  1. One of the first things I learned as Editor of my college paper was all campaign ads are cash in advance. No money, no ad.
  2. I was reading some of the coverage about the coverage and was surprised to learn that news organizations have been renting rooftop space near the Vatican for years in anticipation of this story. I know they prepare obits and make plans for world leaders deaths, so they can be prepared, but even remembering to rent locations for years in advance was surprising to me.

  4. I'm not saying he's innocent. Just talking about the testing process. I would like to know what the testing procedures are. If there is a second test conducted at a different lab and how accurate the tests are. Nothing is 100% accurate. 99.9 means one in a thousand will be wrong. Either a false negative or a false positive. Isn't it poppy seeds that can trigger a false positive on some drug tests? This also highlights how these guys have to be careful with over the counter typoes of stuff. I imagine some of these drugs are trying to mimick the real deal stuff, perhaps they come close enough to trigger a false reading.

  7. Vietnam was more costly in lives lost and changed forever, Iraq will be more costly in dollars. That is the changing face of war. High tech is replacing a soldier on the ground anywhere they can. Another issue is the moral obligation we feel to re-build Iraq, something we did not have with Vietnam. It appears as if our leaders have voted an unlimited budget for these purposes.

  10. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 06:05 PM) Did our nation go "bankrupt" after Korea, Vietnam, or the Persian Gulf War? Why would it happen now? Because our politicians no longer have the courage to raise taxes to pay for wars. Instead they continue to increase our national debt and stay in power. Republicans use to be for fiscal responsibility and painted Democrats as "tax and spend". Now the Republicans have become the "spend and don't tax" party. They keep telling us someone else will be paying for this stuff tomorrow that they are giving us today. Who can say no to a free lunch?

  12. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 01:24 PM) Sorry, I can't read your mind. Point taken. I seem to remember you complaining that the American policy towards Mexican "visitors" is discriminatory because Mexicans typically can't afford to apply for visas, but perhaps I took that out of context. The point about Mexican tourists was the ones that can afford the proper Mexican paperwork (which is the biggest expense, not what the US charges) are not looking for safe houses and places to hide. They own about 3 out of 4 businesses along the Texas-Mexico border so they do not need jobs. There are so many legal to be here Mexicans on the border that are being harassed by vigilantes who do not have the training that our law enforcement agencies have. The Border Patrol is complaining about all these calls to check out legal citizens are taking away from their efforts to stop drugs and illegals from entering. Imagine a neighborhood watch in Chicago which calls in reports of every black person they see. Yes, Iraq under Hussein used the death penalty. Interesting that among civilized countries we are in the minority using the death penalty. Most countries find us barbaric in that regard. We found someone even more extreme than us. So . . . Any government which kills more people or for less of a reason is evil and anyone who uses the death penalty less than us or not at all, is a weak liberal country. I do not believe any country has a moral obligation to bankrupt their nation to save another. The most absurd part of the Iraq War is that we are borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Much of this money is coming from countries which refused to join us in Iraq. :headshake We now know our intelligence was wrong about other things, could it be that Iraq was not executing or torturing as many people as our government claimed?
  13. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 10:29 AM) That's an interesting comment coming from someone who spends so much time here defending the rights of Mexicans. What about all of the Iraqis that Saddam slaughtered over the years? What about the Kurds and Shiites that he gassed? What about all of the people who were arrested, tortured, and murdered by Saddam's secret police? What about all of the brutality and murders committed by his sons? Are you suggesting that American lives are worth more than Iraqi lives? Surely you don't believe that they're "just brown people" who don't have the same right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that we do? I didn't expect an answer. And BTW, read closely. I am defending the rights of Mexican AMERICANS to not be harassed by other Americans.
  14. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 10:10 AM) From what I understand, Iraq themselves went out of their way to mislead not only their own people, but also parts of their military. On occasion, even Saddam was lied to by his sons, telling him they had a level of preparedness that wasn't true. So if they don't know or lie to appear stonger, how are we supposed to be accurate? This just doesn't come as a surprise to me. Did we not expect him to lie? I believe our intelligence agencies are suppose to verify and look past the public statements. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 08:10 AM) Despite the apparent flaws in our intelligence, the world is a much better place with Saddam behind bars and his sons out of the picture. Nobody deserves to live under a regime of terror like that. Would you have given your life to make that happen? How many American lives is a fair price to make that happen? 10? 100? 1,000? 100,000?
  15. QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) Maybe her own brother should have thought about that before he started a fight IN the hospis with the cops. You will defend the guy until the end. How about Terri's sister, what did she do to get banned from the bedside besides wanting Terri to live? Michael showed no mercy until the end. And Nuke, these are the types of moments that change America. Why are we not at every bedside? Because by drawing attention here, millions of Americans have written living wills, they have opened dialogs with their families and spouses concerning their last requests. There have been these bedside vigils, but none have an ex-spouse inflicting his will against the Governor, US legislature, and even the President of the US. Ironic you quoted material that mentions not being able to afford medical care. Protesters are trying to save those people who die because they cannot afford surgery or even insurance. They are called Democrats who fight for single payer health insurance or universal coverage. I believe it is the GOP that blocks that one. But you probably do not see the problem, you already have a government supplied health care program. I hope in the circumstances surrounding your death, people can find the same laughter you've found in the circumstances surrounding Terri's death. It's a gift that should keep on giving.
  16. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 12:03 AM) As is typically the case with these guys little details like that which make a big difference get left out. They want it to sound like they are going door to door rousting mexicans at random. :rolly City folks. I go backpacking and take my Boy Scouts into those areas. People actually use the wilderness for recreation. We camp, explore, and enjoy God's creation. Great information on wilderness travel Big Bend National Park Big Bend sits directly on the Rio Grande. The Chisos Mountains are some of the most beautiful areas anywhere. The surrounding desert areas are alive with some really cool reptiles, flora, fauna, and relics. Amazing place. We've also be invited to explore many of the ranches, Fish and Wildlife areas, and Nature Conservancy sites in that area. Sorry, no electricity, no cell coverage, no TV signal, no Internet, no Starbucks so y'all probably don't think people can live there. So Nuke, who is overlooking some facts? I've walked those areas that to y'all are some abstract concept. And was not capitalizing the M in Mexicans a deliberate insult or a Freudian slip? As far as targeting, I am pointing out that LAW ENFORCEMENT is trained and knows all the nuances of our immigration laws, these guys do not.
  17. Thank God Michael had his attorney with him, in the room, when Terri passed. I am certain she would have preferred to be surrounded by Michael and his attorney, instead of her brother and sister. It just is too sad that Michael couldn't be surrounded by his current spouse and their children in his time of sorrow.

    The Pope...

He never put down the cross. I hope when it is my time I can live my end days with the same quiet dignity, not whimpering and fearful like, well like I think I will be. All the coverage is so difficult. The message from Vatican City is somber and peaceful, the reporting is just so sad. The images from his 1979 trip to the Midwest and millions of people coming out to see him, always touch me. I'm getting out of here for a couple days. Peace.

    Kerry Wood

A lot of people are talking about his mechanics. It seems like he's stuck for 2005 and should ignore all that garbage and just go out and pitch and look to make any adjustments during the next off season.
  21. I'm down in Texas and get a large dose of Astros koolaide drinking commentators, and of course have an allegiance to Chicago, but I really see St. Louis winning the division. It is exciting to hear people picking the Cubs.
  22. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 06:53 AM) Actually we just upgraded the server, etc. with this kind of thing in mind. We wanted to broaden the site and reach out to Chicago baseball fans. What I think would work even better is to create a forum just for Cubs fans. Kind of like we broke off the minor league stuff (not calling the Cubs minor league)
