  1. Brewers have Shaw, Arcia off a promising offseason....Twins have never given this type of deal out, other than to homegrown hero Mauer, and it wiped out two GM’s careers in many ways.
  2. And Rendon. And Bogaerts. And, just for a twist, Josh Donaldson has a career resurgence and puts up All-Star numbers.
  3. https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-cubs-ricketts-family-leaked-emails-20181219-story.html Thought this was interesting... Media requests must go through the Cubs public relations. Avoid all media contacts where possible if not through the Cubs (i.e. ambush interviews). — Can talk to the media about other topics besides baseball. — Stick to talking points if trapped in an unschedule (sic) interview. — Bring a World Series to Chicago. — Save Wrigley Field. — Be a good neighbor. — We are excited to be the owners. — Never talk about players or Jim Hendry. I can attest the Rickettses generally followed their “talking points,” including not talking about Hendry, who was on the hot seat as general manager. Chairman Tom Ricketts proved quite adept at avoiding ambush interviews when beat writers waited for him outside conference rooms at various owners meetings. Somehow he would always find a secret exit.

  5. Sri Racha is no longer a popular source.
  6. Machado's Magnets! Although I'm still going with Machado's Muchachos for now.
  7. Pudge Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Piazza immediately come to mind...
  8. That's good for Iowa, too. They had in some ways an equally important win at 0-6 PSU without Tyler Cook, especially after losing by 24 points last year in State College to a very pedestrian team. Three weeks ago, it looked like Iowa was dead in the water, and yet they're 15-3. Two months ago, I would have said they were a lock for the Round of 32, but then the reality of Oregon not actually being a #13 team in the country when Iowa beat them in MSG set in. The B10 has so much parity after you get past Michigan and MSU. Look at Minnesota losing at Illinois, for example. If Iowa doesn't get Cook back this weekend, they could easily lose at home to Illinois, then they have another hellacious four game stretch (started WI, @ MSU, @ Purdue). As far as the B12 goes, last year OU and WVU were so much better, KSU hasn't exactly come together like predicated coming out of last season's run...it seemed almost every team could win against any other conference team on their home court.
  9. A full week? C'mon! You should be used to that by now, it's not 2013 anymore.
  10. Of course, that's PRECISELY why many celebrities are entering the political arena, because their money and "authenticity" to tell it like it is creates an illusion that they're actually siding with the "everyman/woman" in society. It's a neat trick. Hahn most assuredly belongs in the world of corporate boardrooms, charity functions and the halls of Congress than pounding the pavement and kissing babies.
  11. Shooting guard for Iowa, Ricky.
  12. Will agree with this sentiment. Never did military service, but was in AmeriCorps for two years...it's not defined as a job, because you get a stipend and roughly (this was back in 97 and 1998) $5000 for university expenses per year. We boarded up drug/crack houses, did Habitat for Humanity projects, worked in a soup kitchen on a weekly basis, helped a food pantry take deliveries, I drove a 16 passenger van to take women from the domestic violence shelter and drug rehab to their doctor/dentist/job interviews (a pain in the ass to back up or turn around), coached lots of different sports, taught ESL students (mostly from Mexico) English, participated in lots of projects with high school and university students for things like MLK Day, etc. Never a boring day....you really got to see how fortunate you were growing up. Even though our salary was set at the official poverty amount (between $7000-8000 back then), it was the most rewarding two years of my life in many ways...because it was all about doing things for others. I was based in Kansas City, Kansas and then was an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow (Colin Powell initiative) working with high school and middle school students in developing service projects, bringing kids from all different backgrounds together and of course seeking out funds through grant-writing and local corporations (Hallmark, H&R Block, Kauffman Foundation, etc). In actuality, the scholarship money for those who do actual military service is set at a higher rate, and I never had a problem with that at all, although sometimes when it was getting to be early evening in KCK you felt like you were taking your life in your hands, haha. Still not the same as battlefield conditions by any stretch of the imagination.
  13. Some of the members of the sports media might want to look for jobs as "political spin doctors" with as many position reversals on who will end up signing where as we've seen in the last month...geez.
  14. Raymond Reddington could solve this impasse. Or Dembe.
  15. Lozano...Lozano...Lazarus?
  16. Since JR is in charge of the deal now, might as well shout at the wind or at least windmills.
  17. Seems that the number of thread views being greater than 2019 Sox attendance figure if neither player signs is a distinct possibility.
  18. The only comp to Pujols is going to be Mike Trout when he hits free agency at age 30 after the 2020 season...in terms of HoF numbers already before that final deal.
  19. Obviously to project their future values as somewhere between Steve Sax and Cory Snyder...
  20. This is probably why the White Sox as the favorite team of Iowans is down to about 5% of those surveyed...or maybe it’s the crappy radio signal now.
  21. Which will arrive first, the final GoT season or a Machado deal? Or Machado vs. another book from George R.R. Martin? “Spring is coming” doesn’t quite work as a tagline in mid-January. And SoxFest might be about as well attended as The Flock Of Seagulls reunion tour at this rate...
  22. If Paul didn’t get hurt last year, GSW was in real trouble. Otoh, the Warriors would have four in a row if not for Draymond’s suspension and Curry injury. The CLE win really helped to create the illusion of a fair-ish competition.
  23. Yeah, whatever a real legit offer would be here that they would actually have to consider carefully before rejecting...
  24. And that’s when the second guessing about “why not just offer him 7/$280 and make one final “best” offer after that...?” The theory will be that we gave other teams too much time on the sidelines to reconsider their options/positioning. If this strategy works AND saves money, it’s brilliant. Of course, if it eventually fails...not so much. Of course, the alternative is Machado or Harper never wanting to sign with the Sox unless there was no other choice...and assuming the risk to wait it out for the “bigger, better thing” to materialize, ultimately.
