Draft Preview: High School Hitters, Part 1
witesoxfan replied to Ozzie Ball's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 3, 2010 -> 04:55 PM) I love Austin Wilson, check out his tool grades from baseball beginnings' updated scouting report: GRADES (Present/Future): Hit 20/60 Power 30/80 Run 60/60 Arm 70/70 Field 40/60 Overall Future Potential: 66 Yep, that'll work. It's been posted on here before. It deserves to be posted again. -
Livan Hernandez, record breaker

Even though Trayce Thompson has been compared to Mike Stanton talent wise by several publications. Thompson certainly has the talent, but it's all about development at this point.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 2, 2010 -> 08:59 PM) It made no sense. Why would the Angels want to trade a prospect of any value for Konerko when there were better options on the free-agent market who could be had for less $$$ than Konerko. If Matsui signs elsewhere (and considering the Sox were interested, it was very plausible), they might be more comfortable trading a prospect or two for Konerko rather than going out and signing someone else. It was a longshot by Williams and company, and they obviously didn't get laughed out of the room. The Angels just found someone better and moved on.

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 2, 2010 -> 12:25 AM) Based on what? His stunningly good looks.

QUOTE (GREEDY @ May 2, 2010 -> 07:35 PM) The Angels wouldn't have traded Brandon Wood for anyone in our organization save Beckham or Danks. I don't doubt they value him quite highly, but I doubt it is that highly. Anyways, that's beside the point. The point was that Williams was going to try and deal Konerko for a prospect or two to Anaheim, who he was then going to include in a deal for Gonzalez. It obviously didn't work and it was a long shot to begin with.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 2, 2010 -> 07:21 PM) Thanks Wite, I saw that, but there's also about 20 other sites with different ideas, I was hoping somebody here had some first hand experience. I was also thinking you could just paint over it, but then you'd have to paint the rest of it, and you just can't paint bricks. I suck at thinking sometimes.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 2, 2010 -> 06:35 PM) I vaguely knew there was some kind of connection between that guy and this place. But it doesnt do anything to change the fact that the Angels/Konerko part of that whole thing didn't make sense. Yes it did. The Angels had a need at DH, they've long been rumored/interested in Konerko, the White Sox wanted to acquire one more piece for a deal for Gonzalez, and the Sox needed to clear up some money. It was about a 1,000:1 shot at working simply because there were so many good DH options on the open market, but the Sox talking to the Angels about Konerko (probably a Konerko for Brandon Wood swap, or something along those lines) actually does make sense.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 2, 2010 -> 06:51 PM) Does anybody know the best way to remove spray paint from brick? We found a lovely message on the side of our apartment building today. http://www.ehow.com/how_2054186_remove-spr...from-brick.html

QUOTE (WCSox @ May 2, 2010 -> 06:08 PM) I was talking about next year and beyond. PK and Jones are both free agents this winter and Quentin looks like a shell of the player that he was in 2008 (even when he's healthy). This is one of the reasons that I want PK brought back. Imagine this offense without him and Jones. Oh this offense is undoubtedly sad and very untalented overall looking forward. I also don't want to bring Konerko back if the club isn't going to be able to put up a competitive team. If they are going to go into any type of a rebuilding, you may as well save money at 1B and try a few people out and see if something sticks, or sign a 1B stopgap for a year and then trade him at the deadline.

QUOTE (WCSox @ May 2, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Thank you. Signing Adrian Gonzalez to a long-term deal isn't going to change the fact that the rest of the roster can't get on base routinely. Hell, AGon might end up breaking Barry Bonds' single-season walk record on the Sox. I'd sell off veterans for good young players before I forked down $100M+ for AGon. There are just too many holes to fill right now. I'm also not buying this notion that guys like Pierre and Teahen are constricting the Sox's ability to sign veteran talent. While I agree that Teahen is overpaid, neither of these guys are owed nearly enough money to prevent Kenny from signing a quality bat. And it's not like Kenny currently has any reason to throw more money at this dung hill of a team, so it's a moot point right now. Let's not act like the Sox lineup is somehow weaker than the Padres lineup. Obviously you are exaggerating, but it's not like teams would pitch around Gonzalez to get to Konerko, Quentin, Jones, or Rios on a regular basis.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 2, 2010 -> 01:23 PM) i seriously doubt it was happening a few weeks ago, and then Howard set the bar at >$25 million a season. As Kalapse pointed out recently, it has essentially become an 8 year, $179 mill deal. In February last year, he signed a 3 year, $54 mill extension. That was followed up by a 5 year, $125 mill extension this offseason. The maximum value of the deal is 9 years, $192 mill due to the team option for $23 mill in 2017 with a $10 mill buyout. His entire deal is right at the market value set by Teixeira. Both Fielder and Gonzalez should be receiving contracts of about that same value, while Pujols's will be even bigger than that (Pujols will likely be around 8/$200, maybe a bit higher). Fielder and Gonzalez's agents can start their negotiations at 8/$200, but they won't sign for that unless someone overpays drastically. Boston will almost certainly end up with one of them, but I think where the other ends up is a wild card.

QUOTE (docsox24 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 01:42 PM) no matter how you make up the lineup, the playoffs are not realistic with this roster. it is lacking one and probably two good hitters. I do agree with this. If Ozzie or Williams could find room, adding two plus bats instead of a superstar might actually be better for this team (similar to what Williams did in 03 when he picked up both Alomar and Everett). But before that even occurs, the team has to show it can be a good team, and beyond that, you have to weigh whether or not it may be worth trading prospects, some who are lining up for significant playing time with the big league club within the next 18 months. I mean, if you can acquire said bats by trading middle tier prospects like Retherford, Shelby, or Gartrell, then you don't even hesitate. But if it is going to cost you any of Flowers, Hudson, Danks, Viciedo, or even Morel, the club really needs to step back and determine if it is worth it or not. You have to assume that the Twins are going to win 95 or more games. Whether they really do or have the capability to do that is irrelevant. If the Sox are going to trade prospects, they have to be under the assumption that they are aiming for the AL Central title, and they have to determine whether or not any trade or acquisition will put them within reach of winning 95 games. There's no point in trading Jordan Danks and Dan Hudson for Lance Berkman if they figure Berkman will only get them to 90 wins.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) Fukedome is a beast in the early part of every season. Still soooooooo happy the Sox didnt get him. I think Fukudome gets a bad rap simply because he was a huge free agent coming over from Japan and he hasn't put up Ichiro or Hideki like numbers. Had he replicated his numbers of the previous two seasons in a White Sox uniform, I wouldn't have been opposed to having him in the lineup at all...the dude gets on base. As a #2 hitter, he'd be just fine by me.

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 10:37 PM) Swisher wouldn't really have much of a role on this team, i'd much rather have Jones in the OF or DH than Swish. Willie Harris has been in the league long enough that it's evident to everyone in baseball that he is not a starter. He can be effective in short spurts and as a bench player, Pierre is just having a slow start, look at his career BA of 300 if you want an idea of the kind of production we can expect from him. Matsui or Damon don't bring anything to the table that Rios isn't doing for us, except that neither of them can field anymore and they're both much older. The grass is not ALWAYS greener. Matsui and Damon would both bring OBP to the team, and that's something that neither Kotsay nor Pierre are bringing to the table right now. Oh, and they both bring a bit of power too, which is something Kotsay hasn't brought in 5 years and Pierre has never brought to the table. Yes, Rios is doing well too, but his performance has absolutely nothing to do with what Matsui or Damon would bring.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 10:13 PM) The misspelling of the word "dominant" is quickly becoming one of my biggest pet peeves. Is it to the point where you are loosing your mind? (yes, done intentionally)

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 09:51 PM) Seriously doubtful. Although I would've said the same thing about that Arizona team. But the Rays legitimately go 5-deep rotation wise. Arizona had a pile of s*** after Webb/Haren. And their offensive core is better and more proven than Arizona's top guys were that year. And wasn't that the year they traded Valverde? That was a big loss right there. Yes it was. They had RJ in the rotation too, and Doug Davis wasn't half bad. Scherzer came up too and pitched well for them. They won like 90 games the year before, and I assumed guys would progress as the season went on. I just remember waiting and waiting for that team to turn it on, and they just never did.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 10:08 PM) I don't think people realize Torres isn't exactly a kid. He's fodder. Jenks contract and performance level is an issue. Viciedo has ability but the results aren't there yet and you have to wonder if he won't be bigger than Prince some day. I'm always trying to look at things from a positive perspective, but when looking at this team through the eye's of someone else, it's hard to get excited about anything outside of the rotation and maybe the backend of the bullpen, and trading will be very hard. There isn't anything even close to resembling a can't-miss prospect, and there really isn't much depth to speak of anywhere. There are a few intriguing pieces here and there, but if I were looking to trade a Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez, I'm not looking at the White Sox package as an ideal package. The Braves obviously overpaid for Mark Teixeira, but if you are trading Fielder or Gonzalez, you have to be looking for a package similar to that. Saltalamacchia was a huge prospect and still has a ton of offensive talent, Feliz has always had a huge arm, Andrus has always been very talented, Matt Harrison was a top 100 prospect and is probably a backend starter or middle reliever at the very least, and Beau Jones was a 1st round pick who is putting up decent numbers in the minor leagues (albeit, as a reliever). The closest the Sox can get to that offer is Flowers, Hudson, Danks, Viciedo, and Santos, and I'd say that Saltalamacchia, Feliz, and Andrus are far superior to the top 3 of the Sox.

QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 09:32 PM) I'm not seeing a lot of trade proposals in this thread... let's at least try to have some fun with this Here is my proposal: Jenks, Viciedo, and Torres They'd hang up. Jenks is an overweight closer who doesn't look good, Viciedo is a very talented prospect who hasn't been able to deliver the results you'd like, and Torres is a middle reliever at best, organizational fodder at worst. Hudson would absolutely have to be included, and you'd also be looking at dealing guys like Flowers, Danks2, and even guys like Morel and Santos would be included in that as well. A more realistic package would be something along the lines of Hudson, Flowers, Viciedo/Danks2, plus one more high upside piece. You don't want to give that up for a player that you have absolutely no shot to resign when his contract expires when he may not even put you over the top. You hope that players on the Sox (other than a couple) can get it going offensively, and then you consider something like this. It's rather meaningless to even consider trading for an offensive piece at this time simply because there isn't a good enough feel of what this team might actually be capable of yet.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 09:51 PM) That's good for a leadoff hitter. I just posted this not that long ago, but for all the flak that Swisher got while he was here and leading off, he still put up a .354 OBP in the 1-hole. It came with a .324 slugging, but you can't fault him for not getting on base. Teahen is as good of an option as anyone on the roster for the leadoff spot right now, so why not? Maybe it'll work. Anything to try and jumpstart the offense.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 06:20 PM) Kyle Gibson threw a one hitter....looking like he will join Liriano in the next 3-4 months to form the most fearsome 1/2 punch at the top of rotation in the ALCD since Santana/Liriano in 2006. That's a pretty bold statement, considering it was his 5th professional start and it was in High-A ball. Hyperbole, maybe?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 07:24 PM) Josh Kroeger 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's. Charlotte now leading 7-5, Torres very shaky in this start. Does anyone think that Kotsay could be replaced adequately by Josh? You just worry about his defense...he doesn't have any place on the diamond where he's not a liability, and he doesn't have quite enough power for DH. Sort of reminds me a little bit of Ross G-Load. I would like to say that Kroeger reminds me of Gload, but he really doesn't. Gload was good in 2003, and he absolutely murdered the ball in 2005 (.364/.416/.657/1.073, 38 XBHs in 263 PAs). Kroeger has yet to do anything similar to that with the Knights.

Really, really good. Oh, and the best team I can think of that had their pitching and hitting clicking this much at the exact same time is the 2002 Athletics, what with their 20 game win streak. In August of that year, they scored 164 runs and allowed 72. That's an average of 5.86 RS/G, and 2.57 RA/G.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 07:08 PM) And they're at it again already. 5 runs with two outs in the second off Hochevar. And who the hell is this John Jaso? This guy is raking since Shoppach hit the DL. Make that 9-0 Rays and still batting in the third. This team is somethin' else. They're obviously much more talented, but I hope this team doesn't crap out like the DBacks did in 2008 - they 21-9 in their first 30, and went 61-71 from that point on.
