Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 11:14 AM) Train someone to look out for one crazed person in a sea of students? Sounds nearly impossible especially if the gunman is a student who goes there and "snaps" one day. Difficult in a high school setting? Sure. In an elementary setting I bet that difficulty is much less. EDIT: And I'm not saying this is going to stop every incident, but it'd be a plausible, good step forward.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 11:09 AM) An armed maniac with machine guns has the element of surprise. The gunman will now know that each school has one guard and likely do enough intel to find out who it is so they can find and kill that guard first. Again, targeting a trained officer who is on the lookout for such a person, and that person is now not targeting a child.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) goals? no. reasonably likely outcomes, perhaps more likely than 1 & 2? I'd say yes. Well s***, I didn't put likely outcomes now did I? And I mentioned earlier that the officer would be the first target, but at least the first target is someone trained to lookout for these nutjobs rather than a 6 year old kid. It's not ideal, it won't prevent every incident, but nothing will. It's at least a plausible fix that could help prevent a number of scenarios.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) 3) be on the other side of the building from where the shooter starts shooting, being as much as a city block and a floor or two away 4) taking the first bullet fired directly in the skull Really, these are the officer's goals?

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:56 AM) tbf a lot of suburban middle- and upper-class high schools already have "resource officers" that hang out on campus for various issues, though I remember him carrying and he split time between two campuses. But then again, he wasn't intended to be an armed responder to a shooting. Most high schools do have an officer liasion, but they aren't dedicated to that campus and typically split between other local high schools/middle schools. They'll do rounds occasionally, but their biggest role from what I've seen is to handle most of the student arrests/talking to's.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:56 AM) how is one guy gonna guard a whole school? plus those costs add up. i thought banning assault rifles fixes everything? lets just do that. Like I mentioned earlier, the officer has two goals in these circumstances: 1) Take down the shooter 2) Delay shooter enough to prevent mass shootings before backup arrives

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) sounds expensive. no thanks. It's probably what, the same cost as adding 1 teacher per school? I think that's pretty damn reasonable.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) Someone should ask him "What happens if a crazed gunman ambushes & kills the armed officer? Then what?" In theory the police officer should at least be a good enough obstacle to delay the shooter from doing mass harm before more officers arrive to help. That said, the officer would probably be the first target by any shooter.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:33 AM) LOL. At least they waited a whole week before saying this asinine s***. Hey, schools are already chronically underfunded and understaffed! Let's add armed guards to every one! MOAR GUNZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the fix is onsite police officers, than I have no problem helping to fund that. But I don't want non-official volunteers hanging around schools. But then again I typically have no problem passing referendums for most things education wise.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 08:36 AM) Meet the new boss same as the old boss. Edwin Jackson is an enigma that maybe the bright sunshine of day baseball can fix. That is not a good deal. The guy has been on 7 teams already. And still got a 4 year deal, dude has value to a lot of teams.

White Sox sponsor Little League teams
QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 11:17 PM) So funny. I know Ryan. His kids go to school with mine. Anyway, the problem isn't so much at the upper age levels. The problem is at T-Ball where tradition has each team named after a major league team. It really is lame to make those kids change team names now, and the Sox/OP should have made some exception to just have a patch or something. Even as a Sox fan, it annoys me. Plus, it is not like they are going to use the money saved for anything good. The fields are lousy in Oak Park and have been for a long time. The Sox should have sponsored the fields and cleaned them up good. That would have made a difference. Um, change team names? Do you really think t-ballers are going to care about a team name change during December? I could understand it getting confusing during the middle of the season, but heck most of those kids barely know what's going on during the game anyways. The league chose to accept this, on the Sox's terms. It's not like the Sox are coming in, slapping there name on everything, and leaving. They are providing real coaching and training, unlike the mostly terrible parent-volunteer coaches who just want to play their son.

White Sox sponsor Little League teams
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 08:41 AM) We never had major league team names. I played from Tee-Ball all the way through Pony. Super-young leagues, we just had colored jerseys. After that, it was local business sponsors - I remember playing for teams like Ambrecht Jewelers and Kelly's Appliances. But the Sox are a business too, so if they want to sponsor a team, I think it makes perfect sense to ask for uniform control like that. That's what OP does after T-ball, they have local businesses sponsor teams, but they've struggled to get full sponsorship in the past. This deal guarantees free jerseys for each team, and should help the league improve elsewhere (many of the southside fields could use work, or they can buy new team bats and equipment, but most importantly it helps the families that couldn't afford it before now should be able to sign up).

AJ will not return to Sox
QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) Starting pitching was not an area of weakness, besides, re-signing Jake only maintains the status quo, doesn't improve the team. RH starting pitching depth is still an issue right now.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 05:36 PM) There was a story about this the other day. Oak Park took them up on their offer and a few parents are all pissed off about it. I grew up there and played little league all the way up, that league is literally the worst when it comes to politics. If OP parents can't accept free jerseys and training for a freaking team name (which was all local businesses anyways, and they struggled getting some sponsors), then they deserve how much that league has gone into the s***ter. *Yes, I'm biased. They kicked out my favorite coach of all time because some new parents wanted more power.- Pork Ribs

QUOTE (zenryan @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 05:02 PM) Not a Bears fan here but I wouldnt put Kaepernick, Cam or Wilson over Cutler as of today. Same maybe with Luck and RG3. Not saying they arent super talented, just would rather wait two or 3 years to see how the young players adjust to the rest of the league before we starting ranking them in the top 10 QBs.
