QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:36 AM) This is unacceptable! WHO DOESNT KNOW HOW TO SPELL POSTPONED!?? IT IS NOT POST-PONNED!!! Personal attack, lol. Well, there goes my plan to have to wake up at 4 a.m. on a school day to listen to the broadcast.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:30 AM) Weakening unions so that police management can fire people who they deem "bad cops" more easily won't change what criteria police management uses to judge who's a "bad cop." I can't imagine that if police management actually wanted to curb these "rough rides" or if the CPD wanted to shut down their torture warehouse that the union would be the ones standing in the way. More likely, management either openly or tacitly approves of these sorts of things up to a certain point in the chain of command and then maintains deliberate ignorance and plausible deniability above that. And then, when, for example prisons are privatized....the abuses gradually worsen because there's even less public accountability.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:25 AM) Stripping officers of their collective bargaining power won't change police culture and police management's views. It would only make them feel more threatened and "cornered," just like making the same threats (taking over, whether it's the state or Federal government) against under-performing "inner city/urban" schools usually has the same effect on their staff morale.

The Nationals and Orioles hate each other. We already have hated Rizzo, for a long time, too. Part of it's the territorial rights issue, like the A's and Giants...with the Orioles feel the Nationals are encroaching on their natural territory. Another huge part of it is the fight about MASN...which is ongoing, and is at an impasse.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:17 AM) This was actually before they went to the mall. This was when they were showing the liquor stores, the cell phone store and the CVS being ransacked. Two different groups. The mall situation began at 3 p.m.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:19 AM) There are Republicans in California??? Have you heard of San Diego, Palm Springs and Orange County? Bullet Bob Dornan?

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:18 AM) I wouldn't think it was. But what about the stuff that never makes it to IA? Where they 'talk' the person into not pressing the case or something? I am sure there are a lot of incidents that don't get reported. I also know that there are a lot of made up cases of violence against cops, which I am sure makes it difficulty for IA and supervisors. During all that Occupy stuff, there were emails going around telling people that if they were arrested to claim they were beat up and/or otherwise abused, even if they weren't. it happens. So your example of police abuse (and accusations against) only apply to "left-leaning" groups? What about Ruby Ridge and Waco? Well, of course, that was all Bill Clinton and Janet Reno's fault, right?

QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:15 AM) digressing from what is on hand.... me thinks. Someone was trying to directly link the "police culture" in Baltimore with African-American leadership and/or Democrats. If that's true, logically....then white administrations where white officers are committing crimes against minority populations (such as Hispanics/Mexicans in the Southwest) are even guiltier.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:09 AM) That's a problem, and the best way to weed that out is City Hall forcing changes from the top down. Which again would be black democrats in a city like Baltimore. Like all the lovely jobs those white Republicans are doing in Texas, NM, Arizona and California policing the borders? http://news.yahoo.com/arizona-sheriff-resp...DQzXzEEc2VjA3Nj Like this jack---. Remember him?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:13 AM) On CNN last night they had someone on who said the average age of the looters was 16 or 17. Were they really looting because they all had built up tensions, or where they just taking advantage of the situation? I think the majority of people destroying businesses and starting fires, and throwing rocks and bricks at cops and firefighters weren't present during the peaceful protests. Those were all the high schoolers near the mall responding to the online "purge" invitation/s. Nothing specifically to do with the police brutality situation at all.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:02 AM) A culture that for a while now has been led by blacks and democrats, the people who supposedly have Baltimore's best interests in mind. So if the major or city council was white, like in LA during the Rodney King and OJ Simpson debacles...then it would make it, what, worse? Who was leading the city during the Rampart investigations? You're telling me that the culture of the police force is set by the mayor and Democrats? REALLY? http://article.wn.com/view/2015/04/20/Majo...gns_After_Firs/ If that's your example, then Parma, Missouri, is an easy counter-example to cite. Should I keep going?

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:57 AM) Clearly it is the retention of bad cops. How do we get rid of bad cops? Suggestions? Here's a GREAT solution. Part II: Repeat offenders (Oct. 2014): City officials, who say some lawsuits against police are frivolous, add that they are improving the systems that track problem officers — especially those who are repeatedly the subject of lawsuits. And police leaders pledge that officers who have recently sustained complaints of egregious behavior will be bypassed whenever possible for promotions. Note it didn't say FIRED or SUSPENDED or even INVESTIGATED by IA.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:45 AM) Bingo. Because we hold public servants like policemen, fire fighters and teachers to a higher standard. At least we used to. Not to mention that they're the ones in a position of power or authority. Pretty simple.

QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:37 AM) these are 2 totally different situation. the cops beating and killing of a prep, does tarnish the entire police force, and that is not right. the rioters and looters just show african americans doing it, and that is stereo typing the entire race. i still go back to the mother beating the shiiite out of his son. that goes unnoticed. why, b/c it is not promoting some one agenda. good tv. Even that video paints African-Americans with a brush of violence...even if we see it as harmless because it's an older mother "beating" her son, she's not talking him down or using logic, she's resorting to anger out of frustration, which is basically what defines some of the rioters (besides the opportunists).

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:18 AM) I there anything that the Baltimore Orioles COO can do about where official MLB merchandise is manufactured? Sure, their family is in the ranks of the billionaires now. Are they powerless? If they believe so strongly about this particular issue, then they could build a factory for New Era/Majestic/Rawlings/Nike in East or West Baltimore. Wouldn't that be the EXACT solution to some of the endemic/underlying issues that he's going on and on about? Now do you think fans would be content to pay $35-50 for hats that used to be $12-15 USD two decades ago? In order to protect and/or create more American jobs? Pretty sure I know the answer.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:08 AM) Well....not exactly. eta: also, on MLK: That doesn't mean he (MLK) actively planned or participated in any riots...just, at his weakest moments, sympathized with the emotions boiling under the surface. It's the reason why his tactics didn't work well in Albany, Georgia, because the police refused to engage or react or provoke. But that doesn't mean King was a traitor to the cause of non-violence. No way.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:04 AM) This is a statement by Oriole's COO John Angelos made over the weekend after they had the first issue at the ballpark. You know what Balta, take a look inside a New Era baseball cap and what do you think it says? MADE IN CHINA. If he really wants to make China the boogeyman (and that's his right as an American)...he should be careful to make sure his own house is in order first on this issue. I'm going to guess that 90-95% of the Majestic/Rawlings/Nike etc. t-shirts and jerseys are made in SE Asian countries. I'm going to guess that the Iphone that Mr. Angelos paid $600-650 for in the US (and that costs 33% more without nearly the service/warranty protections, despite the median wage being roughly 1/4th here what it is in the US, making iphones 6-8X more expensive here domestically than in the US, essentially) was made in Shenzhen/Guangdong, China by Foxconn workers earning roughly $200-300 per month sleeping on top of each other in rooms similar to broom closets. http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-arch...e-apple-factory While this story was retracted, 90% of it remains true, and there have been so many suicides at that plant (Japanese run) that they had to build huge netting around the top so workers couldn't jump off...those same workers who would patiently and diligently wait until payday to make sure their families at least received their wages before killing themselves.

The Rev. Jamal Bryant, a Baltimore minister who has been pressing for nonviolent protests over Freddie Gray's death, told CNN's Chris Cuomo minutes ago that it was a mistake for Baltimore city schools to cancel classes today. "Today, schools are closed, which … I think is a bad mistake. Because these are young people out. What are you going to do productive?” said Bryant, of Empowerment Temple Church. He said he's inviting students to his church today for two events. First is a one-day training session on how and why to engage in civil disobedience nonviolently. After that, he said he will take students into riot-damaged areas "to go clean up what is messed up." Though he pushes for nonviolence, people are rightly enraged over a "criminal justice system grossly slanted" against African-Americans, Bryant said. www.cnn.com Would be pretty surprised if they don't play today from all the scenes on television of kids and adults sweeping/cleaning up.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 07:21 AM) Dumping a problem for another problem is bound to be a wash. Danks for anything that would be worth Danks would be like that, whether for Bailey, Hamilton, etc. Agreed, although it will be interesting to track Giolito, Fedde, Hoffman and Matuella. Giolito and Harvey certainly appear to have suffered few side effects. We'll just have to wait and see with Jose Fernandez. With Strasburg, he doesn't seem to have returned to quite the same form he exhibited coming out of SD State.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/tommy-john-su...-in-the-majors/ We might as well forget about taking Brady Aiken. In the end, nobody knows with 100% accuracy what will happen...the charts/graphs certainly aren't as positive for TJ surgery recovery as the perception. Of course, for EVERY Gavin Floyd, there's a Mr. Harvey with the Mets, who seemingly hasn't missed a beat in his comeback. But if you’re curious about the typical post-surgery career for just those pitchers who do get back to major league baseball, the median games played was 102 and the median innings pitched was 167 for all major league pitchers who underwent the surgery between 1974 and 2009. Even these totals hardly make for exciting post-surgery careers. While the numbers are far from complete, it is also worthwhile understanding that of all major league pitchers who had Tommy John surgery in the past five years — who have had one to four seasons to theoretically recover (2010-2013) plus one to four seasons to theoretically contribute (2011-2014), the median contribution has been 29 appearances and 47 innings pitched. So: that mental math you do when it’s announced that a pitcher on your favorite team is having Tommy John surgery, when you picture them contributing at the same level as you’re used to one calendar year from then? It’s not as reliable as you may believe.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:50 AM) All I'm doing is taking the same statements these people want to put out about the rioters breaking the law and applying them to the people who broke the law and actually killed a guy. If these riots are uncivilized, if these riots show that the African American community is violent and undisciplined, then the dead body says the exact same thing about the police force. If you keep filling up gasoline tanks and throwing burning matches at them, yelling at the gasoline for exploding isn't going to be very productive. Except you're talking about a chemical compound that strictly will follow the laws of nature. Human beings not being able to control themselves....well, you didn't see them break discipline on the Edmund Pettus Bridge or in India during the Great Salt March. By and large, you didn't see it happen very often in South Africa in the 70's and 80's (Mandela/ANC) or even with Malcolm X's Nation of Islam before he was slain at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. It's understandable, maybe even justified in some minds...but that doesn't mean it's 100% inevitable for human beings to devolve into lawlessness, chaos and anarchy. Not with the right leadership.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:52 AM) TJ surgery worked out real well for Gavin Floyd. You can't believe the money the Sox owe Danks, yet want to add $55 million on top of it for a guy who won't even pitch for at least a year. So how exactly is using Gavin Floyd as one counterexample (and Ptac would tear it apart because the original problem was the screws inserted and the bone/muscle tearing apart, not TJ or ligament replacement surgery) supposed to prove anything? Many are arguing that Josh Hamilton for Danks would be a very good deal for the Sox, and, looking at his stats from 2012 on...there's very little to indicate that would be a good risk performance-wise, not to mention the likelihood of another relapse.

Baltimore Sun Investigates: Undue Force (Sept. 2014): Baltimore has paid about $5.7 million since 2011 over lawsuits claiming that police officers brazenly beat up alleged suspects. One hidden cost: The perception that officers are violent can poison the relationship between residents and police.
