For GOP only
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 08:36 AM) Dispite your initial protests, I know you are trying to bait here. You went from talking about not happy with your governments body of work to immediately questioning why anyone would want them to do more... What kind of sense does that make? They have failed, so they should work less. Uh, ok. I think they would do better if they got their asses out of Washington and came back to see the people they are paid to represent. Not working less. I don't see where they are forced to work less. They are not required to be in Washington. That is very different than not working. The one thing they have to be in Washington for is voting on new laws, I don't think that should be a priority. Does it make sense to say, you have failed, so I want you to keep doing the same thing, only do more of it? Uh, ok. And by the way, you do realize it is an election year and of course they are going to need that time to campaign. Which is the real reason for this.

For GOP only
Bottom line, I wish they could get the sessions down to a week a month and have our elected representative, available, in their districts, the other times. Access to all, not just those that can fly to Washington. I want them in local restaurants, visiting local industry, driving the local roads. My Congressman ran a local business, people knew him. He was a member of our Manufacturing Association. He was in touch. Spending time in Washington, as part of the industry, does not assure us better government. In fact, I think it could produce worst. All they like to do in Washington is produce new laws, get them back in their District to make the government work for the people.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 08:01 AM) You find it interesting that people expect an effecient, hardworking, government for the huge salaries and benefits that we pay them? You must be the greatest boss in the world to work for. Also the correlation between size of government and work ethic is pretty much comical. They have nothing to do with each other, at all. Again, what outcomes are you looking for, something concrete. More legislation? Name something they did not accomplish that could have been accomplished if they work longer hours? When I was managing sales reps, that's what I looked for. Outcomes. In this venue, do you want a CEO whose companies shows a profit of $100,000,000 and works 30 hours or someone who leads the company to a profit of $10,000,000 in 80 hours? And the only work that counts is in Washington? Are you discounting everything they do in the District? Sorry you found my question comical. Do you equate hardworking with hours worked? That somehow a person who completes a project in 3 hours is not working as hard or efficient as someone who completes the same task in 6 hours? I hope you never manage hourly rate employees.

QUOTE(NUKE @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:12 PM) I have full internet access at a cost to me of 50 a month. There's some local here on our base who is really cleaning up from running it but I have no problem with that as it allows me to stay in touch for the same price I was paying for the net back home. This being the case, I can read any of the news websites I choose, stay up to date with sports, trade stocks.......whatever. That's a far cry from the 1st time I was over here when I was jostling to get close to the shortwave radio someone brought to listen to BBC. Any additional information beyond what civilians receive?

Those that think they should be in session more, is it because you want more government? What is it that hasn't been done, and why is it better that they be in session instead of somewhere else? I find it interesting that the small government advocates are the same ones advocating for more hours in Washington for the representatives. I am seriously not trying to bait anyone, I'm interested.

What access to information about the war do you have? For example, newspapers, tv, radio, etc.

QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 12:01 PM) Scary rumor I just heard that ARod to the Tigers might be the most likely situation of all. Boras and Leyland are very close friends. Crap. Forgot about them. Or wait a minute. Could this be a story planted by Boras to get the Sox involved in the bidding? I love Boras for this.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) No it won't. It will be because they finally (who ever it is) will do SOMETHING instead of just "waiting" for better results. That's the problem with the current ass-monkey in the White House. History will prove him right on the "war on terror" in the long run, but he has totally mismanaged the process. Don't worry, as soon as good news comes out with a Dem in the White House, both parties will be lining up at the press trucks whoring it up.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) Its not about GOP or Dem. Its about getting paid 5 times what the middle worker in getting paid in the US today, and then crying about being away from your family and working too many hours. Last I checked, Washington DC was where our governence happens, so I am not quite sure why the are surprised that they have to go there to work, otherwise why would they be complaining about something they knew full well of when they decided to run for office? Heck I am guessing most people who are making $150k + a year work a little more than 40 hours a week in the first place, so I don't get why five full days of work is such a difficult standard to uphold. It almost makes me wonder if a reason we have had such substandard governence is because our elected officials are content in working just a few days a week while jetting home for the weekend our on dimes. I see them more like outside sales reps. I guess where I am not clear is why they can not work, and if this gets them back in their Districts more, why is that a bad thing? I know we have not seen Congressman Hinojosa as much as we use to. It use to be an issue how much time these guys spend in their districts, now it has become how much time they spend away? I guess it makes sense. But let's be careful what we wish for. Do we want more government? Do we want them to pass more laws? What is it that isn't getting done and how will another day in Washington solve that rather than being back in their districts?

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) I don't believe there is any chance that he ends up with the Yankees. I say it's LA, LAA or Red Sox. I think there is always a chance with the Yankees. He was thisclose to being a Red Sox last time, I think this WS victory releives any pressure from the fans to sign him, dropping the Red Sox down, so I'd guess he'll be playing on or around LA or Chicago.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) The truth of the matter is unless a Democrat is in the White House, they CANNOT show that the war can be "won" unless THEY (the Democrats) do it, because otherwise they lose face on everything they have told us in the last two years. Then, they can basque in all the glory of the "military victory" and show they're "tough" in protecting us from all that ails us. It's pretty clever, actually to say what they are and then turn around and "fix things" when they get in (more) power. And if a Dem is in the White House and the war goes well it will be because of the stuff that Bush did, and if it goes poorly, it will be the Dem's fault and it wouldn't have happened if a Rep was elected.- For GOP only
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:47 AM) The same Democrats made a big deal back in January or December about how they weren't going to be a do-nothing Congress, and one of the things they had to show that they meant business was that they were going to hold a 5 day work week. It's actually probably helped; this Congress has already held nearly 2x as many votes as the Congress did last year. But if you're going to try to get positive press by doing the right thing in one case, you're going to get exactly the same negative press when you turn your back on that promise. results are what matters. If they can do that during a Saturday morning BBQ, I'm happy. Working 100 hour weeks doesn't mean a thing if the results are not there. So I wasn't impressed when they announced the new longer hours and I'm not too upset when they announced new shorter hours. Parkinson's Law and the Peter Principle all come into play here.- For GOP only
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) I agree, that is awfully frustrating to see. If we have turned being a house rep into a full time, job, that is fine - so I expect them to work their butts off for it. They should be honored to have such a privileged position. This reminds me a lot of how a feel about overpaid professional athletes who don't work hard at it - its insulting to those of us who pay their salaries. I'm not certain exactly what that means. If that means they are free to work in their offices, return to their districts, etc. Isn't that a good thing? I guess it is up to the individual official on how they use the Fridays. So if the GOP wants to make a point, let's see them using that day productively. I don't read anything there that would prevent them from certain activities except voting.- Athletics want out of Oakland
