  1. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) This was a hideous crime against children. Tex, this was a no brainer and PSU dropped the ball. Perhaps college boards will vet theor AD hirres better in the future, and the AD's vet the HC hires better and so on down the line. That is the why these sanctions are so necessary. Look at the positions of the people who lost their careers. Who had their reputations ruined forever. Who lost any respect they had among friends and possibly family. The personal punishment is enough. Again, what is a bigger deterrent Football team being punished or Losing your career, respect, and possibly going to jail? I just do not believe the next PSU president would risk his life in God forbid, the same situation, regardless what happens to the football program. We have sent one message. If you are a janitor or asst coach, tell someone famous and you are off the hook. Use your company as an example. A former employee is caught wrestling naked with a kid in a company restroom. The president of the company is told and does nothing. Should you lose your job so that another company doesn't do the same thing?
  2. I'm going to shut up after this. Bottom line, anyone who believe that extremists speak for an entire population do not know enough people in that population. Anyone who believe the few people they see on TV speaking out on an issue speak for anyone else besides themselves risk a huge mistake. From politics to religion, from sports to art, no large groups are that in step with each other. Balta can try and lump me in with the groups we see on TV all he likes, but I sincerely hope that no one else does. I have been very clear that I support getting government out of the business of marriage. That the people involved should decide what is, and is not, a marriage. I do not believe I have to wave a sign or be on TV for my opinion to be validated. When a liberal politician wants to take away my guns, he is not speaking for me. When a liberal politician wants to extend abortions to the third trimester, he is not speaking for me. When my state senators speak out against gay rights, drilling in Alaska, or a myriad of other things, they are not speaking for me. I shouldn't have to constantly point that out.
  3. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 12:49 PM) Will the crime happen again? Yes. There are too many Sanduskys out there. The penalties will send a "no-doubt" message to Head Coaches, AD's and university presidents in regards to how to react if something like this is reported up the chain at another school. That is why this is 100% justified and necessary. And yes, I still think PSU should have received the death penalty. We'll disagree. I do not believe what happens to the football program weighs heavier on the decision than personally losing your career and going to jail. You really believe the next PSU President would cover up a child rape if the football program was spared.
  4. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 12:40 PM) The answer to your last question at Penn st is "yes" The people that knew are already gone. You really believe their replacements would make the exact same decision?
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 09:07 PM) So obviously, the answer is to do nothing, be silent, let the hatemongers be the only religious voices who are ever heard, and continue to be dumbfounded when people lump religion together with the Chick Fillhators and leave it out of their lives. These are Americans, and are speaking for you also. As an American what have you done? I will speak out on a message board and try to educate those people that opinions among people who attend church vary as much as any other group in America. The answer is that as someone who attends church regularly I do not have to speak out on every social issue in America, any more than as a scientist you have to. Do you immediately denounce any scientist who makes a statement you disagree with? Again, you make it seem like religion means everyone believes the same thing. Why do you think there are thousands of different churches around America? And which group speaks for you 100% of the time?
  6. I find it so sad that people believe that without punishment to the football program, that crimes will continue to be committed at other universities. That people at universities will see Penn State and say, well we would do the same thing tomorrow if they left the football program alone. Really!? Guilty people are behind bars, their reputations destroyed, careers lost, all on a personal level. But that isn't enough for a high ranking university official to react. Somehow without innocent people losing their jobs and their futures hurt, it could happen again? I don't see it. I don't see another university thinking they would risk jail, ending their career, and the rest, as long as the football program would be spared. Balta works at a university, how far would you go to protect the football program? Would you go to jail for it? Does it really take destroying the football program to have you do the right thing?
  7. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) What lesson does that teach people? If you commit a bunch of illegal acts for the betterment of your program, as long as everyone that was involved, you get rid of/dies, you're good to go. BTW, the "theys" that remain have the option to leave without penalty. The players, who would suffer the most, have a free out. The lesson it teaches is guilty people are prosecuted and punished, not innocent. And no, the players would not suffer the most. There are a lot of companies, and individuals whose paychecks are directly tied to the program. There are vendors who supply services and equipment. Think of all the people who work directly and indirectly for PSU football. The businesses who benefit on gameday. Look at the economic impact that having a team means to a community. It is way more than the players.
  8. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 07:41 PM) If everyone knew about it, sure. This has nothing to do with hindsight. You don't need hindsight to know child rape is wrong and that s*** needs to be reported right way. These weren't recruiting violations. The bottom line is they protected this stuff so football could go on. Well, now it's time for football, and that school, to pay for it. I would have been absolutely fine with shutting that down for a while. *They* are all gone. The "Theys" that are remaining, and who would suffer the consequences, never had a chance to do the right thing. Never knew any of this was going on. I believe in punishing the guilty. And this is why I place the greatest blame with McQueery. he should have immediately stepped in to stop the abuse and called police. Not calling his dad the next day.
  9. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 07:54 PM) Just a place where his parole officer can find him. IDK, he'll be about 20 miles from Mexico. Maybe he can catch some "youth in a needle"?
  10. http://www.themonitor.com/articles/canseco...s-american.html The team has an "Adopt-A-Player" program. I wonder if I signed up if I can offer a room for Jose?
  11. I'm kindof all over the map on this. Jeffry Dahlmer used his locker at work to conceal some of his murders. Should that company be shut down? A couple executives sexually harass employees and rape them, should the entire company be shuttered putting innocent people out of work? In this case there were five or six people in the organization that should have acted, and didn't. Should all the businesses that rely on PSU football be shuttered? Should all the student workers lose their incomes? I have a hard time agreeing with those that believe the program should have been shut down. I guess I am also in the minority, next to Sandusky, McQueery, and now those janitors, will always be far more to blame than anyone else. They witnessed first hand a crime being committed and didn't immediately step in to stop it, or call the police. I place JoeP fifth or sixth in the blame game. Finally, hindsight is always 20/20. It is very easy to say what should have been done years after the fact. Hell, Sandusky should never have been coaching football. Victims should have come forward. His wife should have done something. But I'm not going to destroy an entire University of thousands and thousands over the actions of a handful. I doubt there were 10 people in all of PSU that would have made such a terrible decision.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 05:24 PM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederates_in_the_Attic Interesting book; not about the Civil War itself, but about peoples' interest in the Civil War. Historians, reenactors, Southerners. Southerners have more interest because of the hundreds of thousands of war dead that are buried in the south. The monuments are all over the south.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) I saw a thread started by Tex titled "150 Years Ago" and figured he was telling us about his upcoming birthday.
  14. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 11:19 AM) Plenty of black people and Spanish speakers that never have problems with the law. Now maybe there is a racist cop/sheriff that harasses them but we are talking about prison not jail. I agree. I was pointing out that innocent people may find themselves being investigated, the reasons may. or may not, be legitimate. When we allow cops and prosecutors to act as if they always know the person who did it, and to act accordingly, we are getting ourselves in a bad situation.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 06:06 PM) Let me ask it this way...do you think that same sex marriage should be illegal? Should your "preference" be codified in to law? I mean, I prefer heterosexual marriage for myself also, as I happen to be heterosexually married. But the way the laws of this country, and frankly many of the people of this country (not all, just the gay-hating ones) treat gay people sickens me. My whole point a moment ago was...if you're a religious person, and you believe that gay people should have the right to get married, even if it isn't something you "prefer"...then you're letting the people who hate gays speak for you. A leader of a group states away is on the news, how can I change that? Has your University made a statement about CFA? Who are they letting speak for them? Why is the default position supporting CFA? Because SOME churches and SOME religious leaders support them? There is diversity in teaching within "religions". Abortion, capital punishment, marriage, day to worship, dietary rules, customs, communion, rites, rules for priesthood, attire while worshiping, I can go on and on. When a news story quotes a Catholic who is holding a vigil because the state is executing someone and he claims that we shall not kill, and that includes capital punishment (the Catholic Church's official position) that doesn't reflect most protestant religions, and doesn't even reflect some Catholic's position. Is America really that unknowing to think that ALL people who are religious believe and think the same way?
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 05:33 PM) My specific question to you then is...if you believe this is a positive thing for your church (and you seem to genuinely do so)...what have you done this week to show that the hate dumped at CFA does not stand for you? What has your church done? I get pastors on my news at night supporting CFA. Has yours gone on the news and opposed this kind of hate? Called it out? Has your congregation stepped forwards and publicly showed that they don't speak for you? If not, then no matter how welcoming your congregation is...you're still letting the people in the line at CFA speak for you. Because they are getting out and doing all those things to express their intolerance. Is it really a requirement that a church try to get in the media on every social issue? You would have every church, every day, clambering for attention. I believe most people are intelligent enough to understand that we have religious freedom and worship in many different ways. I guess many here would classify me among the religious here, I doubt that you would put the words of those groups who support CFA's position in my mouth. So why would you for every other religious person?
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 04:30 PM) I'm sure in many places it is. But then my challenge to the religious is...if you don't want me to lump you in with the people who went to chick fil a yesterday to revel in how much they hate the gay...do something about it! Change your leaders. Create other public groups. When the bishops and the Vatican try to smack down the nuns for daring to question whether the current tax policy is consistent with Jesus's teachings, do something about the bishops! Jesus preached peace all the time, and we've gone to war in his name more times than I can count. The public policy persona of the Religious in this country is "Hate the gays and stop abortion". If you don't like me saying that...great. It's not my responsibility to change it, it's not the media's responsibility to change it...that's what the people who represent the religious in this country want to focus on...if you want that changed, it's the responsibility of the religious to change it. And it's been like that for all my adult life...to the point where one would think "Hmmm, maybe they don't want to change it". Millions and millions of Americans will be sitting in pews this weekend. They will be participating in denominational services and non denominational services. Their leadership will be international and local. There is no central organization. It's not only unobtainable, but unreasonable. You are also painting a Christian-centric picture. What about all of the other religions who do not recognize Christ as their savior? What the media chooses to cover are extremists in all arenas. Moderates are always shut out. What you are asking is for people who wish to worship in their own way to become more militant, more vocal. Why? To attract media coverage? A message of loving your neighbor, of sacrifice, or helping the poor does not sell newspapers, it does not drag in viewers. Some people believe that what they see on TV is the majority. In my experience in Texas and Illinois, that just is not the case. I appreciate the idea behind your post, but I just don't see it as being reasonable.
  18. Perhaps it is just the pews I have been sitting in, but what is being preached in the churches on Sunday is vastly different than what is being reported in the media.
  19. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 08:46 PM) lol. That's what soxtalk has become. It's politicstalk for the most part. Lame as hell. This is supposed to be a sports board. We could trade for strasburg tomorrow and it wouldn't generate 40 pages of this dumbs***. Most of the posters that live in filibuster rarely ever post in pht. We need to get rid of fili asap. It's a SPORTS board, people. For many of the posters here this is a community of Sox fans. Our numbers of regular contributors are in the hundreds, not tens of thousands, so deeper bonds are formed, a wider variety of topics are discussed. It is what it was suppose to be, a place where passionate Sox fans could meet and discuss topics that they are interested in. It is organized for that and has worked remarkably well for a long time. So perhaps posters here would put Stratsburg on a scale with wars, elections, and the dignity of humans and not discuss it as much. I don't find a problem with that at all.
  20. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:15 AM) 27 world championships Most recognizable team in all of sports. Packed house every night. Off the charts merchandise sales. Their own TV network. Come on. They're the best organization in all of American sports and it's not even close. Exactly my first thought.
  21. Managers, like POTUS, get too much blame, and too much credit.
  22. Coaches and hitters did this for decades without film. Film helps by allowing the swing to be slowed down and micromanaged. My guess is he doesn't want to micromanage the swing. let's not take out a protractor and gauge angles. I like his philosophy that by the time you reach the Cell, your mechanics are your mechanics.
  23. Mexico is safe, and incredible unsafe, in spots. The vacation destinations seem to be spared from the cartel violence. Most of the people I know who have family there or who vacation there just hold their breath getting away from the border. Wealthy Mexicans are flying the couple hundred miles from interior cities into the US. Private plane ownership has jumped up as well. They will even buy an extra car, something small and cheap instead of taking their Suburbans and Armadas into the border region.

http://civilwar150th.org/ There are a lot of resources for finding events. Some of the smaller battlegrounds can be the most interesting because you can get real close and personal. I'd love to see Gettysburg, that must be incredible.
  25. Texsox replied to Texsox's topic in SLaM
All of the major battlefields have stuff planned. Some started last year 1861 + 150. It is kind of a rolling thing, since the war went on for a few years.
