2016-2017 NCAA football thread

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 04:40 PM) He's guaranteed right now about 39 million and it can increase based on what I saw. 39+ is the min If you take out the 4 years already guaranteed based on his prior contract that number drops (it's essentially a 6 season extension). Regardless, it's not a lot of money for a top 15-20 team that goes bowling ever year and needs some momentum to keep up ticket sales. All the articles i've read state there was a huge drop off in 2014 before the Rose Bowl season last year. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 04:22 PM) His buyout went from 8 to over 40 million dollars. Recruits knew he would still be coaching Iowa for the next 5 years already. The potential of 40. He's not guaranteed that if they blow for those last 5 years. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 04:13 PM) Is the buyout a two way street in that in order to leave the hiring party would have to pay Iowa that amount? Doesn't the buyout essentially mean he is not going anywhere? Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers, and Maryland would die for the stability that he is bringing to that program. Fitz at NU is very comparable. Keep the program clean, keep the team interesting and make a run at hte Rose Bowl from time to time. They usually have clauses that include set offs if not full waivers if he's hired somewhere else. There are also for-cause firings that may include a waiver, e.g., if he caused a huge scandal. -

I think you guys are overreacting a bit. Dude's getting paid 4-5 million a year, around top 15-20 in the country. The top guys make 7. He's maintained the "go to a bowl practically ever year and highly rated bowls ever 3-4 years" like Frye. For a school like Iowa, that's pretty standard and worth the price of admission IMO, especially coming off a 12-2 Rose Bowl year. Buyout seems odd, but ultimately if he keeps going to bowl games that's all pennies in the jar. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 10:50 AM) He's said he has no interest in leaking Trump stuff and that he does have some. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2016/08/26/a...ny-trump-leaks/ ? It says he has some and will release some but that none of it is good. I can buy that. Trump hasn't been in politics for decades and God know his campaign isn't organized.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 10:41 AM) FWIW Assange has made this threat about various people many times in the past and has always fell flat on his face. He even made this promise about Clinton already, saying he was going to drop something during her DNC speech. It really betrays his claims of being non-partisan, too. Strategically timing releases of material that would be politically damaging to only one party while saying you won't release anything on the other isn't exactly non-partisan. The guy's terrible for sure, but is this because of partisanship or availability of information? We know he was provided the hacked Clinton/DNC stuff. Does he have RNC/Trump stuff to leak?

QUOTE (brett05 @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 10:25 AM) Right, you explained it and I countered it showing that the court is indeed liberal leaning. Thankfully you're wrong. With each day Trump closes the gap or slowly takes the lead. It's really Trump's to lose. Don't be fooled by the "Trump has a 45-43 lead in the latest poll" stories. He's getting crushed or losing by a sizeable margin in most of the states he needs to win. Unless the vague Assange threat of dropping some major news on Hillary this week is legit bad, there's really no way she loses.

The Killing was awful. Red herring after red herring after red herring.

Holy s*** is this sad: the Bears have made the playoffs only 5 times AD (After Ditka). 5 times in 24 seasons (1992). It will soon be 25.

1. The Wire 2. Deadwood (criminally underrated here, not even a spot on the poll!) 3. GoT 4. Curb 5. Sopranos Season 1 of Sopranos would be the best ever, but it was a slow downhill fall from there. There was a lot of bad Sopranos that people forget about (e.g., everything with Jackie Jr. and Ralphie, Season 6a, etc.)

I get that, but they're also claiming that he's getting the biggest signing bonus in years and will be the 2nd highest paid rookie next year after a QB. It's not like they're going cheap on him AND demanding unreasonable terms. If true, why isn't that a reasonable trade off?
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 02:11 PM) No s*** it does. They didn't include the fact that they want him to take a deal that no other top 5 pick has taken under current CBA. http://www.sbnation.com/2016/8/8/12402198/...go-chargers-why http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/agents-t...s-the-chargers/ Is he getting paid more than usual though? If so, I fail to see what the problem is. Offset language has been included in deals before, so has deferred payments for signing bonuses. In either case, if the dude is getting more consideration for those extra clauses, I don't see why it's so s***ty on the Chargers' part. Going to the media was dumb, i'll agree with that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 02:26 PM) I believe I've read that this one it is specifically patents on the delivery system that make it difficult for generic competition, not the drug itself. Right, but you would think with the size of our medical device industry some engineer somewhere could have discovered a work around. Especially for a 50% markup for each one sold (and they sell a lot).
-
At prices that high, it's amazing some other competitor hasn't swooped in to make a generic brand and completely cut the legs out from under Mylan. edit: according to random internet site, apparently there have been attempts but the FDA is acting as a road block. https://mises.org/blog/lack-epipen-competitors-fdas-fault For those prices i'd buy a syringe and some Epinephrine. My niece has severe allergies and I know my sister has used Epipens in the past. She's never complained about the cost though.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) They are messing around. They are f***ing idiots. They want him to take a deal that other #3 picks don't take. They want him to take a deferred Signing Bonus but they also want to recoup money if he's injured or cut prior to his deal ending. If he goes back into next year's draft at age 22, the Chargers receive nothing in return. This is firmly on the Chargers at this point. Link? That seems counter to what the Charges stated in their press release, which is that he's getting the biggest signing bonus of any player drafted in the last 2 years.

Yeah that's pretty f***ed up. I wonder, after taking into account insurance adjustments, how much those pens really cost. The stated price and the real price are often dramatically different.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 11:10 AM) My only rule is when I go to disneyland / world it can't be super hot and I can't go in peak season. As long as I don't have just absurd lines, I think it is a fantastic and fun place to go. It is absolutely a lot of work with the kids but seeing them run around and smile, etc, makes it all worth it. Plus, you get to be a kid again too and there is something nostalgic about the place (maybe partly because I grew up near Disneyland so lots of locals had season passes...before disneyland prices went absurd, so had plenty of fun adventures there with friends and kind of relieve that whenever I do go back). I actually think our first real plane trip will be to Disneyworld and I should have a conference there in the winter (I think February so when most schools are back) which might actually be a perfect time. The only hard part would be the leg of the flight my wife would have to do on her own with the little ones. Both years we went in early September, when park levels were, at most, 4-5 out of 10. The weather was warm, but not unbearable. it was also during the Food and Wine festival at Epcot, which is a blast. I'm in agreement with you - i'd never go during peak season. I've already told my wife if we go again with our 2nd son we're just taking the 1st out of school.

Anyone know anything about coastal North Carolina and have recommendations for activities/food? We're heading to Holden Beach for a wedding and spending a week or so there. It's about halfway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. Seems to be a VERY laid back beach town.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 18, 2016 -> 02:02 PM) Went to Disney over the weekend. I feel like after that I need an actual vacation for myself. I think my wife and I are officially Disney people. We love going there and a big component is planning the trip. We've gone 2 out of the last 3 years with our son who was 2 and then 3. The key is spending 3-5 days at Disney and then going over to a beach town for the remainder of your vacation to relax. Hopefully you had a good time. Too many people read up on the hype/hysteria about how awful Disney is and I just don't get it. Yes, having a screaming 3 year old in the middle of the park sucks. Yes, they are some long ass days. But when your kid freaks out over seeing Mickey or riding Splash Mountain or whatever? Totally worth the hassle.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 18, 2016 -> 01:10 AM) So here is why stranger things is so awesome. It's an 80's horror movie but 8 hours long. Netflix allows them to really draw out the story I really enjoyed it. Probably my favorite show of the year thus far. My only small gripe is that I feel the last 2 episodes were rushed. They had such a good, slow build over the first 6 episodes, and then it all concluded very quickly.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 12:30 PM) Now that the confession is deemed involuntary, the state really has nothing else to try him on, correct? I read the state has 90 days to appeal They may appeal the decision, but I'd be shocked if they try again.
-
Here's the decision if anyone is interested: https://www.scribd.com/document/321033786/B...&from_embed For some reason Dassey's attorney didn't make an ineffective assistance of counsel argument, only a conflict of interest argument. And it sounds like the Court probably would have agreed that his initial attorney was ineffective. They overturned the conviction on the basis that his confession wasn't voluntary. There's a good analysis there, basically agreeing with everyone that watched the show - you've got a dumb 16 year old without a parent present being asked to provide details about the crime and the kid just continues to guess until he gives them the information that they want.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 01:06 PM) Based on polling as of today, Clinton currently has 1023 ways to win. Trump has 1. (scroll down to the bottom)
