There is a delay between when you consume the drink and it "hits your system". What seems to have happened in this case is he drank a six pack in less than an hour, on an empty stomache. All those hit at the same time. IIRC the human body processes about a shot of liquor per hour. In theory, for most humans, drinking one drink per hour would not get you drunk. One drink and inning, when Burhle is pitching, will have you drunk by the bottom of the fourth. I am certain some of you remember the fun days in the late 70s when Illinois' drinking age was 21 and Wisconsin was 18. Long drives to the border were common and I am certain scary for parents. It's the same here, only the kids are heading to Mexico. Up until a car load of teenagers were killed, Customs and the Border Patrol were not allowed to detain anyone for drunk driving. These kids came through, slurring that they were all US citizens returning from Mexico and were dead 15 minutes later. The laws were then changed.
  2. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 10:32 PM) My new cat. She's cute, although, the name will obviously be changed. I do not believe in owning pets named precious. It was a toss up between a cat and a dog--but the cuteness of this cat, and the fact that cats are cheaper persuaded me to pick her up. She's adorable and I'm bringing her home tomorrow. Hurray!!!!! I think you should narrow the choices to three and let us vote
  3. I went 20 different ways in this and allow me to summarize. Immigration is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. For over a hundred years we have turned a blind eye to the issue because we benefited. I don't have a problem with documenting every worker and visitor to this country. I personally feel we have more to fear from a guy in a nice suit stepping off a plane then Juan with everything he owns on his back, carrying two milk jugs of water, across the desert. I do not understand placing a bunch of resources trying to stop Juan and allowing terrorists with money to waltz in on tourist VISAs, Student VISAs, etc. Do we honestly believe a major terrorist plot begins with "cross just north of Del Rio, walking 55 miles across the desert avoiding the vigilantes, . . . The reason our elected officials have not done anything is they understand how critical these laborers are to our agriculture economy and how important agriculture is to our National Defense. This is a huge agricultural area, and everyone I know in the industry tells me that cannot hire enough legal Americans for the harvest and packing season. The work is about 7-8 months long and ranges from onions to watermelons. The first step in solving the problem is to admit we need these workers and have been exploiting these workers. That's a tough pill to swallow for any President, Senator, Congressman, or State official. Imagine the two choices. 1. Elected Official Press Announcement "This policy will eliminate illegals from our shores and will "created" hundreds of thousands of nomad, seasonal, minimum wage jobs. Please head up to Idaho and start picking potatoes for the next 5 weeks, we also need some people for 6 weeks in Florida picking and packing tomatoes, when you finish there, you will be needed in Georgia for 3 weeks picking and packing peaches. This is the greatest employment bill this country has ever seen. Wow creating minimum wage, manual labor, seasonal jobs. That's exactly what gets the voters pulses racing. Especially when the next article over talks about another manufacturing plant moving to China. 2. Next options an elected official announcing we need these workers, agriculture cannot work without them. Another soon to be voted out public official. Another interesting point. We make it easier to come here and take a $50,000 per year programming job than a $12,000 per year laborer job. Does that make sense to anyone? The software industry fills their allotment of H1B VISA each year and begs the government to hire more. Claiming there are not enough software writers available in the US. At the same time unemployment in Austin in the tech sector is over 15% with guys very willing to relocate. Unlike illegals coming in from other parts of the globe, Mexicans , for the most part, return to Mexico with their pay, at the end of the season. Tensions are high on the border. Vigilantes are outside the law, are not trained, no screening. I've read their web sites and they are filled with hate wrapped up in an American flag. Let's not make these guys the poster children for border security. Let's come up with a program that doesn't cut off our nose to spite our face. Recognize the valuable contribution that guest farm labor provides this country, figure out a way to harness that, while helping to insure that someone out to hurt us doesn't slip through.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 06:03 AM) I have to admit that Jesse Jackson totally shocked me by not following the liberal throngs. He actually has an occasional independant thought. I'm thoroughly impressed. I believe that is the *Reverend* Jesse Jackson and I know a lot of Dems that are behind the parents. Plus, I haven't seen too many major Dems exactly fighting for the husband. I still don't see this as a left v. right issue. The biggest right wing nut job Nuke didn't care one way or another. This progressive nut job is siding with Hannity. So go figure. I would have been shocked if Jackson had come out in favor of keeping the feeding tube out.
  6. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 10:10 PM) You dispute that number? California alone spends something like 2 BILLION dollars on all manner of services for these people when they dont belong here in the first place. I also dont see the relevance in the visa laws in relation to this issue. The people running across the southern border are not headed for Lake Havasau or Vegas to spend a weekend in a hotel living it up. To assert that illegal immigration saves us money is ludicrous. Even you should be able to see that we can't have thousands of people crossing illegally every day. HELL even LCR sees that! You want our food produced here thats fine. There has to be some control though and a guest worker program, where we can at least screen who gets in and who doesn't, is the right answer there. People crossing willy nilly with no controls is a grave security risk and it is one that gets worse every year because of people just like you. Even LCR! I'll bet he appreciates the compliment. I am not avocating allowing free access. What I am saying is if you waved a magic wand and removed all the illegals, our economy collapses. Maybe your job doesn't resuire training, but every Border Patrol Agent I've talked with hates these guys. They judge everyone as guilty until proven innocent and each Agent believes bloodshed is going to happen. The Agents run special operations along the river and worry that some vigilante is going to get in the middle and start shooting. I guess no one wants to try and answer why a Doctor and his familty from Canada can spend 6 months out of the year vacationing in America but a Mexican Doctor and his family can only spend 3 months. Could it be we are treating LAW ABIDING Mexicans worse than Canadians? I'm certain the color of their skin has nothing to do with it. This effects my local economy greatly. Wealthy Mexican families love to come to McAllen, South Padre Island, San Antonio, and other cities and tourism spots. Yet they are limited far greater than tourist from Canada. QP, most of those million dollar condos you passed on South Padre Isand are owned by Mexican Nationals. They are a huge contributor to the border economy. They are harrased by these vigilantes who see themselves as some modern day Rambo. I believe to patrol our borders takes some training and knowledge of our immigration laws.
  7. There was a Law and Order where a defense attorney was representing himself and he gave a great closing argument, that changed my mind about defense attorneys. Our system is based on reasonable doubt. Our system, better than anywhere else in the world keeps innocent people out of jail. When someone is convicted, we know beyond a reasonable doubt that they are guilty. Aren't we fighting a war in part because innocent people were being put into jails? We sleep better knowing that guys like Johnny Cochran and his ilk are protecting not only their clients, but all of us. By making our law enforcement work within the laws, we all are better off. It is sickening when a guilty person gets away with murder, even worse when an innocent person is locked up for 20 years and later exonerated. I love this country and this legal system.
  8. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 09:39 PM) Every time someone tries to do something about this your ilk labels them as racists and the screaming gets so loud that they back down. Blame yourself. your ilk?? Learn a little about our agriculture before smarting off. Our f***ing economy collapses without migrant workers. What have we become when US CITIZENS have to be subjected to harassment by vigilantes who are questioning every MEXICAN -AMERICAN they see? They have no training and declare every Mexican they meet as illegals. Nice that you defend freedom, too bad it doesn't extend to MEXICAN AMERICANS who you seem to think should all be suspected of being illegals. And read through the Congressional Medal of Honor winners. A lot of Mexicans are represented, some where not even citizens when they enlisted. And even after being wounded or killed, this country still will not grant them citizenship.
  9. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 09:36 PM) Illegal immigration is costing us BILLIONS of dollars a year. What's your point? That even in LEGAL entry into the US we have different laws for Mexicans and Canadians. That in addition to the BILLIONS of dollars that illegal immigration costs us (and I dispute that number) we are costing ourselves BILLIONS of LEGAL, TOURISM dollars as well. LEGAL tourists from Canada (where the terrorists came through) are allowed more TOURISM days to spend money than Mexicans. This is LEGAL tourism. What's the point in restricting Mexicans more than Canadians in LEGAL TOURISM? Illegal immigration is saving us BILLIONS of dollars a year. What does having our food produced overseas do to our national security?

There was a companion piece in the paper that interviewed the mom. OMG, it is the most heartbreaking thing I have ever read. She lost 4 of her children. I know someone who was close to this and the driver really had no idea what happened until later. His remorse was severe and genuine, but I am certain not enough for the parents. Ana Verley the local MADD head is a friend of mine, her son is one of my Scouts, and she sees so much of this. I am amazed she can be so nice and upbeat. There is a picture of the van with her babies Easter dress laying on the back seat. Today is my daughter's 14th birthday, she's presiding over thye National Juniior Honor Society inductions at her school. As I see her getting ready, I think what a single careless, or worse, driver could do to my life.

  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:19 PM) How much can they produce? The scale that the US produces on is unmatched in the world. I doubt they would be able to pick up THAT much of the slack as to keep price increases that low. Not many countries have the wide open expanses AND the technology to utilize it, like the US does. I think we are talking about two different increases. I'm talking about the total food bill increase, not the increase on individual items. I think that is probably the difference. Individual crops that require much hand cultivating, and harvesting would go up a lot. We would not see double digit increases in crops that lend themselves to mechanical processes. Farming is an amazingly simple process. We have produced so much based largely on economics. We were the largest car manufacturer. The largest TV manufacturer. Keep going down the list of industries that have gone away. We already are importing an insane amount of food, what's a few trillion pounds more? It wouldn't happen over night, but it would. People already pass over the expensive vine ripened tomatoes (GOP spelling) for the symmetrical and flat tasting cheaper varieties.
  22. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) This sounds like a dumb question, but I have an old fossil watch that has gone dead and I need to change the battery. I was talking to Krush and he said I should "soxtalk it" so here I am. Any advice on how to change the battery? Go to a watch place and smooze the girl behind the counter or Gently pry open the back and see which battery it requries. (Check to see if your style is held together by a screw). Either make two trips to Walgreens for the replacement battery or write down the model number. Gently pry the clip that is probably holding the battery in place. Be certain the battery is orientated correctly (Positive up or down depending on model). Fossil will do this for $15 and 4 weeks by sending it to their repair facility.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:01 PM) Economically something would have to give way. If wages went from way less than minimum wage, to say $10 an hour, the costs have to be absorbed somewhere. Either prices have to go up, or farmers would quit producing. If farmers were to quit producing prices would go up anyway, as there would be no change in basic demand. Food is an inelastic item in general. You HAVE to eat. Price increases would be passed on. Heck if wages went up 4X, we would probably be lucky to only see a 2X increase in prices. Like all other manufacturing jobs, we would go overseas. Like shirts, tvs, computers and everything else, foreign production is cheaper and when US producers cannot compete we will see more and more food items from places like Nicaragua.
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 01:53 PM) You believe that everyone could afford to pay double for the same amount of food? Most estimates are in the 10-20% range, the prediction is we would start importing more food from Mexico and South America where the labor would be cheaper. Some rural farmers would go bankrupt, others would see homes being build on their land. Americans have never shown a willingness to spend more money for Made in America. We recently relaxed our laws to allow ground beef into this country. Thank you fast food burgers. BTW, my favorite fast food burger only uses 100% American raised beef. What-A-Burger We think dependency on foreign oil is problematic, imagine dependency on Argentina and El Salvador for our food?
  25. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 01:40 PM) I doubt the industry could support $10.50 an hour for a prevailing wage. But definately something needs to be done. Exactly my point. To get Americans to take the jobs, would require those kind of wages. Which is why this is a difficult problem to solve. These are third world jobs that our economy has passed over. It is manual labor in the simplest form. Nomadic. Why would someone do that when McDonalds and WalMart are hiring? Add up the costs to live on the road for a week. Where would you stay? $40 per night for a hotel room? Split 4 ways, is $1.50 per day per person. How about food, when you have no real home? Another $10 per day? Clothes, Gas, savings for the winter, etc.
