QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) The biggest number I saw was 6/100, and even that was shrouded in mystery. Have you got a link? I have been curious what our offer was ever since he signed. No, total guess/gut feeling/reading between the lines. The Sox weren't listed often as a potential suitor because they wouldn't have been a sexy pick, but they were barely mentioned on Abreu as well. Rock indicated how badly they wanted the guy and that they felt good and confident throughout the process and basically I took that as they felt they had what should have been the best (ie largest) contract out there. Everyone and their mothers knew $100 million was never going to be enough.

QUOTE (LDF @ May 1, 2014 -> 10:38 AM) Hey Chisoxfn ..... how is it hanging ????? Been well ? in Tanaka , the offer for him, I believe was nothing but a token one. proof is when he WENT over for Jose I really don't believe it was a token offer. I honestly believe the Sox had the 2nd best contract out to Tanaka in the form of a 6/$120 deal with an opt out after 4 years, but the Yankees offered an additional year. Nothing the Sox could do in that situation.

Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:57 PM) The offense has been great but they still are on a course to finish 5-10 games under .500. After last season, that would be a solid improvement. If Sale returns but the offense goes south then we are probably looking at 10-15 under and that would be disappointing. We have no idea what we are looking at because it's May 1st. There is a ton of season left to play, and frankly, both the offense and pitching/defense should get back to where it should be. I view this team as a .500 team. -
Also, on a serious note, who was the last free agent starting pitcher the White Sox signed to a large contract? Jamie Navarro? I do believe there's a reason for that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) Giving him some OF time makes more sense than expecting him to become a 3b again, I'll grant that, but there are again a bunch of caveats. Maybe they want him focusing on just one position right now, maybe they want him focusing on getting better with the bat right now rather than learning another new position. That would be the key. Plus the Sox have some OK outfield prospects right now, plus these guys and local fans also want to see the team win too. If he keeps hitting, they'll get his bat in the lineup one way or another.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:24 PM) Tell you what, this is probably a bit of an unpopular choice, but I think I would have gone with Sefarian-Jenkins if all of those Safeties were gone. TE is clearly a need. Many would argue that it's not a 2nd round need because of having Bennett. But heck, having 2 TE's who are huge and capable of being difference makers in both the pass and run game would be a very nice thing to have. Plus, if Bennett goes down, the TE position becomes incredibly weak. Hageman would be a very good value at 51, but the DT depth is so great in this draft that if you did want to take a 2nd one, there should be plenty of solid guys, who could contribute as rookies, in rounds 3-5. Having two good tight ends is never a bad thing. It's a further extension of the offensive line with the ability to catch a few passes, it opens up more underneath passing routes (which can also, to some extent, allow guys like Marshall and Geoffriees to stretch the field with fewer guys around them), and it allows you to motion one of those guys or use them in different spots, such as full back or motioning out of the backfield.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) I'm still interviewing with places but that one is probably the place I do want to work. I'll probably get an offer soon so I wanted to give them first dibs but oh well. Here is the kicker, I interviewed with this place about 2 years ago and didn't get the gig. The people that interviewed me this time around remembered me. I know since it's a pharmaceutical company they'll have to DEA background checks and such but you would think they would run those after they extend an offer. They'll do it before. They don't want to whittle their search down to one person and extend you the offer only to find out that you have 8 illegal possession of prescription drug charges against you. Then they have to make the awkward call back and say they made a mistake and then go to the next person, which also wastes company time and money too.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) Just send Beckham to Toronto for Kyle Drabek or somebody like that, and just move on. I'd be on board with that. He's struggled at AAA this year too, but maybe his future is in the bullpen.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 02:12 PM) I'm a believer in Hoffman, but if the Sox took him over Aiken, I would be disappointed. With the amount of work they've put in, I would say they are taking the pitcher they believe to be the best. Frankly, from everything I've read and seen, I wouldn't be upset with any of Rodon, Hoffman, Kolek, or Aiken.

My current employers went about 6 weeks before getting back to me, as I recall. They checked background reports, driving history, credit report, anything and everything.

2016 Summer Olympics preparations 'worst' seen

QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 12:39 AM) Hmm, I wonder what other countries suffer from profound inequality while the government neglects spending on education, health, public transport, and infrastructure The World Bank lists China's Gini Coefficient (which is why is being talked about here, income equality distribution) as very similar to the US's. Most of eastern Europe and Scandanavia has very little inequality, with Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all coming in with Gini Coefficients (according to the World Bank) at less than 27, while the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Ukraine, Belarus, and Bulgaria also at relatively low terms. Germany is up there too, but then you also see Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iraq, and Afganistan in there too, and those aren't always pleasant places to live. Not trying to get this 'bustered, just wanted to point this out. It's a fun topic to discuss given the theoretical implications that come with such and how they different from expectations. Income equality is not always a good or bad thing. Sorry, forgot to include this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count...income_equality -
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 10:09 AM) I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you draft Teddy Bridgewater and put him in a West Coast Offense, you will have yourself a top 10 NFL QB. Teams are scared because he doesn't "look the part" and his hands are small. They are worried about durability. Accuracy is the #1 trait in a QB in my opinion, and he's the most accurate. The fact that some teams are supposedly salivating over a bum like Tom Savage but questioning Teddy is crazy to me. I don't think I've ever been so torn on a prospect like I have with Teddy. On the one hand, his body of work is incredible, but the offseason workouts he's put up really do make you question a lot. He hasn't interviewed well, he's held out of workouts and he was poor in the workouts he did, he has small hands, he's really skinny and not particularly fast or athletic. How much of him is Tom Brady and how much of him is Jimmy Clausen? I would hate to see him end up in New England because that would be a great contingency plan for Brady too.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 08:52 AM) He probably doesn't fit the Norv Turner system, but I think you make it work for someone like Bridgewater. I honestly don't think Teddy is going to get drafted in the 1st. I really liked Teddy coming out, but the more I see and read about him, the more I am reminded of Jimmy Clausen. I think he falls to the 2nd and it's certainly possible he's not even among the top 5 QBs taken. Of course, he could still just as easily be the 2nd or 3rd QB taken too. I think the Vikings want Bortles or Mettenberger

QUOTE (beautox @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:55 PM) the sox should be selling high on a resurgent Dunn and Ramirez if it brings back a solid return. Its always better to trade a year to early than a year to late and if Alexei is on pace for a 3.5-4WAR season there is no better time than cash in the chips with him, Especially with the log jam of MI prospects behind him. This is crazy talk. If the team is in a position to make the playoffs and then they traded all of their assets, no one would go to the games after July 31st and the season ticket renewals would continue to decrease. At some point in time, you just have to bite the bullet and keep guys, even if you could get good returns for them. You just don't sell the farm this year for an upgrade. Frankly, this team is a lot of fun right now, but it just doesn't seem that they are going to be competitive in July. I think the offense will hit a wall eventually and they'll lose a few games. But, if they're 5-10 games over .500 come the end of July, selling really will not be an option. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 09:19 PM) I mean I don't think anyone is disagreeing with your logic, the issue is the degree that what you're mentioning can affect his onfield results. If you believe that Flowers has "adjusted" himself into a sustainable .600 BABIP, you believe he has the best bat control of any player in the entire history of baseball by a very wide margin. No one has ever come even remotely close to sustaining that kind of BABIP for a significant enough length of time as to suggest it was true talent. Career BABIP all-time: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...0&sort=12,d The most surprising name on that list, to me, is Austin Jackson. Not because he's poor hitter, but because it shows how the evolution of the game has changed over 100 years. Old school thought was always to do what you could to put the ball in play, and while overall stuff has improved over the last 100 years, you sure don't see guys striking out less than 10% of the time anymore (nevermind the 1.7% that Wee Willie Keeler did). Guys are taught that striking out isn't as bad anymore and that a lot of times it's better to try and make good, hard contact on the ball rather than making weak outs. There are other guys on that list with high K% too - Choo, Trout, even Votto and Jeter, comparatively speaking.

Chris Sale to start Thu May 22 vs Yankees

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) I hate this. Yesterday I see a tweet that Sale is fine and all is well, and today it's gonna be that thing "oh, yeah he doesn't need DL he's not going on Rehab, no he's gonna be fine" and tomorrow it's "White Sox shut down Chris Sale indefinitely for elbow exploding in 6,000 places" I just had the strangest visual of Chris Sale visiting 6,000 places and having his elbow explode in every single one of them. "This is the time that my elbow exploded at the Kremlin. Oh, and here it exploded at the Eiffel Tower!" -

I don't think he will. Teams have grown leery of giving out large contracts to older pitchers and Shields is 32 this year. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) IMO: low-end prospects for temporary fill-in upgrades, a la Youkilis/Liriano. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) I think the only way they will be buyers in the traditional sense is if it's with 2015 in mind. Perhaps a guy is available that they can trade for and keep away from someone in the Central. But yeah, any other moves I think would be akin to Youkilis and Liriano from 2012. Pretty sure you just copy everything I say. -
QUOTE (DashFan @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) This point may have already been raised, but could it be less about luck and more about the change we've all seen in Tyler's approach at the plate? I'm a stats guy too and I don't mean to go all Hawk TWTW on anyone but I don't recall T Flo taking so many balls the opposite way in years past. I'm thinking we are going to see his BABIP stay up for the season (probably not that high though but above his usual average) as long as he continues to take balls to right center and up the middle. If he starts trying to pull pitches he shouldn't again he will be back to the Tyler Flowers of old. It's not impossible, but it's the next tier down from that. Over the course of a 162 game season, no player has ever had a BABIP this high. Pitchers will make adjustments and he'll stop hitting line drives, or he'll start trying to hit for power, or something, and the numbers will come down.

Great day for the NBA

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) The phrase "strip Sterling of his ownership" makes me think the NBA would have 100% ownership and would be the recipients of the cash. I strongly doubt this. If he were gambling or not paying his bills, they may be able to do something like that, but if they strip him of ownership, they are merely forcing him to sell the team and they would take controlling interest in it. I'm no legal expert, but just taking a $1 billion piece of property from someone seems to be theft property.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) Is there any other signs this isn't just luck? Like, yes obviously this is an incredibly lucky month, but is it possible he can hit .240-.250 because he's has a higher line drive rate than last year? Just hoping his regression is to bad catcher not worst catcher in history of league. Absolutely 100% yes. He could hit .270 with the way he's hitting line drives.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 08:32 PM) You going to the one at Target Field? I'll be there. EDIT: Probably not, since that show is not in July (August 2). Yeah not the cities, going to Fargo. I was considering the one in the cities but 6 1/2 hours is a long way to drive, and flights to Minneapolis are like $300-400.
