  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 08:23 PM) If that's the case, then logically it follows that every year or two, you ought to spend your first round pick on a QB and try to land in the top 10, because that would therefore be the only realistic way of getting a super bowl championship. Why? You can groom a franchise QB more easily than drafting one and getting lucky. There are probably more franchise qb's that are later round picks than 1st round picks. The problem is teams like the Bears think that guys that suck (or are mediocre at best) for multiple seasons will somehow turn it around. Or, more accurately, they believe that putting a mediocre QB on the field with an expected good running game and defense is a recipe for success. I think history shows that your odds of success are pretty low using that formula (like 2 super bowl appearances in four decades). Who on the roster are they grooming for the future? They have no plan. For the 5th year in a row now we're hoping some mediocre QB can manage a game and allow the defense to win it for us. It's pathetic.
  2. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) I think you are wrong in some areas of the story with hostetler and simms, but I don't think you need a spectacular quarterback to build a franchise around, just a decent and consistent one. I think mediocre can be described about grossman and orton, although orton looks like he could get better. Given the winning super bowl QB list, I absolutely disagree.
  3. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 08:15 PM) Freaking awesome win. That is really all that needs to be said. I think the best thing about it is that with so many young players they still made a lot of mistakes coming down the stretch, yet they still pulled it off. Lots of coaching material in those last 5 minutes. A HUGE f'n game though. And whoever said the second half was full of poor offensive execution, I totally disagree. These are two of the top defenses in the country. I thought both teams executed well given the defenses they were against.
  4. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 08:01 PM) This could be the game to kick start Legion's season. Regardless of the outcome, he has been huge tonight, played solid D and his confidence seems to be rising. agreed. he's got a sweet stroke.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 07:56 PM) Deleted it, as I've realized it's just not worth arguing with Illinois fans about refs. I'm not saying that Illinois is getting screwed (except for the last one.... who calls that with one second left, in any game?). I'm just saying Purdue fans can't b**** about the refs in this game considering the free throw situation.
  6. I also love the new moving screens they are allowing in this game.
  7. what a suprise. the home big ten team gets foul called with 1 second left.
  8. regardless of how this plays out, i'll say two things: 1) Illinois is going to be good this year, and a player in the big ten race. 2) (I never thought I'd say this) Chester Frazier is the only guy I trust with the ball.
  9. So who actually thinks the state dems will step up and refuse this selection? I don't.
  10. I got this for xmas and I gotta say, Bale's Batman is so unnervingly annoying it was really difficult not to burst out laughing. I said it before when it was out in theaters, but that deep voice he tries to pull off is just so distracting. Anytime he says more than 5 words it sounds like he's running out of breath. It was the one terrible part about this otherwise fantastic movie.
  11. I forgot about Uncharted 2. The first one was one of my favorite games of the past couple of years. The Agency i'm still kinda meh on. Good idea, but we'll see what they come out with. Also, did anyone see the reports that Home is selling clothes like hotcakes? I'm kinda suprised people would drop $5 bucks for a stupid santa outfit, but apparently there are lots of people out there. If they actually fill Home with some decent content I think it could be huge for them. As to the 360 being done, there's nothing mind blowing that'll be released exclusively for the 360. There's some extra GTAIV content about to be released, and maybe a sequel or two (like Mass Effect 2), but all of their major exclusives have already been released and any follow-up will be on the next-next-gen console Microsoft puts out.
  12. They haven't released Zelda yet - that was a GC port. Jumping into the Wii debate - I'm very disappointed in how they set up their schedule of releases. Basically there's been nothing since Kart, Mario and Wii Fit that has been worth buying, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the near future (a new Zelda "sometime") I think the PS3 is going to dominate in 2009. 360 is over in terms of exclusive games, but the PS3 will put out Killzone 2 (i'm predicting it'll be the best console FPS ever... surpassing the overrated Halo) in Feb and God of War III in the fall. Not to mention 2009 MLB The Show. Add in Resident Evil 5 and it's going to be a fun year for gaming. Did anyone pick up anything good for Xmas? Something under the rader? I got World of Goo, a ridiculously fun and addictive Wii Ware and PC game ($15 for hours and hours of enjoyment). I also picked up NBA 2k9. I've been debating whether or not to pick up Rock Band 2. The AC\DC track pack would be awesome. But I don't really have enough friends that live close enough to play as a band on a regular basis, so I doubt it'd be worth the money.
  13. Purdue v Illinois tonight. I think Illinois will lose, but I'd like for them to keep it close.
  14. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 09:22 AM) Rypien, Hostetler and Roethlisberger dont belong in the same sentence as Peyton and Young, and Eli has had 1 and a half good years. Im trying to figure out the definition of a fluke here I think Roeth at least has proven that he's not a one and done - he gets his team into the playoffs. But I guess if he tanks from here on out he would be considered a fluke (though he's still a franchise style QB). Rypien and Hostetler are definitely flukes. I guess my point was that out of the 27 on that list, the overwhelming majority (19-20ish) are upper-echelon caliber QB's.
  15. I have seen both Tony Dungy and Joe Torre yell at refs/umps. I have never seen Lovie raise his voice to anyone. I'm not saying he has to be an ass, or that he has to be so outspoken that it's borderline annoying. But guess what, get pissed a little when things don't go your way and your team might rally behind you. Or better yet, when you have moron players making moron plays, if you get in their face and let them know about it they won't make the same mistake again. Remember how many personal foul and blocking in the back penalties this team had in those early losses? Imagine if the coach acted like he cared a little instead of just staring at the f'n jumbo-tron trying to figure it out. Maybe Tillman's personal foul call in the Tampa Bay game wouldn't have happened.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) --O-Line needs at least 2 more solid bodies than it has. --Defensive backfield needs some healthy talent influx. --Lovie's coaching team is just not good at their jobs. Fix those things and this is a playoff competitive team. --As an added bonus... maybe, for once in their history, the Bears could go out and get a top half QB. That would push them over the top. Don't hold your breath! I'm pretty certain the McCaskeys and Angelo have determined that the QB position just isn't very valuable. History certainly shows that to be the case... Winning SuperBowl QB's: 1) Terry Bradshaw (4) 2) Joe Montana (4) 3) Troy Aikman (3) 4) Tom Brady (3) 5) Bart Starr (2) 6) Bob Griese (2) 7) Roger Staubach (2) 8) Jim Plunkett (2) 9) John Elway (2) 10) Joe Namath (1) 11) Len Dawson (1) 12) Johnny Unitas (1) 13) Ken Stabler (1) 14) Joe Theisman (1) 15) Jim McMahon (1) 16) Phil Simms (1) 17) Doug Williams (1) 18) Jeff Hostetler (1) 19) Mark Rypien (1) 20) Steve Young (1) 21) Brett Favre (1) 22) Kurt Warner (1) 23) Trent Dilfer (1) 24) Brad Johnson (1) 25) Ben Roethlisberger (1) 26) Peyton Manning (1) 27) Eli Manning (1) Take away the flukey Johnsons and Dilfers on this list, and basically you need a franchise, if not hall of fame, caliber QB to win.
  17. Put me in the camp of this team sucks, and will continue to suck, until Lovie and his crew are run out of town. Three games proved to me this year that Lovie can not coach: 1) Atlanta - how on earth you allow your team to give up a 25-30 yard out pattern, the only possible play to lose that game, is beyond me. 2) Tampa Bay - not to outdo himself, Lovie also allowed his team to give up a 99 yard drive with Brian Freakin' Griese throwing something like 400 passes in one game (thanks to some bone-head personal foul penalties) 3) Detroit - we go so f'n lucky to win this game it wasn't even funny. I bet we were the only team out of 16 to be that close to losing to the worst team in NFL history. Of course this doesn't include 3 out of the last 4 games, which were won in the last 5 seconds of the game thanks to some EXTREMELY lucky defense and special teams plays. And for me, what made it all worse was Lovie's annoying non-chalant style of "well, we made some mistakes, we look forward to next week." Has the guy ever scolded a player? Or does he just look at the scoreboard with a blank face to find out if what just happened is real? The "experts" at the beginning of the season had this team pegged perfectly. They are/were, at best, a 7 win team that got extremely lucky with its schedule and with some blown plays on the other side of the ball. Also, I'm not a Grossman fan, but someone explain to me how Orton basically has a Grossman season (horrible game followed by good game followed by horrible game) but no one is talking about it. In fact, the sports media in town are talking about considering Orton as the future QB. Excuse me, I just barfed on my laptop. The entire team needs to be gutted. The Defense is old and declining rapidly (except for the goal line stop against the Eagles, can someone point to a time the D actually stopped a drive when they needed to?), the O-line is beyond terrible, there are no passing threats except for Olsen (who can't block anyone) and Forte (the lone brightspot on the team, but now probably a brightspot that will shine one year shorter because of the workload he was given as a rookie). There are just too many holes to fix. Unfortunately, like the Cubs, the Bears make a s***-ton of money so there's absolutely no reason to make any changes. Be prepared for at least 2 more seasons of missing the playoffs. Hopefully we can draft another 5-6 players that in a couple of years will be decent. /depressing rant
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) The Dreamcast was awesome. Underrated... the first time I turned on NFL 2k on that system, I knew I was witnessing the next wave of video games. The players left tracks in the snow, you could see their breath. I still say the 2k series was way better than Madden. EA taking football and losing baseball killed my two favorite sports franchises (NFL 2k/MVP Baseball). I haven't found games I'm entirely happy with since. Those f***ing MLB 2k games are beyond fixable at this point, while MVP had PERFECT gameplay in 2005. It's a f***ing shame, I can only imagine how great MVP Baseball 2009 would be on any of the newer generation systems. I was one of the unlucky (or chosen few?) that bought a Dreamcast. While the system was great for its time, it just didn't have the quality games to back it up. As far as the baseball games, mvp 05 was the best IMO, but I gotta say that 08 The Show has made me forget about it. While it's not perfect, it's close. Certainly the best since.
  19. riddle me this: If you're a normal student caught with pot, you get what, a warning? The 2nd time? Don't you get kicked out? How are these guys allowed to not only stay in school, but get a free ride by staying on the team? And I have ZERO sympathy for IU through all of this. It's their fault they hired a guy they knew was scummy.
  20. I think there are still a couple in the quad cities.
  21. You know who became hot recently that wasn't 10 years ago? Hannah Storm. If ever there was evidence that a hair style can change someones appearance... http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/watchdog...rlanTurkell.jpg vs. http://media.collegepublisher.com/media/pa...9cd0e1-57-1.jpg
  22. Agreed. I think it's the gimmick of the motion control mixed with the "family" link they've created to the system that has allowed them to produce absolute crap. They know (and 3rd pary developers know) that you can stick a good looking cartoon picture with some action words on the front of the box and mom/dad/grandma/grandpa will think it's a great game and buy it. See: Wii Music.
  23. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 08:04 PM) If you ask me, it sucks. Yeah I finally got a chance to mess with it over the weekend. IMO it's a cool idea in theory, but it'll depend on how much content they get on there. Right now it's pretty weak, but if they create a truly diverse world (of advertising) I could see it being big. For example in the "Central Plaza" area there are lots of stages. If they would put on a show of sorts from a real band to try and get some business, I could see myself getting my toon there and listening/watching. It's a little too early for me to judge right now since there's not much to do. I picked up NBA 2k9 and Civilization: Colonization. Civ was only 20 bucks and i'm a big fan of the series. This one is probably my favorite as it gets rid of the technology aspect and replaces it with a big trading system. You basically have to create a massive trading empire to build enough troops and then eventually revlolt against the major power that financed your initial trip. 2k9 is awesome. I still think the menus suck (why does it have to be so f'n confusing?) but the graphics and gameplay are top notch.
