  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) So why do you give Joe Paterno a pass? I can play this game with you. Why do you believe he should have been sent to South America and made to live in a mud hut?

I like they better as I age. I wasn't as much of a fan then as I am now.
  3. A lawyer would be in for a minimum of $300 trillion if they win the case. Hell, settling before court for $450 trillion would be a sweet paycheck.
  4. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 10:32 AM) Holy s***, guy. Does your contrarian facade know no end? I have been consistent since the story broke. There was a f***ing eye witness that didn't go right then and there to the police. He went home and called his daddy. From the story, it seems if daddy said to be quiet, he might not have even told Paterno. Yeah that guy should burn in hell. Sandusky's wife heard kids being abused and did nothing. She should be holding the first guy's hand. They had direct, first hand knowledge. Paterno did too little, but there were others who did far less and had more direct knowledge. There are others that had the positions of authority to actually do something, and they did less. ESPN hides behind being journalists, and did less. At least the two guys at Penn State were charged. Yet the football coach gets the headlines and conversations. To forgive Paterno and make him out to be perfect and having done nothing wrong, is just not right. To believe that his wins as a football coach and celebrity makes him more accountable than you or I is wrong. We all have an equal moral resposibility to report this. No one should get a pass because they told someone more famous.
  5. So in the interest of correcting and balancing an incorrect portrait of Paterno as a saint, we should also paint an equally incorrect portrait of Paterno as the devil himself? I am certain the people who were eye witnesses or who actually abused kids are happy for the sideshow.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 04:13 PM) With the exception of the fact that the 2 key guys above his head are facing charges. Thank you, you've added to my point that they are discussed less. Even facing charges, the law also holding them responsible, we'd rather debate the football coach's role. Seems lopsided to me. The person that told him was an eyewitness, not much to talk about there. The people with higher positions than him are facing charges, not much to talk about there. We talk about the head football coach.
  7. Did you happen to look at the people who served on the charity's board? So why is it that people prefer to talk about the head football coach's involvement more so than eye witnesses? How much ink has been spilled discussing an eye witness who leaves without calling the police, contacts his dad for advice, before contacting the head football coach? Whose stories contradict each other over what he saw and what he eventually reported. Now check out how much ink talks about Paterno. How much ink has been used to discuss Mrs. Sandusky who was in the house and heard signs of abuse, and did nothing. But people would rather argue Paterno's involvement. Seems lopsided to me.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 11:52 AM) Finished Cold Wind the other day. I agree about the ending...well done. I really enjoy the Joe Pickett series, but his standalone novel Three Weeks To Say Goodbye was top notch. If you're a fan of Harlan Coben, I would highly recommend it. I compare it to Coben's writing because it was intense, fast, and had lots of twists. I picked it up on eBay and plan to read it after I finish Dead Man's Walk. I bought it thinking it was a Joe Pickett book and was less enthusiastic when I realized it isn't. So I'm glad to read your recommendation. Via eBay I noticed that Goodwill has become my #2 bookseller

QUOTE (Stocking @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 11:27 PM) Started and finshed The Hunger Game series within a week. Book one good, two great, three slow. Great series overall, cant wait to see the movie which has been screen written by collins herself. I am teaching book one. I'm planning a field trip to the movie. I really like how both the girls and the boys seem to find something they like in the book. I also enjoyed how Collins stayed accurate on most things. For example, the survival aspects. Water is critical, more so than food. The science fiction parts are understandable. It's a nice book to teach 8th graders.

  12. It seems like we agree that if . . . People were not defending him so much, other people would not attack him so much. and If people didn't attack him so much, he wouldn't be defended so much. Now for something we won't agree on . . . IMNSHO there are plenty of people with more knowledge of the attacks and/or more institutional/positional power and authority than the head football coach. Those people with more positional power and more knowledge are mentioned much less, and blamed far less, than the head football coach. And I will lose even more agreement with this And the head football coach is held more accountable because he is the winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 football. Somehow winning football games elevates him to another level.
  13. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) Am I the only one still getting used to not seeing Buehrle's name in the rotation? Makes me want to puke. Seeing Mark take the field has been my favorite sign the season has begun. The smile, the quick throw and baseball was back for a new season. It's just not going to be the same.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) One other thing to keep in mind, Tex....genetics plays a big role as well....you might have a dog with fantastic genes... He did, well above my ability to train him. I bought him from a breeder in Bristol, WI. who was well known for field trail champions. I followed their program as far as training and nutrition. I sometimes wished I had spent the money for professional training, but I really enjoyed the time my kids and I spent training him and going to competitions.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) It's difficult to measure against other dogs because you're just measuring against other dogs eating the same thing, for the most part. Just in the last two decades or so are US animal owners beginning to go back to a raw diet in any numbers. Don't get me wrong...I am not saying a dog cannot live a happy life eating kibble. Just as humans can be happy without ever eating an ideal diet. However, if you don't know what you are looking for, or if you don't have a dog on an ideal diet to compare your dog against, it is really difficult to understand what you are missing. Dogs on an ideal raw diet will have almost pristine white teeth and no bad breath. They'll have beautiful shiny, healthy coats and have far less skin allergies. They'll have bright eyes. They'll have an ideal weight and have lean, strong muscles. They have more energy and at a more advanced age. They produce less waste because they are digesting more of their food. They also LOVE eating. As for your question about a balance of cuts...yes and no. We do not know the optimum diet for humans, let alone dogs. We just know that we require certain nutrients (and in certain combinations, these nutrients react differently to one another) in order to live optimally healthy lives. The best way to achieve this is just to eat as much variety as possible. If we eat a little bit of everything, we increase our chances of getting all the things we need to be optimally healthy. Therefore, you want to feed your dog a wide variety of proteins, and thus, a wide variety of meat sources. Whether this is beef, chicken, turkey, rabbit, tripe, etc., it just depends on what you have available to you as well as what the best sources of proteins are. Red meat is usually better than pork, as well as poultry, but fish is excellent. Green tripe is probably the optimal protein source, and if you had to choose but one source of protein, this would be what you would want to choose, but variation is always a good idea. However, what humans think of as great "cuts" of meat are not really what is important for a dog. In fact, the dog will choose the parts that are the most nutritious for him, which oftentimes are the guts (intestines or stomach) of an animal. The dog as we know it today is absolutely different than wolves were in the wild, and even different than the first domesticated dogs. But what people don't realize is that commercial dog food (kibble) is a relatively new creation. It's really only been around since about WWI in the US...if you consider that dogs have been around for tens of thousands of years, it takes a bit longer than a few generations to change their evolutionary design....humans are still struggling to adapt from "primal" eating habits that occurred a far longer time ago than that. That sure does describe my dog.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) Im not sure suing for 900 trillion is a good way to convince people that you dont suffer from delusions... Exactly
  21. QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 9, 2012 -> 01:11 PM) There are still plenty of instincts remaining...it's just that when you see stray animals, you see them in your neighborhood, or in an urban area, where their instincts and evolutionary biology are pretty useless. I think that really depends on breed and family history. Those 25th generation purse-pooches can't have much instinct beyond which elevator to press or which limo offers the best ride.
  22. About right. I'm not convinced this is a 4th place team in the Central. But it could happen. Anywhere around 2-4 seems about right.

  24. A dog looks at people and thinks, they bring me food, take care of me, pet me, give me this nice house to live in, they must be Gods. A cat looks at people and thinks, they bring me food, take care of me, pet me, give me this nice house to live in, I must be God.
