QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) Do you have another car already with a gas engine? If you do then I think you should seriously consider the leaf. Take the time and figure out...how often do you actually drive more than 75 miles in a day? And keep in mind you're burning very little power if you're stuck in traffic, it's only the distance. We do. That's why I'm not opposed to electric. It's not going to be our summer road trip vehicle.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:43 PM) I almost don't want to tell you this, but GM is looking for a fully redone Volt in the 2015 model year at some point. It might well bring the price down substantially again as well as outperform this version by quite a bit. Right now the Volt is built on another car's platform, which means the battery weight is not well distributed, it's stuck in where space could be found. The next version is supposed to be a fully independent platform for the Volt designed around its specific needs. If your wife's commute is 20-25 a day, and you have another vehicle that you'd use for long distances, have you thought about a Nissan Leaf? It's a bit smaller but a really nice car, it's cheaper than the Volt, they're flying off shelves and many of the tax credits still work. Yeah I dunno if we can wait much longer. Our work schedules are starting to become more demanding which means our one car commuting is becoming more difficult to manage. I thought the Leaf would be too small and the lack of a gas engine back up kind of scares me.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) Keep this in mind too... we looked at the Volt, briefly, and rejected it because the rear seat room is severely lacking. You have a kid and might have another, right? We had one with another on the way when we last bought, and had to reject the Volt out of hand because it had even less "leg" room than the vehicle we were already in that was too small. It is probably a very good commuter car choice, and oddly, would probably work fine for kids old enough to be fully in forward-facing seats or just boosters (or no kid seats at all). But for smaller kids still in bulky buckets that protrude a lot or are backwards-facing, it just doesn't work. Yeah this will be the big limitation - size. We only have the one now, so it would have to fit him (13 months old) in the back. If not, there's no way.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:12 PM) My cousin designed the Volt, its a solid car but has had some battery issues in the first few models. Be aware of that. Hmm. I wonder if that's been fixed in the 2013's.

I'm still torn on what to get my wife. Government Motors just started a 5k off promotion on the Volt. Added with the Federal tax credit of $7,500 and the Illinois rebate for electric cars (10% of the base price of the car, so about $4k), I could basically get one for $24k. And the nice part is that my wife's commute (20-25 miles max) is less than the 38 mile range on the car. According to Chevy you can charge the thing for $1.60/day (assume that's a really low estimate and double it and that's still about a grand a year for "fuel"). Very, very tempting. Ford isn't offering any good finance deals on the ford fusion hybrid or the energi (the plug-in model) doesn't get any of the tax credits (as far as I can tell). Decisions, decisions.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 09:22 AM) To save people the trouble of having to read that article, let me quickly paraphrase it in one sentence. "My apology to the poor OSU players who just needed money, but screw Johnny Manziel, that rich, spoiled, arrogant piece of s***." Lol, yep.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) This is exactly why the rules are the way they are. If you allow players any kind of income like this, you are opening the door for unlimited money funneled from donors to players. The only change the NCAA can really consider making is a stipend that is fixed and given to every player in FBS. In fact, mandating a stipend for FBS players might cause a nice side benefit in preventing all these small-time FCS schools from moving up to FBS if they know it's going to cost them a lot more. A stipend wouldn't stop the top guys from trying to make more money in other ways. Hell, they already get a stipend right now - their free education, room and board, food, equipment, etc.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 01:14 PM) That's more than fair. We'll see what happens when Black visits in August/Sept. That'd be great if he could get him to commit during the visit and then call up Cliff and say "your turn."

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 01:09 PM) I think a lot of people were banking on UF to get a commit out of him during his visit but now that he left there without one they started getting a feeling that UI is the leader. Yeah it's a good sign. I just refuse to buy the hype of self-appointed internet experts who simply follow other self-appointed internet experts for their news.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 5, 2013 -> 05:34 AM) No. Lohan's nudes leaked online from her latest crap fest...I mean movie. Despite all the trauma she has put her body through, her boobs look really good. My eyes keep drifting up towards her face and then I get grossed out. She's still what, mid-20's? She looks like she's 50.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 09:24 AM) Ok, I think I know what Balta is getting at. For the most part it's difficult to get Republicans or right-leaning voters to notice institutionalized Wall Street corruption in any meaningful way, most of the time they defend it (perhaps without realizing that's what they're doing, resisting the call to add to or modernize existing regulations because they usually believe the regulations are a problem as an article of faith) or won't accept that the modern GOP since the 80s supports the environment that allows things to like this to happen full stop. But, they notice CORZINE because he was an elected Dem, so now some confirmation bias is in order. Corzine is a Dem, ergo, similar corruption is the fault of Dems, ergo, there is otherwise no problem and nothing needs to be done except get rid of Dems. Replace every Republican or conservative word in that post, change it to Democrat or liberal, and it's also 100% correct. You're a fool if you don't think Democrats/liberals in power are just as wrong on Wall Street regulations as Republicans. Both parties get their pockets lined by Wall Street. Neither party has any incentive to actually change how things are done.

2013 Video Game Thread
Finished Bioshock Infinite this weekend. I'd give it an 8 to 8.5 out of 10. On par with the prior games, but unfortunately it followed the same trajectory for me: awesome and immersive in the beginning, then tedious and somewhat confusing in the middle, followed by a kind of "meh/wtf/that's it?" ending. I'm sure it's partly my fault for not paying very close attention to some cut scenes, but I was lost at the ending and had to go read about it. Great read for anyone that finished the game and wondered about the ending. http://www.ign.com/wikis/bioshock-infinite..._An_Explanation

OJ Simpson
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) Question for Badger and whomever: Do you think OJ is rotting in a Vegas area jail cell because we (society, jurors out there, etc) know he committed murder and we're making him pay via his second crime? Seriously ... did he do something bad enough to get this long sentence? All he did was go in a hotel room with some other guys and threaten some guys who took his stuff. I believe there was a gun in the room, but if I'm not mistaken, not even that has been proven as fact. OJ didn't even hit any of the guys with his fists. I believe he went to the hotel room drunk after a wedding and was bossing people around, but nothing happened. I don't even think the incident was that long to where it terrified any of the victims. I'm sure there are zillions of weekend crimes in Vegas involving this type of bullying or whatever you want to call it. I was appalled by OJ's speech to the parole board. It was all about how great he has been in prison and it was patting himself on the back type s***. But is this a case of our country saying, "Ha Ha, OJ. You killed 2 people and we all know it and you are rotting because of that with this trumped-up case involving your memorabelia?" He did more than just enter a hotel room with a gun. There were kidnapping and conspiracy charges as well. That said, 33 years is ridiculous for a non-death crime.

Trayvon Martin
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) Okay I had to look this up because there has to be more to it, and there is. http://www.adelmanlawyers.com/law-articles...t-in-litigation http://phonl.com/fl_law/rules/frcp/frcp1442.htm Basically Zimmerman would have to make an offer to settle before the "loser pay" kicks in. (edit) And I had no clue about this so learn something new. Federal court has the same offer of judgment stuff. It's a way to "force" parties to settle by adding another layer of risk to losing.

Where would you live?
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 06:21 PM) I couldn't live in Hawaii. I enjoy road trips too much. Have you been to Hawaii? There are plenty of roads to travel. The outdoors activities are amazing. I get the island fever feeling. But 4 hours away and you're in California or the northwest. That's closer than Chicago is to that stuff. I've spent several weeks on Kaui, Maui and Oahu over the years, and it's such a laid back feeling. If you lived in Honolulu you're just living in a big city with great weather, but if you're out in the "country" it's incredibly relaxing.
