  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 10:30 AM) Which is why you have specific reporters assigned to specific beats sometimes. That's why you might have one guy who is a "Science reporter", where he is familiar with some literature and is able to ask the right questions/get the appropriate responses. In this case, you might have specific reporters assigned to say "Cover the sports beat" in a particular city, where that reporter knows both the Manager and the other issues involved. Or if it was a big enough team, you might even have a reporter or two dedicated to covering a specific team for a paper. You might have a reporter for the Sun Times on the White Sox beat, for example. A person like that might well be expected to know the issues regarding the White Sox well enough to ask an informed question or two in reply. Unless Joe Cowley is doing a story on the economy today. That's not what your original post stated and not what my reply was to. I just assumed that a journalist couldn't know as much as a PhD, especially if it was in multiple fields. Now we know.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 10:15 AM) Bulls***. Cowley isn't doing anything of the sort. He isn't just writing up Ozzie's opinion. He is taking it, and reinforcing it with his own opinions and commentary, while ignoring the hypocrisy of his work, and of his one sided interview. Balta spoke about what a journalist should do, even my post mentioned "in general".
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 10:17 AM) So you'd have no problem with a guy who read took a few history classes teaching your classes, without say any student teaching or education classes? No, what I am saying is it may not be the best hire if the top reason is "well he's been around forever, we ought to give him a try" or "he's been passed over six times, maybe we owe him this chance". As compared to Cooper who has experience *and* plenty of other reasons.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 10:08 AM) If they're doing a stellar job...both. That would mean they actually know the issue well enough to ask me about it...and that they actually know the people who disagree on whatever subject well enough to ask them for an alternate opinion. And tomorrow they do a story on the economy, then issues from the local firefighters contract the next. It just isn't practical.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 06:19 PM) Don Cooper disagrees. And all of baseball agrees. The only interview request we know about was for a pitching coach job. Plus Coop is a slightly different case in that he has distinguished himself while waiting. I am thinking more along the lines of a candidate whose top one or two reason to be hired is because they "paid their dues". Coop would be different.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 10:03 AM) How does one find an "Expert who can confirm or refute" a he-said, he said story? Kenny? Cooper? If we are talking about journalists in general, as it appears you did, how does a journalist become enough of an expert to challenge someone on every subject under the sun? Imagine some journalist challenging you about geology. Now imagine the same journalist interviewing another geologist about what you said. Which is better? Which will be more beneficial to the audience?
  7. Everytime I see this headline I wonder if he's really hiking the Appalachian Trail.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 09:23 AM) And a quality journalist would consider it his or her job to challenge the viewpoint of the person being interviewed to see if they can defend that viewpoint. Actually the quality journalist would find an expert who could confirm or refute the story not interject themselves into the story by challenging.
  9. I just completed a lesson for my 8th graders that I found on the Rock and Rockk Hall of Fame web site. I basically taught personification by using Wind Cries Mary. I am trying to find a more current song that also used personification, perhaps a hip hop song. Then, some ideas for other bits of peotry both classic rock and something more currernt.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 08:56 AM) I'd like to know why these people have 4 kids. What possible incentive is there to keep having children when all you want to do is get high? It's cheap entertainment, the sex that is.
  11. Found it, geez I thought it was something unusual . . .
  12. http://www.themonitor.com/articles/ohio-55...rm-animals.html Couple of nuggets . . . wtf? /gotta find out more
  13. The only reason for Buerhle to go less than $10 is for a three year deal. I also would be surprised if there wasn't some sort of option for a third year.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 08:14 AM) Make sure to explore the entire thread before posting Tex! I guess I shouldn't have people on ignore
  15. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 05:07 PM) Why shouldn't KW know everything that goes on in the clubhouse? It's his f***in team. He's the boss. He put of together. If he wants to sit on Konerko's lap in the dugout for every game, he can. Spies? Get the f*** outta here. Ozzie thought he was bigger than the Chicago White Sox. f*** him. Moral? If you are trying to put together a close knit team that will support each other, it's tough if someone is whispering to the boss about little s***. If Kenny can't put together a team and then trust them, he f***ed up.
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) They shouldn't just go in the opposite direction, though. This reminds me of the Democrats running Kerry in 2004. Basically their entire campaign was "he's not Bush". Finding someone with differing qualities is a great idea, but make sure there is also some substance to the person. I agree, I just believe that might not have been on the list when they hired Oz, and now it cracks the top 5. Oz will do that to you. It could also be a bit of a hang over from the win anyway you can even if it means a needle in your arse.
  17. I think "paying their dues" is being overrated here. In politics it's what got Dole and McCain nominations. I don't want them hiring someone from within because he stuck around long enough to "earn it" because he "paid his dues". I believe "paying their dues" is different than having someone with experience and a track record. Paying their dues smacks of me as he's been here ten years, patiently waiting for his chance, so we ought to give it to him.
  18. I'm seeing Marks' next contract in the $20 range. That would be a hometown discount *and* a more than the club would have offered to an equivelent player not named Mark Buerhle. Kind of a meeting in the middle.
  19. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 03:29 PM) Classiest managing staff ever assembled. I could see Thome working, but I'd have him behind Laker and ahead of Thomas. I think they could all do the job. They seem to be looking at guys with stronger work ethics, and some character, and by character I don't mean the Oz kind. I am liking the direction they are going. This will definitly not be Oz II.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 10:24 AM) If anyone in this organization deserves a cool nickname it is Mark Buehrle. I consider this to be Hawks biggest failing of this millennium. ACE?
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 10:24 AM) If anyone in this organization deserves a cool nickname it is Mark Buehrle. I consider this to be Hawks biggest failing of this millennium. Easily my favorite player on the current roster.
  22. They have control over the teams with the labor contacts that the teams enter into. This allows the teams to hire any player they wish, unlike some other union situations where the person has to be a union member *before* getting hired. This seems like a better situation for the teams.
  23. Whether Coop has 26 weeks or 26 years there is still an organizational chart based on position. So yeah, maybe he did go over his bosses head. That doesn't always work. Oz went over his bosses head and tried working out an extension with JR. Currently soxtalk seems to believe that Oz was the singular worst manager in the history of the game. There is nothing he can say or do that will not be blasted.
  24. University class will again be on my schedule. Grad School 2012.
  25. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) Never seen The Big Lebowski I've never seen it straight through. I've watched bits and pieces like ten times.
