  1. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 12:17 PM) As I understood the article, the only people confused were Mexican Law Enforcement agents. It's not a question of whether Border Patrols agents are doing their job, while there may be merit in that assumption, but the low amount of agents employed to guard 1,000 miles of Mexican/American border. Honestly, who cares what these Border Patrolmen believe of Minutemen. If my town felt police were not fulfillihg their duties, and formed a subsequent watch-group, I'd expect our force to feel insulted. As many of these Patrol agents likely feel. Ultimately, if progress is made in curbing illegal immigration, which statistics will either validate or disapprove, then their work is justified. BTW, here's an article posted in the Sun-Times. http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-border04.html If vigilantes are making the job more difficult for the Border Patrol, we should all care. They are already understaffed to stop drugs, guns, and other illegal stuff. To be spending time investigating Mexican-Americans would not be wise. To spark an international incident by getting into a shooting match with Mexican officials would not be helpful. Professionals with training confuse the border, vigilantes from California can do better? I am certain that if vigilantes patrolled Schaumburg they could help tip police to many crimes. They could follow people on their way home to make certain they aren't drunk, they could park outside your house and make certain that the person in the backyard isn't trying to rob the place. There is plenty of crime in all areas, we need more armed vigilantes in all neighborhoods, not just on the border.
  2. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 12:10 PM) Interesting. I thought that the Vatican would have final say, as the funeral really has nothing to do with the White House. My guess is the Vatican doesn't have the resources to check who should be attending from every country. So maybe they make X numbers of invites available to each country?? I am assuming the US Government will tell the Vatican who will be representing the US along with Dubya.

  4. I am a little suprised that Illini are dogs for this one. I was pulling for an All Big 10 Championship, but it still is shaping up to be a great game.
  5. QUOTE(knightni @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 11:52 AM) Is it the black box? Yes. I really fits my mood the past few days.
  6. QUOTE(knightni @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 11:45 AM) Tex, what's in your avatar? I only see a black box. it's a black box.
  7. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 24, 2005 -> 12:06 AM) OK, let's have y'alls favorite Dylan lyric: For sure, my #1 is from Tangled Up in Blue: She was married when we first met, soon to be divorced. Helped her out of a jam I guess, but I used a little too much force Damn Jim, I'm hooked on Tangled up in Blue. It is now my favorite Dylan tune.

    Home Security

    I am reviewing a business plan and one of the numbers jumped out at me. Down here damn near every new home has an electronic security system installed. I take them for granted. It seems that the upper Midwest has a very small install base and when I need Midwest data, who better than soxtalk? Note: No actual investing should be done based on these results. Past performance does not guarantee future performance. All investing involves risk and a possible loss of capitol.
  9. I was reading that the White House was finalizing the list of governement officials who would be attending the Pope's funeral and it was mentioned they were not certain of ex-Pres Clinton and Bush's attendance and it sounded like the WH has the call. Can the White House control the Ex-President's schedules and what events they attend? Could Bush forbid his Dad from attending?
  10. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:11 AM) Interesting, I see at least a few of us think Boston is in for a doozie of a season. Personally I think they will struggle without Lowe and Pedro. They meant a lot to the team, mainly Pedro. Lowe pretty much blew last year for them, but he was good in the playoffs. I think the BoSox are overrated this year. All they did was cut their already huge advantage. Still one of the top 3 teams in the AL. Same with the Yankees. They could lose three starters and still be a favorite to make the playoffs.
  11. Hmm, Border Patrol Agents and Mexican Law enforcement get confused as to where the border is. No place for amateurs. Nuke, how helpful would vigilantes be to your efforts as a soldier? Think Border Patrol wants that same help?

  13. Four lawyers in a law firm lived and died for their Saturday morning round of golf. It was their favorite moment of the week. Then one of the lawyers was transferred to an office in another city. It wasn't quite the same without him. A new woman lawyer joined their law firm. One day she overheard the remaining three talking about their golf round at the coffee table. Curious, she spoke up, "You know, I used to play on my golf team in college and I was pretty good. Would you mind if I joined you next week?" The three lawyers looked at each other. They were hesitant. Not one of them wanted to say 'yes', but she had them on the spot. Finally one man said it would be okay, but they would be starting pretty early at 6:30 am. He figured the early Tee-Time would discourage her immediately. The woman said this might be a problem and asked if she could possibly be up to 15 minutes late. They rolled their eyes but said this would be okay. She smiled and said, "Good, then I'll be there either at 6:30 or 6:45." She showed up right at 6:30 and wound up beating all three of them with an eye-opening 2-under par round. She was a fun and pleasant person the entire round. The guys were impressed! Back in the clubhouse they congratulated her and happily invited her back the next week! She smiled and said "Sure, I'll be here at 6:30 or 6:45 ." The next week she again showed up at 6:30 Saturday morning. Only this time, she played left-handed. The three lawyers were incredulous as she still managed to beat them with an even par round despite playing with her off-hand. By now the guys were totally amazed, but wondered if she was just trying to make them look bad by beating them left-handed. They couldn't figure her out. She was again very pleasant and didn't seem to be showing them up, but each man began to harbor a burning desire to beat her! In the third week they all had their game faces on. But this week she was 15 minutes late! This had the guys irritable because each was determined to play the best round of golf of his life to beat her. As they waited for her, they figured her late arrival was some petty gamesmanship on her part. Finally she showed up. This week the lady lawyer played right-handed which was a good thing since she narrowly beat all three of them. However she was so gracious and so complimentary of their strong play, it was hard to keep a grudge against her. This woman was a riddle no one could figure out! Back in the clubhouse she had all three guys shaking their heads at her ability. They had a couple beers after their round which helped the conversation loosen up. Finally one of the men could contain his curiosity no longer. He asked her point blank, "How do you decide if you're going to golf right-handed or left-handed?" The lady blushed and grinned. She said, "That's easy. When my dad taught me to play golf, I learned I was ambidextrous. I have always had fun switching back and forth. Then when I met my husband in college and got married, I discovered he always sleeps in the nude. From then on I developed a silly habit. Right before I left in the morning for golf practice, I would pull the covers off him. If his you-know-what was pointing to the right, I golfed right-handed; if it was pointed to the left, I golfed left-handed. All the girls on the team thought this was hysterical." Astonished at this bizarre information, one of the guys shot back, "But what if it's pointed straight up in the air?" She said, "Then I'm fifteen minutes late.
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 09:32 AM) Hearing his son say that was worth more than any $$$ he could have received. The man made the right choice, and is a great role model for his son. Here's to him. No sweeter words could be spoken.
  15. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 09:23 AM) I are smart!
  16. I'll bet Clinton paid all his hotel bills in cash keeps the little lady from catching him when the credit card bills come in.
  17. This reminds me of that scene in Back to School where Rodney Dangerfield had Kurt Vonnegut write a paper about one of Vonnegut's own works and received a "C" because, according to the Professor, the student knew nothing about Vonnegut.
  18. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 07:53 AM) They are now talking about postponing the wedding according to NPR this morning. Of course DJ would have the latest news. Chuck is moving the wedding date.

  20. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 08:47 AM) Staying close to the beer! Do you think they are drinking Corona and limes? One very good thing about having the vigilantes out there, is if they stay long enough, they will save lives. The Border Patrol checks out every instance of ciculating buzzards. All too often it is a person who didn't make it. I also hope this helps increase the Border Patrol's budget. Right now they have to place much of their resources on stopping drugs, guns, and other contraband and don't have a lot of extra fund to chase illegals. I would hate for agents to be taken off of drug smuggling and placed on chasing down leads of every Mexican-American on the border.
  21. There are people who read a book and think they have it all figured out. Sometimes their mistakes are so spectacular they become famous. About a year ago a guy was hiking alone and got pinned by a boulder. He hacked off his own arm to escape. He wrote a book and was hailed as some brave guy. My Scouts just laughed at the guy. Step one to keeping your ass alive in the wilderness. Have a buddy with. Step two, if you do not have a buddy, tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. I'm just guessing here, but I'll bet this guy had a GPS with him but couldn't read a map. He also pushed the panic button pretty quick. If he was planning on hiking the trail, he would have had provisions for a couple weeks at least. He would have cached food along the way, or arranged food drops to general delivery at a post office. Find a backdrop to hike to, heading north and then follow that feature back to the trail. Another likely guess is, on day one, he realized that 2,600 miles is a long way and gave up.
  22. I guess they aren't sticking to those wilderness areas. Easier to just hang around town.
  23. What a fool. If he can't read a map and use a compass, he shouldn't be out there. That is a fairly well maintained and marked trail. He obviously hadn't done his pre-trip planing.
