QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 23, 2009 -> 02:47 PM) If I was to tell you that a team was going into the season with the starting 5 having career ERA's of the below, would you peg them as div champs? 3.48 4.40 4.55 3.23 (oft injured) 4.62 looks like the Yankees circa 2003-2008

If BA is never given a long period of time to start, we never will know if he can be competent with the bat. He has a very long swing which will always prevent him for hitting for a good average, but if given enough time to find some type of rhythm at the plate, he may be able to hit .240 over the course of a full season, and with the defense he plays and the power he can produce, that would make him a very valuable player as a #9 hitter. I honestly would not be surprised to see Anderson put up something along the lines of .240/.310/.440/.750, and with gold glove defense in CF, he's probably a top 10-15 CF in the game.

QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) We could have had Orlando Hudson AND Bob Abreu for about 10 million this year. Unload Dye for some prospects and you are significantly better. You could even eat a little of that salary to entice a team to trade for him. I just don't get it. Ken Williams tried that and it didn't work.

The Mets want Jose Valentin to be a player/coach in AAA for them. Yay

I'm not a big believer in clutch, but I have something to throw at the clutch argument. .284/.321/.468/.790 career line in high leverage situations. That's compared to .761 in medium leverage and .730 in low leverage. Anyways, it's wrong to see Joe in a Twins uniform, and I don't hope he performs well this year. That said, thanks for the memories Joe. You helped win some damn big games.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) Dusty has accomplished more in the last ten years than Lou has....... No he hasn't. Since 2000, Lou Piniella has led teams to 4 playoff appearances, 4 90+ win seasons (including a 116 win season), and got the lowly Devil Rays out of last place for the first time in their existence, who were an absolutely terrible team at the time. Meanwhile, Dusty Baker has made the playoffs 3 times, won 90 games only 3 times, and has had some pretty outstanding teams throughout that. The only thing you could argue is that Dusty Baker may be a better playoff manager than Lou. Lou Piniella is far superior to Dusty Baker. Dusty is one of the dumbest managers in the game.

Thome Felt Worn Down Near the End of Last Season, Feels Good Now

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) Why not have a speedy slap hitter as a DH? That's exactly what this team needs, someone that can slap the ball through the infield gaps for a base hit. The DH position should be utilized similar to how the Los Angeles Angels used it last year with their crowded outfield. I'd also much rather have a player that can actually still play on the field as a DH instead of a guy who gets sore playing 1B in interleague games like Thome does. I think a player like Ty Wigginton, a player that can play multiple positions, would be a perfect DH player. Why would you want a player who can play multiple positions as a DH? That ruins the purpose of the DH, because you lose that versatility the second you pencil him in as the DH. I also despise speedy slap hitters because it still takes two hits to score them. I'd much rather have the guy who can drive himself in with one hit than the guy who needs 3 hits to score 1 run. -
QUOTE (qwerty @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 11:03 AM) The most bonafide talent resides in double a. Now if they make it to the majors and have a succesful career is still another thing entirely. Many top prospects that go on to have mlb careers either have limited time in triple a ( half a season) or in some cases forego triple a entirely and work out their ''mechanics'' in the majors. First hand experience is the most valuable out of all. Triple a is generally for all the washed up has beens aka nothing more than fodder material. Triple a is the home of talented but not talented enough overall players to warrant the majors. of course, sending guys to AAA is also good as you deal with experienced players who are more refined than those in AA but are not as talented. If you spend a ton of time in AAA though, people probably don't think much of you.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 12:46 AM) It doesn't sound like you like him "as much as the next guy." Me thinks you are exaggerating a bit on the 90 percent. never in a million years did I think I'd see this. Awesome. -

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 10:53 PM) well he's very old for a baseball player, especially one that stayed off the wild juice so what does that make Oil Can Boyd? or even more relevantly, Julio Franco? -
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) Damon might make a lot of sense in LF on a one or two year deal, if it looks like he's got something left, isn't too costly, and CF is solidified already with Lilli or Owens, or JorDanks is ready. Don't want him in CF anymore. I have a pretty good feeling that Johnny Damon won't sign with the White Sox any time soon.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) what if we need richard in the rotation? Even with all the recent talk, I dont expect Jose to be ready for at least a couple weeks, and who knows with Colon. We might need Richard as a starter, and then we need a second lefty in the pen. I like the idea of Poreda developing his offspeed pitches as a starter in the minors, but lots of guys have had success in their first year in the majors as relievers and then made the shift to starter If Richard makes the club much better as a second lefty out of the pen, you then go about trusting Marquez, Poreda, or any other number of AAA pitchers to be able to come up and get guys out for a couple of starts. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 04:06 PM) Why are we already trying to trade our prospects away? To try and bring better players in. Every team can always use better players. Besides that, the poster said he could be a decent starter OR trade bait. If the Sox stumble into 5 good starting pitchers and have the bullpen locked up, there is a possibility to then trade Richard if the right package comes up.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) I've already done irreplaceable damage to my liver since I've been here anyways. But once in a while it is nice to wake up on a Saturday Morning and not be severly hungover. That's why I usually wake up Saturday afternoon and not morning. Hangovers do suck hardcore.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) How do you guys combat burnout? I'm taking 18 credit hours (including a 3 hour night class tonight). I also get up at 4:45 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays for work (to film workouts). I realize that it's not as hectic as a lot of you people in the working world and what not, but it's starting to get at me. I'm physically tired most of the day (I fall asleep in most classes), but I have a lot of trouble sleeping at night. I try and sneak in an afternoon nap when I can but that's really dependent on what I have to get done. I don't know, but I've just all of a sudden hit a wall this semester. It's my most intense in terms of class load (i.e. 6 actual classes, no zero credit/half credit/required fluff courses), but I have to do it in order to graduate in five years. I procrastinate a lot. I think it honestly helps me until I actually have to do stuff. I imagine you probably can't do that though.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/neal/2...-popular-names/ Unless the Giants step in, I see Crede signing with the Twins for $4-5 mill with incentives.

Out of "your" Top Five White Sox moments....
witesoxfan replied to wilmot825's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The 2005 postseason was so epic that an afterthought is Iguchi's homer in game 2 against Boston. That was probably the second biggest hit the Sox got up before the World Series, everything considered, with Crede's game winning double in game 2 of the ALCS being the biggest because it got the Sox back in the series. -
more serious post this time around. Nationals have problems with young minor leaguer who received huge signing bonus. sounds vaguely familiar

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 17, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) I'd be surprised if Konerko's puts up that OPS again though, but that would be based on him being completely healthy throughout the season, which I doubt he can do. Still I think he'll get over an .800OPS especially considering he was our best hitter in the 2nd half of last sason argubly. I've said as much too, and I expect a pretty big season from him. To the untrained eye however, it looked like Konerko fell off considerably last season though, and based on pure statistics, it's true.

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 17, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) Jim Thome will be traded near the trade deadline to a contending team for a promising centerfield prospect, then Kenny Williams will resign free agent Ken Griffey Jr. to finish the year as DH. the latter half of that just became impossible unless Griffey is released by Atlanta

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 17, 2009 -> 11:54 AM) It's like when a bully roughs up your brother. You can kick your brother's ass all you want because he's your brother, but when someone else does it, you kick their ass. actually, that's pretty much perfect
