If you could improve this team, how would you do it?

QUOTE (VAfan @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 09:39 PM) I still believe there is a need for a right handed bat who can hit lefties well. We still struggle against lefties. Tonight, Cliff Lee shut us down. Thome traditonally hits lefties much worse than he does righties. This year, he's hitting them better. But don't expect it to hold. Joe Crede can't hit lefties to save himself this season. So, that spells Josh Fields in my book. But when he's ready. I know he's had some injury issues. When he's healthy, I'd ship out Ozuna and bring up Fields. He'd spell Crede against most lefties, and hit for Thome some too. Not a big deal, but it could help win a couple ball games. I'd also keep an eye on Freddy Garcia's comeback. But there's another thread on that. Crede's hit lefties better in the past, but he's not going to start hitting them at any point yet Thome has absolutely destroyed lefties this season, but that shouldn't hold? Really?! I also don't think the Sox should have anything to do with Freddy Garcia, but whatever. -
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 05:09 PM) Christ... I am not disputing that, merely stating Freddy's had a better career than Vazquez. except you haven't been stating that, you've been saying you'd rather have Freddy Garcia starting than Javier Vazquez. You even said that in the post I quoted - Oh, and I'd take Freddy's 4.09 career ERA over Vazquez's Montreal-NL-inflated career 4.29 ERA any day of the week. That doesn't look like you just saying Freddy's had a better career than Vazquez.

Fernando Vina is an idiot. His prediction for the rest of the season is that JD Drew is going to lead the league in homers. NO FERNANDO

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) Well, I meant as a general rule, not at this very moment. And who knows, I was still pretty shocked they signed Loaiza again. After that, how could anyone make the claim that we aren't still looking at the scrap heap? This is true, but I have to imagine that they are hoping for Loaiza to just eat some innings during August and as a long man out of the bullpen, performance be damned. -
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) Oh, and I'd take Freddy's 4.09 career ERA over Vazquez's Montreal-NL-inflated career 4.29 ERA any day of the week. Yeah I highly doubt Freddy's a 4.09 pitcher anymore. Maybe 5.09. You go right ahead and take Freddy.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 05:46 PM) SI's Verducci has the omnipotent being we have patrolling LF at the top of his MVP list for the first half. Quentin is half man, half god, half beast, and now half MVP

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) I think there are several possibilities. Either you can just shut Danks down and put him on the DL for a couple weeks just to keep him fresh (Just call it "Tightness"), you can just have him skip a couple starts (This is what Detroit did with Verlander in 06) or you can basically give him September off when the rosters expand and Broadway and Loaiza come back up. Again, the 160 innings thing is just a rule of thumb, some pitchers are able to add more than 30 innings in a year and survive without injury, but it just seems to be asking for so much trouble (See: Gallardo) that I really hope they don't push him too far beyond that. Gallardo tore his ACL And Vazquez is far and away a superior pitcher to Garcia, but if you didn't expect that from me, you don't know me.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) We all know he would be a guy the Sox would be looking into if he was in another organization having these problems right now... I agree with the general point you are trying to make that MacDougal has a scrap of value and the Sox could very easily "cash" in on that if they really wanted to. Probably a dude who's an organizational player, but they could get something for him regardless. However, the above quote I'll disagree with, especially because the pen is as good as it is. If it were struggling and the Sox were contending, perhaps I'd believe it, but not right now. -
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) wite might get his wish. Crede might end the season as a 40/40 player. so long as I get my other wish of Crede in a different uniform next year, that'd be just fine my me.

Well, the Twins made it interesting with back to back 1 out singles, but Casilla flew out to CF and Mauer grounded out to Renteria. Tigers win 5-4, Sox 2.5 games up.
-
Zumaya's stuff looks a little mediocre...he can still run the fastball up there, but its at about 95-98 rather than 99-102. And the only breaking ball I've seen him throw he ung right over the middle of the plate

BUT THOME SUCKS
-
Tigers take a 5-4 lead with 2 runs in the 8th off of Guerrier. I don't really care about a sweep, I'm more or less just hoping that the two teams split the rest of their series and the Sox keep winning. If the Sox can go into the ASB with say a 4-5 game lead, you are feeling pretty comfortable.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 08:05 PM) Reminds me of that scene in Road Trip. What am I gonna do, cut it off?
-
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 07:41 AM) IIRC, the Sox are 4-20 when they do NOT hit a homerun You can blame that one on Danks if not obvious enough, maybe we can blame Dubee a bit too.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 29, 2008 -> 01:59 AM) anyone gotten GH Aerosmith yet? if so, is it basically the same as GH3 but different songs? uh, it's annoying. Hammer-ons and pull-offs don't work as easily as they did in GH3 and unless you like Aerosmith and similar music, it kinda sucks I'm gonna keep playing it, but I think they should have chosen a different artist first...like Metallica...

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 01:11 AM) Any chance we could trade Thome and maybe Fields for Chone. That would be the only way to make the team any better You are joking right? Thome AND Fields for Chone f***ing Figgins? You're fistf***ing me in my ass, right? Because that would be among the absolute worst moves the White Sox could make...it doesn't even make sense! I mean, for Christ's sake, let's get real here folks...you want to trade potentially 70 homers from next year's lineup for a guy that hits for a little bit of average and steals a few bases. That's 70 guaranteed runs that you might not get at all out of Figgins, and he's paying 3B. I really hate how this site becomes obsessed with certain players and then won't let those fascinations go, and will even go to great lengths to attempt to "acquire" those players. Trading Thome AND Fields for a solid but overrated hitter...what else is new? -
I could quite easily see Beckham as the 3Bman of the future, though I guess I never really saw how strong his arm was during the CWS. I also don't see Josh Fields in the organization past this calendar year, assuming the Sox can get some solid value out of him.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 29, 2008 -> 02:15 PM) I can't imagine listening to talk shows in Chicago after a Sox loss. It's bad enough on here. I can't imagine a mad, passionate fan saying the stuff that sometimes looks dumb a day later when we win. I'd say the fans on here are far more passionate than those that call into radio stations.

It would be nice if people could look into stats a bit more and find out why some of these guys have bad overall season numbers...it's generally because they were absolutely horrendous in April and/or May. June has been good to the White Sox, outside of like two series. As for a move, the only move I'd make would be one to shore up the bench...perhaps 2 moves to shore up the bench. I'd get rid of Russell and Ozuna by the end of the season and add to hitters to the bench, though I'm not sure as to who exactly I would add. -
Generally, if Joe Morgan says something, I literally believe the exact opposite of what he is saying to be true. He doesn't feel that walks at the top of the order are a good thing and he's rather have someone up there because he's fast. He said Carlos Guillen was going to be a gold glove 1Bman (and I'm pretty sure he made an error that night) and the next week he'd been moved over to 3B. So if he says the Sox bullpen is one of the best ever, am I to believe that it is one of the worst ever? I guess Joe Morgan might be sort of right occasionally, because, while one of the best ever is a bold statement at this time, it has been the best bullpen in the league (just an assumption, but I think it's a safe one). Thanks Joe Morgan.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Jun 29, 2008 -> 12:53 PM) But he definitely isnt worth the package of players that you suggested in trying to aquire him. I do think Beltre could definitely still be a great offensive player especially if team is in playoff contention, contract year, and in our park... but given his performance in Seattle he should be worth very very little. Right, hence my previous post
