, yes, but often times the businesses that file are failing so badly they just end up back in debt and close shop anyway. Or even more often, they clean their books of debt and then find a bigger buyer to take the business. That's why I'm wondering if tons of investment is really worth it here. You're basically asking Detroit to take out a loan the first day of being debt free. Their pension system, which I think is constitutionally protected from becoming an "unsecured" debt (i.e., they won't take pennies on the dollar), is underfunded by like 10 billion.
  11. If they can't meet revenue requirements now, what makes you think they'll do it in the future to pay these bond-like instruments? Will bankruptcy get them out of the red?
  12. Not according to CLC: http://www.clc.com/Clients.aspx Ohio State, Oregon, USC, etc. And the Big Ten isn't listed as a conference.
  13. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 04:48 PM) EA just put out a statement: What they're not telling you is that some of the bigger schools are not part of the CLC. Ohio State for example. And some conferences, like the Big Ten, are also not part of the CLC. So, in theory, specific conferences or teams could demand quite a bit for the game to use its marks. If EA doesn't get them, and those fans don't buy the game, how long does this last?
  14. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) Why cant they break it down and say (and since neither of us have read the article who really knows where it goes): "Regardless, nothing that happened in his life should have lead him to do what he did and he will soon find out that there is nothing glamorous about a life without parole." For all I know someone reads that article and decides against doing something stupid because they dont want to spend the rest of their life in a cell. Read the article. No one is walking away from it that way. It ends with a story about him crying for 2 days in the hospital. The only mention of his potential punishment is on the last page.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) It's not really like that. I'll sound like a professor or something describing it but a whoooooooooooooole lot of them hate us but only a percentage actually support any kind of violence and only a relative handful actually are willing to be the ones to act. Like a big social matrix, and there's a series of catalysts to put a person on that path. It's not always obvious. In fact it almost never is. The more you break it down, the more sympathetic and understanding they seem. This entire piece reads: "perfect little angel from a broken home and no country leans on his only role model, a more and more devout Muslim seeking jihad." They're painting a portrait of a kid who had no choice but to murder people.
  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) Terrorism isn't a complex issue? Not sure you can get more complex than that Sometimes it's really not. Sometimes it's just people hate other types of people and are willing to act on it. Articles like this make these douchebags victims, not terrorists. It's disgusting that this asshole has little teeny bopper followers that SUPPORT him. And this type of article just furthers that nonsense.
  17. Response from Rolling Stone: WTF is complex about this tragedy? Are they going to say he was a victim of American commercialism or something? Edit: yep, that's exactly what they're doing: Oh, poor baby. Clearly the answer is terrorism.
  18. One could argue the difference in publishing is that Manson was actually a recorded musician before hitting the cover. But I agree with the fauxoutrage point. This is just helping Rolling Stone sell magazines.
  19. Nice PR move for CVS
  20. They had 8 top ten picks in the draft and like 4 top fives since 2000. And this is what we've got. That's pretty terrible drafting IMO.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 05:01 PM) Everyone has racist prejudices and biases. That doesn't mean racism has no meaning or that every opinion about race is racist. That doesn't follow at all. Racist and racism are emotionally charged words with historical context. If all stereotyping based on race is racist, then just call it stereotyping. Why add the negative (and quite damning) connotation?
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) Race-based stereotypes and prejudices are racist. So again, using that definition everyone is racist, every opinion about race is racist, and now racism has no meaning. That is absurd.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:31 PM) See, in one post you tell me that I 'scream racism!' too much and in the very next post you try to justify racial stereotyping black men in hoodies. Hey, if you keep calling it racial stereotyping and not racism, you and I can be in agreement.
  24. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) Poor white people and hispanics are also unfairly stereotyped. Interesting that it's "stereotyped" instead of being victims of racism. I don't pretend it doesn't exist. I know it does. I've seen it and heard it in cases i've worked where people still believe other races are subhuman and beneath them. THAT is racism. I don't buy your version where if you think of one race differently from your own you're automatically a racist. Really you're just complaining about prejudices and stereotypes that EVERYONE has about other races and other types of people who are not themselves.
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:21 PM) Well, at the risk of sounding racist, in my limited observation, I see more of those certain people wearing them with the hood over their head and/or face then your typical suburban soccer mom. Bill Belichik wears his while he is coaching football, and not walking down the street on his phone. Even still, he actually is teased about it quite a bit. I agree with you that people see the person wearing the piece of clothing and allow it to influence their opinion of them, but it isn't entirely because of the person wearing it. It's how they wear it, where they wear it, when they wear it, AND, the associations that already existed prior to when that group of certain people really began wearing it as a fashion statement. If we start seeing middle aged white guys committing lots of crime while wearing hoodies on the nightly news, i'm sure society would respond the same way.
