Balta, FlaSoxxJim, a little help?
I wish I had brought my camera. Basically as we traveled closer to the shore we noticed many smaller objects floating in the water. When we got closer, we noticed it was as if someone had made little salt islands, slightly larger (1/2" maybe) than the birds, and floated them out there. Some strange bird religious ritual perhaps The lake and surrounding area is owned by all us citizens through the US Fish and Wildlife Service. I am going to call out to their service unit at Santa Ana this morning and see if one of their staff members can shed some light on the area.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 09:56 PM) Go ahead, rant if it makes you feel better. Do you think I LIKE contractors running off with untold $$? Do you think that that would only happen if a Republican was in the WHite House? if yuor answer is yes to either one of those, you are a bigger ass than I sometimes think you are. How about comnig up with a plan to end the war, instead of just 'leaving'? Oh wait, that would make it seem like the eeevil Republicans did something good if we actually won somethng, so we can't have that. So it doesn't matter if it's a Dem or a Rep in the White House? That we can't blame s*** on their party affiliation?

Balta, FlaSoxxJim, a little help?
Or anyone else with a little salt lake knowledge. I had never visited a salt lake before and took a beautiful fall day as an excuse to hike to La Sal del Ray. What an amazing site. What puzzled us, and I can't find information on it, was why there were so many dead birds floating on what appeared to be little salt islands. I understand the salinity would make them very bouyant, I assume that somehow this also causes the salt to form underneath and along their sides? We saw where a pipeline (about 2") is used to pump the water into holding ponds, we also saw what looked to be 24" concrete pipes randomly scattered over the site, I assumed they are relics of old projects.

For GOP only
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 07:33 PM) Tex, I agree with you that this election period is too damn long. 3 or 4 months for the primaries, then another few for the general. Why do we need more? To spend money, which is a boom to a few industries. News like this is silly. Some one that already thinks negativly about Edwards will believe this is the most important fact in the world to prove their opinion.

For GOP only
I really wish the election cycle was so short that stuff like this and Thompson not knowing some B level person quit, would not be news. When it drags on for a couple years, little stuff like this actually has time to be news.

Shame on you AT&T....
QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) They become news when it is actually news. Again, we have comments from someone extremely distressed and no attempt to contact the company to get their side of the story. Bad Journalism 101 I must have missed the part about them not trying to contact AT&T.

QUOTE(BigEdWalsh @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 11:35 AM) Burt Ward (Robin, Boy Wonder) I was walking along, minding my business When out of an orange-colored sky . . . FLASH! BAM! ALAKAZAM! Wonderful you came by Elliot Ingber of the Mothers of Invention played guitar on this record. On the flip-side "Boy Wonder, I Love You", Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl "I'm the Indian of the group" Black also played bass and drums. This thing was produced by Frank Zappa. Kinda weird. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 10:29 PM) Especially since there are no satellite dishes with a cable company! I have a cable box, and a "modem" for my cable internet/phone/tv. There are deposits on them. At what point do these customer service problems become news? When a lawsuit is filed? When someone is hurt physically? The only problem I see is we have not heard from AT&T.

Dog owners..
QUOTE(Soxy @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 07:17 PM) I rotate between Innova EVO and Eagle Pack for large breeds. They are great for my dog--EVO is nice because it has different taste varieties, red and white meat and lamb. I wonder when dogs were wild if they chose their prey based on taste? Hey, Champ what do you think of us catching a couple rabbits? Ah come on Lassie, I'm sick of rabbit, let's catch us some mice. Perhaps we have a bit of anthropomorphism at work here? BTW, I did the same thing for my dogs. With my cats, I never changed their food unless their health required it. I never had a finicky cat when I stuck to the same food all the time. My mom will keep opening cans until her cats like one. I think my mom believes the cats will starve themselves to death if she doesn't have the perfect canned meat.

I guess turn-about is fair play
I must be missing your point, it appears you are are saying If we are going to accept war, we have to accept depictions of violence in our entertainment. If we are going to accept that adults enjoy sex, that pornography is ok. A pivotal factor here that needs to be discussed is this, is mankind becoming more or less violent? Once that is secured then we can look at the effects of violent books, songs, movies, games, etc. Certainly we have developed horrific methods to kill many more people at a time. Where ancient man had to be satisfied with killing one enemy at a time, we now can wipe entire cities off the map. Where we once needed to travel thousands of miles and engage the enemy face to face, we can now press a button and kill someone thousands of miles away. But that does not answer the core question, are we more or less violent? I believe we are more violent than at anytime in the history of civilization. Perhaps there is some primal energy that is not released when we pick up our steaks at Jewel. Is depictions of violence making that worse, much research seems to agree. Before I drift to far away, I'm wondering if I am still missing you point.

It appeared as if you compared the actual war with entertainment choices. It would be possible to compare the depiction of real war and TV content. The answer then would be to limit the war coverage and perhaps not allowing younger adults and kids to view the war coverage. That is different than editoralizing on sending people off to battle. It would be very consistent to believe it is ok to send soldiers off to stop a genocide, and not allowing children to see the violence.

Marcus Giles Waived
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) I was thinking the same thing when the Pads signed him. I still wouldn't have a problem with the Sox picking him up to a one year deal worth 750K -1.5M with some incentives if he is decent and starts that he would make a bit more. He has had good years and obviously is coming off two straight down seasons but he is solid defensively and has shown if he can hit for any sort of an average that he will post good periphs (OBP and a solid OPS for a 2nd baseman). I think he'd be a good guy to help push Richar. He should be on the radar, but I think I will be sad if that's the best we come up with.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) And then telling her she was responsible for paying for it after she recieves her next bill, AND having a supervisor backing her up on it is pretty amazing. Amazing to the point of not being believable. I'm guessing there is more to the story. Those calls are taped and they can go back and listen.

Shame on you AT&T....
Actually I thought this was excellent journalism. Someone was having a problem with a major corporation. The networks could put their muscle behind the person getting screwed over. It's the classic David vs. Goliath. How many other people were spared this crap?

I wouldn't be surprised if he gave to a REP as well. It's an industry, just like a guy switching from Pepsi to Coke.

For GOP only
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) Yeah, because we all know those daily death counts just scream 'positive coverage'. Those deaths should not be covered, it makes the war look bad, and dishonors their sacrifice.

For GOP only
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 06:53 PM) You know, when I first bring up media not covering certain actions or words of Dem politicians, I get "they are local level pols" or "That is a governor, not a Senator". Now you have a national level guy in Biden, and it's "He's not a major enough player". Way to keep moving the goal posts there guys. I dno't care if he is Tancredo level in his poll numbers, he is still running for Pres, that is certainly big enough. Liberals own the media and conservatives have never figured out how to get a foothold. Thank GOD for talk radio.
