QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 17, 2009 -> 10:01 AM) We hear this crap about Konerko, Dye and AJ falling off every year. I'll believe it when i see it. a .782 OPS IS falling off, seeing as how it's 60 points less than his career OPS right now (which means it was probably more going into last season) and Pierzynski has only ever been an OK hitter, but decent for a catcher. I would say that AJ is probably pretty close to becoming a platoon catcher. So yeah, it's pretty believable.

Here's what I don't understand from KW's perspective

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 10:34 PM) I was saying that we'd have a mediocre to bad team, or a gaping hole somewhere. You said that is something this team hasn't ever really had. I know. I was just saying that I think it's likely one or both of those will happen, but I won't call it a certainty. Just semantics really. -
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 03:50 PM) i was thinking to myself that why is he highly regarded by all of us when hes not even a top 10 prospect for the sox(cole armstrong is even above him lol) and i was looking it up and saw on bbp, the projected 2012 linuep. i thought everything seemed about right except that they still have JD as our projected rf for 20012 lol http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prosp...009/267205.html I guess I never read that, but Richard was definitely not the most impressive pitcher. I don't know if you can be more impressive than John Danks was.

Chris Getz leads off the most games of any player in the lineup, but doesn't do so until May.

QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:25 PM) sox get whooped 15-4 The Sox sort of almost got back in that game, cuz Cameron robbed Maggs of a grand slam at one point too.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) Well, that'll certainly change this year. We'll see. I think it's very likely that could be the case, but at the same time, either players could step up or the Sox could be out of contention and won't be major players on the trade market. I won't call it a certainty that it will happen. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:28 PM) Griffey was mediocre. Riske always has been mediocre. MacDougal was hardly more than mediocre before we got him, and then we happened to get a good half of a season out of him. http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/riskeda01.shtml Riske had always been mediocre? I don't buy that. I also don't understand the need to go out and get a big name player. If you have to do that, it likely means you have a mediocre to bad team, or you have a gaping hole somewhere on your roster. The Sox almost never have that type of team. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) How about players that are just more than mediocre instead of upper echelon? Griffey was having a solid season last year when the Sox dealt for him, Riske had always been a solid pitcher even though he was pretty mediocre for the Sox, and MacDougal was absolutely fantastic for the Sox down the stretch in 2006. I'd say those are all above mediocre acquisitions. -
NY Daily News: Sox make Abreu 1-Year Offer

QUOTE (heirdog @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) Ok, so give up JD and $3 mill for Bailey and Dickerson...you still save $ and use your Swisher investment (Dayan) instead of plowing the JD money back in. You are assuming Cincinnati will want Dye at $8.5 mill, let alone giving up two solid prospects too. I won't make that assumption at this point in the offseason. -

witesoxfan replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
so then where do you trade Dye? The Sox don't take on money in deals (I figured this may have been one of the few times they would have, but even then, it wasn't going to be much) and Dye makes a pretty significant amount. I don't see any way Dye is traded at this point. The Sox roster seems pretty much set, barring some late 1-year deal to one of the few remaining free agents. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) Dunn is going to play everyday. There's no question about that. that kind of money and power, it's a certainty...I just assumed that was a given. I also have to imagine that Wily Mo Pena is out too seeing how terrible he was last year. Including Dunn in this, it's Dunn, Willingham, Milledge, Dukes, and Johnson. If you assume Johnson gets injured or traded, it actually sets itself up nicely. 1B - Dunn LF - Willingham CF - Milledge RF - Dukes so yeah
-
Adam Dunn Nick Johnson Josh Willingham Austin Kearns Elijah Dukes Lastings Milledge Willie Harris Dmitri Young Wily Mo Pena all 9 of them get to battle for 4 spots. Kearns and Young are almost certainly out, and Harris will probably move back to his 4th OF/super utility role. That still leaves 6 guys for 4 spots. I can't wait to see how this shakes out.

NY Daily News: Sox make Abreu 1-Year Offer

QUOTE (WinningUgly85 @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) Wow another outfielder nabbed by the Angels. Man its like they target whoever we go after. I don't get why Abreu would sign with them especially if he himself wanted 8 million which is what KW offered. I find that every big name player that doesn't sign with us it makes me feel like people honestly don't think we can contend. Honestly, thats what I love about the Sox! They always prove everyone wrong. We turn forgotten talent into superstars and get Cuban all-stars and we still play good baseball. Why won't someone take a chance with us seriously. Dye did and he got a ring. Because the Sox never offered him a contract. They probably told his agent, who then told people, that the Sox were willing to give him $8 million if they could get rid of a player. They were never able to get rid of said player. If the Sox had offered Abreu $8 million, he would be in a White Sox uniform. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) The White Sox even with Abreu had no chance of winning anything. The Angels are contenders, nuff said. I'm glad you're always looking at the bright side of things. -
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 10:39 AM) ? I would imagine within the circles there have been rumors that he's either bisexual or homosexual.

QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 12:52 PM) I pray EVERY night that will never happen... I could care less. I love Joe for everything he did, but at this point, he's nothing more than a player who is bound to get injured for a long period of time at some point during the season.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 05:09 PM) entire list of names to be leaked soon. If it's from 2003, I seem to remember that those not taking the tests received positive results, and that the entire 2003 team refused to take the test to get random urine sampling into effect. Unless of course they are just talking about the players whose urine they actually have, in which case no one from the 2003 White Sox will be on there.

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) Oh I'm aware that Hudson's a very good defensive 2nd baseman. I only came up with that lineup scenario with the thought of "What if both Viciedo and Fields are on the team?" I would assume that Josh would have an easier time adjusting to 2nd base than the outfield, so if he was on 2nd and Viciedo was at 3rd, then that would mean CF is the only place Hudson could've theoretically been slotted in. However... you can also argue that in the small chance that Viciedo plays 3rd AND Fields play 2nd that Brian Anderson should automatically play CF. But, if we had Viciedo/Fields/Anderson in the everyday lineup, then who would be the lead-off hitter? That was the only reason why I hoped for a Hudson signing in the first lineup scenario, because I think Hudson can help the team out in the #1 and #2 spots in the lineup more than Anderson ever could. If we end up having some sort of Fields/Viciedo platoon at 3rd, then I guess Getz would be at 2nd and Owens would be at CF as our lead-off hitter. ...I also hope we get someone else to hit in the #2 spot besides AJ, but it seems like with the logjam of guys like Thome/Konerko/Dye that we are handcuffed in terms of getting the types of hitters we really need. I will almost guarantee that unless Viciedo is playing in the OF or one of Fields and Viciedo is at 1B or DH, you'll never see the two in the same lineup at the same time. The only way I see it happening is if the Sox have a game like they had in Oakland where everyone gets ejected and Dye ends up playing SS.

Harvin does have fun tools, similar to a Chris Johnson type of guy, but he almost seems too injury prone to be a good NFL player. -
Baseball Prospectus has Sox down for 74 wins

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) What happens to that # if you exclude 2007? I imagine that means they've missed by 55 games over 5 years, so we are looking at a 14 game difference, which means the Sox would win 87-88 games. Not a good enough reason to conclude that they'll be contenders, but it's something to chew on all the same. -
QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) 1. Owens or Orlando Hudson CF 2. AJ 3. Quentin LF 4. Dye RF 5. Thome DH 6. Konerko 1B 7. Alexei Ramirez SS 8. Dayan Viciedo 3B 9. Fields 2B Do people not remember that Hudson is generally considered a pretty damn good defensive 2B? If the Sox sign Hudson, Brian Anderson sure as hell better be starting in CF, because his defense alone could win the Sox 2-4 games, and I don't think his bat is so poor that he would cost the Sox a ton of games with it either. The far most likely scenario sees Viciedo in AA or AAA, Fields at 3B, Getz at 2B, and Owens in CF to start the year. If the Sox can deal Dye and sign Abreu or if they can sign Hudson, Owens should be in AAA or on some other team, Getz should be in AAA or on the bench, and Brian Anderson should be in CF.

NY Daily News: Sox make Abreu 1-Year Offer
witesoxfan replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 10:52 AM) That can be your opinion all you want, but facts paint a different story, and that story is that Abreu is a MUCH better hitter than Dye and is about equal in the field. Abreu is a better player and would bring alot more to this team on the field than Dye. I don't think it's fact that Abreu is a better hitter or that he's necessarily a better overall player (though I believe that to be true). Over the past 4 years, Dye has had more XBH's in every season, his slugging has been better every season, he's had a better OPS in 2 of the 4, and he's out-homered him in all 4. What I do believe to be true is that Abreu would be a much better fit for the Sox offense than Jermaine Dye or Paul Konerko at the given moment, and, though neither will really be easy to move at this point, Dye is easier to move and has more value as well.
