**6/5 White Sox vs Tigers Game Thread**
caulfield12 replied to Brian's topic in 2015 Season in Review
This guy throws 86-90 so of course we struggle. Melky's on a pace for 12 doubles and 3 homers. Last year, 54 xb hits. Incredible. Baffling. -

KW: play is "embarassing" but team can still win ALC
caulfield12 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That's also partly a symptom of the lack of homegrown position players who've already bought into a system coming up together. Trust takes longer to develop in that scenario...in each other, and the manager. -
http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...open-al-central The key for him (Rodon) is getting to the slider in a strikeout count, as he currently lacks the fastball command to get ahead of hitters on a more consistent basis -- and thus the 22 walks in 34⅔ innings. Batters are hitting just .132 against the slider, whiffing 27 times in 63 plate appearances ending with that pitch. But they're hitting .368 against his fastball, with more walks than strikeouts.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 01:57 PM) I wonder would people rather hear Kenny's 50 cents on the dollar speach again, or this one? http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2015...s_poor_fans.php He will get a job with the Atlanta Hawks' marketing team for sure. Can easily transition from hating Hispanics to hating African-Americans. http://halohangout.com/2014/03/20/trout-pu...s-ticket-sales/ Similar situation to the White Sox...they entered last season having missed the playoffs four consecutive seasons. Even a disappointing playoff appearance didn't help this offseason. Yet the trend does not surprise Alvarado. He said the strength of the resale market — StubHub, Ticketmaster's Ticket Exchange, and similar services — means that fans do not have to buy or share season tickets to get a good seat. And, since the recession hit in 2008, fans have become increasingly interested in mini-plans rather than in buying a seat for all 81 games. He said the Angels are about even with last year in revenue from tickets and concessions. Group sales are up, and so are luxury suite rentals. Donated tickets — charities and civic groups buy blocks and give them to schools, military personnel and the like — are down. The Dodgers have capped season-ticket sales at 35,000. Alvarado said the Dodgers build that base in part by selling blocks of seats to brokers and resale outlets. "They've got a significantly larger wholesale business than we do," Alvarado said. "We choose not to go that model." http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la...0603-story.html Remember, this same team is bleeding fans like the White Sox post 2006... Had the best record in AL, MVP, playoff appearance last year, etc. They're not losing fans to the DOdgers, either.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) im considering that this is pretty much the norm for Rasmus and quite an aberration for Melky. Besides, your argument wasn't about cost, it was about production ROI is always implied in any conversation. It's easy to say signing Nelson Cruz would have been better...but not if you consider how likely he is to replicate those same numbers in 2018 or 2019.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) .238/.304/.490 .235/.278/.504 yea, massive difference there. Those two more walks make all the difference in the world You're not consdering the most important factor...their respective contracts. Rasmus has a 793 ops. We would have been elated to get that from Viciedo last year. Cabrera is one of the bottom five players in all of mlb at 540. 28 vs. over the hill/declining/no pop 30ish. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/pos.../true/minpa/125 Rasmus comes in at 17/29...only Suzuki, Ackley and Joyce are worse than Melky. Probably David DeJesus is the best "treading water" signing. The best thing you can say is we didnt sign Hanley Ramirez for lf, but the White Sox would have played him at third.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) Martinez has player in only 60% of the Tigers games and has an OPS of .578. If you think he is the difference in the season, you must think Tyler flowers is the savior for the Sox season as he has a higher OPS than Martinez. No, I meant in the Tigers not even making the playoffs...that being a signing we all questioned from the beginning due to his age and injury history, too much risk for the possible reward. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tige...treak/28511877/ Is the Tigers' season already on the brink?

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 09:52 AM) Was is Veeck that said "I'd rather trade a player one year early than one year late"? Quite a few front office people....hard to pinpoint just one. Brett Anderson is a name that nobody trusted this offseason but he would have been a better move since we would have controlled his rights multiple years, not given up any talent and corned the lefty pitching market. Rasmus would have been a better solution than Cabrera....younger, better defender, takes more walks and more pop. Not to mention Kendrys Morales going to the Royals and Victor Martinez staying might have decided the division. Free agency is always a crapshoot...especially for the White Sox.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 08:32 AM) Only two years ago, that would have been outstanding. We're always one or two years late. Dunn, Downs, Keppinger, Cabrera, LaRoche, dealing Alexei, Samardzija/selling low on Semien...
-
QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 07:13 AM) He's turned into Scott Downs. I'm still wondering why Robertson or Putnam weren't pitching in the 11th. Putnam dealing with hand/wrist injury and unavailable.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 5, 2015 -> 08:21 AM) Feliz, McCullers, Stassi, and Moran probably gets it done but Houston would never give that up. Yeah, they have to get a catcher. Tucker and Santana would be overkill. Moran, Stassi and a minor league pitcher wouldn't be enough...unless you could also get Tucker or Santana. Tucker could play of, dh or 1b next season. But Quintana hasn't been so dominant this year to necessitate giving up so much when they can also get Hamels or Cueto for a lot less talent. Or Samardzija.
-
Appel, Domingo Santana, Tucker, Moran....that would get it started. The problem is you've just blown another expensive hole in your rotation, and you can't count on another instant impact college pitcher at #8. There's no way Correa is going anywhere. The Cardinals are way ahead in their division and Garcia's recently returned.....they've got a prospect in lhp Marco Gonzales they're really high on, too. With Wacha, Lynn, Lackey, Martinez and Garcia...no need for Q really. They would offer Grichuk or Piscotty but they're not going to trade Martinez and outfielder for Quintana because it doesn't make either team clearly better. On the other hand, Hamels and money coming back for prospects makes more sense....as long as they hold onto Wacha and Martinez. Finally, the Heyward deal hasn't worked so that is going to causethem to be even more hesitant.

http://pro.boxoffice.com/featured_stories/...forecast-pixels Taking a big risk these days with Sandler anywhere near a project...but he probably has some Kevin James teflon left.
-
119 ab's and 43 gp for Montero so far....hasn't he also been on the DL? 762 ops the most productive numbers on the board since 2012.

The funny thing about that inning is that DeShields, Jr., hit .236 in AA last year (with a 700ish ops), basically skipped AAA and has the middle name Diaab. That's a whole lotta respect considering who Ventura had Jennings facing instead. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...ino-deshieldsjr. -

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 4, 2015 -> 10:29 PM) FWIW there is plenty Ventura can do to improve this team. First, stack all your decent/good hitters in a row. Eaton, Avi, Beck, Gillaspie, Abreu and maybe sprinke in some LaRoche. Melky Sanchez and Flowers should all see less at bats. I don't care how much you paid a motherf***er, this team needs to be shook up and bad. This is why Ventura should be fired. He has no idea how to make adjustments. Just the idea of calling Gillaspie and Beckham "good hitters" right now says all you need to about this season. Gordon, despite how good things look right now....is just an 0/12 away from .250. That said, he's definitely been one of the top 3 hitters on the team over the road trip, if not #1. -
He would have needed a lot more than the "minor surgical procedure" he was undergoing Thursday in all likelihood...probably coronary bypass.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2015 -> 10:23 PM) It's just a very bad team. Starting pitching has looked much better, but they are so bad in every other area of the game. When you have a lineup with 3-4 guys who should be batting 9th, it's going to be hard to score. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/wildcard.jsp On paper, it doesn't look so bad...at least fans can keep telling themselves that (especially those not subjected to all the bad White Sox games already this season). In reality, the odds of beating out 10 other teams for that 2nd wild card spot is about 1/1000. Any regression to mean from the offense is going to be cancelled out by the back end of our rotation, our "luck" of having four huge comeback victories already in the books, the dearth of quality relievers in the bullpen, the defense, fundamentals/execution and baserunning. -

Duke coming into this game really early. That's probably going to come back to bite Ventura, unless they simply misidentified Jennings. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 4, 2015 -> 08:32 PM) This is one of those 1-1 games you don't feel good about if you've watched a lot of Sox games the last 7-8 years. Even those tie games on the road we always seemed to struggle with Jenks, Linebrink and Dotel (when we last had a really good bullpen, the first half of 2008). White Sox traditions. -

Some very solid defense the last couple of innings out of Alexei Ramirez. Petricka, 23 hits in 16.6 IP.... .328 BAA isn't very good, lol. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 4, 2015 -> 08:29 PM) Garbage season for Melky. He's definitely becoming the Dunn 2011 signing equivalent for Hahn. 4/47 now against lefties, .085. That's even hard for pitchers not named Jon Lester to do. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 4, 2015 -> 08:25 PM) I believe rodon took a start off for personal issues, correct me if I'm wrong. Or were they just trying to limit his innings pitched this season? I didn't read anything about the personal issues. -

Cabrera 4/46 vs. LHP. (.087, 4 measly singles) Pablo Sandoval even went to swinging lefty today against LHP against the Twins. 3 steals for Eaton on the season. Ramirez leads the Sox with 7.
