  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 12:08 PM) That's a s*** load of money to be paying for the top 3 in the rotation (probably $40M+). It is also about $40M for the top 5.
  2. ESPN rumour mill Cutting their losses Jul 23 - The Red Sox have had talks with the White Sox about a deal that would send fourth outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Chicago, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. But before they trade Pena, Boston would like to acquire Pena's replacement. Oakland's Bobby Kielty has been mentioned as a possibility.
  3. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 11:56 PM) That said, a lot of baseball people are gonna look at his win totals over the past few seasons and completely overrate him Those aren't "baseball people".
  4. Balls is that nice to see from Owens. + big props to DJ for "There's goooold in them there bunts!"
  5. Interesting how similar Byrnes and Rowand are. Byrnes career 162 game avgs .269avg/.329obp/.785OPS 19HR 67 RBI 19SB Rowand .287avg/.344obp/.802OPS 16HR 64 RBI 11SB Both have their career numbers being skewed by career years this year. Rowand is a couple years younger, a better CFer and is already loved here by fans. With Byrnes you can probably expect a little more speed and a little more power. Both just finally learned how to take a walk this year (or they're being pitched around because they're having good years). All things considered I suppose I'd prefer Rowand with his history and the defense and I somehow figure he'd come cheaper. But do you get the .934 OPS (not likely) or the .736 OPS of 2005?
  6. Rotowire "Byrnes is believed to be pursuing a package comparable to the five-year, $45 million deal the Dodgers inked with Juan Pierre last winter. It is believed Arizona has offered Byrnes fewer years and considerably less money, no doubt influenced by the bevy of talented young outfielders currently in their farm system."
  7. DJ: "No stiffie on that flag tonight." Did anyone else hear that?
  8. For as bad as it's gone for the outfield- having to go to plan C and plan Q because of injuries, it's interesting to remind yourself that Terrero/Erstad is an upgrade from last year.
  9. QUOTE(bmags @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 10:32 PM) why does it seem we never get the young talent we'd expect for our stars back? I'd rather just sign him. You are expecting way too much young talent from a 2.5 month rental. Anyone complaining that we didn't get enough back for Garcia (likely 2/5 of our rotation by the end of next year), a one-year rental of a guy coming off a mediocre year with decreased velocity and $10 million taken off our books, I thought was silly. That was before he hit the DL for the season. These, I think, are the same people who complain that we couldn't get Carl Crawford for whatever rediculous package of minor leaguers they concocted in their heads.
  10. QUOTE(The Critic @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 03:21 PM) Farmer is awful. Sleepy droning monotone. When he gets excited it sounds fake. A Jackson/Singleton radio booth is an interesting idea, but I wonder if they're too similar-sounding. Stone/McDowell would be a fun booth, I think. I'm for it! I love Farmer. Dry. Weird. Hilarious.
  11. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 06:50 PM) How is Gonzalez more flexible? He's not an outfielder. Gonzalez fills the Pablo Ozuna role. An infielder who can be plugged into the outfield. He has even played in center for us this year. Sweeney is not up instead of Gonzalez, because: 1) he would not be playing every day, just as Gonzalez is not playing every day, and 2) he is not an infielder. Now, if Dye goes on the DL, Sweeney will be called up.
  12. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 09:25 AM) I read in the paper today he should be back this week, and Erstad should be back during the Marlins series. I'm not expecting much from either one though. Erstad got hurt on a swing,so he may go down at anytime, and its not like Pods was Rickey Henderson II in Charlotte. He even says he's worthless if he can't steal. Unfortunately we have been redefining "worthless" in regards to offense.
  13. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 12:55 AM) Richar's numbers are heavily aided by his park and league. John Sickels ranked Cunningham as the #6 prospetc in Sox orgnization with a B- ranking. Richar was unranked by Sickels. On the face of it, the Sox traded a better prospect for an older one who they are hoping will contribute to the big league team in 2008. Good luck with that. Well I don't know how tough the Southern League is, but if it's easy, he was having an easier time than virtually everyone else in it last year. "The 6-foot-0, 170-pounder ranked second last season in the Southern League in runs scored (79), fourth in hits (140) and tied for fourth in average (.292)" Anyway, this guy could be our Pablo Ozuna....er..... our Andy Gonzalez, by tomorrow.
  14. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 04:08 PM) To me this proves more of a linkage to Iguchi. He is a FA, they havent had the production out of him that they would like. He led the AL in homers for second basemen in 06 and for 05-06 combined (5th in MLB for that period). He's relatively inexepensive, and there are only a handful of second basemen who've been more productive than him. But for free agent middle infielders who haven't given the production that anyone would like (offensively, that is), look no further than Uribe.
  15. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 03:26 PM) Are you s***ing me?! Does Cunningham have 20 doubles this year? or 8 home runs? or in AAA?
  16. How would Crede do (defensively) playing shortstop next season? Serviceable? League average? Better than Jeter?
  17. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 10:23 AM) The infamous white flag was a totally different situation. The team was only a few games out of 1st place and JR said something like: "Anyone who thnks this team will win the division is crazy". So yeah, there was some backlash. This year's situation is different. I still think it won't happpen until late July. We were 6 games out of the playoffs then, only 2 games different from right now. And JR was right, we weren't going to catch the Cleveland Maulers that year.
  18. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 04:28 PM) HEY KID I'M A COMPUTER STOP ALL THE DOWNLOADING! yes!
  19. Rudy Law Carlos Martinez "Deacon" Newson
  20. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 07:00 PM) Help! have they said why Crede isn't playing? My guess is, when you give Crede a rest (as Ozzie said would be better to do more frequently rather than having the back flare-up and have him out 5 days at a time) it will be against a tough righty.
  21. QUOTE(diegotony06 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 06:22 PM) If Hawk doesn't like Mariotti, then why the f*** does he continue to read him. He mentions him all the time, don't f***ing read the guy anymore. Damn. Please keep reading him, Hawk. And please keep ripping on him on the air. Mariotti is a gigantic douche who for some reason has a job as a sports collumnist with major newspaper with a huge readership. He needs to be ripped on on tv. It is one of my favorite things that Hawk does.
  22. This is a good move as he has been basically Eduardo Perez against lefties, but younger and can play more positions.
  23. As lefties hit Santana better than righties, I'm glad AJ and Erstad are in there, and I hope Mack in left too.
  24. Why does Ozuna go on the 15-day rather than the 60-day DL? Doesn't it open a 40-man roster spot if he goes on the 60?
