  1. pssh, you guys are so late to the game. Illinois basketball started on Sunday
  2. Put me in the camp that thought Illinois would go 8-4 or 9-3. This loss was bad because if you know anything about both teams you know that Illinois was just sorta pissing around with Minny. Why Locksley called so many stupid plays is beyond me. Why not run the shotgun option when you're on the one? It's unstoppable. Instead you try a qb sneak and a pa rollout? Stupid. And Minny is better, no doubt, but they scored 14 pts off two fumbles inside Illinois' 10 yard line. I think Illinois is a good team, and if they win out from here, they should still be able to go to a good bowl. Though not a new years day bowl, which was what I was hoping for.
  3. I still think the pilot was the best episode ("The Gang Gets Racist"). I just started watching it this season and the first few were so good that I had to rent the others. A great show that I didn't think I'd like at all. People told me DeVito made the show, but he's actually me least favorite character. I think Charlie and Mac are the best, but the interactions between all of them are what sets this show apart.
  4. Did anyone catch the 30 minute weekend update SNL last night? If this is any indication of what SNL still is, I'll be running away from my television on saturday nights. It was absolutely terrible. They opened up with a 12 minute bit about the 2nd debate. I didn't crack a smile the entire time. It was completely unfunny and whats worse is that it kept going and going and going. Then the snarky weekend update with pohler and that other guy started. I think out of the 15-20 stories they covered, I laughed once. The black economy guy (that actor has never been funny the entire time he's been on that - keenan? wayne? something like that) and the Hall and Oates bits were equally bad. I dunno, maybe I'm getting old. I just don't find anything they do as even remotely funny.
  5. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 05:47 PM) There's something about if at any point you unplugged your HDMI while the console is on it screws up the picture permanently no matter the output source. Kind of sucks and they should put a much bigger warning about it then they do. I had the same problem with random lines appearing at seemingly random times. I used HDMI, so I think that's what I did, though I'm not really sure. I turned my PS3 in for free and got a perfect refurb. But was it for all games at all times? I can run some games, like Uncharted, without any graphical issues, but madden and NCAA always have it (though it's not the same spot on the screens cuz it follows certain players. I did a little research and I think it's called artifacting - basically the gpu and/or graphics card are not working properly. So I called Sony yesterday and they basically said I could get it fixed for $150 bucks, plus additional fees if necessary, plus the cost to ship a refurbed system to me. I have the original launch 60gb, so she wasn't able to tell me if i'd get it back or not (i.e. they just throw in the broken piece and send me back mine). Since they don't have 60gb's anymore, I'll probably get the 80gb without the ps/ps1 compatabiltiy, which i guess isn't a huge issue since i have yet to play one and i still have both of those systems. Still though, I complained about the price of fixing it and basically told the customer service rep that it's ridiculous to expect me to spend 150 bucks when i spent 600 at launch, only to have the price of the machine drop 200 within a couple of months. I said you've made your money off me already, might as well make me happy. I also reminded her of the fact that it's going to be a material defect of the machine and that I could easily stop being a long-time Sony customer and buy a brand new 360 for the same price. None of this meant anything to her, she put me on hold to get a supervisor and then my phone dropped its signal. So who knows if they'll try and work for me.
  6. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) Do you/have you used HDMI? Yeah that's what I use. Surely that's not the problem though. It's not like one line in the middle of the screen, it follows the players. Imagine a 10 foot line extended off the back of a players foot. Whenever the player runs the line follows up and down.
  7. I'm a happy ps3 customer, although I'm going to have to send my PS3 in here shortly because the graphics on some of the games are messed up (spikes and lines coming out of players in Madden and NCAA football). Otherwise though I'm very, very happy with it. I'll add too that I don't think the consoles will ever take over for PC's. PC's will always be a few steps ahead simply because you can buy a computer that'll last your 4-5 years but you can upgrade the memory and graphics cards to stay up to date. Moreover, I think there's still a majority of gamers that like the mouse and keyboard controls over a controller (including me). Call of Duty 4 is so much better on PC than either console simply because of the precision of the controls. I couldn't imagine playing a game like WoW on a console either (although I am looking forward to what Agent can bring to the table).
  8. Obama not liberal enough? That's new! I'm upset because McCain is damn near my perfect candidate but he's too old and 8 years too late (and he picked a terrible VP candidate). He's socially liberal but also a strong Reaganite economically. I really don't think we'll find a Republican like him for a while - my party is stuck in the Bush mold for some reason. He's also willing to talk about the environment instead of pretending it doesn't exist. But I have two issues with him: his energy policy (i'm 100% behind the nuclear push, 100% against more drilling) and his new mortgage bailout. I'm tired of the bailouts. No one is learning a lesson here other than Joe Six Pack's 401(k). We should go after all the money grubbin greedy bankers/investors who started this mess, fine the piss out of them, then use that money to ASSIST people in bad mortgages. I am NOT in favor of another handout to wipe the slate clean.
  9. I thought this was aight. The recent Palin stuff has been good. But these few clips don't save a show that's been terrible for a decade. And by terrible, I mean completely unwatchable. I remember catching it a few times and just staring at the tv with my mouth open asking, "Why? How? Really? This is what they come up with?"
  10. honestly i thought both failed. What a terrible, terrible waste of 1.5 hours. Anyone who has heard the names "Obama" and "McCain" knew everything they were going to say tonight. Not a single new piece of information was discussed, except McCain's mortgage bailout, but even that got about 30 seconds in 1.5 hours. Instead both candidates attacked each other a little about not-so-important things, totally failed to fully explain their true positions, and then defended their points by simply attacking the other person again. I'm more pissed at Tom Brokaw. What piss poor questions to ask. 1) they were the same questions as the 1st debate, by and large. It's fine to ask a "what do you think of the bailout and how it will work," but we got the same questions about the economy, healthcare, russia, iran, etc. Boring. 2) Why can't we get some actual character questions? Who are your role models? Why would you be a good manager? How does faith play a role in your life, if at all? What effects your decision making? Or what about other issues? Immigration anyone? And I was angry at the fact that both guys said that every issue that was discussed was the most pressing of our time, or the most difficult task of our generation. Sorry, no. Stop making it seem like the world is going to end if you don't get elected.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) You know frankly, I'm getting really sick of the villification of the liberals on this board as a defense mechanism for some of the conservatives here. While kap has been great and ss2k5 has been awesome especially with his insight on financial issues, I'm getting sick and tired of *some* posters instead of debating a point, just calling the other posters Obama flaks and that's the new argument. Conservative posters here have strong opinions too, yet I don't see liberal posters ever hiding behind "oh you're just a republican sheep this is ridiculous your points are invalid because you're blind" type posts EVER. So why not just stick to the discussions at hand, as a whole, considering this is a baseball message board discussing politics, this stays pretty high minded and cordial. So how about just discussing the players in the race and not attacking the posters? Fair enough, but I'm not going to let someone say things that are ridiculous and not attack them on it.
  12. QUOTE (Soxy @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 10:43 AM) That's bulls*** too, and I think you know that. Look at the polls of the board 19-10 Obama, 26-8 Biden.
  13. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 10:43 AM) Obama won because he looked calm and unflappable on stage. McCain on the other hand had problems making eye contact and came off as condescending. He held his own on international policy questions, at time providing a better argument than McCain. This was McCain's field of expertise. Palin won given the expectations set by the McCain camp, and not making any really stupid mistakes. But Biden also did well, and also won. If there is a situation where you can have two winners in a debate, you had it here. I think Palin took the first half of the debate fairly convincingly, but Biden scored on international issues (which was expected) and felt really really sincere when he talked about his family (which was not.) People seem to connect more with the Obama/Biden ticket this year. This doesn't take anything away from McCain/Palin. The truth is, that this year just isn't their time. Unfortunately for McCain, his time was 2000. I disagree, as I feel McCain come off as someone with a lot of experience and Obama came off as someone who has talked a lot about the issues but hasn't really done anything with them (not going to Iraq or meeting with military leaders was a pretty big point to me). On top of that, international issues accounted for probably 25% of that debate, so I feel it's a little unfair to say that it was McCain's debate with his field of expertise. Moroever, I again ask why is it that Palin lost when it was clear that Biden was going to blow her away but didnt? I still don't think she'd make a good Prez, let alone a good VP, but she exceeded expectations in that debate. If we're going to give Obama props for making good arguments and at least being equal to McCain, why not say the same for Palin? And I agree that 2000 was McCain's year and that Obama connects a lot more with people. But I'd prefer someone who is going to solve the countries problems, not someone I feel a connection with. I feel a connection with Jessica Alba. That doesn't mean I want her investing 2-300 billion dollars (dollars which we don't have) in a national healthcare system run by the government.
  14. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) I'll post this again incase you missed it. If the election were held today: That's today. What'll happen next week? Or the week after? Am I overlooking the graph that goes up and down for both candidates over time?
  15. ok fair enough. I'll change it to "liberals on this board."
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/20..._obama-225.html http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/ma...bama_vs_mccain/ http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/ http://pollster.com/ Don't forget that McCain has pulled out of Michigan. Lol, I love how you post stats that show for the last 3 months Obama's lead in overall polls has stayed consistent (anywhere from 4-7%) and the electoral map has stayed roughly the same (except for the bump for mccain after the RNC). I see nothing in those first to links that show Obama "seperating" from McCain. Again, I'm not saying Obama won't win, or that he won't win easily. I just feel it's a little premature to concede the election in the first week of October. Look at recent history in elections - polls and surveys aren't exactly accurate come election day.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 10:31 AM) For basically the same exact reason the "conservative world" can't be consistent. Ah the completely overbroad comeback. At least I was limiting it to this specific issue. I'm just saying that liberals somehow think the two are consistent: 1) Obama won the first debate because he put together two complete sentences regarding international policy. 2) Palin lost big time even though she was supposed to come out drooling and wetting herself for 1.5 hours but didn't.
  18. Yeah yeah, Gore was going to kill Bush, so was Kerry, McCain had no chance to be the Repub candidate, and Hillary was supposed to be the Dem candidate. GMAFB. I'm not saying Obama won't win, but this nonsense about it being over on 10/3 is ridiculous.
  19. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) After watching the debate last week and the debate last night, I am confident now, more than ever, that Barack Obama is the next president of the united states. He torched McCain last week, and while Palin "held her own", she did nothing to reverse McCain's downward spiral. She may have stabilized it, but in no way turned it around. He didn't torch McCain, take off your homer glasses. If Obama won last week merely by "showing up," then Palin won this round because she didn't sound like a complete moron, which was expected of her. Why is it that the liberal world can't be consistent? Also, people keep saying Obama is going to destroy McCain, which he may well do. But the fact is Obama has had nothing but momentum in this election and yet he can't seperate. He had the world-wide tour with every media "journalist" on their knees with him, yet he couldn't pull away. He had the historical made-for-tv-moment in Denver at the convention, but couldn't pull away. And now supposedly he "torched" McCain in the first debate, yet he still can't pull away. Face the facts people - this is going to be a close race decided by a couple of states (again). Also, as a mild McCain supporter, no doubt I have my issues with Palin getting the Presidency. But to me I'll gamble that McCain can survive at least one term and that he'd be infinitely better than Obama. I'll worry about a possible Palin presidency in the next election.
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 28, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) well if you are sick of it, it's the GOPs fault. One of their initial attacks about Obama was that he was an elitist. It was a stupid line of action considering McCain is absurdly rich. Obama did not make all his money until his books the last decade. He was a professor and state senator. That's not $$$$$ He was/is a lawyer and his wife was/is a lawyer. Their first jobs were at Sidley Austin, one of the top firms in the country. So, at a young age, they were making bank - well over 100k a year each. Money has never been a problem in the Obama household. It's just as absurd for him to talk about the poor as if he's experienced it as it is for McCain to do the same.
  21. I'm only 26, but I thought I was old at 23-24. I remember going back to homecoming at my alma mater and thinking the freshman/sophmore girls (hell, even some of the upper classmen) looked like they were 12.
  22. QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 11:49 PM) Pryor is the second best player on that team? Really? I think once he has to pass against decent teams, his numbers will be pedestrian. I'm not saying he can't be great, but he isn't yet. If he's the 2nd best player that team has, then that's why Ohio State isn't that good this year. Also, for the USC/Kansas basketball comparison...USC has been a top 5 postseason team almost every year lately and they are either in the title game or winning their New Year's bowl game. Kansas has a national title and a runner-up finish in recent years, but they haven't been anywhere near as consistent as USC football. They're top 5 postseason because they play in one of the worst major conferences and are essentially assured a BCS title bid every year (which is a home game no less).
  23. Great article on the ridiculousness of the hype surrounding USC. I ask again, when does Carroll get questioned for losing so many bad games with all that talent? http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Article.php?Page=2433 I equate USC to Kansas in basketball - tons of talent year after year, tons of historically good but not great teams, and lots and lots of hype because of the fan base.
  24. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 10:22 AM) I probably only want GoldenEye and that WCW/NWO Revenge game at this stage. All in all, I'm looking to spend just over $400 for the Wii, Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy, a few N64 games and some extra controllers / nunchuks (via E-Bay). Pretty good overall package I think. Keep in mind that a lot of the games that you would want aren't on VC (Virtual Console - where you buy it online). i don't believe Goldeneye is - most third party games aren't because the third party wants a large share of the profits.
