  1. Reed was so close on Saturday to an epic career-defining blown save against the Sox if Konerko went deep twice in that game.
  2. Downs had a .367 BAA lhb'ers last year? That acquisition is more befuddling than Santos, really. And 11 career trips to the DL. Just didn't make any sense, and still doesn't.
  3. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) Johnson and Danish have plenty of ceiling, Danish especially. In this radar-gun-ruled world of pitching scouting (which is largely responsible for the rash of injuries), he'll likely be vastly underrated until he's dominating in the majors - but it's coming. The sun doesn't rise and set on the radar gun. He's going to be just fine. We shall see with Johnson. That will be the first test. But yeah, Carroll and Putnam have succeeded pitching mostly in the 80's. Dylan Axelrod, not so much.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:07 PM) Redick ... what a smart play. It can't be that hard to learn to pop a bunt that way. He should do that 80 percent of the time when the shift is on. The White Sox always accidentally pop bunts....90% of the time, it's not by plan, it's failure in execution, which is the only way they're rewarded for messing it up so badly it becomes a hit. How is Leury Garcia looking in CF so far?
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:07 PM) Well, isn't anything better than Nestor Molina? Still one of the strangest trades in Sox history. Yep, it ranks up there with the Zach Stewart acquisition and the wonderful package we received from the Yankees for Nick Swisher. Payback for Sirotka, lol.
  6. That's the second successful bunt at 3B tonight. Not sure if it was the right baseball play by Cespedes, though, he's paid to drive in runs with 2 outs. But if they give it to you, might as well take advantage until the defense/opposing coaching staff makes an adjustment.
  7. Fathom, do you still want Josh Reddick for RF? Going back to that Santos trade...
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:02 PM) No, but they laugh at our attendance Greg, that was a decade plus ago. The Red Sox, Rays, Mariners, Astros, Pirates, Cardinals...there are a SLEW of teams that are now known for even more quantitative than the original OPS/OBP fixation.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) This is a pitcher you need a lot of lefties to face, and if you look at the Sox lineup, 3 of the 5 lefties playing tonight have no business starting in a MLB lineup at this point of the season. Oh well, maybe they'll fight hard in the 9th again. DeAza, Garcia and Nieto resent that comment, lol. Hopefully it will spur them on to a great comeback. But not counting on it in Oakland. The more recent nightmares are related to Thornton and Santiago trying to close out games there.
  10. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:59 PM) I'm sorry but Chavez does not have that great of stuff. We are just bailing this guy guy out. That 2.32 ERA isn't a misprint. Jared Weaver could also dominate us, usually had "great" stuff in his secondary offerings, but wasn't anywhere close to a fireballer in recent years.
  11. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:27 PM) The Fernandez situation is sad, but almost predictable, imo. In watching his highlights recently, it appeared that his slider was a very stressful pitch and that he threw it a lot. Haven't found the stats as to the percentages of what he was throwing, but he was falling off the mound every time. I know very, very little about pitching mechanics, but I figured this wasn't a good thing. Almost posted about it a couple days ago - I guess I would have looked smart. But this sucks, and is bad for the game, obviously. Something (many things) needs to change about the way these kids are being brought along. In the meantime, more changeups, less sliders, Mr. Sale please. See Rodon/"The Franchise" 2006 Francisco Liriano
  12. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) I know a lot of the guys here love Bradnon McCarthy, but he's another guy who falls into that category. Gio Gonzalez is the exception...
  13. QUOTE (Jake @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:52 PM) Johnson and Danish have extremely high ceilings. Johnson has plus speed, good contact rates, high walk rates, a lot of glove potential, and has pretty nice power production thus far for a non-HR hitter. His ceiling is borderline first-tier 2B. Danish has an ace ceiling. There's a reason they said he has Jake Peavy stuff. Those players just happen to have pretty low floors, too. I would love to see Danish throwing 95-97/98 like Peavy in his absolute prime. But he's not anywhere close to that right now, is he? Mostly low 90's, 89-91/92, yes? Danish is closer to Zach Putnam right now than Cy Young/healthy Jake Peavy at his best in SD.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) Chavez has been awful his entire career. The A's pitching coach is a miracle worker making him into a useful starter. And a lot of their pitchers, away from Oakland (of course, you have the spacious park and dead outfield at night for most of the season)...none have gone on to that much success, guys like T.Ross/B.Anderson/Cahill, etc. Typical game in Oakland for the Sox. Snoozefest. It's good for putting fans to sleep, there's that.
  15. QUOTE (Dunt @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:48 PM) How has Abreu not adjusted to breaking balls low and away yet? Very few hitters can/do, when down in the count. If it was easy, then every MLB hitter would be at .300-.400.
  16. Abreu's K rate has dramatically increased, although is average is still "okay." Maybe he's getting away from that singles/line drive/opposite field stroke just a bit. It was due to happen with the amount of early success he's had. Viciedo is hitting almost exactly the same against RHP/LHP, fwiw. There were concerns in past seasons about his approach against RHP. He's not a platoon hitter, like Gillaspie threatens to be, or DeAza.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 12, 2014 -> 09:41 PM) I know, but at that stage of the game if you want to beat the A's on the road, you need to not strand the runner at third. That was one, key out. And predictably the A's plate two in the bottom of the fifth to take good command of the game. Gillaspie has hit the ball hard both times with RISP, yes? You can't really jump all over him. And it's not like Chavez's BAA against this season isn't way down in the .100's.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 12, 2014 -> 08:01 PM) At his highest, De Aza had a trade value of basically zero. I was referring to his first two seasons with the White Sox...not 2013/14.
  19. Three nicknames for Abreu. Pito, which comes from his favorite uncle. Oso, the Spanish word for bear. Jose Daniel.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 12, 2014 -> 07:19 PM) Because that didn't happen this year? It's every other year, I thought. Last one was 2013. I can't imagine not at least having it in Asia, where MLB is trying to develop the game. Amongst the Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese and Cuban national teams, to name just 4.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 12, 2014 -> 07:14 PM) So at this point the solution is to stop using pitchers, right? It might put an end to the World Baseball Classic, that's for sure.
  22. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/hal-bo...p;vkey=news_mlb Hal Bodley giving Francona credit for Cleveland's recent "turnaround" with the bullpen. Where's the article featuring Ventura, haha?
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 12, 2014 -> 06:35 PM) I'm sorry if this offends someone, but seriously suggesting that Jared Mitchell gets called up should be a bannable offense on this board. I didn't say it was a GOOD idea. Just that it would be more interesting to watch, from a fan's standpoint. The end. If they thought he had absolutely zero chance of ever contributing at the major league level, why wouldn't they just move on now? Do they really need AAAA filler so badly? With Charlotte's new stadium, the premium should be on giving them "winning" AAA/AAAA players if the guys aren't legit prospects being groomed by the organization. Charlotte has three consecutive sell-outs this weekend and came close on Monday.
  24. QUOTE (Brian @ May 12, 2014 -> 06:04 PM) Can Micah play OF? We might find out soon enough if Eaton keeps getting hurt. Or Semien. Which would be kind of crazy that you'd have to move your two best infield prospects to LF/CF simply due to embarrassing major league play in the outfield.
  25. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 12, 2014 -> 06:00 PM) I thought he was talking about Sierra? If Sierra could play CF, I'm sure he would be out there. As it is, he's not a very good corner OFer. Big arm, like Viciedo, but quite limited.
