QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 12:49 AM) You're stretching a bit on some of those. Have you seen May and Basto's numbers in Kanny? And most, at the moment, don't consider Black or Michael Johnson legit prospects. Some are big Wilkins fans here...but he's not exactly a crown jewel of any strong system, either.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 08:03 AM) You don't win executive of the year by moving contracts, you win executive of the year with wins. But Cherington clearing out Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Beckett went 50% of the way to his winning the award THIS YEAR. For the AL, Friedman, Beane and Antonetti are the other options for that award, with some probably giving it to Cashman, just, because...well, he has to deal with A-Rod. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 08:00 AM) Rios had his bags packed monday essentially so if his foot checks out I would be shocked if he wasnt gone. Heard no chatter on Reed, Dunn and De Aza whatsoever We've seen the last couple of weeks...unless you want to experience complete frustration in the starting staff, you STILL have to have some credible components at the back of the bullpen, especially with Lindstrom probably getting dumped on someone. At this point, with his contract (2013) at only $500K, he (Lindstrom) might be worth it more to us as a veteran stabilizer before the entire bullpen falls apart. Unless you can get something like a Top 3-4-5-6 prospect (see the Astros/Tigers deal for Veras) in a strong system, you probably are better off holding onto Addison Reed unless someone overwhelms you with an offer. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:53 AM) This was a hell of a deal for us. Peavy is an injury prone expensive starter and we got high upside prospects and our RF'er for next year moving forward. We also did this without paying a dime of Peavy's salary. Well done, so well done. If he could manage that with John Danks, then Hahn would be an early favorite for GM/Administrator of the Year, if you could simultaneously manage to get rid of Ramirez and Rios without eating any salary....or eating significant salary and getting back Top 75-150 level MLB prospects. (DeAza would be a great 4th outfielder for a contender, as well). Most of us would rather see the "prospect treasure chest" refilled for the immediate gratification, but surely the money/savings from Peavy and others (Thornton, possibly $1 million or so with Crain) will be reinvested eventually, when the time is right. -

Also why they drafted Barnum and Hawkins, to go along with Trayce Thompson... So you add Garcia with Viciedo, you're only now left trying to replace power at the infield corners...although the odds seem pretty high that they'll continue with the Gillaspie/Keppinger platoon until/unless they acquire a better/non-platoon option. Even Semien fits the profile (for now) of someone who could put up 12-18 homers (which is essentially what you'd expect out of a healthy Beckham). And we need some more pop out of SS. Jury still out on Phegley/Flowers for the next 58 games...and probably going into 2014 as well. Hopefully one of them will emerge as the clear winner. -

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 06:16 AM) On the bright side, this means we can shed about $40 million in payroll next season (could be more pending Rios and Alexei deals), and we got a slightly higher upside version of Tank to fill his position. Not bad. Since the Red Sox clearly STOLE this deal, I also think there's a bonus kicker where the Red Sox will force Ellsbury to sign with the White Sox in the offseason for a discounted deal Until Peavy breaks down again....well, actually, it would be pretty amazing if he stays healthy for the next 1 1/3rd or 2 1/3rd seasons, but we'll see. It wasn't too long ago they took Jenks and ended up with eggs on their faces. -

Two years ago, the Boston Red Sox do not make this trade. They do not give up Jose Iglesias and his metallurgical glove, they do not cede an A-ball pitcher named Frank Montas whose fastball pops triple digits on radar guns, they do not bother saying yes to two more prospects named Cleuluis Rondon and J.B. Wendelken. This trade happened because of the second wild card. If there is a compelling argument for watering down the baseball postseason, this is it: Teams really, truly, desperately want to win their division and avoid the one-game playoff between wild-card teams. And so the Red Sox, a half-game back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, dealt four players, none older than 23, to acquire Jake Peavy, the biggest on-the-market difference-maker who wasn’t going to cost Boston an arm, leg and internal organ to be named later. Peavy, 32, comes with a thick medical folder and a fat contract (about $20 million through next season), neither of which could overwhelm Boston’s biggest need: an impact pitcher. Clay Buchholz, the Red Sox’s ostensible No. 1, remains in disabled-list limbo. Jon Lester actually has the worst ERA among their starters, Ryan Dempster has pitched beyond seven innings in one of 21 starts, Felix Doubront in one of 19. John Lackey is Boston’s best pitcher. And if they plan on dueling with Tampa Bay (David Price, Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson, Chris Archer, Alex Cobb and a starters’ ERA of 2.21 with less than a baserunner an inning since June 23), the Red Sox needed more ammunition, something to counterbalance perhaps the most devastating offense in baseball. Though it is not in Boston’s DNA to sit around, the precision with which the Red Sox struck – waiting for Chicago’s price to come down, flirting with Cliff Lee and not giving up a single elite prospect – was impressive, another stealth move in a year of them for Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. Perhaps no GM is having as good a year as Cherington. Lest we not forget: The Red Sox were a blithering disaster at this point last season. Only a year and five days ago, Adrian Gonzalez sent the text heard ’round New England. Players were miserable. Bobby Valentine was a wreck. Internally and externally, the Red Sox were a joke. (SOUND FAMILIAR???) To go from that, the worst Red Sox season in more than four decades, back into contention a year later is a testament to Cherington’s maneuvers. He dumped $300 million of Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett’s contracts (thanks, Dodgers), actually got to hire the manager this time (and made the right choice in John Farrell), reinvented the clubhouse culture with free-agent signings (even if he overpaid) and made some excellent scrap-heap pickups (Mike Carp: .324/.387/.614). The Red Sox weren’t nearly as bad as their record last year indicated. Cherington wants to make sure this year they’re as good as the near-.600 baseball they’ve played all season. The Rays’ financial constraints prevent them from making a move like this, though it wasn’t just money that allowed Boston to pursue Peavy, Cliff Lee, Bud Norris and others. The growth of the Red Sox’s farm system over the last season has been staggering. Iglesias could go because 20-year-old Xander Bogaerts is big league-ready now and can take over at shortstop next season. If Will Middlebrooks struggles at third base, Bogaerts is an option there in the short term, at least until Garin Cecchini – “A lot like Alex Gordon,” one talent evaluator opined – is ready, which shouldn’t be too long. It’s them and Jackie Bradley Jr. and Henry Owens and Anthony Ranaudo and Allen Webster and Trey Ball and Blake Swihart and so many other prospects primed to turn this incarnation of the Red Sox into mid-2000s redux, when Boston’s farm system spit out prospects like a vending machine. Need a second baseman? Press B3 for Dustin Pedroia. With money and prospect capital to spend, the Red Sox looped in the Tigers, who needed a shortstop to replace the soon-to-be-suspended Jhonny Peralta, and got them to send outfielder Avisail Garcia to the White Sox as Chicago’s centerpiece of the trade. It strengthened Detroit, and Boston was OK with that, because October is a crapshoot. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/red-sox-motiv...-063933783.html -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 06:10 AM) Detroit was thinking that they are trying to win this year and their current shortstop is about to go away for 50 games. And that waiting for the official announcement/suspension/appeal would make a deal for a SS even more expensive from their standpoint...as they weren't willing to go with Santiago or Hernan (rookie 2B/SS). If he doesn't appeal, Peralta would/could come back five days before the end of the regular season. “But we would not have made a deal that we didn’t feel comfortable making to this magnitude unless this type of player involved was coming back,” Dombrowski said. “We always have thought that we might have to trade one of our young outfielders for another hole we would have for the future.” The White Sox assigned Garcia to Triple-A Charlotte. He doesn’t figure to play for them in this weekend’s series with the Tigers at Comerica Park. But Dombrowski knows that Garcia, 22, will play a lot of games against the Tigers in their Central Division match-up. The Chicago Sun-Times said Garcia was the key to deal for the White Sox. “Garcia is is a very young, five-tool player who already has spent time in the major leagues,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn told the Sun-Times. “Our scouts are extremely optimistic about his future and view him as a potential impact talent for many years to come.” www.freep.com/sports -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:55 AM) How many years is years ? Who before Mitchell ? I like Garcia , I like our what 12th ranked prospect just looked damn good in his start. And Erik Johnson is supposed to be better ? Sorry can't be upset today(yesterday). Well, there's Kenny Williams, lol. Joking. We had another group of four about a decade ago in Chris Young, Brian Anderson, Anthony Webster and Jeremy Reed. One of them turned out to be "decent," just not for us. Then you have Josh Fields (who essentially was a LFer/DH playing 3B) and Joe Borchard. If you want to say Aaron Rowand was toolsy and not a grinder/overachiever type, okay. -

Michael Joseph Papazian · Follow · Top Commenter · Danbury Hate to lose Garcia. Especially to the White Sox because that is who ended up getting him in the three team trade but Inglesias is a great shortstop and he has speed also. Looks like the Tigers lost Vallerial also. Hope this works out for them. Even if Jhonny isn't suspended he is a better option than Santiago and Perez to back Peralta up. Reply · 4 · Like · Follow Post · 47 minutes ago Tony Nacelewicz · Follow · Top Commenter We already have some infielders with good gloves that can't hit. We don't need another one. Diaz would have done just as good without having to give up Garcia. And we don't need him as a backup either. It doesn't make sense for young kids with potential to come up only to sit on the bench. That's why we have bench players like Santiago and Kelly. Garcia was going to be our right fielder of the future. Reply · 4 · Like · 23 minutes ago Mike Amarose · Top Commenter Tony I completely agree with u... We have 3 players on our roster that can do exactly the same things Iglacias does... Reply · 1 · Like · 28 minutes ago David Marlar · Top Commenter He'll like grow too big for center so he'll be a decent corner outfielder with a good arm, solid power, and slightly above average speed. He could develop more power and become a great hitter, but it's really tough to know at this point. He could fall back to earth and end up a 4th outfielder. The team clearly prefer Castellanos. Reply · 3 · Like · 23 minutes ago View 1 more Derek Dake · Marquette, Michigan I don't like it. Iglesias a proven big league shortstop? He hasn't even played a full year yet. He hasn't put together any type of offensive numbers even in the minors. We needed a shortstop for a few months, but I think we gave them way too much and got too little. This is a gamble no matter which way you slice it. Reply · 2 · Like · Follow Post · 36 minutes ago Jason Cline · Top Commenter I kind of agree. Hopefully they know something we don't. At least he'll be a stop gap this year and the next few years while we wait for JP's replacement. I like speed on the bases though. Reply · Like · 29 minutes ago Bob Frost · Top Commenter He may be your shortstop for the next few years, too. Jhonny is in a contract year, and will have declining skills from this point forward, since he wont risk a second pop for PEDs. And as such, his power numbers will come down to earth. He has no range, so the only thing that keeps him a positive is the pop in his bat. Which will now be gone. Reply · Like · 9 minutes ago Mike Cardinal · Follow · Grand Blanc, Michigan HORRIBLE TRADE Reply · 2 · Like · Follow Post · 23 minutes ago Steve Johnson · Top Commenter · Baker University News flash people we don't lack hitting. Peralta has had a great year no doubt but replacing him with a guy they say that has potential all-star defense in the event Peralta gets suspended is a good thing. This could improve us tremendously, yes Peralta is a good defensive SS on balls he can get to but there is no arguing he has just about zero range. This will really help our infield especially with guys like Porcello who gets the majority of the balls hit on the ground. If he can bat about .270 and just get on base, play above average defense, I am going to love this move. Although I liked Garcia and could see him come back to haunt us in a few games, when it comes to the world series pitching and defense pays dividends we have really made some strong moves to help that cause in the last couple days! GO TIGERS!! Tough moves but I think very smart in the long run. Reply · 1 · Like · Follow Post · 18 minutes ago Benjamin A Trujillo · Top Commenter · Mora High great trade, lov it! QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 07:58 PM) The Red Sox can afford it, and I'm sure the Phillies are throwing in probably around 20 million or so over the length of Lee's contract. Phillies probably got a really nice package by throwing in some cash. Lee and cash for Renaudo and Bradley is a done deal??? -
FWIW, Indians have now won 6 in a row to keep the heat on DET (Veras move, Verlander still struggling). A lot of it is about "attitude," I'll agree there with the Indians' announcers and Harrelson's TWTW.
-
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 07:50 PM) maybe my idea wasnt so far fetched after all, except for Tekotte being sent down before the game. Have nothing to gain by playing guys you want to move. Everything to lose. (Rios, Ramirez and Lindstrom) I thought we were trying to trade Keppinger and Beckham, still, lol? FWIW, we might as well start converting Casper Wells to short relief about RIGHT NOW. How can we survive without Lindstrom (aka David Riske/Frasor/MacDougal/Scott Linebrink post 2008)?
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 07:47 PM) Chances Rodon chooses Boras as his advisor? Would be typical if the White Sox drafted him (see Appel) and he refused to sign and went back in the draft in 2015. In other breaking news, Matt Lindstrom's 2014 option at $4 million just kicked in. Hallelujah.
-
Tigers are reportedly filing an official league protest against the White Sox for their current terrible bullpen which has ZERO chance of holding a late inning lead... Well, 24 games under .500 is a first for 24 years (1989), a longer-standing mark than half the members of the board have even been alive, lol.
-
Lindstrom's trade value has reached its zenith, lol. There's the answer to the previous question. Hanging slider from Lindstrom. Raburn is going to come back to haunt the Tigers, seemingly. HAHAHAHA. First Rios, now Lindstrom...the Ramirez error, comedy central.
-
This seems familiar from Veal this year. Maybe Lindstrom can blow out his shoulder or elbow here, lol. Giambi pulled??? Why??? Veal's giving up a .387 average against lefties, why would you want to PH Raburn against Lindstrom or POSSIBLY Reed (since Ventura will probably start giving him multiple inning closing opportunities, lol)??? WHAT?
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 07:34 PM) Semien 3-3, 2B, HR unreal He would be guaranteed to hit like Josh Phegley/Tyler Flowers for us. But call him up anyway, trade Ramirez and move Beckham if he's not traded to KC, lol. Who cares, anymore? Rienzo...all three of his runs were unearned, by the way.
-
Veal with his 11 walks in 14 IP enters the game. Biggest disappointment? Blue Jays or Nationals? Angels? Match-up LH who can't get lefties out to hold the lead. .387 average by lefties against Donnie this year, lol. Indians' announcers just PR'ed that Gordon is a Gold Glove caliber 2B. (Good job, Hawkeroo!) If the offense and defense aren't already nightmares, we can undoubtedly add bullpen rebuilding woes to the off-season list of debate topics, haha.
-
5 runs for the White Sox in the last four? Really? I guess beating 3.5 runs per game counts as a minor miracle. Dunn struck out seemingly three times there by Hill, but gets the benefit of the doubt due to his history of plate discipline before putting on a White Sox uniform, lol.
-
Jermaine Dye...isn't that how he broke his tibia/fibia in 2004, fouling a ball of his lower leg without wearing any protection there?
-
Rich Hill to face Dunn. Interesting that Dunn and DeAza actually looked okay against a crafty lefty in Kazmir (for a change).
-
Nice to have ANOTHER option to go along with Johnson for the rotation in 2014. This also gives the White Sox some additional leverage SHOULD they actually decide to hold onto Peavy. 1989....last time the White Sox were 24 games under .500 (were they to somehow lose) That statistic alone summarizes the season, as well as the relative success of the KW/Guillen years. Rios is either really hurt by that foul ball (LOL) or he was just traded. Would be par for the course with this season with what has happened with Floyd and Crain.
-
Tigers go up 5-1 with Alex Avila GS against the Nationals. Pressure shifts back to the Indians to hold serve. Interesting move by Ventura to leave Rienzo out there exposed to possibly taking a loss...sign of the times with our depleted/soon to be traded bullpen (Lindstrom). Considering the Hirschbeck/Ramirez error, Andre has done a super job and deserves to have a much better overall result than clinging to a 4-3 lead.
