Man Holds his daughter prisoner for 24 years
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 1, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) Unusual yes, but who would have guessed what the purpose of that was? Right. I guess my point was, of course it is unusual, but not criminal. When wqould you contact police? But much like Dahlmer had a victim run up to police and gbeg for help, sometimes the horrific just is not imaginable.

Cougar shot and killed within Chicago city limits
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) Cheap school, cheap beer Coming out of high school in the 1970s, the drinking age of the state where the college was located was a deciding factor for many of my classmates . Mine was simpler, finding a coach that would offer me a spot on his cross country team.

All Things Pro-Obama
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) Well forget about Obama for the moment... that glitch will confuse and disenfranchise people who aren't affiliated with a party, and that's a load of crap. Jumping in a little late, but our system, currently, is a political party places a candidate on the general ballot in November. How they do that is largely up to them. I do not know of any state that allows you to take a Dem and a GOP ballot for that reason. It is to help the party decide. Some parties (there are more than two) hold conventions and pick someone. Other parties spring up around one person so it is an obvious choice. But bottom line, the party selects who is on the ballot. If you are Howard Dean do you want the GOP to pick the candidate? If you are Mike Duncan, do you want the Dems to pick your candidate? So I do not get why independents, under the current system, feel they should pick a candidate from a political party. Now if you say you want a revolution, and change the party system, I'm all ears. But as it plays now, join the party if you want a voice. All you have to dso is declare which party you belong to. The vote is who is the candidate from that party. I get where you have to be a member of that party (organization) to vote in that organizations choice. I would not demand to wlak into a Rotary Club meeting and demand to vote, I'm not a member. If you want a really big voice, win office with that party, volunteer your time, talents, and treasure, and become a super delegate.

Man Holds his daughter prisoner for 24 years
QUOTE (almagest @ May 1, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) Damn liberal media! Seriously, though, I bet his wife knew, but was in denial. There are some things you'd rather NOT believe a person is capable of. I was looking at some of the film, the entrance was well hidden. I really think it is possible she didn't know, not probable, but possible. I'd like to know what was above the hidden apartment.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 05:27 PM) Haha and my class just finished Jaws yesterday, by the way, that really is a fantastic movie. I run a sea base and that has been our Thursday night tradition. Jaws, outdoors, with my 800W sound system and the base really thumping.

LET'S MAKE A LIST - PART 2
QUOTE (rangercal @ May 1, 2008 -> 08:56 AM) Knight changed it to Players instead of athletes yeah, I understand but when it comes time to compare a pitcher from 1908, a hockey player from 1961, a football player from 1985, and a basketball player from 1995, athleticism seems to creep into my thought process.

LET'S MAKE A LIST - PART 2
I am a little surprised at the make up of my list. Overall, I always felt basketball players are the most athletic, with hockey players close behind. Yet, I think I have more football players than any other category.

Ever Had to be a Pallbearer?
Basically its a snatch and grab with a walk. They will have a cart for any long stretches to avoid anyone getting uncomfortable. If the director doesn't clue you in, have everyone on one side start on the same foot, one time we had a little issue with being out of sync and kicking each other until we found a rhythm. Sorry for your loss.

Indiana voter ID laws upheld
I do not think it is racist. I think long lines at the polls is a mistake. I think long lines at the DMV to have ever American photographed by the state is a mistake. I think this is a solution looking for a problem. Stopping voter fraud is an admirable goal. But doing so at the expense of legitimate voters while ignoring the biggest source of fraud, absentee ballots, is political grandstanding and pandering for votes. Now I have to go check my mailbox for my stimulus check Bush Woot! Gop! there is some pandering I really like.

LET'S MAKE A LIST - PART 2
QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 05:23 PM) I thought that I'd edited out that Sox guy in my reply. I know who he is. I was giving you a hard time. As with all these lists, it is always weighted towards recent nominees.

UNDER AGE DRINKERS BEWARE!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 10:28 PM) No, you can actually drink until you die, its called alcohol poisoning and you dont necessarily choke on your own puke. That argument can end here. We both agree that its impairing to the user and you shouldnt be driving or operating or anything of that sort, I would NEVER claim that it doesnt impair you. Basically if we are going to legalize and regulate any "drug" for the purpose of altering someone's mind, for relaxation or social reasons like alcohol, cigarettes, or even for medicinal purposes like vicodin, Marijuana has by far the least side effects, long term damage, and total danger of impairment. Alcohol's main dangers are the damage to the body long term, and the threat of actually overdosing. Marijuana has no addictive effects, has no danger of overdose, and the long term health effects are much less than other regulated substances. I never said it should be legal for all consumption, but if we are categorizing drugs that COULD be legal and regulated, it is probably the least damaging to us, with some actual positive effects. I have said many times that you cannot OD on marijuana, and that marijuana is a pretty mild drug. You build a great case to end the sale of alcohol in this country, but the liquor, hotel, advertising, restaurant, and bar lobbies are too powerful to make that happen. But when someone drives high and gets in an accident, I blame the pot and you say it was some other cause. You even agree that it does impair you. But how can you not agree that if it impairs you, it is the cause? Guys have heart attacks while having sex, that doesn't make sex all bad. Guys drop dead while weight lifting, running, playing hoops, that doesn't make those activities bad. Why is stating that some people have died from smoking pot and being impaired such a big deal? Oh well, it was fun as always. See you next November to have the same semi-annual thread

UNDER AGE DRINKERS BEWARE!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 06:58 PM) I know its a great example of h ow black and white your arguments are. If you thought of guns the same way as weed, guns have the potential to cause harm to someone but its the person who causes harm, not the gun itself. Your argument would be the simple use of a gun is wrong because it may have the possibility of hurting someone in a bad situation. Any way you slice it there have been zero reported deaths in the history of the US directly related to marijuana use, it may have contributed in a bad situation, but you cannot die simply from the use of it. Again, if someone is so drunk they can barely get behind the wheel of a car and dies in an accident, I say alcohol was the cause, not a neck fracture from hitting the windshield, not a stupid decision they made. If someone is baked and gets in a car accident, you claim that pot did not cause it. You claim someone can die from drinking. If they are really drunk and aspirate their own vomit, choking to death, you would claim they died from vomiting, not drinking. It makes no sense. You can be high, but if something bad happens, never ever blame it on the pot. Pot is the perfect drug, and nothing has ever happened to anyone because of pot. If that really makes sense to you, great. And once again, I am in favor of decriminalizing pot, I've never said it was more dangerous that anything, or was so terribly bad for you. But I am realistic to know you shouldn't be driving or operating machinery when you are high. Your reflexes are much slower and accidents are more likely to occur. If you are high and get in an accident you would have avoided if sober, then common sense tells us that the cause of your reaction time slowing is the cause of the accident.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 03:31 PM) Yes, that is true, but for some reason, you only typically hear about the Democrat problems. I wonder why that is? Depends on where you live and which party is dominate. Down here it's usually the GOP trying to get a toe hold. All the Dems are related, so they behave. Or perhaps it is that media bias . . .

QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) In order to reduce confusion, I'm limiting it to the big 5 sports. Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey, and Soccer. Fair enough and I think will make for a great list! I will replae jackie Joyner from my list.

UNDER AGE DRINKERS BEWARE!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 04:07 PM) Are you a gun owner by any chance? Or a gun advocate? Yes to both. Great example, imagine if I argued that guns do not kill anyone. People bleed to death, but the gun didn't cause them to bleed. And if they make a decision to shoot themselves, it isn't the gun that killed them.

Indiana voter ID laws upheld
Some of the cornerstones of our society is we believe (correctly I believe) that the vast majority of people are honest and we value the rights of the people who are honest over the possible law breakers. Innocent until proven guilty. Freedom from unusual search and seizure. It is often times said we would rather 10 guilty men go free then one innocent person convicted. When someone has registered to vote and proven at that time they are eligible to vote, we then need a reasonable way to determine of that same person votes. Matching signatures seems like it should be good enough. Also, using Kap's theory, which I like, that all politicians are the same, what little fraud there may be, is balanced between the parties.

Cougar shot and killed within Chicago city limits
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) UPDATE... DNA tests show that the cougar killed in Chicago was indeed the same animal as the one who leapt over a farmer in southern Wisconsin (I was right on that one). And further, it is apparently originally from a population in the Black Hills of western South Dakota (I was wrong on that one - my guess was the closer population in northern Minnesota). Probably, it was also the one spotted in North Chicago and then Wilmette. That cougar travelled a thousand miles or so to get to where it died. That's interesting in itself, but its also important in that the appearance in WI and IL does not appear to signal a significant range expansion of the species south from Canada and Minnesota, but instead appeared to be a single aberrant animal. Linky. Wow! I didn't see that one coming. Thanks for updating.

UNDER AGE DRINKERS BEWARE!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) You are right, it could be a contributor to a death, as well as many other factors, cell phone talking, radio changing, being a woman. This is all very true, but its not the drug that killed the person, its their decision to perform an activity while impaired, its their own decision and their own stupidity, not the drug itself. But you can also die from alcohol alone, you can literally drink until you die, which is what separates it from Marijuana. I see you added. If the substance you take alters your judgment or mood, thereby affecting the decision, I don't see how you could give the substance a pass. XYZ drug makes you hallucinate, you make a decision while hallucinating to fly, you die while jumping off the roof. I would have to blame the drug. Now if you made the same decision while on a drug that does not impair your judgment, then I would agree.
