    Fringe

I thought it was good enough to bring me back for more episodes, but I had a few issues with some of the logistics of the show. Obviously it's all about sci-fi, but I still found some parts very difficult to believe. Like his lab would still be up after 17 years, like he'd be able to instantly use all the new technology, like an agent like her (a liason no less) would actually remove him from the mental institution (or the fact that he could just be released like that so long as he had a guardian), or put herself through that...procedure. But ya know, Lost has me believing in smoke monsters and an island that can disappear so...what are you gonna do. I'll definitely be watching next week.
  2. QUOTE (JuiceCruz16 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) I honestly do not see how anybody does not get clearence from the ncaa to be eligible. Word from Memphis is that Angel Garcia is not only on campus but coach Cal has said that he has been cleared to participate this upcoming season. I'm glad to hear this and will be rooting for him, but just WOW on how he made the cut. MOst of the time it's ACT scores and credits from high school classes. I never understood the ACT score thing. I think you have to get like an 18 and you get 3 chances.
  3. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 10:10 AM) 6 oxen 25 sets of clothes 500 bullets 1000 pounds of food 2 wagon wheel 1 wagon axel 1 wagon tongue I'd recommend 2 wagon tongues - those things always break.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 11:47 PM) To paraphrase what Howard Fineman just said on MSNBC: In his "listening post", he has talked to a lot of republican / McCain people. The McCain campaign soiled themselves tonight. They did NOT see some of what Obama said coming. They were caught flat footed. They are planning a soft, low key, "boring" by comparison convention. That isnt good for them. How could they NOT see what was coming? I call BS on this. Sorry, these guys aren't stupid, nor are the people running these campaigns. I guarantee you they have 10 speeches written just in case Obama says something out of the blue. But really, what did he say that came from left field? To me 90% of it was predictable "Repubs hate people and want you to be poor and sick, Dems love people and will give you money and healthcare." The ONLY thing that was suprising to me was how much Obama went after McCain and some of his specific goals he'd like to achieve (like the 10 year pledge). And how on earth could they see this as being a soft, low key convention? It was history in the making. It was a black man accepting his parties nomination in front of 80,000 people, with lines to get in stretching all of downtown, on the 40th anniversary of the "i have a dream" speech. Oh, and that guy was on MSNBC so... consider the source.
  5. My take of the speech as a Republican who's been pissed and annoyed at his party the last 4 years and open to voting for either candidate: 1st 20 min - political BS fluff 2nd 20 min - finally some good substance about what he would do last 10 min - more political BS fluff Favorite line: "change doesn't come from Washington, change comes to Washington." That really hit me as something i'm interested in voting for. Biggest grip: (paraphrasing) "Government needs to give children the opportunity to get an education instead of telling them to do it on their own." Wasn't that the first 20 minutes of his speech? Him telling America how with some love and support from his family he was able to come from low income Kansas to the Democratic nominee for President? Just seems weird to tell a great success story and then say the same system is broken and the government needs to do more. Missing issue: global warming/the environment (he mentioned climate change in passing once, that's it) I'm still solidly on the fence and it likely won't be until the debates when I'll make up my mind. Too much posturing and political fluff for me to really be all about that speech, though I was very happy that he listed off some of his priorities and what he would like to do.
  6. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 08:47 PM) For those who are interested: Live streaming video via the DNC Convention Website. By the way, I only caught the last 2 minutes, but Ted Kennedy is the man who gets away with murder. fixed that for ya
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) Only new show that has some what caught my eye is called Fringe (at least i think thats what its called.) Me too. Any show with Daniels from The Wire is ok with me. Not too much else i'm interested in. Thankfully Madmen is back. That's gotten me through the last few weeks.
  8. I agree with the above but would add that I would prefer someone who has an expertise in an area that I'm not as good in. If i'm good with foreign relations and military policy, but not so good with the economy, I'd want someone who is good with the economy.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 06:44 AM) Hizballah is a really different animal than al-Qaida, just FWIW. yeah they have more money
  10. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) Rio won't get it because outside of a tiny part of downtown, the place is a complete s***hole. That was the same argument against Beijing being a host city though. Granted, I dunno that Brazil has an extra 40 billion to "build" a modern metropolis, but still. I gotta think that Chicago is the front runner. It'll be 20 years from the last US olympics, the US probably generates the majority of Olympic revenue - that's gotta be a huge boost. Plus I think it's a city that has nearly everything that is required. It'd be more of a fix-er-upper instead of a complete build. With only 7 years to do everything (they decide in late 09 right?), could Rio get it all finished in time? At the same time though, I could see the excitement of having the first olympics in south america being a huge plus. Assuming Chicago wins, I'd love to have the Olympics here. I think it'd boost this already historic city to another level. It deserves the opportunity to showcase what it has to offer. And as others have said, it'd be real nice to be able to upgrade and revitalize some much needed areas of the city.
  11. I'll second Manny's Deli. I'm a fan of Heaven on Seven too. Delicious gumbo and jambalaya.
  12. oh sweet, so I'm one of the lucky ones that has their Madden game freeze on them. For some reason it won't load any of my franchise files. Super.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) To solve your Hester issues, the AI kicks it away from him a lot, but if you substitute before hte kickoff and switch hester to the other side, it tends to work. Although, returning a kick rather far isn't that easy. The game is awesome though, after struggling to run the first three games, Forte busted out for 131 and 2 td's for me. But no one really cares about that. Oh, and I refuse to use the rewind feature, I have mine set to 0. Fluke plays happen in real life, and I think it takes away from the realism to be able to rewind something that happened. I do have a question though, has anyone figured out how to challenge a play? Yeah but Harrison wouldn't get through 5 guys and then break it for 90 yards. But anyways, I've already done a couple of challenges. After the highlight replays of the play you want to challenge hit start and it should be an option on the list. In previous games it was under "gameplay strategy" but not this year. Sometimes you have to wait until the play calling screen comes up before the option becomes available.
  14. Picked up Madden last night for the first since the 05 version. I'm pretty impressed thus far. Graphics are good (though still not great - what's with the player models when they run? It doesn't look realistic at all), gameplay is much improved, and overall I think I'm happy. I also really like the rewind feature. In previous years I'd get burned on a terrible, unrealistic play (like last night - Manning to Harrison on a slant at their 10 yard line, breaking through 4-5 tacklers, including Urlacher and Briggs, for a 80 something yard TD). But now when that happens I can rewind it and continue on. My biggest complaint is that for some reason during kickoffs you never get the chance to switch players. It's pretty much up to the computer if I get to use Hester or not - seems that I should be able to have the option to have him run over and catch it, but because of the camera angle I don't have the option and/or time to do it. I didn't mess with the options too much, hopefully there's a camera angle fix for that. I also don't understand how the Bears are an overall 85, but... What's everyone elses Madden IQ? I scored a mediocre 560 something. I can't pass for crap and I can't stop anyone who is running. But my run attack is Madden level and my pass defense is nearly Madden level.
  15. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 10:04 AM) President= $10,000,000/yr Senator= $5,000,000/yr House Rep= $2,500,000/yr Govenor= $5,000,000/yr State Lawmaker (House or Senate)= $1,000,000 You guys are crazy. For one, money should NEVER be a consideration in why someone wants to run for office. Most of these guys are rich already, the money is a secondary concern. It should be all about working for the public. More importantly, why on earth should we reward morons for moronic work? As far as I'm concerned Blago should get approximately $20 per year, $15 of which should go to his hair stylist. Where is this money going to come from? When a moron drives the states budget into the ground (all while continually SPENDING MORE F'N MONEY) the LAST thing that needs to happen is a pay raise. And I understand that we're talking abotu pennies here (in the grand scheme of things) but still. It's the principle of the thing.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) I have an idea here. I suggest a law that gives lawmakers an automatic pay raise that exactly matches the increase in pay, on average, for the average middle income Illinoisan. In other words, if the average annual wage increase in Illinois is 1%, then lawmakers get 1%. Not that complicated, doesn't have to be revisited, and puts them on par with their constituents. That makes TOO much sense. No way it'll happen.
  17. Just got this email and figured I'd add it here as I know some of you would probably be interested in signing: Sorry to bother! but I don't know how much you've been following the mess in Springfield for the last few years but this is getting really ridiculous. If the Illinois Senate does not vote this week to reject the 12% political pay raises for the Governor, lawmakers, judges and other public officials, the unfair and undeserved salary hikes will take effect automatically. The members of the Illinois House have already voted overwhelmingly to reject the undeserved political pay raises, but they will still automatically kick in if the Illinois Senate does not do the same this week, which you can bet they will abstain from voting on unless they get enough grief. It took me some time to find the link to sign Lt. Gov. Quinn's petition to have the Senate vote to reject the pay raise but here it is, if you're interested in weighin in: www.nopayraise.org ***Just to put this in perspective, our esteemed govenor will get more than $192,000 by July 2009, up from about $171,000.
  18. I've got a 60gb, had it since a few months after launch. It's worked perfectly until just a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded the NCAA 09 demo and noticed that every once and a while a player would get a huge spike or line coming out of its back. I ignored it, thinking that it was just something with the demo. I popped in NCAA 08 a couple days later and had the same problem. Then I downloaded the Madden demo and yip, same problem. These are the only games that have any sort of problem. Other more demanding games, like MGS4, Assassins Creed, Uncharted, etc all run without issue. So I'm not really sure what the problem is. The unit is clean and runs in an open space, so I doubt it's overheating (I've also tried playing the game after the ps3 has been off for hours). So who knows. It sucks though, I was looking forward to Madden this year.
  19. What could they possible say that would be of interest? "Play up Obama's lack of experience," "don't mention race," "try to keep Bill under control?"
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) I see what you are saying. I do think that candidates for high office have a very difficult road to travel, and certainly there is no good answer on how they choose to use or expose their family. It would seem that there is no truly good option there. This is why I don't tend to concern myself much with those decisions. But I disagree that its not our business. For me, I expect elected officials to be trustworthy. I expect them to be of high moral character. That's not to say I think they are, in fact, often they are not. But I refuse to lower my expectations in this area. Not that I necessarily want an angel - a few smaller skeletons in the closet, from their past, are not the end of the world. But to cheat on your spouse, who has cancer, while espousing the things that Edwards was espousing, is dispicable to me. It shows poor judgement and weak moral character. Therefore, I do in fact judge him on this, and I don't feel bad doing it. Now, if John and Elizabeth have come to terms with this and moved on, that is 100% their business. I would not seek to dictate their marriage. I simply seek to dictate who gets into office, and I will continue to want that bar set high. Totally agree. Also, I highly doubt this affair was a one and done. If it happened in 2006 why does the Enquirer have pictures of Edwards sneeking around with her just a couple of weeks ago? Which also begs the question, if it was just an affair and the kid wasn't his, why is he still around her? Hmm, more lies. Suprise!
  21. I think he should be seriously considered for next years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HckVafsbSHY...feature=related
  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 12:59 PM) Actually, check point 6 in the Affidavit, and its exactly what I was referring to. He made a threatening comment towards Obama, directly to a USSS agent (which has to be on the top 10 list of stupid things one can do to get themselves arrested). The in point 12, you have a witness statement about Giesel making a specific and life-threatening comment towards Obama. This versus the only Bush mention is in point 13, is not a direct quote, and was not said directly to a federal agent. Plus the President reference is not clearly attached to Bush there (which is just poor writing by the agent who filed the report). This is all why point 17 suggests prosecution of the threat against Obama - its a much stronger case. The Bush comment was just "hate", and then a general comment about killing a President. By the way, something else worth pointing out that few people know... The USSS has special legal privileges for search, seizure and detention that no other agency of government at any level has. If it pertains to a case of a threat against the executive, they can do all those things without a warrant or permission. They do not require a warrant, or felony-in-commission, or wingspan, or any of the other various warrant exceptions. They can, if they elect to, just do it. I don't want to take this guys side - so lets get that out there first - but to your points: I don't see how Paragraph 6 is a direct threat. He denied making the threats, then said (probably in a joking manner, which as you say is the dumbest thing you can do, but still), that if he wanted to kill him he'd use a sniper rifle....that's a stretch to mean "i want to go kill obama." I've heard comedians saythings 20 times worse towards Bush and you don't see the USSS rush in and arrest them (and remember they questioned him and then searched his car/room on the basis of those comments, nothing else). Moreover I like the fact that Paragraph 17 claims he was threatening to kidnap, even though he never said that (if he did, i must have glanced over that, but I didn't find it anywhere in that affidavit). I guess I just feel this is totally weak. It's linking together some racist guys comments and his weapons and assuming he's going to do something about it. Again, i'm not saying he shouldn't have been questioned or that he shouldn't have been followed/watched, but i think detaining him is an entirely different thing.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 12:06 PM) Which is why I think we are missing some key parts of the story here. The Secret Service did the investigating, not the MSM, and I don't think the USSS has any great preference for Obama over Bush. Possibly even the opposite. So if this guy is being charged over the Obama comment and not the Bush one, I can almost guarantee you that there are important differences in what was said about each one by the suspect. Actually, not really. Here's a copy of the affidavit: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years...7081obama1.html Basically there's not much more than what was in the news article (in terms of threats) and you learn some other things that were not in the article: that some of the weapons and ammunition that were found in the car were in a safe and that all of the weapons were legally in his possession and legal to own (including the armor piercing rounds). So, basically this is an incredibly scary situation, IMO. Not that he shouldn't have been questioned, or watched closely, but the fact that they deem a couple of cracks to classmates and some legally owned weapons probably cause to charge and detain him... I thought the Alien and Sedition Acts went away a long time ago...
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) I watched this story on CNN yesterday and was totally shocked by it. The part that amazed me was that he also threatened to kill someone else important... Who was it? Oh yeah, the guy who is actually the President of the United States... It was a complete afterthought in the story. I love the fact that he made essentially the same "threatening" comments to both Bush and Obama, and they only charged him with threatnening the candidate. Also, the fact that they used his "weapons" as proof of his intent, notwithstanding the fact that he owned them and was in a bailbondsman class when the comments were made. If I were this kid, I'd hire myself a real good lawyer and sue the pants off the government.
