  1. I hope they included a clause that states that, if you are the winning bidder, you must forfeit your $20 mill posting fee no matter what. Also, I am hoping the Sox get in on this. Tanaka would be an awesome addition.
  2. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 04:36 PM) Dunn has value he will bring back something if traded. Given the current landscape, his contract is not unreasonable. I still disagree with this. The only thing Adam Dunn does valuable is up at the plate against right handed pitching. I don't even want to call it hitting anymore, because he hits some homers and draws some walks. He's an incredibly flawed player who has become more flawed as a member of the White Sox. Playing him in the outfield is similar to playing Paul Konerko in the outfield. Playing him at 1B is probably worse than that. He just does nothing well in the field any more. He can't run, he doesn't hit for a good average, and he strikes out a ton. He's, at best, a 1-2 WAR player being paid $15 million this year. The only thing not unreasonable about it is that it's only for 1 year, but, again, why wouldn't a team find it easier to go with a guy like Garrett Jones or Generic AAA Slugger over Adam Dunn right now? If they feel Adam Dunn can make that much of a difference, they'll trade for him come midseason and pay 1/2 to 1/3 of his salary.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Just shows how much the media wants clicks though. There is still a game this saturday that would put all of this to bed one way or the other. Auburn getting blown out by a 3 loss team and then smoked by Mizzou can sit the f*** down. But then what about Mizzou?!
  4. I'm sure you would get more WAR considering Didi Gregorious still has 5 years of controlled service time and he's a fantastic defensive shortstop. When making a trade like that, you want to get more than just that though, perhaps as much as 2 times as production as you give up with the idea that you will see a return on that production in the future. If they want Sale, they need to include Archie Bradley. Sale really has the best contract for a pitcher in today's game. He has an incredible amount of value. If they don't get an incredible amount of value - we're talking like 3 top 50-75 prospects or 4-5 top 100-150 level prospects - then there is no point in trading him.
  5. Some of it really is necessary. If you don't decrease the deer/pheasant/goose/whatever population, not only do they become overpopulated and cause direct damage on roadways and in towns, but they will also increase the number of predatory animals and decrease their distance from towns. Just recently we had sightings of a bobcat near an elementary school, which was the first local bobcat in years. If there weren't hunting allowed, we'd have a lot more and they'd be a lot closer to us. Game, Fish, and Wildlife does a great job of getting population numbers and limiting the number each year. Pheasants are around 3 per person, and you actually have to enter a drawing/raffle/lottery for deer.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:34 PM) Easy choice: Trade Keppinger and get nothing back He provides little to no value for this team as constructed, and eating part of his salary is a small amount of money. Him leaving doesn't create nearly the whole trading Dunn does. And you can theoretically receive someone like Jose Lobaton in return
  7. Despaigne I wouldn't mind if he defects in the next couple years. Gourriel is already going to be 30 years old in June.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) I just don't think it matters all that much...heck, Omogrosso in 2012 was probably better than Lindstrom last season. That's where you get into this argument about veteran guys like Lindstrom or Konerko taking time from other players in the organization. It's a Catch-22. Is there more value in his "veteran presence" or being able to trade him at the deadline...or giving more opportunities in that 7th inning role to a Daniel Webb? Is Leury Garcia going to get screwed over by the Konerko move...or is it better for him to be playing everyday at Charlotte with Semien? If there's any place on the roster that's BEGGING for veteran leadership, it's at catcher, where we have NOBODY that can even make a claim on the position in AA or AAA. I would rather spend $4-5 million there any day of the week than on a middle reliever. 2012 showed that could still succeed without a ton of veterans contributing in the bullpen, other than Jesse Crain. For all intents and purposes, Matt Thornton was already a shade of his former self by then and they still did just fine for the majority of the season with about 10 rookies filling roles down there. Brian Omogrosso threw 21 innings in 2012. I'm just going to ignore that. Frankly, I think managers prefer having veterans so that someone else can basically help them with the transition into the majors. I doubt Leury is going to get screwed out of this because he'll likely report to AAA. I wouldn't mind a veteran, but a veteran catcher fills a very narrow need. Frankly, Konerko is a backup to 2 guys, so he'll have more use as a player, while a backup catcher would be a backup to 1. That's why I feel that having a strong catcher's coach or mentor or whatever you want to call it is important. And the bullpen in 2012 featured Brett Myers and Matt Thornton as well. There was a veteran presence. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:10 PM) Maybe for Derek Jeter? Although that long contract had its moments in recent years as well. But I'm pretty sure the Yankees have never regretted that investment, all things considered. It's also one of the reasons they're shying away from a HUGE Cano deal. They don't want to set a precedent by paying Cano more than Jeter's long term contract, even though times have changed quite a bit. That's about the only one I can think of too, and it's debateable to as whether or not he's even been worth it.
  9. Looking forward to North Carolina BBQ or Chicago deep dish pizza more?
  10. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) If Arizona wants Sale, start with Archie Bradley and Didi Gregorius, and then add 2-3 more. But they've already said Bradley isn't going anywhere. They are going to have find it extremely difficult to acquire an actual ace type quality pitcher without giving up Bradley.
  11. If they are serious about dealing Sale, then they have to get a stud arm back in any deal, regardless of what teams do not want to do. Perhaps 2 stud arms, plus a slew of other prospects.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) Don't you think they would have traded Lindstrom and then tried to bring him back again if he had a lot of value on the market? I didn't say a lot of value - you can probably get Brandon Jacobs for him. But how could they have brought him back if the team acquiring him did so with intentions of picking up his option? The team feels like a veteran presence in the bullpen is necessary, and Lindstrom has done it for a long time. Come July, he may approach the team about being dealt to a possible contender. I'm sure the team will happily oblige.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 02:42 PM) The Sox need some stars as the second team in the Second City. Even Bill Veeck who had no money, knew that. Hopefully Garcia or Tank can be those guys but I'm not hopeful because they have no plate discipline at all. Sale is a star; that's a good start. But we need an everyday star or two. The Sox gave it a shot with Dunn but he didn't work out. Major bust. Konerko was a star a long time, but nationally nobody knew who he was except teams in our division whom he murdered. Bring me some stars!!! I assure you, people know who Konerko was. Guys who hit .280 with over 40 homers for a career (or whatever it was) get recognized. He was just never a superstar type player. You don't need those players to have a good team. You just need good players. Has there been a contract of more than $150 million given out to a player that the originating team didn't regret at some point in time?
  14. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) I'm not. More wondering about personality/clubhouse issues, than what you think I'm thinking. Could there be more to the WS benching other than mere slumping? Of course , they brought in AJ, so that would seem to negate it. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the diminutive 3/21 deal, obviously. Haha, I know what you're saying, but I can't turn down a good flea/caveman joke.
  15. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 02:23 PM) Then blow this team up. Like I said, we really have no elite propsects in our system unless Hawkins figures some s*** out and he's still a couple years away best case scenario. Therefore, this team isn't going to be able to develop the impact bat(s) it needs to be competitive anytime soon. Wasting the cost-controlled years of our young pitching is the dumbest thing we could do right now. So either buy some offense to support them or trade them off to the highest bidders and go full rebuild. And I'm fine with 2014 being a transitional year, but I'm not sure how they plan to get signicantly better by next offseason if we don't start addressing major needs now. For the most part, they have. The only two players I can really think of that would have any real value on the trade market are Ramirez and Lindstrom that are not young, cost controlled players are. Beckham and De Aza can be traded or non-tendered, Danks, Keppinger and Dunn have no real value, and Viciedo is still young enough and valueless that there's no harm in giving him another year. Honestly, what's left after that? There's no need to deal Sale because the Sox still have him under team control for a long, long time. You can look to move or swap Quintana and Santiago, but there's no rush unless a great deal comes along.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 12:47 PM) Very good point. For this contract...if he hits in 2014 like he did in 2013 he'll be very easily tradeable. If he flops, Loria can say "hey, we tried, didn't work, oh well!"
  17. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) If we trade Dunn we create a hole. We don't have a LH bat in the middle of the order. Who are you going to put there Conor Gillaspie? I am so f***ing tired of Jerry Reinsdorf and his loyalty belt. Dunn had some very good streaks last year and now he has someone protecting him again unlike last year. Why mess that up? Trading Dunn in July after a great first half is a lot better a move than trading him in Dec/Jan. This is to insure that he has a great first half. Dunn is brutal against lefties. Konerko is brutal against righties. Ideally, neither ever really has to face a same side arm again.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) Today, the White Sox chose Konerko over Dunn which should make Dunn's contract inconsequential. That's the real price of bringing Konerko back. As long as they are willing to pay that, I'm ok with it. I don't believe they chose Konerko over Dunn one iota.
  19. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:01 PM) but I have to wonder if there are some unreported fleas on Salty, given the marketplace. The guy had a bushy beard but I don't think we need to jump to conclusions here
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:00 PM) You realize the cell = coors field As ss2k noted, they are entirely different ballparks. USCF supresses averages, which is why you don't see many guys hit .300 here, let alone .320 or .330, while more balls will typically leave the ballpark. The AL equivalent to Coors is the Ballpark in Arlington (or whatever it's called now a days).
  21. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) I wonder if he also gave the team a list of AL teams he would accept a trade to. Why would they trade him though? He was the centerpiece of the one the Sox won offensively, and Konerko doesn't seem to be the type of guy who needs to win to stay in the game. I don't see any reason why he or the Sox would want a trade in this situation.
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:32 AM) Am I the only one that clicked this thread to see greg's response? I have been awaiting it. BEST DAY SINCE 2005
  23. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:17 AM) The Dodgers spent $42M and did the same thing. There is no reason to rush him out there as the team is not in place to contend anyway. But with this organizations record of breaking hitting prospects, I am sure you are right, regardless of what is best for the player and team long term he will be thrown to the wolves on opening day. They are also spending $200 million a year and fully expected to compete last year with Crawford, Kemp, and Ethier. It's completely different situations.
  24. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:12 AM) It's not a rebuild until Dunn goes. Yes it is. Saying it's not is ridiculous. The team is clearly in the middle of a transitional phase where we can expect some good things from them while also expecting some very, very ugly days. Getting rid of Dunn without getting anything back (meaning you are eating most or all of his salary and getting nothing of value in return) is absurd.
  25. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:29 AM) The price for even one big name free agent is just plain crazy. Folks wanted Ellsbury and he signed for $20 plus million a year with the Yanks? He isn't worth that much. I am sure the fans will now clamor for Granderson. What might he command in salary? There are good players available for smaller amounts of money. But, Konerko just freed up like $10M with his signing #1 - Ellsbury is absolutely worth $20+ million a year because if the Yankees hadn't given it to him, someone else would have. Probably Detroit. #2 - The fans are generally not clamoring for Granderson. He's going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 million per year. #3 - Your Konerko logic is backwards. He did not free up $10 million with his signing, he added $1.5 million to the payroll. The Sox merely owed him $1 mill next year (and each year for the next 7-8 years)
