  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) And if Contreras stays off the market. And if Garland stays off the market. I was wondering the same thing, I think that Contreras will end up staying and Garland could be moved. It is just like KW to move someone no one is thinking about. Also Minaya wants someone who will be under contract at the end of the year so he may be the guy that brings back some prospects from the Mets. I guess Javier could be another option, but I dont see KW trading him after just extending him.
  2. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 02:57 PM) Yeah if people think their going to get Buehrle for some damn scrap heap projects their nuts. I agree, we have no need to trade Buerhle. If KW is not getting back a package of at least one A level prospect and two others then there is no advantage to not holding Buerhle and taking the picks when he walks, same goes for JD.
  3. Obviously the world of baseball is very dynamic and the status of prospects can rise and fall over the next year. But looking ahead to the draft a year from now, it appears that there will be some good offensive talent available like Pedro Alvarez, who the Sox might be able to get with their pick the way they are playing, and Jordan Danks with a comp pick if a 15-20 range team signs Dye or Buerhle. So I think we really need to put a lot into scouting next years draft before we make any deals to decide if the players we would get back in any trade would be better than what we would get in the draft. I would rather not trade A level players for B prospects if we could do better in the draft.
  4. By trading the first SP of the year the Tigers have set the price for an end of the rotation starter. Depending on what they get back that will show what the market is for a starting pitcher. Any deal that KW makes he will need to get back whatever the Tigers got proporionate to how much better Buerhle is than Maroth.
  5. From ESPN: • The Mets have been the team most linked to a Mark Buehrle trade. But the buzz among baseball people we've surveyed is that the Braves are much more interested than the Mets are. An official of one club that has been kicking around ideas with Mets GM Omar Minaya says this of anyone who thinks the Mets would trade Lastings Milledge for Buehrle (or any rent-a-player): "They're nuts." The Mets would talk about Milledge only in a deal for a power arm they could control until at least 2009. (Hmmm. Dontrelle Willis, perhaps?). • The Braves, meanwhile, don't want to wait much longer to upgrade their rotation. So we're hearing they've been feeling out a bunch of teams in search of a starter -- young or established -- that they can slot behind John Smoltz and Tim Hudson. They're not interested in those Mike Maroth fifth-starter type arms that are out there, though. So Buehrle, says one executive who has talked to them, "fits just about every scenario" they're shopping for. But the White Sox haven't flipped the "sell" switch yet. So the Buehrle Mart won't open until at least the first week of July. Sounds like Braves are the better destination if we want prospects, or maybe we can make the Mets pay a higher price to keep Buerhle out of Atlanta or vice versa.
  6. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 01:38 PM) I will say until my face turns blue that Milledge > Gomez. For the love of God, Milledge > Gomez. Martinez>Milledge Martinez, Milledge, and Pelfrey would be a good starting point if they are getting an extenstion. I would also want a middle infield prospect back as well. If Dye were included too, that would get very pricey for the Mets farm system, probably moreso than Minaya will pay.
  7. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) To be honest - I would rather stick Fields in LF and bring Ichiro in to play RF. We will probably get Milledge to play CF for Mark Buehrle, so there is our OF in 2008. Let Crede play 3rd and trade him once his value gets a bit higher in 2008 and move Fields to 3B. I don't think Dunn really fits in our plan - especially the way Fields has looked lately. I think that if you can wrap Dunn up he would be a good replacement at DH for Thome when he leaves after next season, if that means a year of him struggling in LF I am all for it as long as we can get him extended as part of the deal. Then Fields has next season as a utility player rotating between 1B, 3B, and LF giving everyone a day off. Dunn is only 28 and has many productive years left, and if you can add someone like Miguel Cabrera as a FA when Thome walks in 2009 that is a pretty formidable core to a lineup. I also think Ichiro is getting old, and I dont think he will even consider Chicago as an option especially if we are in rebuilding mode.
  8. If the Sox would deal for Dunn, we would need to extend him as part of the deal. Have a three day window to negotiate and if we cannot come to a deal then we dont make the trade.
  9. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) Sweeney's bat won't rate as average anywhere but CF next season. (Think Alex Rios in '04/'05) He figures to be able to competently be able to cover CF for at least a few years before he loses a little bit of range. Short of signing one of the big name free agent CFers next year, if Sweeney is being penciled in anywhere (and given his stagnation this year, that's not a guarantee) it should be CF with the Sox looking to find replacements at the easier to fill LF and RF posistions. (Though I fully expect Erstad to be back taking up one of those spots) I think we might go into next season with an OF of LF Fields, CF Terrero, RF Sweeney, unless Milledge is brought in a trade. Then it would be LF Sweeney, CF Terrero, and RF Milledge. I do not expect next season to be a great year for our OF, but I think our guys will have some growing pains out there as they get accustomed to the big league level. But I think that will pay off in 2009. With the money we save, maybe we can make a run at Santana in 2009 as well.
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) Just a hunch but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Josh Byrnes is not looking to deal the #1 overall pick in the '05 draft for 3 months of Dye and a future #5 starter. I'm just guessing though. Why are they going to start instituting a DH in the NL? They dont have room for all of these guys, and they would like to win too, and thats not going to happen unless they get another bat for the stretch. Broadway will probably be a number 3 starter in the national league and they would also get two more draft picks to stock some more talent. If they want to win they would make the deal, they have a full outfield, and their infield is pretty stacked as well at this point. The only position that are not deep at is 2B, but they have Bonifacio who will probably step up and take that spot once the O-dog is a free agent. They have Gonzales who will be in LF, Quentin RF, Young CF, Tracy 3B, Drew SS, Hudson 2B, and Jackson at 1B next season. If they can resign Dye he could be their everday first basemen. And he lives in Arizona so they may get him to sign at a discount.
  11. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 10:54 AM) Milledge > Gomez. Gomez is just a flavor of the week... Milledge brings much more to the table. Any trade I would make with the Mets would need to bring back Martinez Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG OPS E 2007 55 214 29 56 9 1 3 17 76 19 48 3 4 .331 .355 .262 .686 3 These are his AA numbers this season, not really that impressive until you figure he is only 18 and still has time to develop. Again I would rather get a package of some younger guys than just Pelfrey and Milledge. If Pelfrey was that good he would be pitching in NY now and the Mets wouldn't be looking for a pitcher. I would like to see Martinez, Guerra, and Milledge for Mark and ________.
  12. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 10:47 AM) "We just might be dumb enough to win this thing". Embarrassed would be a better word to describe upper mgmt's feelings rather than pissed. Jerry apologized on the charter before it took off from John Wayne. A Sox staffer had them printed. How about Dye and Broadway to the D-backs for Upton, Reynolds and Callaspo? Pena can step in as the set up man next year, Callaspo can man either MI position and Upton would be a MI/CF prospect with speed that the organization wants. Reynolds and Callaspo could be your MI next year and would allow you to move Juan in the off season for another piece. With the Dbacks having their OF filled already with prospects galore, and trying to make a run this year with Johnson and Quentin struggling in RF this makes sense for both sides. Plus the Dbacks would then get two draft picks if they are not able to sign JD.
  13. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) while i am not a fan of trading buehrle, i'd advocate dealing him if you get a really killer deal that includes multiple prospects. however, to get this i think there needs to be a competitive market that could drive up the cost. with this in mind, who would be other potential suitors for buehrle? the only one i've seen mentioned is the cardinals, and they really don't have much in terms of prospects we'd be interested in. outside of them, who else could be interested? to me, the key to this whole thing is making sure that there are three or four legitimate suitors who can be pitted against each other. Off the top of my head, the Mets, Braves, Yankees, and Mariners are all teams that need another pitcher I guess you can add the D-backs and Brewers to the list too but I think the return from those teams would be smaller. The other thing that we shouldn't forget is that not only will we be trading Buerhle but also the two first round picks he would net, the same goes for Dye. I think for that reason one of them will stay so that KW has a chance to draft Danks at slot.
  14. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 08:10 AM) Then why else do you like them? WHat have you seen of them at the major league level that is so attractive to you? Is it because of the couple of scouting reports that you read on them? I'm just trying to figure this out. Because we would all rather have prospects than Damian Easely, Jose Valentin, or El Duque, because those are the only pieces that the Mets would part with while trying to get to the WS, and none of them would help get the Sox back on track long term.
  15. I would like to see Mark traded for Martinez, Guerra, and Milledge. Martinez has a sweet stroke but is a couple years away, he and Guerra are both 18 and have at least a year a piece in the minors. Milledge I am not in love with, but I think he gives you a player you can plug in right away. Martinez could be ready when Thome leaves so he can replace his spot in the lineup. Really this is the framework I would expect in any deal we make. One near ready player and at least one more prospect who is a little ways away. This way you can build depth in the minors and still have an acceptable package on the field.
  16. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 08:03 AM) That is sorta my take. We are in a rebuilding mode in my view and Dunn is more of a player to be acquired by a team with his particular need. His cost simply is too high and there will be virtually no returns (unless you honestly think him being acquired makes us post-season contenders). If you really believe that (then I think you're drunk), but if you do then I understand the desire to trade. I think that if the plan is to trade Thome, this deal would make good sense if you don't have to pay a premium price. The problem is the Reds will want at least what we expect to get out of Dye, and when we are trying to build I dont see that happening.
  17. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) Why do you make this statement? You do realize as bad as McCarthy supposedly was last year, Danks gives up more hits, more walks per inning and has just a slightly lower home run allowed rate than McCarthy did last year. I still don't understand how this site has McCarthy one of the worst pitchers to ever put on a uniform and Danks in the Hall of Fame at this point. I was just reiterating what SSI has said in an ironic way because he said McCarthy blew ass, yet he brought back 2 of the Rangers top ten prospects.
  18. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) While I have no problem seeing Mark-Thome-Dye all shipped off for the right deal, Williams has to be very careful. He doesn't need to worry about the diehard fan, but the casual fan is the one that can be turned by the media and press, and next year could get very ugly on the South Side in terms of attendance. The casual fan is being turned off now by the media and the accumulating losses.
  19. ESPN insider says that the Reds are trying to move Adam Dunn and mentioned that Whitesox were one of the teams that had scouts in attendance on Tuesday night. The Dayton Daily News reported that scouts from a number of teams, including Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, the White Sox, Detroit and others, were in attendance at Tuesday's game against the Angels. But GM Wayne Krivsky wouldn't comment on the Dunn rumors. I dont think that that Kenny could be targeting Dunn to go with the free swinging lineup he has now. I guess another option is that the Sox were scouting some Angels players. If Dunn is traded he becomes a free agent at the end of the year.
  20. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:20 PM) The PR nightmare is that he costs them $7M and is very cheap in this day and age. I would think they could move him without giving the cash and use it elsewhere. Now image the PR nightmare if the FA market doesn't pan out and the money is not reinvested...... Doing the right thing isnt always the popular thing. But when we can look back in a few years and see how the pieces brought in as part of the deal have helped the orgranization it can be looked back as a major part of building our franchise, much like Cleveland can look at the Colon trade.
  21. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:18 PM) yeah this was my reaction too... although i do think he'll leave seattle Yeah I had read an article that Boston was targetting him in the offseason.
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 11:00 PM) All I know is that if we're in a situation where we have to give up Buehrle, Garland, Thome, etc., and we keep Vazquez and Contreras, then KW better be fired. Really I see that as a very real possibility, but if we trade some of those guys hopefully we can trade Contreras's contract with one of the other deals. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 11:50 AM) Understood, but Seattle really has nothing to offer. Their minor league system isn't very good and Ichiro is a FA next year. If we could get Figgins and Ervin Santana (buying low and hoping that both bounce back) from LAA, it MIGHT be worth it just for the sake of getting younger and filling some holes. Then again, I'm not sure that the Angels would even want to do that deal. I'd rather see a deal of Thome and Mackowiak for Adenhart, Saunders, Aybar and Willits.
  23. QUOTE(DaGame2584 @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 11:27 PM) Are the following trades possible or should I drop the x box controller? White Sox Get: C. Billingsley & J. Loney(or A. Either) Dodgers Get: J. Dye White Sox Get: Salty & J. Devine & K. Johnson Braves Get: M. Buehrle & T. Iguchi & M. MacDougal White Sox Get: A. Reyes Cardinals Get J. Contreras + cash Tell me what you think about these deals. I think I stretched the Sox/Braves deal too much. I originally thought Salty & Devine for Buehrle. So do I play too much x box or what? The Braves are not going to give up Kelly Johnson, who looks to have 2B nailed down for a while, and two other prospects for a mediocre (this season) reliever and two free agents. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 05:29 AM) I agree on trading Contreras--I would deal him by the deadline. His K numbers are steadily declining, and seems to be on a Freddy Garcia path. But some team will take him on and give up a decent package for him. I would like to deal Contreras too if he has any value, and the way he has been pitching his value is not high enough to net anything worthwhile in return.
  24. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 03:49 PM) We are bringing them up now? Where? Danks did not come from our system. McCarthy blew ass. We would still have the same pitching prospects as before - except Danks I believe. I don't see the difference between how it is now an how it would be after the trade. And the Extra Innings deal would hurt the Sox financially? How so? Well, McCarthy, who blew ass, and brought us back Danks, came from our system. We have Gio, Broadway, Haeger who could eventually be plugged into the rotation as other pitchers leave in free agency. Those guys would all be gone. But since our minor leaguers suck so bad we have no chance at getting Cabrera anyway because the Marlins do as good a job of minor league scouting as any organization save the Twins.
  25. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 03:49 PM) Why is everyone forgetting that Thome has a no trade clause? Why does eveyone forget that he waived it to win a WS ring? Something thats not going to happen in his career in Chicago.
