When a school lesson goes bad
We discusssed swear filters. I am focusing on blogs. They will be following one of their choice and writing one. My problem is finding a blog site that is free, accessable (damn firewall), and portable. I don't want them to lose access after the course ends. If I use my course Moodle, outsiders can not read and I want them to share with the rest of the world.

Who will reach 100,000 posts first?

When a school lesson goes bad
I am doing a lesson on forums, wikis, and blogs for my 8th grade students and need to show them an example of a forum, Doh, I pick this one because I know it so well. "Then I hear myself say, topics are aranged in order of the most recent to the oldest. You see here that justBLAZE replied three minutes ago." "Sir, what does justBlaze mean?" avoiding the answer "these are pseudonyms, or made up names, you would have to ask him" "Sir, I know!" moving on . . . "Wait, what does 'I am drunk in 2013' mean?" oops Of course I also forgot to turn off avatars and sigs

One of the best written posts I've read in a while. Sure beats three pages of "witty one-liners" and insults.

The Wussification of America
I'll take a stab at a more thought out and serious post and watch the points get misconstrued, twisted, and lost "Wussification" would indicated American society is becoming less violent, less physical. I'm not certain that is true. Road rage, serial killings, and overall violence all seem to be increasing, not decreasing. Now, some may see any attempt to stop that (watching how children play, well regulating guns, etc) as unnecessary or a bad thing. damn gotta go before I finish. Here's the start
-
The Wussification of America
I guess to avoid this wussification we need more duels in the streets! We need more shootouts between neighbors. Once again some of the Republicans on the board want to return to days gone by. Gun slingers, no gay people, minorities out of sight and out of mind, women at home having babies, wearing a dress and cookin' dinner. They believe in evolution on everything except civilization. To prove I'm not a wuss I'll kick anyone's ass who dares to challenge me! Again I ask, what does well regulated mean? I thought it may have something to do with having regulations on arms.

The Wussification of America
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 08:59 AM) Haha so they've got from "doom-rifles equipped with detachable assault clips with baby-seeking high velocity military grade death-bullets" to "Wal-Mart rifles". Funny how the facts change. In any case, there's a lot of M14's lying around in this country, which up until like 18 months ago was the standard marksmanship rifle for the USMC. The new one (M25) is still on the M14 platform. That gun does not mess around, and you can (or could) buy one for $1500. Its just as lethal as almost any rifle in service around the world. Whatever, that wasn't your point. Unless the government plans on just wasting every American citizen and having no country left, they'll have to be selective about who they fight. They'll have to visually confirm a threat, they'll have to figure out who's an enemy and who's not. A-10's and drones really cant do that, because the only way you know about the insurgents is when they're shooting at you. The government better make a really good point to feed people, or they'll go from having a small percentage of the population revolting to everyone taking up arms overnight. Besides, I have the skills to survive in the woods with a .22lr and a hatchet for like a week at a time and do alright. Most people do too, even if they dont know it. Duke, did you see the part where I wrote "another country"? It seems like you are replying that it is the US government. And OK, after they have wiped out our trained military from around the globe, are they really going to be worried about the citizens and their weapons (any and all currently available), or will that be part of the mop up? A

The Wussification of America
So Duke, can you really image another country's military leaders thinking this "OK, we can beat their Navy even though they have ships all over the globe, we can defeat their Air Force based all over the globe, their Army and Marines are really no threat to our superior forces, and well their nuclear weapons are kind of wussy, but dammit, how are we going to get past all those WalMart rifles they have bought? So sure, everyone in the major cities can hide and be rebels, but how are they going to eat? Without regular resupplies into the supermarkets, the cities and tens of millions of Americans in those cities will never have a chance to fire a bullet once the highways are blockaded. We are a net *importer* of foods as a nation. We can't even feed ourselves without foreign suppliers. The world has changed. What does "well regulated" mean?

The Wussification of America
The two income point is interesting. When we see jobs that do allow for a woman to stay home, say being an autoworker in Detroit or a school teacher in Chicago we complain they are earning too much. When there is talk about raising the minimum wage, it's too damn much. Then was applaud and present as successful the investors that buy companies to move the jobs overseas. See the profits they made for their investors! I am still laughing my ass off at the school comment. And YAS, when the military takes over, do you think the President will be a Dem or a Rep?

The Wussification of America
In the wild west there were few law enforcement officers and they were shady at best. Has the world changed a bit since then? In 1783 the government had no money for a professional, full time army. Has the world changed a bit since then? In days gone by, hunting for your supper was just a routine part of your day. There were no supermarkets to buy meat. Has the world changed a bit since then? Not too long ago girls were taught to say no no no and guys were taught to keep pursuing past all those nos until she gave in. Has the world changed a bit since then? Bullying was just a part of growing up in the 1950s. Has the world changed a bit since then? Teenage fights in the 1950s were skin on skin. Has the world changed a bit since then? Some people change with the times, so wish to go back to those times.

One in Three Living in Poverty in Illinois
Texas also has a rainy day fund available. Yes, it would be possible to borrow money and do more but the Texas government runs on what the folks in the state are sending in. Some people can handle that, others want more stuff.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) At the expense of a s***ty education system, s***ty infrastructure and poor people suffering. We judge education systems by the student's outcome on standardized tests which sometimes unfairly characterizes the schools. In Texas we have a very large recent immigrant population which severly impacts our test scores. The schools are much better than most people outside of Texas realize. We also have a very strong state funded university system. Comparing U of I with UT - Austin, which I believe are very comparatable instututions, the in state tuition is about 33% less for Austin. I'm not certain what you mean about infrastructure.

Living Ex-Presidents
Alpha, when you write "one of" what does that mean?

Living Ex-Presidents
We stuck Panama with the bill to run the canal which has zero military use anymore (ships are sitting ducks) and less and less cargo strategy (ships getting too large to fit).

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 04:26 PM) I would be in Texas right now if my wife would let us go. But she doesn't want to be that far from the rest of her family. Happy wife, happy life. There is an intersting article on how Mexican immigration has really helped the economy here. It's a giant Doh for anyone that lives here. http://nation.time.com/2013/01/14/the-new-...changing-texas/

Who killed JFK
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) http://www.snopes.com/history/american/lincoln-kennedy.asp I love their explainations. I did question at first the both on Friday being 1-7 but once I set up the scenario that Lincoln was shot on a Friday there are only seven possibilities for any other day.

2005 World Series Ring on EBAY
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2013 -> 01:09 PM) I love truly unique pieces for my collection. I've got a section of blue prints from the new ballpark, plus a newspaper article from 1909 all about the "new" Comiskey Park being built. The one thing I really want to add is a White Sox stock certificate. Something like this would be the topper by far. Cool. I'd place a few other items ahead of the ring that might be in the same price range. A WS Game winning worn jersey from a starter would probably be tops on my list. Perhaps AJ, Konerko, or Jenks (framed with the final out picture). Would $25k buy that?

Who killed JFK
I think he was a patsy for someone or some group but was the lone killer. I am planning on taking a course this fall "Did the Beats Kill Kennedy". A favorite professor has a book coming out that is pretty cool about the subject.

Getting to be tax season, whatcha doing?
I will be running through a couple different scenarios. It seems from early information that my better half and I can at any time start claiming married and filing a joint return even though we have not had a legal ceremony. (waiting until any couple has the same opportunity). It would also pave the way for full health insurance benefits through my work. We're taking a look. So romantic this way. In the great state of Texas if you tell people you are married, live as a "married" couple, you are considered married. Add a joint return and the rest of the world seems to also.

Flipped Classroom
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 03:11 PM) I was just talking to my wife last night about how the Common Core standards are attempting to make the students much more accountable for out-of-the-classroom preparation, or at least that's how I understood what she was saying. Common Core is one of the events and resources that came together at the right time to add momentum to this idea. It makes it easier with so many teachers being able to share lessons that are spot on state standards. If you don't understand this explaination, go to teachertube / youtube etc and find a presentation that does make sense to you.
