QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) KW JR was an embarassment that i don't think we'll live down for a while. I have no problem with nepotism, just not in the 7th round. Tigers fans feel your pain.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) I miss draft and follow. I agree completely.

Who would you mortgage serious farm pieces for?

QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) With our top three guys from last year hurt, Flowers scuffling, Vicideo looking very 1 dimensional, and D2 whiffing at a prodigious rate, we could mortgage our entire farm system and come up with a single decent middle reliever in return. There just ain't that much in the cupboard right now, our picks today notwithstanding. (Okay, I forgot Hudson. Other than that though...) These guys still have talent. Minor leaguers do struggle, but it's a matter of whether or not they turn themselves around. Danks I've never been super high on, but Flowers has tremendous power and good plate discipline...anybody who expected him to hit for average is crazy. And Viciedo is 21 in his first go around at AAA, and he's holding up pretty well to the competition. I imagine the walks will come eventually, though he may never be an incredibly patient hitter. To be honest, Viciedo's numbers and everything I read about him remind me of Carlos Lee. He strikes out a bit more than him at this point, but I would be satisfied if Viciedo ended up a bit like Carlos Lee. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 08:11 PM) I thought you meant he was throwing walks. ha, so did I

oh, just another catcher...Jose Ramos

QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) If the Reds are as down on Alonso as you are, I'd take him in a buy low deal in a heartbeat. The guy still has massive upside. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm down on him, but it's not likely he'll be anywhere near as good as Votto. I overreacted a bit, but Votto is just really good and his name gets thrown around here too liberally as a guy who may be available for trade. He's really, really good and the Reds are a pretty damn good team too. I imagine if and when Alonso turns his season around, he'll more likely be looked at as a guy who can be dealt for a piece later on for Cincinnati, not as a guy that will force Cinci's hand into dealing Votto. -
I think he knew it was gone.

Sox take another catcher, Sean O'Connell

QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 12:45 PM) Joey Votto of the Reds. It's a long shot, but not an impossibility. The Reds have stud 1B prospect Yonder Alonso just about ready to be called up- so they'll have to either move one of these guys to LF or trade one. It wouldn't be cheap, but there's at least some logic behind it. People really need to stop mentioning Votto as a possibility to be traded. Dude's a career .310/.391/.538/.929 hitter, which I would say qualifies him as atleast a top 8 1Bman in the game. On top of that, Yonder Alonso has never showed any type of power ability whatsoever at the minor league level, and I strongly doubt his .248/.339/.376/.715 overall minor league line and .228/.284/.347/.631 line at AAA is instilling confidence within Jocketty and company that he is going to be a keeper. If anything, Alonso will be available, and with that kind of line in the minors, I wouldn't touch him. Joey Votto is not just a long shot, he IS an impossibility. I don't even know if you could trade Danks for him, and obviously the Sox wouldn't want to do that. -
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) In order to save money they only sent scouts to LA this year. Ha, I actually considered that possibility. Or they just think that anybody that LSU likes must be good enough to make it in the professional game. --- Kevin Moran, another college pitcher. There are a couple of ACC guys here, anybody seen him?

Dodgers take another LSU player. Jesus.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 12:45 PM) Even if the deal is done, no one is denying Lebron his "courting" tour. He's getting his visit to Wrigley, his ticker tape parade in NY, and whatever L.A. does for peopl Send them to rehab

Of the 112 pitchers who are qualified for the MLB ERA title, Jake Peavy ranks 111th and Gavin Floyd ranks 112th.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) People really over estimate the amount of strain 10 extra pitches put on an arm. It really is not that big of a deal, especially for any major league pitcher. Really? His first start back from the minors with the amount of strain he already puts on his arm? You are willing to let him throw 120+ pitches?

Worth noting is the season Adrian Beltre is having. Nothing out of this world, but an .865 OPS plus good defense is a steal at $10 mill. Just for s***s and giggles (and I'm really not one to second guess) Beltre ($10) + Thome ($1.5 + ~$300K in incentives) + 3 minimum salary reserves = $13 mill Pierre ($3) + Teahen ($3.75) + Kotsay ($1.5) + Vizquel ($1.375) + Castro ($1 mill) = $10.625 That's not including poorly spent money with the likes of Linebrink ($5 mill this year, $5.5 next) and arguably Jenks ($7.25, although the Sox needed a closer and it would have been impossible to envision a guy like Rafael Soriano becoming available for cheap during the free agency process).

QUOTE (Real @ May 30, 2010 -> 07:04 PM) I guess, perhaps people who don't have a realistic vision on what's needed to actually catch up to the twins might take a split A split w/ the Rays would mean something if we were tied with the Twins or maybe a couple games out, but we're flirting with 6-8 games back. When you get to that kind of deficit, you can't say "Well I'll take a split", because .500 isn't good enough when you're in that kind of hole. This team dug itself into an early grave and splitting 4 game series and going win/loss/win/loss/win/loss/loss/loss/win/loss all year isn't going to do s***. I think some people need to think more realistic about what kind of situation the Sox are in, they absolutely HAVE to play .600+ ball the rest of the year to, IMO, even stand a chance at winning the division flame away I generally agree, but a split against the best team in baseball can generally be considered a win, even though the Rays really aren't that good at home. They need to turn it on in June regardless.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 31, 2010 -> 12:57 PM) Seeing that we aren't a .500 team after 2 months I don't see why all of a sudden we're going to play well over it for a month span. Beckham and Quentin getting on track would do a hell of a lot to improve this team. We've been saying that for about 4-6 weeks now though too, so who knows.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2010 -> 12:53 AM) 1989 - No big surprise. His first cup of coffee in the majors, lots of players struggle. 1990 - First full season in the majors. Had it's up and downs. No where as nearly as bad as Beckham has been this year. He at least hit .250 and had a fantastic K:BB ratio for his first full season 1991 - The Beginning to something great. Really, not the greatest example, IMO. Ventura's progressions are no different than many players before and after him. The main difference is that Venture "PROGRESSED", Beckham has "REGRESSED" thus far. I'm not saying it's a terrible idea to let Beckham continue facing major league pitching, but the idea of sending him down shouldn't be dimissed. At some point you gotta draw the line. Ventura's first 141 PA's of 1990 - .169/.290/.280/.570, 19 BB, 19 K Beckham's 2010 season (187 PAs) - .196/.286/.239/.526 18 BB, 33 K I'd say Ventura is a fantastic example, personally.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 30, 2010 -> 09:44 PM) I still think you let your starter get out of that situation. See how he handles the pressure situation. Plus, as long as he got the pitch over the plate, they weren't going to hit him. He was already at 113 pitches, which was a season high, and, as you've alluded to, his mechanics are very jerky. You don't want to overstrain his arm when anything over a certain amount could very easily hurt him. That next at-bat could have easily been 7 or 8 pitches, and that puts him at or over 120 pitches. And even if they couldn't hit him if he was getting it over the plate, he wasn't getting it over the plate consistently (considering he walked 4 yesterday). You can't even be sure that he's going to get the guy out to get out of the 6th. I really don't know how you argue that taking him out was the wrong move.
-
I hope the next time Jayson hits a grand slam against James Shields, he throws the bat as high up into the air as he can, does a riverdance, runs backwards to 1B, and grabs his junk repeatedly on the way around. Shields is blowing this completely out of proportion. He was the one that hit Crisp in Spring Training a couple years ago to start that brawl too, wasn't he?

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ May 30, 2010 -> 02:11 AM) Reports say they knew of that when they traded for him. I'd imagine it'd have to be something else. Just that bad at practice. No motivation, no effort. He might not get another shot.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ May 30, 2010 -> 05:39 PM) I can't figure why they would take him out so early when he was clearly dominating. because he threw 113 pitches..?

still nothing on Steve Nebraska!

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ May 30, 2010 -> 10:32 AM) When will this team send Beckham back down the the minors???? They are ruining this kid. No they aren't. They're letting a young player work out of his struggles at the MLB level. The Royals let Alex Gordon work out his struggles in the minors, and look how he's turned out.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 30, 2010 -> 04:20 PM) Was there something more obscure? There were more than a few writers who said that if it had been an accident, rather than something he did to himself, they'd have voted for him as MVP, but they couldn't vote for a guy who hurt his team the way Q did as the MVP. Supposedly punching his bat was a coverup and he punched his locker or something else instead, or atleast that's what I recall.
