  1. chisoxfn said: "Basically the only thing they can do is look at the raw tools and find guys that have the potential to turn into good major league players. Its basically a crapshoot. " not trying to pick on you but this statement made me think of the book "Moneyball" which i'm currently in the middle of reading. the book's premise from what i gathered so far was that the above quote and belief system is a part of what allows the A's to be competitive in a small market. "performance scouting" and plate discipline as opposed to "tools" and major league body type are what the book preaches in scouting players. maybe i should have started a seperate topic but is anyone reading or read the book? it's really interesting. one thing that kinda shocked me was that the way they portray billy beane as being highly emotional, b****ing out players, very controlling of everything in the organization from the draft to the batting lineup, and even telling the manager where to stand in the dugout. it really reminded me of kw as far as attitude. unfortunatly that is the only comparison i can make.

  3. bmr-i'm gonna disagree with you. taking everything into consideration. age, salaries, positions, i think the sox would surely at least consider it. huff is 26yrs old is only making 325k this year, has played first, rf, and third (not very well) and his numbers this year project to 102runs 40hrs 91rbi's and a 948ops. this is his fourth year of mlb service. baldelli is 21, makes 300k, plays cf, and his first year stats project to 82 runs 9hr's 91rbi's 20sb's and with a 362obp, plus he's fast, and could hit in the top three spots in the order. this is his first year of mlb service. i'll admit that projections don't always work out in the long term, especially for rookies, but i really like both these guys. plus the numbers are for the d-rays. i know this trade won't happen hence the title the post but if the sox are inclined to trade maggs they could do a hell of a lot worse than huff and baldelli.
  4. brando- we're in total agreement. i thought that the eye roll would show that i thought sammee's story was bulls***. i should have been a little clearer on that. i don't think that sammee took any responsibility at all. disregard if your post wasn't directed to me.
  5. thanks for the exact #'s. i thought it would be pretty close.
  6. have we actually reached the point where we'd trade our offense for tampa's? it's getting close. jr would probably love to do it since tampa's offense probably makes about what maggs will get next year combined.
  7. the best part is how he is saying that he is a man and that he's taking responsibility for it. oh really sammee? i don't understand. what is he supposed to say? he got caught red handed using one of his model bats. is there any way to not take responibility for it? oh yeah there is, lie and say how it was a big accident and that he only uses it for bp and stuff. way to be a man sammee. if he's gonna claim that he didn't know that the bat he was using was corked than i don't see how anyone can not laugh in his face. plus i've heard reports that say he used the same bat in his final at bat in the extra inning game, the one where he struck out like four times and then in his final at bat manages to get some wood (cork) on the ball. two mistakes in a week sammee? wow what a coincidence!!! _________________________________ categories=less thinking!
  8. maggs for rocco baldelli and aubrey huff from tampa. there's no way tampa would do this due to the fact that they have baldelli tagged as the next ted williams and maggs is gonna make 14mil next year. but i just wish our organization could come up with players like this. we could move borchard to his natural rf position, have possibly the best young center fielder/leadoff man/exiting player in the game. not to mention huff who can play first, left, and right field. would you do this trade? what about maggs for baldelli straight up? _________________________________________ categories=less thinking!
  9. do the teams have any access to the results of the system during the game? from what i understand they don't, but i could be wrong. it's not like the umpire is calling a pitch a strike and then some nerdy looking dude with glasses comes out of the dugout with a notebook computer and tells the ump "sorry, the computer says that's a ball, change the call". guys like schilling, glavine, maddux are just upset they aren't getting every single call over the course of the game. the umpires just say hey don't be pissed at me it's the computer. they know if they can get the players against the system it will only help them. i think i saw a couple games on espn where they show the strike zone outline (three dimensional thing) from what i saw it looked like it did a very good job of showing the flight path of the ball and whether or not it was "really" a strike or not. i'm not sure if that was the questech system or not.
  10. this is all about the umpires trying to pass the buck. the whole point of the system is to have balls called balls and strikes called strikes in accordance with the rulebook. how can anyone argue with that? the umpires are just against any type of evaluation, whether it be human or computer. who remembers that game against pedro when the ump was giving him the batter's box lines as a plate. i think he struck out like 16-17 guys. these are the umpires mlb is trying to weed out and i am all for it. schilling should have the same strikezone as the guy he's pitching against. i'm not saying that the system is perfect. i'm sure that there are some bugs that need to be worked out, but the goal of the system is important enough to work through it. so :fyou shilling :fyou umpires wanting the spotlight
  11. i think baseball tonite has become a joke. i can barely watch it any more. whatever happened to going through the games one at a time, showing important plays throughout the game and then ending each game with showing the box score. i used to love watching either sportcenter or bb2nite if i missed the sox game, they would almost give you like a compact version of what happened, lead changes, great plays, and you wouldn't know who won the game til the end of that games segment, very suspenseful like. now they just zip through games as fast as they can so they can get to thier funny quips as quasi-analytical thoughts, dibble gets especiallly on my nerves. hey rob, pat riley called, he wants his hairstlye back. all bb2nite is good for is seeing who hit a home run even if it's for the losing team and was meaningless, but hey fans like the longball!! whatever. edit to add: am i alone in hating the bottom line during sportcenter and bb2nite?
  12. what year did frank become the full time dh? was it when konerko was brought over or was it before that. at the time it happened what was frank's response? i think that frank has a reputation of being horrible at first, whether or not it is justified is another thing. the point being is that frank has always hit better when playing first base in his career. i think it has been to both frank and pauly's detriment to have either one of them play 1b exclusively. they should have shared time there from the beginning. it would have kept both of them in the game more and i think pauly is suffering physically the effects of playing first base pretty much every day for the past three some years. i would really like to see pauly and frank split time at first for the remainder of the year. even if it is done to show national league teams that frank can play 1b, if they are looking to trade him it makes sense not to exclude half the teams in baseball by him only being a dh. but i doubt that frank will see any time at first after the interleague games and wonder if frank wants to play first anymore.
  13. total speculation on my part but: is it possible kw weaseled out of resigning and because of this manuel is resigning? edit to add: i'm new to this board
