2013-14 off season player movement thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 09:42 AM) He OPS's droped 3 to 400 points post steroids. I'd say he is the perfect fear of what can happen post steroids. I think his career follows a pretty typical path. His final 2 seasons in Oakland were the beginning of his prime years - 29 and 30. In New York, between the ages of 31 and 35, he put up 1.034, .939, .720 (injury year), .975, .971. He missed time again as a 36 year old and put up a .790 OPS, but then bounced back at 37 to put up .876. He's been pretty mediocre to bench worth since that point - not surprising for a 38 year old - but for 5 out of 7 years in New York, he was very good. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 09:14 AM) Norris Cole says get off me, homeboy. Sure would be nice if the Bulls had been able to keep that pick, Derrick Rose would have looked good backing him up.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 05:28 PM) When George Zimmerman was arrested this time, he was carrying 5 guns, including 3 handguns, the shotgun he is alleged to have pointed at his girlfriend, an AR-15 model, and 100 rounds of ammunition. This is the kind of person who needs to have their right to bear arms taken away.

There is not enough Norris Cole on that list.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 09:04 AM) I would like to have seen that, but with the ACC scheduling agreement, that isn't going to happen. But I will also be the first to say that if ND is the team left out of the BCS because of NIU, it's their own fault. Because they lost 2 or 3 or 5 games. Not because they didn't play and beat NIU. Just so we are clear. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) I've never watched a game with an Illini fan who wasn't crying about how announcers were biased against them. Dude you are so biased against Illinois fans, why don't you just give them some dap? -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 08:28 AM) Reading this i couldn't help but be reminded of how naive I was in, what was it, 2004, when Giambi had a major issue liek that, a thyroid or something like that, and I thought it was because of the fact they had to play their opening game overseas and he came back sick and spent the whole season collecting a huge paycheck while hurt. As I recall, he had a pretty sizable tumor on or in his stomach. He is also an example of a guy who came back and played pretty damn well after supposedly getting clean and he's had a pretty incredible career overall. -

Does anybody believe that Alabama should travel to Kent State? Or Stanford to Toledo? Or Texas to Ball State? Because if you think that sounds silly, then you should also feel that any other team traveling to NIU is silly too. It isn't going to have BCS implications for those teams - ohhhh you beat a MAC team on the road in week 3, congrats on winning the easiest game ever and it having absolutely nothing to do with you. And if you think they are going to do it during the conference scheduling - when it actually would have some BCS implications - you're crazy. It's a broken system. I don't mind seeing those teams there, and they should be rewarded (and NIU has had enough recent success that they really should consider moving if they can), but NIU is going to get stomped in any potential BCS game. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 07:50 AM) The "boy, Melky Cabrera looks like he could be a great value signing if he can hit like he did before his suspension" theory didn't work out very well because that great hitting season was steroid-powered. Melky was pretty unlucky last year. His HR/FB was 3.2% (compared to 7% in his career, not comparing that to the previous two years of 9.8% and 10.7%) while his GB, LD, FB, and K rates did not really fluctuate in a non-conducive, talent-reducing way. On top of that, he was hurt - he had a knee/leg injury and had a benign tumor removed from his lower back in September of last season. If you want, you can make the assumption that Braun was still using last year, but he didn't test positive and his numbers were still pretty damn respectable. -
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 11:19 PM) I know Crain's a righty, but I'd love to have him back. Reed, Crain, and Lindstrom plus whichever other Webtricka guy comes up (am I forgetting someone?) and we would be set for RHPs. I think Crain signs with a contender to rebuild his value. I'm fine with Reed, Jones, Lindstrom, Webb, and Petricka from the right side. I primarily suggested Mijares because the Sox lefties right now are, like, Veal and Leesman which, needless to say, leaves much to be desired.
-
The Giants outrighted him to the minors and he elected free agency. He's been inconsistent in his career, but he's still got pretty good stuff and could be a nice addition to the Sox. Not only is he still relatively young (29 next year), but he fills a need on the Sox and is the type of guy who can be dealt at the deadline for a decent prospect as well if the Sox so choose. Personally, I'd try and sign him to something like a 2 year, $6 mill deal with a team option - $2.25 mill this year, $3.25 mill next year with a $500k buyout or an option for $4.5 million.

Awwww what's wrong with theoreticals and widgets and the Hoozits?

Let's say Dunn is likely to put up a .775 OPS. We'll also give a 10% chance that can be increased or decreased by 75 points either way (.850 or .700 OPS). We'll also say Garret Jones is likely to put up a .725 OPS, and that there's a 5% chance that can be increased by 75 points or a 15% chance that it can be decreased by 75 points. Dunn is going to cost, at the barest of minimums, a C level prospect and $5 million while Garret Jones can probably be had for $2-3 million with no prospect given up. If you are the Yankees or the Mariners or the Metropolis Somethings or the Gotham Hoozits, which one of them is more attractive in the interim? Overall, there's probably only going to be a difference in actual production of about 1 win while you are also going to more reasonably platoon Jones than you will Dunn (due to the costs involved). Personally, I am going to take my chances on Jones every time. If he is putting up a .650 OPS and Dunn is at .850, and the offer is never rescinded (or is only altered slightly), I should theoretically be able to trade for Dunn later on.

If you look around, there's virtually no one who is not including Thomas on their actual or hypothetical ballots

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 04:28 PM) Paper tiger Chinese. I do not believe that there is any reason to fear China, but in the grand scheme of things, I feel that China is about 1,000,000x scarier than North Korea.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 04:04 PM) Other coaches in conference have suspended convicted felons for less than a game. It was overkill and everyone knows it. Its probably kept him out of the heisman race so its been damaging as hell. Seriously, how is he going to have any money if he can't sell a Heisman? -
The only reason Keith Law is voting for Frank is because he played for the Blue Jays.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 12:06 PM) I agree 100% on Morris. He should not be in, but I just don't trust HOF voters at all. I mean someone actually voted for Aaron Sele last year. I seem to remember that. I think he did it as a favor to Sele knowing full well that he wasn't going to vote for the full 10 guys anyways and he was a friend of Sele. I think that's actually kind of cool.
-
Morris should not get in. Yes, he has a couple of incredible postseason runs, but his numbers just don't hold up. He's already immortalized in the Hall of Fame with a lot of his performances, especially game 7 in 1991, but, hell, Miguel Batista had some pretty damn good outings in 2001 too and we aren't going to nominate him because of that, are we? I mean, Freddy Garcia is nicknamed "Big Game Freddy," and he had a pretty incredible performance in a World Series clinching game, but nobody is nominating him for the Hall of Fame.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 11:01 AM) I edited my post to correct a major typo that changed my argument completely, lol. But I think your analogy is in line with what I'm saying. I think were close, but if say the Red Sox and the Orioles both feel they need a left handed power bat and nothing but a left handed power bat, and Adam Dunn is the only one available, I think you could potentially see one or both increase what they are willing to give up (perhaps demanding the Sox pick up only $5 mill rather than $10 mill, or willing to give a better prospect, or whatever). However, that's a pretty narrow scenario and I think both teams would attempt to find a substitute that offers more utility than Adam Dunn, even if it costs them more. There are going to be more left handed power bats available than Adam Dunn.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 10:39 AM) Again, I think the effect of the market increases interest for Adam Dunn, not the price. Team A wasn't willing to pay market price for Player B, and so Team A accepts that its sights must be lowered to Adam Dunn. Team A is willing to pay more for less, just willing to accept less overall. I think it depends on how many buyers we have in our market, the level of demand we have in solely left handed power, and whether teams are willing to accept substitutes for it. For instance, assume that we solely have two packages of widgets, more widgets are better, and widgets are necessary. Package A has 10 widgets and package B has 5 widgets. Person A is willing to to pay 10 gold doubloons for widgets no matter what, while persons B and C are willing to pay 5 gold doubloons for widgets no matter what. Person A will end up with package A. That leaves package B has the only one available. It's not inconceivable for person B and/or C to increase their offer to make sure that they acquire some widgets. But let's say that person C is also willing to substitude widgets with maggles. They can instead acquire this package of 10 maggles for their initial cost of 5 gold doubloons, which in turn means person B is still only willing to pay 5 gold doubloons for package B of widgets and thus, no increase in willingness to purchase the package. I've made my belief clear that I do not believe that the Sox will draw enough interest in Dunn to trade him. I simply think he is far too limited as a player.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) And again, that's when you cut him. There was no risk here from Miami's pov. None. Definitely not, I just never thought he'd be this productive over any period of time, no matter the circumstances. He's been good.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) If that happens then shame on him and he's outta the league. But the upside was there from jump. He could also just as easily get lazy and stop putting the work in, which would cut into his minutes. No disagreement on the talent though - you don't get drafted #2 if there's nothing there.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 09:54 AM) Why wouldn't he on that team in that system? You think he's gonna just suddenly say, "f*** off LeBron, this is my team." Not necessarily that, but the dude's a headcase. I feel bad for him as a person because he's battled anxiety and/or depression issues in the past, but as a basketball player, he's a headcase. I can totally see him tripping over his own feet - smoking weed or doing whatever else, missing practices, getting arrested, and then getting cut because he's undependable and a cancer.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 09:50 AM) And just so we are more clear, that's what I said he could do. I didn't say he could be a starter. I said he could be a productive role player with Miami. And everybody was like, hahahaha. no way. He blows. You are saying "wait on Lamb, it's only been 12 games." Beasley has played in 9 games. Let's wait before we declare him a good bench player. Maybe he keeps it up. Maybe he doesn't.
