MASTERS
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 02:34 PM) There are so many people who get upset at this statement, but I think Tiger is done winning majors. He might have one last swan song a la Jack in 1986, but that's about it. I say that partly due to the off the course stuff, but more due to all of his injuries catching up with him. And partly due to the 8-12 guys under the age of 25 that are tearing up the tour. Was watching the tournament in Vancouver 2 weeks back and guys were hitting NINE irons 240+ yards. Tiger can't compete with that anymore. That was his bread and butter.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 07:42 PM) Aren't there 2 distinct statements here, buying into a index fund doesn't have to equal an all-equities position does it? I was looking at the Vanguard 500 which is like 99% equities. I assumed all the index funds were like that.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 04:06 PM) Anyone have some cheaper stocks (less than $20 per share) they have ideas about? Im thinking over the next week or so their may be some value in buying. I'm in the same boat. For the real investors in here, assume the markets continue to drop and hit like 10k or under. Smart to buy into an index fund? Or is the all-equity position not a good one?

London Riots
QUOTE (Soxy @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 05:25 PM) The Daily Fail? Ugh. Sorry, I just refuse to get my news from a paper with a topless chick on page 3. It's like treating the NY Post as reputable (which is actually an insult to the Post). Anyway, the mainstream (i.e. credible) papers have been spouting a very similar line. I also don't think that the situation is terribly similar to ours. This has been going on a lot longer. They've had much higher unemployment than we have for a really long time. The only surprising thing to me is that this took this long; I honestly started expecting this when France was having all those troubles (last year?). (Okay, and I'm surprised that this is being confined to England. I would have thought Glasgow would be up in smoke by now too.) Well yeah, but it's an editorial piece, not a report. I think the guy makes a lot of good points, especially regarding a generation of youths that have grown up without role models, without aspirations, without concern for the future. That's what i'm referring to when I say we're in the same boat. I don't think our position is as bad....yet.

London Riots
Surprised there hasn't been a thread about this since the UK is in the same boat as we are (less the rioting). Thought this would be a good article to start some discussion: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-...sed-youths.html I have a feeling liberals will hate it and conservatives will applaud it.

Mysterious company dissolves after giving $1 million to pro-Romne
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 12:25 PM) Here's where we're running into differences. McCain's switchovers were lightswitches. In 2000 he was a "Maverick", voted against the tax cuts, etc., that persona seemed to give him the best shot to compete for the presidency. Then by 2004, he needed to play to the base that didn't trust him, so he lightswitched the other way and on everything except notably torture, he was as far right as you could get. He's pretty much stayed that way...on then off. Romney says we need to take care of carbon pollution and then 2 weeks later says carbon isn't a pollutant. McCain's changeover was complete and total. Romney's happens every time he gets called on something. Which is a bigger changeup? This exact same scenario happened with Obama. On and off. Not ok with a debt limit increase, now all for it. Not ok with continuing Gitmo. Still in operation. Not ok with keeping troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Still there for the forseeable future. Not ok with unilateral military action. Oops, we have Libya. They're politicians. They're all a bunch of lying sacks of s***. To argue one is better than another or different than another is a fools errand.

TV shows that died a premature death
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 07:54 AM) The Event Flash Forward Survivorman V Outsourced The Tudors Vanished The Tudors? They had 5 seasons. What more was there to tell? I'd go with Rubicon, which was just starting to get really good.

2011 Films Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) Skip The Patriot. Bore-fest! You must hate America. Checked out Source Code on Sunday. Another meh movie. Decent idea that took a dive off the cliff about half way through. Gyllenhall is becoming quite the actor, i'll grant him that. But the story was weak (the "bad" scientist was incredibly awful with whatever accent he was using) and really the whole "science" behind it didn't really fit together at all. The obvious problem being that if you're relying on the last 8 seconds of a persons memory, how are you able to see/experience things that the source did not? Probably a dumb quibble considering the whole thing is unbelievable to begin with, but still.

One I don't remember doing...
Gotta be Lost. No other show has made me anxious for a wednesday or thursday to roll around so I could watch the next episode. No other show made be perform random internet searches and read various internet blogs for potential clues as to what the hell was going on and how it all fit together. The Season 3 finale, "Through the Looking Glass," is probably the best episode of TV ever made.

Hyperpartisanship is threatening to destroy our country
QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 08:49 AM) No. I believe the military's mission is essential. I believed that long before I became a part of it. National defense is a vital part of defending our way of life. Wealth redistribution is not and never will be. And even if I was just a dude who wanted to protect his paycheck, which I'm not, how would that be any different from a welfare maggot voting Democrat solely to keep his money supply going? Well, the difference would be that I'm actually contributing to society, of course. I'm cheering for good business. Again, employers should do what is allowed within the law to maximize profits. I hope tax breaks are implemented in order to encourage employers to keep jobs here. That's proactive and acceptable. But I will not see a big government nanny state step in and tell employers what they have to do. Big government is a far greater evil than job outsourcing and private citizens' greed. I'm as conservative as the next guy about most issues, but this whole "businesses have free reign in the name of the market" viewpoint is completely narrow-minded. I have absolutely no problem telling US companies that if they take jobs overseas they lose any and all domestic tax incentives. It's absolutely insane that companies are shifting jobs overseas or laying off workers while the CEO and other high level executives walk away with millions per year in salaries.

Osama Bin Laden Dead
QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) I know Afghanistan isn't Arabic. But it's Islamic. And these people aren't committing terrorism because they're "occupied". Bin Laden's stated goal was the establishment of a worldwide Islamic caliphate. That's why Israel must fall, that's why Sharia zones are being implemented in the UK, and so on and so forth. And that's why the attempts at appeasement are so funny. The left thinks that by kissing up to Islam, they'll be spared. As the pro-Palestine Italian journo learned in Gaza recently when he literally lost his head, it doesn't matter. Infidels must die. I will absolutely look upon Muslim "Americans" with suspicion. And they should expect that. After all, Islamic terror has been the West's enemy since we brought communism to its knees. This sort of thinking just brings us down to their assbackwards way of looking at the world. We're better than that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 03:00 PM) So it's ok to add inflammatory statements to your posts that you can't back up just to inflame people. All Republicans are in favor of brutally murdering poor black babies and using their blood to leaven bread. WHO TOLD YOU?!

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 11:16 AM) Obama actually laid out general policy guidelines in the summer of 2009 for HCR, and it notably did not include single-payer. He could have promoted that idea then. Why not? Because he knew it had no chance of passing? Why waste the political capital by pissing off moderate dems?

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 10:58 AM) What do you thinks easier "we want to cut gov't and taxes" or "we want to completely undercut an industry with tens of thousands of american jobs and profits with a incredibly powerful lobbying industry and replace it with a government run insurance program"? That's why the republicans are better at pulling the populace to their right. The "pro-tax" lobbies aren't very strong, they dont' really exist. I'm not saying obama has been perfect, I'm saying this narrative that all he needed to do was negotiate harder is ignorant of the structural issues that have arisen with a rigidly aligned republican party. Rather than blaming the actors we need to start blaming the institutions and start looking for changes, and in the meanwhile putting pressure on the actors with proven-effective means of pulling them left. You guys can do your "I'm going to let a republican get into office and then complain about their outRAGEOUS policies", and i'll try to work within the means of the system to put a more fluid system in place while fighting for progress anywhere I can find it and working hard not to let it go. For the same reason, Democrats often have the "better" side of the argument regarding social services, because the fall back is always "so you'd rather have starving kids and old people dying in the streets!?" No one wants or agrees with that, but that's what the argument becomes, just like any pro-tax argument becomes "government's taking all you own!"

2011 TV Thread
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 08:01 AM) The show never disappoints. I love how Skylar has not only accepted Walt's lifestyle but has dove right in. Jesse's spiraling out of control pretty quick. I guess when you kill a guy then watch another guy get his throat cut right in front of you, you might have a tendency to lose your s***. Definitely a darker season so far. Skylar's character is by far the worst. She's the Kate from Lost. Zero redeeming qualities. My wife and I were basically screaming at the TV last night as she started to give Walt s*** for the black eye and for not returning her phone calls. Like, f*** you, you ran out on him. I dunno why Walt is even dealing with her. I guess he has to in order to keep his cover.
