What would be interesting to see is where that “lost” 30% would be going? Lost to GOP?, unlikely but but not impossible to fathom. In other words, how many of respondents are being mostly affected or influenced by the events of last week...but would be likely to vote for Trump, or a Trump family member or surrogate again in the future? How many are actually sticking with Trump but embarrassed to be on his side still after Wednesday due to the nature of polling by phone vs. more impersonal methods that preserve anonymity? How many are even MORE strongly bonded to him? If there was a theoretical presidential election coming up in just 1-2 years instead of 4, who would they be supporting as the GOP nominee against a generic Dem candidate? How many will never support a Trump again, period?

That's exactly what they are doing here in China...putting at least one or two Communist Party officials on the boards of major corporations like Alibaba, Ten Cent, Baidu and Huawei. Well, that works in one sense...showing ultimately who's boss. On the other hand, it doesn't work very well if your goal is to have the biggest economy in the world by 2028, when you neuter/regulate/control your country's leading companies. In theory, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the US serves a similar purpose, as a cross-check or monitor of corporate activity, although oftentimes it's more symbolic rather than powerful in a practical sense. Employee-owned, like Hy-Vee Food Stores, tends to work better...but, for massive MNC's, the majority of shareholders at the lower level are only going to comprise something like 5-10% of outstanding shares (while 80% of total owner stakes) simply because the nature of IPO's and the ways in which start-ups are financed/capitalized.

Not yet, will have to check it out. https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/10/politics/doug-jensen-capitol-hill-police-officer/index.html Of course, THIS idiot had to be from Iowa. At least he didn't know where the main Senate doors were, thankfully...when he was leading the mob up the stairs after the lone black US Capitol officer (while of course sporting a qAnon shirt.) According to the FBI and the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Jensen faces five federal charges -- of unlawfully entering the Capitol, disrupting government business, violent entry, parading in a Capitol building and blocking law enforcement during the riot.

You can look at here in China or Singapore, very strong, authoritative governments. They both are much closer to capitalism than socialism/communism as we think of the USSR 1917-1989 Leninist/Marxist/Engels version. The levels of inequality and corruption are just as high in China and Singapore, if not higher than the US. Wealth gap/inequality, roughly the same...if anything, rising after the pandemic as there were NO programs from the government to assist, let alone bail out, small businesses or assist renters. Capitalism was always seen, at least historically, as going together with the American, Western European liberal democracy. Those countries are largely becoming more "socialist" with their health care systems, if you look at Canada, NHS in UK, France, Germany and Finland/Denway/Norway/Sweden, or Australia/NZ. Very few 1st world countries have a solution for retirement that doesn't heavily tax public treasuries or rely on subsidies from employers. As China's population grows older and older, it's going to be an increasingly higher percentage of the budget, to the point where China is going to be unsuccessfully dealing with both the Middle Income (Thucydides) Trap and a lack of young people (declining birth rates just like Japan and South Korea) to replace the aging population (and China has never been a big advocate of mass immigration for numerous reasons too long to go into). Capitalism is GREAT for moving a country from developing to 2nd world...and it's great for moving masses of people out of poverty relatively quickly, but the jury's still out on sustainability, especially from an environmental standpoint. Thomas Picketty's last two books on this topic are both very informative, and must-reading for anyone interested in economics, IMO. If we did that, or had a mass public hanging like Abraham Lincoln's plotters...we'd only be making permanently martyrs out of all those people. A lifetime of obscurity in prison would do the trick. That said, I think everyone who hasn't seen The Trial of the Chicago 7 yet would have a slightly different viewpoint after watching that film and comparing/contrasting to current events. Because there was certainly no love lost between those in the park and law enforcement back in 1968. It was more of a "massacre" like Trump wanted to happen outside of Lafayette Park and in front of the Episcopal church this past summer.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2003/mar/21/usa.davidpallister There will never be any conclusive way to objectively prove people are fascists OR whatever the opposite of that is...whether you think it's BLM/Antifa or you believe it's a false equivalency. It's back to the main point, if it can be proven that the leaders in between Trump and the actual protesters (whether state leaders, like the West Virginia state rep who already resigned, Derrick Evans I think was his name)...have communicated in any way to make that crowd of 25,000 believe they could overthrow the election results and/or kidnap/assassinate VP Pence? We have the those 6-7 senators most directly involved, roughly 130-140 GOP representatives... The big question is how to separate the real plotters/organizers and those who carried out their wishes and might or likely didn't intend to find themselves in the situations they found themselves which will likely have lifelong career and personal consequences.

If anything goes wrong Sunday around the country, there better not to be any more excuses about not being prepared... especially with the inauguration three days later. Thankfully, the midweek nature of the event makes it more inaccessible to the general public.

Now we're underestimating and looking down on them... which is 50% of the reason they felt an allegiance to Trump's movement in the first place? Not being respected by the press, coastal elites, politicians, Hollywood, etc. Silenced by cancel culture and misunderstood/misjudged/painted unfairly with a racist brush. It's not like you would find thousands of brilliant thinkers aligned with Hitler, Franco or Mussolini in the 20s and 30s but there were enough to give it growing legitimacy or credibility.

Munchel has been charged with "one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds," according to the U.S. Attorney. Does anyone believe a guy dressed in tactical military gear and armed with plastic zip restraints will be stopped by charges like that? https://www.yahoo.com/gma/capitol-riot-suspects-allegedly-brought-221100302.html

Sen. Joe McCarthy eventually was discredited. The Communist witch hunts might be the closest parallel to this current phenomenon. We also survived major assassinations, numerous cities burning in race riots/protests, Vietnam and Watergate in the 60s and early 70s. America is pretty darned resilient, but staring into the abyss and escaping due largely to pure luck, having barely passed the stress test as a country, hardly means this is all over.

Except Greg was 90-95% in fear of left wing protesters....5-10% convinced American carnage would end in another Civil War/massive conflagration.
-
Luckily, Trump is at an age and health status and anger/paranoia level where hanging around another decade like Hitler managed after the Beer Hall Putsch seems highly unlikely...but there’s no shortage of candidates like Pompeo, Hawley, Cruz (who is ten times smarter than Trump) and Don Jr., etc. to take up that mantle.

Do you honestly believe the majority of police officers and active duty military are really on Biden’s side? We spent days this week speculating about how many were actually helping the rioters or, at best, benign indifference. As for coups and the military/industrial complex, I guess it depends on your version of 11/22/63 events.
-
The real kicker would be if Trump tries to charge Pence for going around him in the chain of command...simply to take the focus away from himself. What happens then?
-
We’re back to Designated Survivor storylines...but, it feels at least like a 50/50 possibility Biden would stand down like Gore did in 2000 if Trump still had the nuclear codes or control of and/or allegiance from at least half the US military.

By this logic, they would have been heroes had they succeeded? The Founding Fathers are only the good guys because they won the Revolutionary War? They all would have been hung had the British won. The worst thing happening to these guys is losing their jobs or getting outed on the Internet , so far.

But the key point here is McVeigh wasn’t attempting to subvert the results of an election or assassinate Clinton. Nobody would argue that it was an attempt to overthrow the government. And the police/ATF/FBI weren’t exactly cooperating with those groups to help them carry out their stated goals. Ruby Ridge, Waco, OKC and Columbine were birds of a completely different feather. Could we apply sedition/treason there?
-
Texsox, if VP Pence was taken hostage or, God forbid, murdered/lynched...would we still be saying, well, what about that Bernie Sanders fanatic who shot up the Republican softball game?

I have pretty much never heard that said about BLM or Antifa in the last 4-5 years. Portland riots pretty much scared Greg off the ''internets."

Back to two sides, again. The Twitter ban might work over the short term, but the polarization is not going to simply melt away before 2024. In fact, the disparity between lower middle class and poor whites and the 1% is only going to be exacerbated by the Covid-19 wealth redistribution which is still ongoing. And the constant buzzword will be socialism despite virtually nobody calling Trump that for adding nearly $6 trillion to the deficit. Socialism for Iowa farmers and market intervention in the form of subsidies to offset the trade war were perfectly fine with Trump/Ernst voters there. It's only socialism when those benefits go to black and brown people, illegal immigrants/DACA recipients or even women.

But what percentage of eligible American voters or those who actually voted for Trump in 2016/20 are represented in that 22%? Normally, we’re lucky to get 50-55% of eligible voters to cast ballots. This year, 154 million (votes) still represents less than half the US population. At any rate, there’s undoubtedly a high correlation between followers and voters in his case. If anything, the most important point is free/instantaneous communication with millions for free. Strip away Twitter and FB, he wouldn’t have had a prayer to win in 2016. Let’s not forget those years before he officially announced in 2015 that he was building up his base, going back to the Birther controversy.

Sure, but how often do the networks televise WH press conferences or speeches? The Covid-19 daily press briefings probably added up to more airtime than the last 4-5 presidents combined. The difference is society is so mobile and 24 hour news oriented that there's not an obvious secondary option to reach a huge mass of individuals on a daily basis, instantly.
-
Ummmm...quote from Suze Orman? It sounds almost Hitlerian when you consider the redistribution is away from minorities/women and towards upper class whites. If you could prove it was going more towards those under 35, that would be at least one positive spin for the country, notwithstanding the completely unnecessary nature of inflicting most of this on ourselves.
