  1. QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 01:42 AM) Wouldn't any team trading for dye have to consider it as dye and two picks considering dye's impending type A status at the end of the year? 2010 there is a mutual option for $12 mill. The two picks would come in 2011 if at all. JD might not be worth the $13 mill or so he'd prob. get in arb. in 2011.
  2. If the sox traded Dye for Figgins, it wouldn't be a straight swap. At minimum, it would be Dye for Figgins + 2 draft picks, as he'd be offered arb. with a reasonable 2009 salary increase from his $4.75 mill he made in 2008. Re-signing Figgins wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, either. You also factor in what the sox could do with the salary savings, such as Signing the Cuban SP Yadel Marti. Does Marti + Figgins = Dye?
  3. A new article in the Trib from an AP writer. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/sns-a...0,4477374.story Most interesting: *Young's 5 yr deal is worth $62 mill, after taking into account bonus and deferred money; Which makes his contract $12.4 mill a yr; *The Rangers plan on having Blalock be DH, so they'd be looking for someone to play 3b;
  4. I think the question moving forward is, would the Sox want a bat like Young for DH? Seeing how he's mostly hit #2, it's not a stretch that he could move to hit leadoff. He'd most likely see most of his AB's in 2009 at 2b or SS, and be DH vs LHP [some 30-40 games]. Yet for 2010-2013, he could move to DH as Thome moves on. Who knows if a deal could get done. But I could definitely see the benefit of having Young's bat in the sox lineup for a few years.
  5. If reports are true that the Sox asked about Roberts, that should make Hudson a possibility. Getting Hudson at a discount, due to durability concerns, on a short term deal [2 yrs at a bigger price with a 3rd yr team option w/ a buyout] might make more sense than trading a #3 SP. The sox would still have Getz / Lillibridge for 2b should Hudson go down--something other potential suitors for Hudson may not have. Hudson isn't the player Roberts is. But it would take less to acquire him. Couple the signing of Hudson with a Dye for Bailey trade, you'd have an OF of Owens in LF, Anderson in CF, and Q in RF. You still leave open the possibility of adding another OF [such as Abreu on a short term deal] of go with the three guys the sox say they want to give a chance-Fields, Anderson and Owens. One strike against signing Hudson to even a short term deal is that he's a Type A free agent and he'd cost picks. The only other Type A from Arizona is Juan Cruz. I'm not sure if it matters who signs Cruz, if it would affect the compensation of the Sox.
  6. QUOTE (scenario @ Jan 3, 2009 -> 08:05 PM) So... who would we rather have? Floyd + one year of Dye... or Bailey + one year of Roberts. It should read Floyd + one year of Dye... or Bailey + 1 year of Roberts + 2 draft picks
  7. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 3, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) Im guessing if this Roberts deal talks is true than the Dye for Bailey deal HAS to be alive. Because if Floyd leaves, we have a rotation of: Buerhle, Danks, Marquez, Broadway, Richard/Poreda and that my friends is horrendous! I agree. The sox should get as many SP's with upside as they can to compete for spots. Bailey fits the bill rather nicely.
  8. I could see the Sox adding Lillibridge [less likely as he's more versatile] or Getz to a deal, with the O's adding say a AA or AAA SP. You have to factor in that the sox will get two draft picks, even if Roberts leaves after this season, as he'll definitely be offered arb. with his low 2009 salary. Garret Olson is an arm that could be penciled into the rotation. He hasn't had success in the bigs but he's dominated in the minors. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/O/Garrett-Olson.shtml Here's an excerpt from Baseball America's 2006 Prospect Handbook: "He pitched in the low 90's more consistently and also showed a power curveball tha runs away from LH's. All of his pitches have so much life that it's hard for hitters to square the ball". Dealing Floyd, another parallel would seem to be the Garza-Delmon Young deal. You'd think the sox could get a young, semi proven position player locked up for a few years, in return for Floyd, that might be better than a Roberts deal. Granted, Roberts would probably help the sox more in 2009, than another acquisition.
  9. It would take very little talent to acquire Jones. The question is would he be needed on the sox. If the Sox acquired Roberts, I'd be very content having Anderson man CF. Anderson could outperfrom Jones for a fraction of the cost.
  10. If the Sox are looking into trading Gavin, or listening intently, it must be like a BMac deal, in that Gavin might not be a great fit in the Cell going forward. Floyd did have a big Fb rate GB/FB= .70 and gave up 30 HR's. If something did go down, I'd expect another solid SP coming back in another deal. I could see both Dye and PK going.
  11. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jan 3, 2009 -> 02:58 AM) Kenny's had his eye on Roberts before. I hope he lands him Why are Danks and Floyd mentioned in the same breath as Buehrle in terms of being "solid" or a proven commodity. "Stuff" or draft positions be damned, they've only had 1 good year. I'm not saying they should be moved as they'll be bad, but I still considered then unknowns for next year, especially Gavin considering the Sox's lack of options with him. Someone mentioned Cliff Lee, but the Sox won't have the opportunity to send Gavin to AAA to work on something. Very good point.
  12. Lillibridge made the Pac 10 All Conference as an OF for his freshman and sophomore years.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 07:31 PM) Any chance at Lillbridge ending up in CF instead of Owens? If Lillibridge can hit like he has in the past, the sox will make room for him.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 12:27 PM) The irony is that they're looking to trade Rowand (among others) in order to bring Manny Ramirez on board, largely because Rowand is one of their more expensive players now. Aaron has never been able to find either a guaranteed starting position or a team he can get really comfortable with for 3-5 years, for whatever reason. He's one of those players like DeJesus with the Royals that's borderline really good, but certainly not the pretty good you pay $10+ million per season to acquire. Rowand has one of those contracts that will be next to impossible to unload.
  15. On Major League Trade Rumors, during the Live chat today, Tim Dierkes mentioned a few times that he thought Dye would be traded. http://www.coveritlive.com/index2.php?opti...50&replay=y 2:48 [Comment From Tyler] Who do you see the Reds adding to the Outfield before the season. Also, is Alex Gonzalez ever going to be healthy again to play SS for the Reds? 2:49 They seem to be cautiously penciling Gonzalez in as the opening day SS. I can see the Dye talks being reignited. 2:52 [Comment From The Baseball King] Where do you think Giambi will wind up? And do you think Dye will be traded? 2:53 Oakland or TB. I do think Dye will be dealt. 2:57 [Comment From Jordan Anderson] Who do you see the White Sox trading/signing....the market out there is really good but ken williams is just a damn peckerhead!!!! hope u can answer my question thanks 2:58 Oops I didnt mean to post that, reading the whole thing. 2:58 Anyway you have a great GM in KW. He operates away from the media. I expect some kind of starter to be added and can def. see a Dye trade.
  16. http://thekingdomofbaseball.proboards82.co...=418&page=2 From the sounds of this article, Noel Arguelles was supposed to be ready for a MLB team to sign in November. I bet it takes awhile for the two most recent defectors to be available.
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 03:34 PM) Dye could be 1st base, and he's a Bay area guy. Sabean would get major popularity points for trading for him. I guess that Dye playing 1b wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for the Giants. Anything to add the power bat. Yet having Dye learn to play 1b at his age is a stretch. I still think PK makes more sense, with the Giants crowded OF.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) I still say that Dye would be a good fit in SF. The Giants have 4 OFers though. Lewis, Schierholtz, Rowand and Winn. Rowand isn't going anywhere, maybe Winn. Yet Winn gives the Giants the best chance of winning this year. Schierholtz hits for power and avg. and is the youngest of the bunch at 24.
  19. QUOTE (nysoxfan @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) Interesting possibility. Would Paulie agree to go to the Giants? He is close to Aaron Rowand--think they have the same agent. San Fran has been down on Matt Cain. Would love to get him in an extended deal. Longshot, but KW has pulled off miracles in the past. Welcome to Soxtalk! I'd forget about getting Cain. I would think PK would agree if presented a deal. He'd still have his no trade rights, and could stay in SF for the next two years, being closer to home. The Giants plan on contending.
  20. Getting Fred Lewis [as part of a package, not straight up] could solve the sox need for a leadoff hitter. Though he's 28, he did hit .282/.351/.440 in over 400 ab's last year-hitting mostly in the #1 spot, and getting 21 sb's. He does play CF, though he's played mostly in LF. Not sure what his defense is like, though he did have like 10 OF assists last year to go with 8 errors.
  21. The Giants are in great need of a power hitting 1b man like Konerko, much more than the Angels. They have few big bats and could use his HR power. Right now the only spots to add a bat for them would be 3B and 1B [though it looks like 3b could go to their LH hitting, 22 yr old Pablo Sandoval-who also can play 1b and C]. They have two other 1b men [bowker and Ishikawa], though they look like journeymen w/o power. I know Crede has been mentioned as a possibility for them at 3b. But he's a big injury risk, and the Giants could use a solid bat that they can count on. Even with PK's down years, he's still been able to hit his HR's. I don't know who or what the Giants have that the Sox could use in return. Jonathan Sanchez doesn't excite me. I'm not sure of their position prospects. The Giants do play in Scottsdale for spring training, where PK lives. Would he agree to a deal to play on the west coast? And could the sox get enough in return?
  22. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 09:22 AM) Garret Anderson has not been in Dye's league as a hitter since 2003. The whole reason the Angels' rumors have surfaced is that they are looking to add an impact bat. Look at their lineup. It was pretty weak this year... in the bottom half of the AL in RBIs and homeruns; and 2nd to last in doubles. The way things stand they might be getting weak production out of 3 key positions this year... 3B; 1B; and DH. So, I'm not suggesting we trade either Paulie or Dye out there, but either of them would fill holes the Angels need to address. Vlad will see a lot of time at DH this year. Rivera will see more time in RF. I still don't see them trading Figgins. He fits the Angels needs for leadoff wtih his getting on base and 3b well enough. Dye doesn't seem a good fit for them. If he hit lefthanded maybe, or could play 1b, but he doesn't. The key is 1b for them. Can they get someone better than Pk for 1B? I haven't heard many names that would be better for them than PK-esp. for HR and RBI's.
  23. With the Blue Jays having money trouble, Overbay and his $7 mill. salary could be available. Esp. if they are shopping Wells. But I think if the Angels do trade for PK, Morales would probably be part of any deal. With PK signed for 2 more years, Morales would have little value to them sitting on the bench.
  24. Not much new, except that the Angels appear to want Fuentes. Says the Angels won't go after Peavy, as the Padres demands for young pitching is too high; that the OF is set with Rivera re-signed. With few free agents at 1b, Konerko has to look decent to them, as 1b is one of the only spots for the Angels to upgrade. Not sure if there are other 1bmen out there available via trade for them to target. The Angels have to make some moves that would make them better [or get near to their 2008 team]. Even if they sign Fuentes, Krod and Texiera leaving makes them worse for 2009. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb...story?track=rss
  25. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 03:43 PM) I don't think it was his "rationale" for why Marquez won't be a good major leaguer. I think it was more to show how comparing Marquez to Danks, Floyd, and Garland is silly. All were far better prospects. Marquez was a supplemental 1st round pick who threw like a 1st round pick all through the minors until last year. Not all high draft picks turn out well. Not all low draft picks are scrubs. The other group that Marquez was compared to [Masset, Grilli and Glover] did not perform. IMO, based on potential and performance so far, Marquez is much closer to Danks, et al than Masset, et al.
