QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 05:24 PM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederates_in_the_Attic Interesting book; not about the Civil War itself, but about peoples' interest in the Civil War. Historians, reenactors, Southerners. Southerners have more interest because of the hundreds of thousands of war dead that are buried in the south. The monuments are all over the south.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) I saw a thread started by Tex titled "150 Years Ago" and figured he was telling us about his upcoming birthday.
  3. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 11:19 AM) Plenty of black people and Spanish speakers that never have problems with the law. Now maybe there is a racist cop/sheriff that harasses them but we are talking about prison not jail. I agree. I was pointing out that innocent people may find themselves being investigated, the reasons may. or may not, be legitimate. When we allow cops and prosecutors to act as if they always know the person who did it, and to act accordingly, we are getting ourselves in a bad situation.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 06:06 PM) Let me ask it this way...do you think that same sex marriage should be illegal? Should your "preference" be codified in to law? I mean, I prefer heterosexual marriage for myself also, as I happen to be heterosexually married. But the way the laws of this country, and frankly many of the people of this country (not all, just the gay-hating ones) treat gay people sickens me. My whole point a moment ago was...if you're a religious person, and you believe that gay people should have the right to get married, even if it isn't something you "prefer"...then you're letting the people who hate gays speak for you. A leader of a group states away is on the news, how can I change that? Has your University made a statement about CFA? Who are they letting speak for them? Why is the default position supporting CFA? Because SOME churches and SOME religious leaders support them? There is diversity in teaching within "religions". Abortion, capital punishment, marriage, day to worship, dietary rules, customs, communion, rites, rules for priesthood, attire while worshiping, I can go on and on. When a news story quotes a Catholic who is holding a vigil because the state is executing someone and he claims that we shall not kill, and that includes capital punishment (the Catholic Church's official position) that doesn't reflect most protestant religions, and doesn't even reflect some Catholic's position. Is America really that unknowing to think that ALL people who are religious believe and think the same way?
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 05:33 PM) My specific question to you then is...if you believe this is a positive thing for your church (and you seem to genuinely do so)...what have you done this week to show that the hate dumped at CFA does not stand for you? What has your church done? I get pastors on my news at night supporting CFA. Has yours gone on the news and opposed this kind of hate? Called it out? Has your congregation stepped forwards and publicly showed that they don't speak for you? If not, then no matter how welcoming your congregation is...you're still letting the people in the line at CFA speak for you. Because they are getting out and doing all those things to express their intolerance. Is it really a requirement that a church try to get in the media on every social issue? You would have every church, every day, clambering for attention. I believe most people are intelligent enough to understand that we have religious freedom and worship in many different ways. I guess many here would classify me among the religious here, I doubt that you would put the words of those groups who support CFA's position in my mouth. So why would you for every other religious person?
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 04:30 PM) I'm sure in many places it is. But then my challenge to the religious is...if you don't want me to lump you in with the people who went to chick fil a yesterday to revel in how much they hate the gay...do something about it! Change your leaders. Create other public groups. When the bishops and the Vatican try to smack down the nuns for daring to question whether the current tax policy is consistent with Jesus's teachings, do something about the bishops! Jesus preached peace all the time, and we've gone to war in his name more times than I can count. The public policy persona of the Religious in this country is "Hate the gays and stop abortion". If you don't like me saying that...great. It's not my responsibility to change it, it's not the media's responsibility to change it...that's what the people who represent the religious in this country want to focus on...if you want that changed, it's the responsibility of the religious to change it. And it's been like that for all my adult life...to the point where one would think "Hmmm, maybe they don't want to change it". Millions and millions of Americans will be sitting in pews this weekend. They will be participating in denominational services and non denominational services. Their leadership will be international and local. There is no central organization. It's not only unobtainable, but unreasonable. You are also painting a Christian-centric picture. What about all of the other religions who do not recognize Christ as their savior? What the media chooses to cover are extremists in all arenas. Moderates are always shut out. What you are asking is for people who wish to worship in their own way to become more militant, more vocal. Why? To attract media coverage? A message of loving your neighbor, of sacrifice, or helping the poor does not sell newspapers, it does not drag in viewers. Some people believe that what they see on TV is the majority. In my experience in Texas and Illinois, that just is not the case. I appreciate the idea behind your post, but I just don't see it as being reasonable.
  7. Perhaps it is just the pews I have been sitting in, but what is being preached in the churches on Sunday is vastly different than what is being reported in the media.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 08:46 PM) lol. That's what soxtalk has become. It's politicstalk for the most part. Lame as hell. This is supposed to be a sports board. We could trade for strasburg tomorrow and it wouldn't generate 40 pages of this dumbs***. Most of the posters that live in filibuster rarely ever post in pht. We need to get rid of fili asap. It's a SPORTS board, people. For many of the posters here this is a community of Sox fans. Our numbers of regular contributors are in the hundreds, not tens of thousands, so deeper bonds are formed, a wider variety of topics are discussed. It is what it was suppose to be, a place where passionate Sox fans could meet and discuss topics that they are interested in. It is organized for that and has worked remarkably well for a long time. So perhaps posters here would put Stratsburg on a scale with wars, elections, and the dignity of humans and not discuss it as much. I don't find a problem with that at all.
  9. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:15 AM) 27 world championships Most recognizable team in all of sports. Packed house every night. Off the charts merchandise sales. Their own TV network. Come on. They're the best organization in all of American sports and it's not even close. Exactly my first thought.
  10. Managers, like POTUS, get too much blame, and too much credit.
  11. Coaches and hitters did this for decades without film. Film helps by allowing the swing to be slowed down and micromanaged. My guess is he doesn't want to micromanage the swing. let's not take out a protractor and gauge angles. I like his philosophy that by the time you reach the Cell, your mechanics are your mechanics.
  12. Mexico is safe, and incredible unsafe, in spots. The vacation destinations seem to be spared from the cartel violence. Most of the people I know who have family there or who vacation there just hold their breath getting away from the border. Wealthy Mexicans are flying the couple hundred miles from interior cities into the US. Private plane ownership has jumped up as well. They will even buy an extra car, something small and cheap instead of taking their Suburbans and Armadas into the border region.

http://civilwar150th.org/ There are a lot of resources for finding events. Some of the smaller battlegrounds can be the most interesting because you can get real close and personal. I'd love to see Gettysburg, that must be incredible.

All of the major battlefields have stuff planned. Some started last year 1861 + 150. It is kind of a rolling thing, since the war went on for a few years.
  15. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 11:11 AM) Ok, I was exagerating a bit obviously but did you ignore the first part... usually there is a reason these people are suspects in the first place. Walking while black, speaking Spanish . . .
  16. Just wondering; is a business position on a social issue any more or less valid when it is rooted in blackmail or developed as part of a strategic business plan?
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 09:44 PM) I can't remember the last time someone not named me or y2hh got suspended back here, and that was for a series of f*** yous. This guy. But it was a while ago. Most suspensions go unnoticed.

The anniversary of many US Civil War events have been happening and will be happening. Next summer we are thinking of hitting the Civil War trail for some of the remembrances, events, (Celebrations?)
  19. For ten years I have had a great run with T-Mobile. I guess maybe I was just lucky, but I never really had a problem. Until this summer. Damn f***ers changed my all you can eat data plan without notifying me. Basically they limited my roaming data. Since I only data roam once a year, and not in the previous six months from their change in March, they did not notify me. So one week into a six week vacation, my wife and I were out of data. No trip adviser, no gas buddy, no facebook, no Pandora, no nothing. We had planned on using those tools for finding places to stay, etc. Their answer was finding WiFi hotspots. My response, look at a map of f***ing Wyoming. I'm thirty miles or more between towns and in National Parks, there is no free WiFi hotspots, only $1 a minute internet when I am lucky.
  20. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 05:11 PM) Peavy is going to cost $4M if we let him walk. That is locked in and will be on the books. Period. So, if we pick up the option the effective cost is $14M. Now, who can we sign for 1 year at $14M that will be better than Jake Peavy? Probably nobody. Also, you are giving up potential mid-season trade bait is we suck next year, or a draft pick if he says all year. I'd say to pick the option up. ^^^
  21. This trip we covered Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain (f*** the road from Grand Lake to Estes, never again), Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe, and Big Bend. I received a job offer from the school in Big Bend. Four teachers, 20+- students. They needed 4-8 grade Generalist (check) ELA / History emphasis (check) ESL Cert (check) Cross Country coach (check) Included is a 3 bedroom home in Big Bend for $460 per month rent. Basically the school is for NPS personnel, Border Patrol, and a few concessionaire kids. If circumstances were different I would consider it. Living in my favorite National Park would be cool. In the past couple years we have toured the Natchez Trace, Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah, Smokey Mountains, and Acadia. We've become Passport stamp junkies. Next year we are thinking Civil War sites or Utah for our summer vacation. I am also looking onto a teacher/ranger/teacher program that is active in a few parks.
  22. After a week in Yellowstone I must say what an amazing place. We saw grizzly bear, elk, antelope, sheep, bison, martin's, wild flowers, stunning vistas from valley to mountains. Ate some great food, camp in some great spots. What I can't understand is why they spend so much time on silly geysers, old volcanoes, weird geo-thermal pools, hot springs, and on and on. Who finds this interesting? (just kidding Balta). Once again I keep thinking I'm going to have to take Balta on my vacations to "learn me something". I am a huge National Parks fan. From Acadia to Big Bend. This trip we have visited Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Rocky Mountain (plus some other NPS sites) and will also stop in Guadalupe, Carlsbad Caverns, and Big Bend. The facilities range from excellent to primitive. The employees (yes those government types we like to complain about) range from awesome to mearly great. The altitude is kicking my ass. The drive through Rocky Mountain National Park scared the s*** out of me. I prefer beaches to cliffs that drop off 5,000 feet less than 18" from my car tires.
  23. I am travelling the backcountry of Wyoming and Colorado, writing this from the porch of a cabin in Colorado Springs. There is a really surreal element of emerging from the woods and seeing the US Flag at half staff. The lump in my throat as I asked someone what happened made it difficult to speak.
  24. I deserve the accolades for not posting much I know the personal views of most people here better than I do my closest real friends and family.
  25. Wow, I'm at the beach for a month with really spotty internet connectivity. I am so glad I decided today to chill inside and see what has been happening. As soon as I heard Greg + Idiotic Post = ChiSoxFn beat down I knew exactly where to look for the posts Looking at how much Chicagoans still enjoy discussing Ozzie, if I had a mediocre team and looking to sell tickets, I'd hire Ozzie in a second. Then I would Doug Collins him at the right time.
