  1. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) I hope Owens starts every game in LF and Terrero every game in CF for the next few weeks. Since Mackowiak is hot, he can get starts at 3B and 2B, and maybe come in late in the game in RF. I really really hope this happens. give these guys a chance every day for a while. not two-three times a week crap.
  2. Need to get younger and faster quick. Give tampa what they want for upton, he's gonna be a stud offensively. put him in either left or 2b next yr depending on Iguchi's status and hope he gets better defensively. tampa has two dominant starters kaz and shields, convince them that gio and masset will give them four . Trade Crede or dye to the dodgers for some of thier youngsters, maybe ethier or loney. KW is obsessed with power guys, we need hitters not sluggers. Fire walker, the guy is living off a half season of baseball where everything went our way offensively. Perhaps even see what LAA wants for figgins, maybe this is a good buy low time after some injuries, he can handle a few diff. positions, maybe you can get him cheap. I'm just tired with this teams makeup and approach. Give ozzie the team he wants, fast, fundamentaly sound and good defensively.
  3. Aubrey Huff might be good insurance for our back injury trio of konerko, crede and thome. Maybe even an option in left or right if pods sucks or dye gets hurt. Depending on what huff is looking to get $$ wise of course.
  4. I don't want alter boys, I want good ballplayers. Freel can get hammered every nite if it doesn't affect performance. Ozzie could just get one of his sons to be his chauffeur. What is the consensus on Lugo's defense? He played short on a crappy Tampa field, plus one of the reasons Tampa's hot shot SS prospect didn't get called up earlier was because of his shoddy D. They didn't seem to mind Lugo playing there for a couple years. Thoughts?
  5. Wouldn't mind seeing Freel in left and Lugo at ss batting 1 & 2. Not sure how realistic it is.
  6. It seemed for the longest time other teams would bring in set up guys from the bullpen that threw 96-97, whereas our guys would be around 93. Now we have 3 guys that can go 97+. What started as a weakness at the start of the year is now one of our biggest strengths. Props to KW. Now all we have to do is get to the bullpen with a lead.
  7. Uribe should try to steal second whenever BA goes down in the count 0-2 or 1-2 because 90% of the time it's going to be a breaking ball in the dirt.
  8. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 28, 2006 -> 02:13 PM) Ahh, Steff.. Ye of little faith! You've read me long enough by now to know I know better! I shall arrive at the Sox offices wearing a Haz-Mat suit and carrying a placard which states: "WHAT STINKS MORE THAN YOUR TEAM IN JULY? YOUR &^%!$%! SPECIAL EVENTS!" And I will be barking through a bullhorn, saying things like "Do I LOOK LIKE LANCE BASS? So WHY YOU TRYING TO BEND ME OVER?" I'm sure that will get me an audience with Jerry. Placards are so last year. Sandwich boards are now in style.
  9. In reply to Jim H: I do agree that it generally describes how any newspaper determines coverage of anything. It's pretty simple, but I don't think it answers the question. Saying that there is a direct correlation between the cubs popularity and tribune ownership implies to me, perhaps wrongly is that there are forces at work within the tribune to advance the cubs popularity. That's the motive, right? JimH wrote: They try to find out what their customers like/want. They realize a lot of their subscribers like to read about the Cubs. Big newspaper + very popular newspaper + editorial philosophy of writing about what lots of people want to read about = lots of Cub stories. I think the whole discussion revolves around the belief that they favor the cubs because they own them, not because they want to sell more papers. Is is a chicken and egg arguement? Maybe it just worked out wonderfully for them that way. I guess I'm a little more skeptical.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2006 -> 07:10 PM) As I said, the Tribune company does have a motive to favor the Cubs. What has not been proved is that the Sun Times is involved in anything except maximizing profits. Both these statements I think are correct. I also think they both equate to the cubs getting more coverage. I don't think anyone is arguing the first part, the interesting question surrounds the sun times. The obvious answer is the financial motive, but why would the Sun Times try to "out trib the tribune" as either Hendry or MacFail put it when dressing down sullivan. Seems to me any self respecting cub fan would be buying the trib based on your first statement above, the same way i guess sox fans flock to the sun times and to a lesser extent the Herald or southtown. I think what has happened is the sun times figure they have sox fans in thier pocket, I mean they are certainly not gonna buy the trib, generally speaking of course. So maybe they think they have nothing to lose and much to gain by cutting into the trib's flock of cub fans. End result you have one paper with a motive or conflict of interest, depending on how you look at it, and another paper that's trying to match it, favoring the cub in terms of coverage.
  11. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 19, 2006 -> 04:30 PM) Direct correlation between Cub popularity and Tribune ownership? Perhaps but certainly not the only factor as you paint it. Far from it. Could you please elaborate on why you think that there perhaps could be a direct correlation. Thank you.
  12. In my opinion, the bottom line is this. Take an honest look at the two teams in this city. The fact is one team just overcame an 88 year championship drought, while the other is just going about business as usual. The story, regardless of whether the other team plays in a "shrine" or happens to be owned by a media conglomerate, is the Sox. And those facts are not translating into more coverage of what the true "story" is. I don't think it's asking too much that the bigger story get more coverage. I understand the argument that some don't care now that the sox won the series, but the truth remains that the sox operate on a budget that's determined by projected revenue. Any medium, whether it's t.v., the papers, the radio that attempt to manipulate the general public into supporting one team over the other should be questioned, because in the end it affects the bottom line of the team we support. I don't personally know if the numbers hangar reports are the be all end all of what is actually occurring but to me it's obvious that the north side team at the very least is getting equal coverage when they shouldn't be. The story right now should be the sox and the historic run they are putting together at this moment in time.
  13. Another game where runs are only scored by Home Runs!!
  14. Regardless of the seriousness of the injury, the strength of the lineup without Dye takes a noticable hit. I know AJ has a pretty good average right now but Dye is tremendously more dangerous at the plate.
  15. QUOTE(JimH @ May 6, 2006 -> 08:06 AM) On another matter, Rob Mackowiak hasn't had a big hit for the White Sox yet. Not that big of a deal, just saying. 0-4 again last nite and a base hit would've tied the game in the 9th. Didn't see much of him when he was with the pirates, but his continued swinging at the pitches at his ankles is getting old.
  16. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Apr 15, 2006 -> 03:05 AM) Yep, well done to Frank. The A's though have really come out of the blocks slow. They're not getting good pitching from their starters, and their offense isn't built to win games single handledly for them either. Seems that they start slow every year and somehow still manage to win 90+ games.
  17. Javy last nite and both of Garland's starts I noticed this. Low and away pitch after pitch. Usually the first time through the order it's been fairly effective but once these guys come up and are looking away they are getting shelled. If they miss their location and leave it up over the outer part of the plate it's going for a home run. If they actually hit their location guys are still getting good swings on the ball since they are leaning out over the plate. I think the one time Javy elevated his fastball to a hitter the guys swung and missed for a K. I don't think he went up with a fastball after that. Still despite those three outings I'm pretty confident in all five starters.
  18. I believe we are getting 1mil this year on Vazquez and 3 mil on '07.
  19. They better hope that GM by committe works better than closer by committee.
  20. QUOTE(JimH @ Dec 16, 2005 -> 11:54 AM) I'm guessing Buster Olney doesn't realize who Crede's agent is. I can't see the Pirates taking that headache on, but they have had Boras clients before. Who knows. Piratees have a lot of lefthanders and they need a 3B badly. Do we have any info on when the physicals will be completed from the D-Backs trade? I doubt anything happens until the book is closed on that deal.
  21. The only way ozzie is not the manager next year is if he quits. There is no chance a team is gonna fire a manager they just gave a two year extension to.
