2016 Republican Thread
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 04:49 PM) Here's the tweet: re: abortion TRUMP: The answer is there has to be some form of punishment. CHRIS MATTHEWS: For the woman? TRUMP: Yes All it indicates is that Trump favors punishments for women who get abortions. There's absolutely nothing in there about an illegal vigilante-like roundup of women. He's a presidential candidate who is giving his opinions on how he wants the law to work. Imagine the town hall conversation was this: Matthews: "If Congress passed a repeal bill for Obamacare, would you sign it?" Trump: "Yes, I want to end Obamacare." Tapper tweets: "Trump says he wants to end Obamacare" Would that be out of context? Is Donald Trump SO INSANE that Tapper really needs to specify that Trump's position on ending Obamacare is related to the actual legal process of repealing a law and not, say, Trump wanting to become a dictator who disbands Congress and repeals Obamacare by personal fiat? Is he SO INSANE that anyone sincerely saw Tapper's abortion tweet and thought Trump was advocating that women be rounded up and thrown in jail under non-existent laws? (And by who, anyway? secret police?) Yes, of course people think that Trump wants to punish women who get abortions, regardless of the law. Hence why he had to back track with a statement yesterday. The whole discussion was premised on the fact that abortion gets outlawed and that women would therefore be doing something illegal. I'm not sure how ignoring that isn't a huge, huge problem. Nor do I understand why it's a "garbage" position. If an act is illegal and you commit the act, why shouldn't you be held accountable? Drugs are illegal. We arrest people who use and possess drugs. We don't ignore the low level user and focus only on drug dealers. Driving while drunk is illegal. We don't ignore the driver and charge the person supplying the alcohol. If you take part in an illegal activity, guess what, you should be charged. You're a criminal.

So Illinois insider people on twitter seem to think Tilmon to Illinois is a done deal, with Goodwin to follow. Announcement in the next week or two. If true, finally some positive news for the program

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 04:09 PM) He explicitly said "you have to ban it." That after previously having expressed his opposition to Roe vs Wade and saying he only wants exceptions made for rape/incest/medical reasons. The "position" you outlined is just silly. You don't want women jailed under non-existent laws? Uh, no kidding. All you're saying is that you support the rule of law. The important thing is *what you want the law to be* regarding abortion. And both you and Trump want it to include women being punished for having abortions. And most people (including a lot in the pro-life community) think that's awful. Hence the backlash. Those are still two different positions that you're not articulating in 140 character tweets. They make it seem like, right now, before anything is outlawed, Trump wants to round up women who get abortions and put them in jail. The implication being he does not support the rule of law. How do you not see that as being out of context with what he said?

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 03:20 PM) ...which is the position he advocates. HEY YOU PUT MY OPINION IN THE CONTEXT OF MY OPINIONS - WAY OUT OF LINE He may, but not based on the quote/answer he was giving at that particular time, which is lazy journalism. I'm pro-life. I think women who get abortions (by choice) beyond the first 6-8 weeks are awful people. I too would like to see them jailed if it were outlawed. But because abortions up to 22-23 weeks are allowed, i'm not advocating we jail people for it (up to that point, anyway). Do we know for a fact Trump doesn't have the same position? If so, those tweets are out of context.

Here's another one, btw: The headline is also bad ("Trump: Women who have abortions should be punished"). It's not until the end of the first paragraph that you read "if it's outlawed."

Believing that people should be punished for illegal activities is a bad political position these days? Yeesh.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) Russell wouldn't be brought in to lead, he would be brought in to play. The guy is 19 years old, he did a dumbass thing. Acting like he is some pariah in the locker room because he filmed a teammate admitting he cheated on Iggy Azalia is funny to me Agreed. I love how the cheating asshole is getting a big pass here.

QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 10:59 AM) i really do not totally agree.... we are talking about pro coaches and they should have been able to over come the obstacles you mention. a great coach would have, a inexperience or lousy coach would not have been able too. hence the cliche of "being over his head not able to recognize and overcome the obvious." well the players knows this as well and they will judge the coach as everyone else would. the FO did not help, esp in getting a better asst coaches who can help. I'm not suggesting the FO or Hoiberg are without fault here. I just think it's too early to call Hoiberg a bust. He was given a bad roster, he was given a roster ready to implode on itself (Gasol sulking, Butler/Rose not being able to play together given Butler's rise to fame, Noah accepting he's terrible on offense and not the player he was 2-3 seasons prior, etc), and he had to deal with a lot of injuries. Not a recipe for success, even for a good coach.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 10:41 AM) It started a cascade, it is up there with a bunch of tremendously bad decisions. Like it or not Noah has been viewed as a leader on this team for years, and Hoiberg cut his nuts off in front of the team, and all season there has been zero leadership visible. But hey, Niko started. Awesome move Fred, lost team unity and leadership in favor of starting a guy who clearly was not ready They were like 12 games over .500 when Noah hurt his shoulder in mid-Jan, beating a slew of championship contenders in the process. They kept losing to s***ty teams, otherwise that record would have been even better. Even with Noah's injury, the eventual downfall to what we have now wasn't even on the radar. That move may have started the tenure of Hoiberg off on a weird way, but it didn't affect the Bulls play. Injuries, lack of desire, crappy defense (and offense), shoddy rotations, etc. did them in.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 10:25 AM) Seriously man, everything is overblown when you disagree with it I don't think that's true. I'm responding to a statement that the Noah benching (not the way it was done) was the WORST mistake Hoiberg has made this season. Of all the things that happened this year, the Noah benching was the first, but also one of the least important.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 30, 2016 -> 09:31 AM) Doing it and how he handled it are two completely separate issues. He told everyone that Noah came to him and suggested that he come off the bench, all of the media went to Noah immediately and asked him about it and he had no idea what they were talking about. In his misguided attempt to "protect" Noah he inadvertently embarrassed him AND revealed to him that he was coming off the bench through the media. The decision was correct, the follow through was college level bulls*** I think that was all overblown. Noah didn't deny having the talk, he just didn't want it to seem like he had offered to play a lesser role, which is what Hoiberg said. In that talk he knew that he was coming off the bench. He didn't learn that through the media. Still, again, that's a non-issue when it comes to evaluating what went wrong with this team. A professional like Noah could (and really, did) brush that off as a rookie-coach mistake.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
f*** and no. Noah has been/was so incredibly dreadful on the offensive end. He couldn't shoot. He couldn't get put backs. He couldn't shoot FT's. You brought in a guy to change up the offense and score points. Playing Noah and Gasol together wasn't going to achieve that goal. I backed Hoiberg on that decision 100% and I still do. Noah could have been an anchor on the defensive unit that played down the stretch when the Bulls had a solid lead. That would have been perfect. Expecting him to play the 4 with Gasol and actually contribute anything meaningful was a pipe dream. Of all the things to complain about with the front office and Hoiberg, this issue is not on the list.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 29, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) You're opinion, but he could win with s*** for a roster. He won lots of games against a s***ty Eastern Conference. I'm not trying to argue that he's not a good coach. He's a very good coach. But the guy had his own issues. He wasn't perfect. And he's certainly not a top 3 coach. Off the top of my head I'd take Pop, Carlisle, Budenholzer, Stevens, Doc, and Kerr before him. Thibs is arguably behind Vogel and Spoelstra too.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 29, 2016 -> 09:48 AM) You said it yourself in an earlier post though. 3 or 4 teams have a chance to win the title every year. The Bulls looked like they were going to have a long window starting with the Rose MVP year, but without Rose, that window effectively closed. A lot needed to go right for this to be a championship caliber roster. Rose needed to return to 85-90% of his MVP form. Noah needed to be the guy he was two seasons ago when he was in the MVP voting conversation. Butler needed to continue his rise to elite status. And the problems with chemistry last year needed to be because of Thibs. Add to that Mirotic continuing to improve and not regressing horribly and some decent contributions from Snell and/or McDermott and this could have been a championship caliber roster. There are a lot of unknowns there, but the point is that is a more reasonable road to contention than blowing it up and starting over. With the benefit of hindsight, things almost definitely wouldn't have been worse with Thibs this year. But Noah still wouldn't be right. And the chemistry issues wouldn't have gone away. The question now is, are we at the end of the Bulls' window or, with a couple tweaks to the roster, can they get competitive again quickly... It's the close of a window. With Rose and Butler alone they're good enough to be in basketball purgatory at least another year, but there's no one else to sign to make them contenders. The FA list sucks next year. The draft isn't very deep. So it's at least another season before anything can be done. Next year maybe you bring back Noah on a home town discount. Get rid of Gasol. Pray that Rose/Butler can learn to play together. Pray that Niko and Doug learn to play defense. And that Portis develops. The only other option is to start trading pieces to a team with a FA that's got a year left but is going to walk. I'm not sure who's on that list, if anyone.

Northern Iowa deserved to lose based on the turnovers and inability to get the ball in, but holy crap did the refs help A&M. They got destroyed on double teams with no calls and then the and-1 was a phantom call with no contact.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) When I saw the crowd of teams that was at LaLumiere to recruit him, I was pretty surprised to hear that he was considered a favorite to Illinois. Unless he has a buddy he wants to play with, he has some big time offers coming in. He does. Illinois already has a commit that he's tight with.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:35 AM) Yep. There's a clear lack of leadership in the program at the moment. Unfortunate because the Lovie bounce (positive press for the athletic department) could have provided some goodwill to the basketball program, but that's... that's not happening now. I can condone second chances for non-violent offenses. I can't condone second chances for Tate or Nunn if the allegations against them are true. I'm fully on board that it's time for a fresh start. 5% of me wants to reserve judgment here. We blasted Tate but that seems, at least according to his lawyers with some supposed documentary evidence, that his case was all BS and made up. Who knows if Nunn's in the same situation. Still though, the fact that these guys get anywhere near a situation like that is what's troubling.
