QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 01:43 PM) Adding Beckham and Danks to our farm system brings it back to respectability a little more. Glad to see the Sox did the right thing, went over slot, and got it done. Now let's hope Danks doesn't turn into a Sweeney or Reed type of hitter who just has no power whatsoever. He should at least make it as a 4th OF someday though. Like Brian Andersen? I hope he can be better than Andersen, but I do think this is a great start to building the minor leagues. We need a nother very solid draft next year and we could be in good shape.

does anyone have any real data on this or is this just rumor?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) Well so much for that idea... I wonder if Kenny every had a chance with Shapiro? again, I am not saying that Byrd is some big fish but he is bigger than our triple A versions. The redsox now have some depth and are making themselves stronger. This is what I was saying on the other thread, good teams, contending teams in big markets need to do these things.
-
well hopefully the redsox don't get too motivated or pumped up tonight with this news.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 03:48 PM) No fanbase trashes their minor league system, rightfully so, more than this board. Yet act shocked when KW isn't able to pull off impact trades. that is so right, I actually am the biggest trasher of our minor leagues. I personally think they all suck. that said, If there is some team that might desire a guy like fields or broadway then trade them away and get some help. otherwise you are correct. We have nothing in the pantry and hanging onto the crap we have does us no good either. I do not believe the sox are serious about building from within, hopefully that changes with this years draft.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) What choice do we have? What guys are out there that we are turning down great deals for? It doesn't really seem like we have a choice right now. Look we may not have choice your right, or maybe we do. The Dbacks got dunn not some guy from someones triple A squad. All I am saying is we are six weeks out and we are patching our team with Triple AAA type players. I do not have all the answers, but KW is a GM.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 01:28 PM) How much would you be willing to pay him FWIW Tony? Because after the Contreras injury, and if the contract is insured (which from what I've read, will be) we'll have even more $$$ to splash around. And therefore KW might try some "Andrew Jones'" type of offers, e.g a short term deal at an higher inflated price maybe? I think they go hard after Hudson. KW has mentioned him before. KW gets stuck on guys and doesn't let go. They will lose crede, and OC and pick up hudson, fields slots over to third with his crappy Batting average, and Getz and uribe fills in the infield. Now we jsut need a leadoff hitter again.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) Carrasco is a finesse pitcher. German is a power pitcher with a fastball/splitter combo. I haven't see him pitch lately, but I would guess his fastball is in the 93-94 mph range. He's the type of pitcher that you better have someone else in the pen getting loose as soon as he steps on the mound. these types of moves are not the sign of a team going all out to win this year. Its dissapointing really. Its crunch time, and we have DJ carrarsco in the middle fo the fire every fifth day? Not sure about that. They probably checked in with linebrink and he said no way I can be back in august and then made a move like this.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) That is beyond scary. I've been optimistic about this team this year, perhaps very uncharacteristically, but if Broadway gets a rotation spot, I believe the Sox chances just went significantly lower. Its a garbage move. what other suggestions do you have?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 01:23 AM) More that it seems like Crede's career could be in jeopardy, and now there's absolutely no chance the Sox will bring him back. lets worry about next ...next year. rosters change all the time. We will find another starter, and fields will either be traded or given a good shot after he plays winterball. This is not that hard to figure out. You dont know what will happen, the twins could come up with a big injury just as fast. Fields is a strikeout liability and a defensive liability but everyone on this board thinks he was somekind of all star. Well, lets hope he catches fire in the minors and we can trade him for something, otherwise it appears Ozzie has already made up his mind about him, very simular to Brian andersen.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 10:14 PM) How so? This Contreras injury really hurts this year, but it's devastating for this offseason's FA plans. fathom as I have stated in an earlier thread, there is insurance for this type of thing, his salary will be offset.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 06:44 PM) Problem is though, Contreras is on the books for $10-plus million, so adding another high priced pitcher with two already at over $10 million is probably not gonna happen. My best guess is that the Sox try to make another Floyd type move. baseball teams have insurance on players for this type of thing. Therefore if contreras goes on the 60 day insurance kicks in. That stated, nobody will help out the whitesox. your not getting anyone except crap players or garcia types.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:10 AM) Griffey Jr. will be playing CF for the White Sox, book it. sure and andersen will fill in the late innings every night. That is fine, the question is not where griffey plays but who plays first? Konerko gets DL'd, or somebody gets traded in the enxt couple of hours. I would rather have swish than Konerko. I am sorry to say I have given up on konerko.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) Ah it wouldn't be a thread without dick bringing up konerko again. And everyone, Thome and Konerko will not platoon at dh, thome hits righties and lefties better than paul. We all know Griffey isn't going to play everyday cf, so something else is going to happen. I'd look for kw to possibly flip jr to someone like the mets or az for pen help. rock seriously? If that were to happen then this trade would not have been announced. It would have been kept quiet until the second deal was done. I think there will be another deal but not involving griffey.
-
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:31 AM) Ok wow. 3 years ago this place was going nuts for us NOT getting Ken Griffey Jr. And now we have him. Right now, KW should be on the phone, doing what he can to trade Paul Konerko. Maybe the D-Backs would be desperate enough to make a move with them missing out on Teixeira, and somehow hoping they can fix his swing (because right now you'd get him for nothing). Maybe the Giants who are always desperate for bats. Swisher should move to 1B, Konerko should hit only against lefties (DH for Thome against them) and play some 1B still, while Griffey moves into CF. Richar I still have hope for, and Masset came on a bit as well this season, but with Griffey you're getting a "name" player, who will help put more butts in seats so there'll be other benefits for the move. i totally agree, this works especailly if there is something else up his sleeve which there seems to be. It will be a long afternoon.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) What the f*** does it matter to you? Ignore it if it bothers you so damn much. Let them have their fun. nice... just what I expected.
-
QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:23 AM) someone mentioned getting a jersey, you wouldn't want #49 or #37 or #73 now would you? this is a joke right? Who the hell cares? Your worried about a number?
-
QUOTE (earthshiner @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:18 AM) and 33 is taken by Vazquez who cares what number somebody has, why does this even matter?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) I agree, I'm excited also. danny richar is nothing and masset is just average. KOnerko will be DL'd and we will still get another relief pitcher. Andersen will still come in during the late innings every single game. The reason this happened is because of konerko.
-
QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) Doesn't Konerko have 10/5 rights? With that said I can't see him accepting a trade unless its to a contender. If this is done, Richard as a long man sounds good. why? DJ Carrasco is your long man, and the sox will get another Bullpen guy today.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) I think they would try and trade Konerko before Swisher yes but they will DL konerko first and trade him in the offseason. Nobody wants Konerko now.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) Danny Richar is not f***ing insignificant! yes he is he is not that great.
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:24 AM) Konerko is not washed up. I think he is still hurt and you'll see him go on the DL when this deal goes through. You don't see a drop off like this at 32. we will disagree and I am with you that he will be DL'd whether he is injured or not, eitherway, I do not think he can play at a 11million dollar high caliber level anymore.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:24 AM) This is such a strange deal. You said it. Very very strange.
-
swisher is not goign anywhere, he is under control for a few years, everyone loves the guy around the team, swisher will play first next year, when the sox give away konerko.
