QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 09:58 PM) I'll never forget being at the interleague game where Colon K'd Barry the first three times he was up, and then the 4th time he hit, Bonds hit one about 20 rows up in the aisle between sections 100 and 101. I was in 100 in the 7th row, and it was 10 to 15 rows over my head. Pervical v. Bonds in Game 2 of the 2002 World Series was about the same thing. And Tim Salmon saying "Where did that land?" was priceless.

QUOTE (bobryansson @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 06:28 PM) It seems pretty common that an error in the field gets carried to the plate in a lack of confidence and concentration. In reverse, I do believe that the terrible plate performance for Beckham has led to lower confidence in general, some decreased concentration, and a sense of desperation that leads to pressure, all of which make him less effective in the field. As far as moving Ramirez, he has played well most of the time at SS (with the occasional bone-headed mistake), but he's certainly not been anything special. As a rookie at 2B, he was special. Certainly, we are all speculating here and nobody knows what will work or won't, and, again, we will never know on this one, but I am not willing to concede that it "Makes no sense at all." Beckham, to me, doesn't seem as though he'd be even average at SS. He seems as though he'd be dreadfully bad. Like, no range to his left or right and a mediocre arm to boot. He'd be like, Michael Young bad at SS.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 05:06 PM) Man the Cubs clubhouse is imploding. Between the Wells presser and Lous flip out, this team needs to be taken out back and shot. Atleast the Sox got a World Series title out of their self-imploding disaster - the Cubs haven't even gotten a playoff win!

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) Oh, I also love watching Juan Uribe bat. Every time I watch a game at San Fran, it amazes me how Bonds hit so many home runs there. That field is just mammoth. I don't care if he was on all the steroids in the world....lots of our players have been juiced up, and no one else could hit it out to right center there. I still tell people that the best hitter I've ever seen in my life was Barry Bonds, and I don't care that he was on steroids. I was obviously always a huge proponent of bringing Bonds to Chicago (he would have hit like 100 homers at the Cell), but that was always a pipedream. It's amazing to consider how good Pujols has been his entire career, and that, for a 4-5 year stretch (minus the one year where Bonds didn't play to get clean or to get on a clean enough cycle or because "he was hurt") Pujols STILL couldn't touch Bonds.

Ozzie Guillen's fascination with speed and scrappy ball players is a bit disturbing, but to be fair, Williams has his own odd fascinations as well, especially Darin Erstad. I do atleast believe that Williams understands the backbone of success, and he generally tries to acquire impact type talents, hence his trades for Everett (in 2003), Garcia, Contreras, the entire roster shuffling in the 04-05 offseason, Thome, Vazquez, etc, all the way through Rios and Peavy. Ozzie Guillen seemingly insists on playing the Mark Kotsay's, Timo Perez's, and Darin Erstad's of the world to the point of absolute nausea. Ozzie Guillen getting more power within the White Sox organization would be a very, very, very scary proposition and it would be equal to that of the New York Knicks giving full control of their organization to Isiah Thomas.

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 04:50 PM) Since when is considering your boss an inferior NOT insubordination? How is that not a fireable offense? Because JR loves Ozzie, and JR is above Williams, so it's obviously not insubordination.

You don't sign someone to an extension just to potentially move them the next season, and beyond that, AJ would seriously probably block a trade in that instance. AJ is falling off rather quickly, and counting on him to be anything more than a replacement level catcher in the years to come is a bit scary. I also don't see how you can assume Flowers can't handle MLB pitching, considering he only had 5 starts. 3 of them were bad (Mark Buehrle against the Twins, Freddy Garcia against the Tigers, and Carlos Torres against the Indians), and 2 were good (Jake Peavy against the Royals and John Danks against the Indians). You need to see what you have in Flowers at some point, and if the season becomes a lost cause for a division championship, you let Flowers take the reigns.

Apparently the Rangers and Astros have agreed to the players that would be exchanged in a deal for Roy Oswalt, but Texas needs MLB's approval for the deal because they are as financially starved as they are and Roy Oswalt is due a lot of money.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:50 PM) Maybe it's KW's act that has the organization weary. He's the GM, he should take responsibility for the team he put together. Instead, there's this notion that this is somehow Ozzie's team presumably because Ozzie says "we can win with this team" All acquisitions require financial approval. Williams could have very well wanted to sign Thome, but if Jerry Reinsdorf says no, then it's a no. And if Jerry Reinsdorf said no because Ozzie Guillen said no, then it's still a no.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) Jones and Guillen buddies, no? Didn't Jones actually play with Guillen in Atl. Maybe it just smells like a Guillen move Williams tried to trade for Jones when he was in Atlanta. I don't remember everyone that was supposedly going, but I do seem to recall that he was going to trade Magglio along with someone else, and both Russ Ortiz and Andruw Jones were going to come over.

QUOTE (C_LEE45 @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) Q for Fukudome am for it.... How are you going to pay for the rest of Fukudome's contract? Beyond that, how do you think fans are going to deal with Carlos Quentin resurrecting his career on the other side of Chicago? The guy is struggling, but you can't trade Quentin without getting a high upside bat in return. Quentin for Alex Gordon is actually semi-reasonable, because Gordon can still be a great hitter in this league. Fukudome is never really going to be anything more than an .800 OPS bat.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) ? You havent been around for a while right? Or maybe its just been me. Ha, I've been around enough. This organization has been a s***show all season, but it was never worth mentioning it from me until right now. The minor league system is shot (Dan Hudson and maybe Tyler Flowers are the only saving grace at this moment for me personally), the MLB roster has a bit of talent but it's quickly going to the wayside, the manager is not a real good in-game manager, the GM hates the manager, the CEO loves the manager, the manager can't control his kids and his emotions, and all the while they still have to play baseball. I'm not sure that you are going to USCF to watch baseball right now, I'm pretty sure you're going to watch a soap opera.

This organization is an absolute s***show right now

QUOTE (joeynach @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:20 AM) Its philosophical from the Top down and everyone in between. I was trying to make this point before. How did the Twins win like 6 division titles in the last 10 seasons, how did the Phillies go to back to back WS (and maybe a 3rd in a row this year). They were both really really bad and pathetic for awhile (late 90s), stocked high draft picks, patiently waited for their picks to develop, and devoted significant resources to scouting and player development. If this is what we want for the sox, then everyone has to commit to process, including us. Screw the get in contention by this date nonsense, lets get dominant for year after year. The earlier you commit to it, the earlier you reap the rewards. The last first round pick to play for the Phillies in the majors was Greg Golson for 6 plate appearances in 2008. He didn't have a hit and struck out 4 times. He was drafted in 2004. Their last top 10 pick was Gavin Floyd, and he was a colossal failure in Philadelphia. They had obvious hits in Chase Utley and Cole Hamels, and both Pat Burrell and Brett Myers were solid but not spectacular. And the Phillies really haven't had a lot of really high draft picks, and those haven't been particularly kind to Philadelphia. Burrell was 1st overall (a good pick, but he was never a superstar), JD Drew was the 2nd pick overall and didn't sign, Gavin Floyd was 4th overall and busted big time with Philly, Adam Eaton was the 11th overall and he was traded for Andy Ashby (and Eaton has been rather mediocre in his career anyways), and Brett Myers was 12th. Utley was 15th and Hamels was 17th, so as far as mid-1st round picks go, the Phillies have crushed, but they didn't do a lot with their very high picks. The reason the Phillies have succeeded really has little to do with stockpiling high draft picks and, as you mentioned, it has to do with player development. Ryan Howard was a 5th round pick, Jimmy Rollins a 2nd round pick, Victorino was a 6th round pick by the Dodgers, who was then picked in the Rule V by Philly, Jayson Werth was a small free agent signing, Carlos Ruiz was an amateur free agent signing out of Panama, and a lot of the others have been big free agent signings or trades. All the Phillies have done was to collect as much talent as they could wherever they could get it from, and then use excess talent to bring in others that they have needed. The Twins do the same thing, but with fewer resources, so they really focus on player development. As they've grown successful and built a new stadium, they've found more resources to retain guys on the MLB team, but they still focus a ton on player development in the minor leagues. The Sox really have to get back to doing that, and it may take a complete overhaul in the organization's philosophy to do so. They've done a great job of getting guys with more upside in the system, but, as evidenced by the struggles of Beckham and Quentin as well as other players throughout the minor leagues, they still haven't fixed it completely.

QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 08:49 AM) Because kids these days need to know that violence is always the solution to their problems. I think the violence in the story is a little extreme, but physical enforcement will make people in general think twice about doing something that is wrong. I knew to listen to my parents because I didn't like getting yelled at or having my ass swatted (never hard enough to cause considerable pain, but hard enough to hurt for about 5 minutes).

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 13, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) And what do you know, the Rays have seemingly been head and shoulders above everybody else all season, and here they are tied with the Yankees for first place. That's going to be some kinda race. There's been rumblings of a Cliff Lee to the Yankees deal possibly in the works. They've got the ammunition. Thing is with the emergence of Phil Hughes and Javy pitching much better of late (though Javy can obviously blow up at anytime), they might not even need Lee. I think the Yankees trading for Cliff Lee would be irresponsible on their part. Sabathia-Burnett-Pettitte-Hughes is a perfectly formidable postseason rotation, and Javy Vazquez is a good enough #5.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 13, 2010 -> 04:30 PM) "I tell you what everyone in this league wins and loses 60 games. It's what you do with the other 42 that counts." It's an old and tired cliche, but it's generally true.

QUOTE (Real @ Jun 13, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) Twins feeling the pinch? Down 7-0 to the Braves and lost yesterday too Good teams will lose games too, especially to other good teams. I highly doubt the White Sox are even on the Twins radar at this moment.

Toughest trophy to win in sports

I'd say the NBA is hard. A lot of times, you have to play against not only another team, but against the refs too! I do think I'd agree with baseball. The amount of work it takes to get a team competitive enough to actually make it to the postseason requires either a ton of luck or being far and away better at scouting and player development than other teams within your division, and even then you have to have a team that can win in the playoffs too. The A's make like, what, 5 playoff appearances in the 00s and won 1 series? The Angels were constantly making it, and, aside from their fluky run (when they could have easily lost game 6 of the World Series), they didn't make much noise in the postseason either. -
It's the Cubs you numbskulls

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 03:50 PM) After AJ is dealt Exposing him to RHP may end up ultimately lowering his value. Castro was acquired for Lance Broadway for a reason. That's about all you'd be able to expect in return.

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I've always enjoyed playoff hockey, though I've never been a hockey fan. I've been a Chicago sports fan since about, roughly, December, 2005. During that time, I've seen the Bears in the Superbowl; they lost, because of many reasons, but the Colts were a better team. I've seen the Bulls in the playoffs (atleast twice, as I remember), the best being with the Celtics; though the C's were a man down, the Bulls put up one hell of a fight and had what was arguably "the best NBA Divisional Conference Playoff Series" of all time (I apologize if that's actually the wrong name for the first round of the NBA playoffs...it's the first round and I really don't care). I've seen a playoff appearances by the White Sox (and 1 playoff game win) and two playoff appearances by the Cubs (0 playoff game wins) (White Sox 1 > Cubs 0)...but no series wins. A potential championsip, by a Chicago team? I was paying attention. Chicago wins - Chicago up 1-0. Super! Chicago wins - Chicago up 2-0. Holy s***! -I actually begin looking up hockey statistics. I didn't know that Martin Brodeur was still that good! Philadelphia wins - Chicago up 2-1. F***. -Continued: Apparently Steven Stamkos is really good Philadephia wins - Series tied 2-2 -AWW BULLCOCKY Chicago wins - Chicago up 3-2 -Holy s***, Chicago might win something. -Check Rotoworld:NHL - First time EVER Chicago wins - Chicago wins 4-2 -Holy s***, Chicago won something, since... ...I don't dare rain on Blackhawk fans parades with anything. But even still, having never been to the city, and, having never actually been to an event to truly understand a Chicago sports fan, I have a sense of pride with the city. Hawks fans, celebrate. You f***ing deserve it. -
