Funny, we look down at Iraq for getting f***ing tough on crime, yet we really wish we could be more like them.
  2. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:28 PM) Whats the over/under on how long it take the baby to get to 1000 posts? Like daddy will let him near the computer . . .
  3. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:24 PM) In short no. I've actually heard one theory (albeit unpopular) that rape is committed for evolutionary reasons. Most psychologists (unless they've switched in the past year and a half) agree it's about power. Same reason people batter. Most of my old "rape" stuff (educational of course) is either at home or donated to my alma mater. Let me get back to you with some names after I finish my stupid poster from hell, okay? Sexual gratification never seemed to fit. Too easy to find a prostitute, and in countries which have legalized prostitution, the rape stats stayed the same. I am certain there are horny cases as well. Those are the ones that I think Nuke is mostly thinking about. Pick up a woman at the bar, you are both half smashed, she has next morning regrets and goes to the police. The underlyting premise in some of the laws, is not consistent. The victim is not responsible for their actions because they were drunk, the accused does not have that same presumption. The grab a lone jogger in the woods, and rape her, I don't see as being about sex.
  4. I think there has to be a better, more tailored, distribution. When the record companies are cut out, and the band distributes to the consumer, $.25 becomes a reality per song. And they make more, and have more control.
  5. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:18 PM) I'll need you to be more specific there. Who has done any research into this? Is there a concensus opinion on why humans rape, while there are only a few other species that do?
  6. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:15 PM) No. Im saying cases where evidence is lacking its probably a 1:1 ratio. Impossible to tell and thats why the burden of proof is on the accuser. There is always a lack of evidence as soon as the rapist admits he had sex with the woman. Even with evidence, it will come down to he said, she said. With it being as difficult as it is for a woman to report a real rape, I cannot believe there are that many false accusations.
  7. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) Come on Tex, you're a Psych major: Stimulus generalization, not just for Pavlov anymore! What are the major theories on rape?
  8. I don't think half of all reported rapes are false. Is that what you are saying Nuke? 1:1?
  9. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 12:45 PM) some people have no class My guess, in a tribute to the White Sox, the baby will be born shoeless . . . just a guess, I could be wrong.
  10. I think we were talking past each other. I doubt anyone here has anything less than total disgust for the rapists. But when we see someone who, unless drugged, make such an obviously made decision, it is worth commenting on. I recently taught a drunk driving awareness program. After completing the program, I realized something important was missing. The materials never talked about getting into a car with a drunk driver. I was amazed. I didn't believe anyone was saying it was her fault, I read people saying, why did she make such a poor choice [that poor girl]? What makes these cases the toughest is once the rapist agrees that sex occurred, but it was consensual, it becomes who do you believe. In this one, with the victim left unconscious on the side of the road, I think it will be an easy case, but in others, I would not want to be on the jury.
  11. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 12:52 PM) Move to Austin. That's a Democrat island right there. And actually Austin is a beautiful city with a great culture. And there just might be a few singles around there who aren't interested in marriage. Thank you Kap. I'm not certain if my girlfriend will go for it. Or are you confusing Soxy with me? If that's so, you've been working waaaaay tooooooo much!
  12. Traditional entertainment companies have never been able to keep up with technology and have lost their legal battles at every turn. I track this back to audio recorders. The music industry thought no one would buy albums when they could tape off the air via their radios. Then the industry fought video recorders because no one would watch commercials. And there have been many battles in between and before and after. Strip away what we know and look how simple this should be. You have an artist who is making music you have customers who want to listen to it. In the simplest form it would be artist -----> consumer But there are now billion dollar companies in the middle trying to protect their piece of the pie. artist ---> companies $$$$$ ----> consumer IMHO, nature always favors the simplest solution to a problem. Technology will drive a distribution system that will directly connect the artist, producing work with great results from home, with their audience, who will pay a small fee for each download or a smaller fee, for a per listen license. We will have music stations that do little more than search and download from various artists' web sites and play songs. Highly customizable.
  13. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:18 AM) Knowing me and knowing Texas I would say a lynch mob. Not at all, welcome to the border region. 85% Democrat. Now up by Kap, that's GOPer heaven.
  14. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 12:39 PM) Well it makes us feel safe, doesn't it to blame the victim? I'll never be that stupid, so I won't be raped. I'll never walk alone late at night so I'll never be raped. After all, good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. Isn't that the easiest way to live your life? Unless, of course, something bad's happened to you. . . I'm not saying blame the victim, I'm saying we have less sympathy for someone who was dealing drugs than someone who was sitting in their living room when they are murdered. Perhaps you are right, we do feel safer if we think, I won't be robbed if I avoid this neighborhood, or I won't get raped if I don't get drunk and lose control around strangers. From another angle, if you were teaching a class on how to protect yourself from rape, wouldn't you discuss this situation and explain the evils of getting into a van with 6 men? Clearly that is risky behavior. Does she deserve to be a victim of a crime? Of course not. Are the 6 men involved the lowest forms of human life? Absolutely. How can one fit all that together? Should her actions be discussed at all, in the context of how to avoid being a victim?
  15. half way dilated? Just like the World Series, all Mike can do is sit there and cheer and say "we" a lot
  16. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) Well, what was the FIRST comments about this? Bad girl, stupid choice. As opposed to WHAT KIND OF f***ING ASSHOLE RAPES A GIRL WITH 5 OF HIS CLOSEST FRIENDS? Essentially, focusing first on the victim's behavior reduces the accountability that we put on the perps for RAPING someone. Soxy, How much of this would you agree with? Our society always identifies with the victim and tempers their response to the victim. A couple of examples An elderly woman is home alone, someone breaks in, and murders her. A 17 year old drop out is hanging with gang members and in a drive by shooting, he is murdered. Our society has a greater moral outrage for someone who is as innocent a victim as possible. Especially someone who had not put themselves in a dangerous situation to begin with. The headline is usually about the victim. 10 year old shot on the way to School; not 23 year old shoots student. I do believe our military, like teachers, clergy, Doctors, etc. should be more trustworthy. Had these not been Marines, we wouldn't be discussing it. Somewhere in all this, I think we all can agree, we wish she had exercised better judgment. I think we all agree these men, if guilty, are despicable pigs that should be given the harshest sentence available.
  17. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 08:01 AM) That's the point. The main audio channel on the DVD would be Darkside of the moon, and if you really wanted to watch the real movie for some unknown reason, you'd select the alternative audio channel. For the people who are too stoned to synch it correctly. Brilliant! have a Guiness.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 07:39 AM) Effective immediately: 5 day suspesion for incorrect use of your, you're, there, their, they're, its, it's in SLAP. Thanks guys. I will try very hard to not get drunk on my own power. And I would like to add, in the grammatical vein, and to not risk the 5-day suspension, urine for a real treat as mod. That's the end of Jas posting. BTW, not everyone here is a guy. and with this power, you won't even get a buzz . . .
  19. QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) I see this thread as an example of immense progress. Only four dickheads (so far) thought the subject of gang rape was a good subject for a joke or a blame the victim statement. We’ve come a long way, baby. I'm hoping you miscounted, if not, you must have mis-read my post. Not to defend the Neanderthals here, but there is a statement, part way between blaming the victim and excusing bad judgment. I would not be blaming her when I say, I wish she had exercised better judgment than trusting 6 members of the US military. No one deserves to be a victim of any crime, especially rape. But I don't think any parent would suggest to their kid to jump in the van and have a good time. I'm not blaming her, but wishing she had displayed better judgment. Maybe this tragedy would have been avoided.
  20. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:38 PM) I find it funny but people who cry the most about security lines at the airport are typically the same ones who arrive at the airport right about the time their flight starts boarding. Like the one knucklehead in the Tucson Airport I ran into when I flew to Washington last month. He comes running up to the checkpoint line all in a huff saying "I cant believe this!!" I asked him what time his flight left and he goes "in 30 minutes". It took all the patience I could muster to keep from yelling out "DUMBASS!" right there in front of everyone. I was thisclose to missing a connecting in Dallas last month. Damn travel agent only gave me 47 minutes between flights and I was transfering between American and Delta. Had to go the length of one terminal, grab a shuttle bus, and get over to the other.
