"I don't know what's changed — and I've said it to him in year's past. Not in any manner than just joking around for the fact that he called himself Jackie Robinson. If something has changed from that, my meaning of that — has not any term trying to be racist by any fact of the matter. It was just off of an interview of what he called himself. https://sports.yahoo.com/yankees-white-sox-benches-clear-after-josh-donaldson-calls-tim-anderson-jackie-robinson-223254927.html It's obviously different bringing it up in a joking manner in pre-game...like rolling your eyes and saying now you're comparing yourself to Jackie Robinson when the two time periods are so different (or making fun of Pete Rose 3000 hits Madrigal). Compared to relentless taunting in game, "Jackie" comes across in the same way boy or the N-word would because it's another version of a code word...no different than "Let's Go Brandon!" Is that also a joke, or simply a way to disrespect someone without crossing some kind of societal etiquette line of seeming "inside joke" politeness? Two sides of the same coin. -

"He just made a disrespectful comment," Anderson said. "Basically he was trying to call me Jackie Robinson. 'What's up, Jackie?' I don't play like that. I don't really play at all. I wasn't really going to bother nobody today, but he made the comment and you know it was disrespectful and I don't think it was called for. It was unnecessary." Full quote. Now #2 "headline" story at ESPN. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33959777/comment-new-york-yankees-josh-donaldson-chicago-white-sox-star-tim-anderson-called-racist -

"Jackie" is most assuredly not going to replace "OK Boomer" as a put down at SoxTalk. At least I hope not for the sake of our minority posters. -
Twins 17-1 when scoring 4+ runs. 4.5 ties biggest division lead of the season. +30 vs. -29 in terms of RS/RA compared to White Sox. No homers in their last five wins or games, something like that. White Sox 2.5 games behind Toronto in WC race with nobody yet between them. Indians 3 back.

Standing up for wanting to be treated with dignity and respect as a POC is not about cancel culture. If anything the hidden/insidious cancel culture backlash will try to bury this as quickly as possible and likely no suspension will come of it. Rob Manfred may or may not advise the Yankees to sit Donaldson tmrw. It is 100% guaranteed not to turn into another Trevor Bauer hot potato... How Donaldson reacts to all that noise around him, his teammates' sport or lack thereof, his manager's stance, will all be quite telling. -

Calling him Jackie over and over again in the same game. Not just once. Once could be a joke, maybe. That was clearly taunting. -

That's certainly not how one can interpret a significant number of responses in these threads... -

CHICAGO -- When White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson and new second baseman Josh Harrison take the field together on Jackie Robinson Day on Friday, they will be the only Black double-play combination in baseball. "You don't see that every day," Anderson said recently. "There's a lot of young kids that look up to us on the South Side. I think it's only right to live our story through baseball and play the way that we do. https://abc7chicago.com/sports/how-mlbs-only-black-double-play-combo-is-passing-on-jackie-robinso/11743912/ -

Obviously he can't make the exact same far-ranging societal changes as Robinson, Doby, Monte Irvin, Minoso, Satchel Paige...it's just an analogy for the modern era and the consistently falling number of African Americans playing major league baseball over the last thirty years or so. -

Everything. Tim Anderson represents everything traditionalists hate about baseball. Almost all of that anger is focused on black and Hispanic players. Is Bryce Harper saying similar things since he was in high school and being presented as the new cool image of baseball any different? The very future of the sport, we were bombarded with over and over again in advertising by Nike. -

So if you are a white person and say something that a black person feels is racist or insulting and your reaction is just shrug it off as a joke...do you essentially have a right to take away their reaction of being angered or upset? Why/how? -

That was the White Sox marketing slogan for an entire season. Tatis, Jr., has been put forward by MLB in that group with Soto, Bryce Harper, Vladdy Jr., Acuna. More flamboyant. Bat flips. Making the game more fun for young people and not the boring drag it is for many. -

“It’s always the Latin or the Caribbean ball players who are seen as flashy and who have to respect the game,” says Varela. “You never hear about it with Mike Trout or other people, but it’s when it comes to the ‘flashy’ Dominicans, right? All of the sudden [they’re] causing problems. They’re ruining baseball. They’re ruining tradition.” The challenging of tradition in the MLB aligns with the global challenging of structural racism. Systems, norms, values, and narratives are being criticized and reimagined in every capacity. “The Jackie Robinson story, as great as it is...it’s sort of like Major League Baseball saying, ‘I have Black friends,’” says Varela. “You know what I mean? It’s like, ‘Oh no, but we integrated way back in the day.’ There’s so many issues now of inequality and it comes to violence against Black bodies and issues of respect and issues of dignity.” https://globalsportmatters.com/listen/2020/08/22/the-huddle-baseballs-unwritten-rules-roberto-clemente/ -

Not what he said...at all. Read the entire story for context. He wasn't saying he was going to make the Hall of Fame as a player or anything like that. https://sports.yahoo.com/tim-anderson-compares-himself-to-jackie-robinson-slams-mlb-offices-on-diversity-054429037.html Anderson is decidedly new school. And he told SI that his approach is blazing a new path, comparing himself to an icon of American sports progress. “I kind of feel like today’s Jackie Robinson,” Anderson said. “That’s huge to say. But it’s cool, man, because he changed the game, and I feel like I’m getting to a point to where I need to change the game.” Shouldn't we also blame the White Sox PR team for pushing that "change the game" tagline on Tim? -

https://nypost.com/2022/05/21/white-sox-accuse-yankees-josh-donaldson-of-racial-comment/ The most important point is that it happened multiple times in the game...that's taunting, not joking. Would it be funny if Tim kept on calling him Ty Cobb? I think not. -

“He just made a disrespectful comment. He was trying to call me Jackie Robinson, ‘What’s up Jackie?’ ” Anderson, who is Black, said. “I don’t play like that. … That happened the first time he got on, and I let it go that time, and it happened again. It’s just uncalled for.” Later, Anderson said: “I’ll never sleep this off.” Way to take the wrong side. He didn't say it comparing himself as a player, but that he was attempting to inspire the next generation of African American ballplayers as one of a diminishing number in the big leagues...same way 75% of Hispanic players today cite inspiration of Clemente on and off the field. -

manor, lol? He’ll be heading to the Shady Hills Retirement Manor if Kopech decides to go head hunting. Don’t think he will do much more than throw behind him and get warned or thrown out. But at least we have so many off days to rest the pen if Kopech does get tossed. -

No. They are unlikely to cause an open rift in the clubhouse when they are running away with the division. -

Especially since the last game/s between them in the regular season. But then some will read that action as a tacit admission of guilt on the part of the Yankees. They might double down in defending him. It's going to be interesting to see how they try to wiggle out of it. -

If they play him in the DH it's practically inviting a retaliation from the Sox/LaRussa and a bench clearing brawl. The game would also start with both starting pitchers warned in all likelihood. -

Buxton is definitely going to be one of the first players they ask to comment since they were teammates...if he wants to weigh in to defuse or further fan the flames.
