Would it be hourly pay or a stipend for the season? Would Mel Kiper have a list of the best pay checks for student athletes? Would players be required to attend classes? Could the University offer payments or a scholarship not always both?

That thread is still going and it is funny. I was thinking "insider" there sounds a lot like "soxfeelgoodonmyfeet" here. It has got to be the same kid.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 06:19 PM) I don't know if you are serious or not, but I think this is a great idea. Why should an institution of higher learning exploit athletes for a purpose that has nothing to do with higher learning. Do you think anyone would know who Miami, Nebraska, Florida State etc were if it wasn't for football? Are the players going there for the education? Hell no. Should there be a salary cap, some sort of a revenue sharing to keep a level playing field? Should each conference have a different plan? Should players be guaranteed 4 year contracts or year by year? Would the money be limited like the number of scholarships?

QUOTE(Hall of Famer @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) Ahh, you can never have enough poor, slow defensive rightfielders. Right field race? Forget the stop watch, being a calendar. It looks like a couple guys are going to be logging some serious sub time if things do not change. Like most teams, we are thin in spots. A couple injuries and it's 2004 Part 2

Opening Pandora's Box. Would every varsity athlete receive the same pay? Regardless of sport, regardless of skill? QBs get $1,500 per semester, tennis players $150? Would colleges be allowed to set their own wage scale? Perhaps Oklahoma is offering $1,000 per semester and Michigan only $750. If a kid is injured does he lose his pay? If you think the system is messed up now, wait until this is implimented. The current rules are too strict and non sensical. If you are on a band scholarship and want to play in a wedding band for pay, no problem, keep the pay and the scholarship. If you are a varsity golfer and want to work at a golf course for spending money, you lose. There are problems, but it could be a lot worse.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) It would be hard to argue against Clemens numbers, but who is Clemens going to compare himself to to justify that kind of money. None of the games top pitchers are making anywhere close to $22 mil If the Astros number is 49.9% correct and his is 50.1% correct he gets the dough. That's what I love about this process. Usually it's so close that really who cares? Now it this huge spread with each side taking poor positions. It is perhaps the biggest flaw in the player's contract. All or nothing, pick a number. Either side would win with a number between $15mil and $20mi. Instead they are both out of the range. From a PR standpoint, I'd rather be the Astros.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 12:21 PM) I can seeGarland saying at a press conference after a horrible outing "Well if you compare it to the fifth starters of the past, it's not that bad of an outing. Plus if Podsednik had a 67 inch vertical, he could have caught that grand slam in the 3rd inning." Garland should stay in the fifth starter's spot all season long. If that means that off days cause someone to miss a start, I don't agree with that on 1/19/05. That could change, but I would rest our #3 or #4 before Garland. Which I guess by definition makes Garland a 3-4

That movie could go in two directions. As a poorly produced snuff film, I would be very sickened and pissed if I was the Bridge Commission that was duped. As a real look at suicide and what drove these people to jump from that bridge, it could be a powerful tool. I would not watch the first film, I would the second. How they handle the footage of the jumpers would tell me a lot. I wonder how many more would have jumped if they knew a suicide film was being shot?

That's the beauty of the internet. Plenty of real estate and plenty of sites for everyone. If a person can't find a site that reflects their views, they aren't trying too hard. This one is what it is and it seems to be working for most people. What do you miss most about College Station?

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 10:27 AM) I won't say much on this topic because if I start, I may never shut up. What I would like is for customers to quit f***ing asking me if I am in tech support when I answer the damn phone!!! They don't ask my coworker (guy) that. It isn't just male customers, female customers ask the same damn thing after I spew out my initial greeting. (I work for a resistor manufacturer.) Wait, Honey, I thought you were the real guy's secretary. I kid because I care*® * used by permission

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 10:57 AM) Make Girland the #5 guy, without the pressure he turns around and wins 18. I don't think there is any more or any less pressure on Garland from #3, #4, or #5. He walks out of the dugout and takes the mound, he's got to pitch.

My favorite accident was at a Bulls game with that stupid spin around with your head on a pole and try and make a basket promo way back when. The guy sped around the circle, grabbed the ball, took two steps, and hurled his nachos. Paint him the loser.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) I read this on the NYC version of the CTA Tattler. Wino are you in New York City???? Frantic hipster: Please tell me you have The Golden Girls on DVD! Employee: Nope, we are all sold out. Frantic hipster: Dammit! It's sold out everywhere! What am I going to do? --Barnes & Noble, Chelsea DJ??? I thought you already bough a copy and a back up copy. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 09:24 AM) IIRC, there was something that happened when they switched from one board to another. They had something like 128 members at the time and the order of members reversed. So #1 was now #128, #2 was #127... #128 was #1. That must be it because

Let me toss this out for consideration, not necessarily my view. On some subconscious or cellular level we believe females are the key to our survival. Lots of females and a few males will perpetuate the species better than lots of males and a couple females. We also are imprinted with a belief that females are the nurturers, and care givers. To survive and thrive like the animals we are, we subconsciously push females into that role and the males into the hunter gatherer, protector roles. Perhaps in it in our genetic makeup. On an intellectual level we are able to see past this view, but instinctively we are not.

At this point it's read it and weep time until the mid season point. I'd be surprised if we pick up a starter at this point. -
