  1. QUOTE (Andrew @ May 9, 2013 -> 12:05 AM) Only if they don't watch Caulfied show #AWESOMEWHITESOX Since The Great Gatsby is coming out Friday, maybe you should also pick up a copy of Catcher in the Rye so you can spell my name correctly, lol.
  2. http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/29486/chris-carter It is a bit ironic that one of the "better" hitters we produced over the last 5 years is putting up the strangest stat line this side of Adam Dunn 2011-13. Guess he would fit right in on the White Sox.
  3. By Dylan Hernandez, Los Angeles Times May 9, 2013 The Dodgers' president said Wednesday that the team's paying customers deserve a better on-field product than they've seen so far. "They've been extraordinarily supportive," Stan Kasten said. "We owe it to them to deliver." The team's new owners fielded an opening-day roster with a payroll of $230 million and spent more than $100 million upgrading Dodger Stadium. Fans responded by purchasing the equivalent of 31,000 full-season ticket packages, a franchise record. But Kasten said he is aware that the fan base's renewed enthusiasm could wane if the last-place Dodgers maintain their current form. "We're running a business and the business involves satisfying your customers," Kasten said. "It's job one on day one. It's always that. I'm always mindful." The owners share the fans' pain, Kasten said. "We're as disappointed as any fans are about the slow start and the difficulty we've had so far," Kasten said. "I'm expecting it to turn around and I'm looking forward to it, because nights like the ones we've had in the last couple weeks are tough for all of us." The Dodgers have already used the disabled list 14 times, but Kasten didn't use that as an excuse. "Obviously, we'd like to have back the players we have here," Kasten said. "But that's certainly not an excuse. We should be doing better with the players that we have." However, the owners don't appear to be in panic mode, as Kasten said he doesn't expect them to make any significant changes in player or management personnel any time soon. "I haven't even started thinking like that," Kasten said. "I'm still expecting this to all work out." Kasten said the Dodgers still have the wherewithal to make meaningful additions at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, if necessary. "We can do whatever we feel makes sense in the long term and short term," he said.
  4. QUOTE (Andrew @ May 8, 2013 -> 10:48 PM) Right, so all of this is bulls***. Nobody should listen to this. The Sox have had the ability to draft pretty high since 06. Instead, they sign agents that are always OLD, SLOW, big-name guys..... to get butts in seats. Don't challenge me, Caufield - I'll give you the list. The Sox have....... absolutly s*** in their system, perenially rated one of the WORST systems to bring up players. I don't even know what possesses you to chanllenge these facts..... You can say what you want, but as long as this team doesn't draft smart and groom, we can expect the same. Those same SLOW guys like Jermaine Dye and AJ Pierzynski helped us win a World Series, lol. If you want to attack Dunn/KW, be my guest. The Jim Thome deal was nothing but a good one for the White Sox. You can't play small ball at USCF on a consistent basis in the summer months and win, you have to have some thump in the middle of the line-up. Last year, we had five guys with 25 homers (Rios/Konerko/Dunn/AJ/Viciedo), and Youkilis as well. It's not coincidence we were in first place for most of the season with that kind of production, just like 2000. We've actually produced in the top 5-7 of all minor league systems since 1993 in terms of players drafted/developed by the Sox at least reaching the majors. But there are no superstars. However, there's no arguing what we did with our bullpen last season, and that almost entirely came from the minor leagues (Reed, Jones, Quintana, Santiago, Omogrosso, Veal, Septimo, Heath, J. Marinez, etc.) Pitching-wise, developing Brandon McCarthy, Daniel Hudson, Gio Gonzalez, Clayton Richard and Lucas Harrell, to name just a few, isn't bad at all. Finally, the only time they had a Top 10 pick since the late 80's was Gordon Beckham in 2008. If you think "pretty high" is 13th-26th, well, you don't know much about the MLB draft then. Sure, there's a Mike Trout here or there (at the end of the 1st round)...but 85% of the truly impact talent is usually in the first 10-12 picks.
  5. QUOTE (Andrew @ May 8, 2013 -> 10:37 PM) This a fan-board, right? If you have to ask, you're full of s*** too. Go to WSI. I invest in the Sox, year in, year out. Ok by you, Caulfield? Uh-oh. Well, I already got banned and then asked to be banned for life for defending my friend (who I invited to join because I was naive enough to think there was a "fair/fun" place to talk about our favorite sports team) from being attacked by the moderators there. I live in China, already. I don't need to be persecuted on a website as well, lol. Big Brother can stay at WSI forever. I'm sure that board is loans of fun these days as everyone in control is parroting Chris Rongey/Mark Parent lines of "just be patient."
  6. QUOTE (Andrew @ May 8, 2013 -> 10:26 PM) Who cares. You don't know s*** about Baseball. Are you really trying to get suspended from the board? I'm not a moderator, but what's the point of being so upset with other posters? Why even come here?
  7. As someone who's prone to do the same thing, there's not really any point in getting upset with VAFAN or cursing at him. Now every post has to present 3-5 "answers" to all the problems? I think that's the job of the front office, not a messageboard. There have been some good ideas or possible names (for 2014) mentioned in the last few days....McCann, Utley, Morales, etc. Everyone's frustrated, everyone's upset....and there are no easy answers or quick fixes. It's the same situation the Angels currently find themselves in, with a bloated payroll and the worst minor league system in MLB, worse than ours now. Even national baseball writers are begging us to dump Dunn without looking at the financial repercussions of that. THE MAIN POINTS: SOX have a solid core of young pitchers, especially if Danks can be a reasonable facsimile of past self. SOX have some extra pieces in the minors, relievers and veterans they can deal if they so choose. The only killer contracts are Dunn and Danks. SOX are basically in the same place they were record-wise to start 2012, it's just that DET is playing a lot better and the acknowledged favorite...and they proved down the stretch, head to head vs. the Sox, and in the playoffs they were the better team.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 8, 2013 -> 09:21 PM) The Angels went 10-9 vs. Texas last year and still didn't win 90 games. They won 86 in 2011 & 80 in 2010. They couldn't even win the Wild Card once. What does any of that have to do with the Rangers? Well, why haven't the White Sox gone to the playoffs for most of the last decade? It doesn't have anything to do with the Twins and Tigers? We will blame it all on losses to the Indians or Royals? When you have a great team in your division, doesn't that dramatically decrease your opportunity to make the playoffs?
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 8, 2013 -> 08:55 PM) They missed the playoffs in 2010, 2011, & 2012. Where was Torii Hunter's leadership then? Well, it might have something to do with the fact that the Rangers were arguably the best or second best team in baseball during that time period. By Mike DiGiovanna May 8, 2013, 7:40 p.m. HOUSTON — This time last season, hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was fired, a move that seemed to shake up the Angels and wake up an offense that had struggled for six weeks. While General Manager Jerry Dipoto wouldn't directly answer a question about the possibility of a similar move in a season in which Manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher have come under fire because of the team's sluggish start, he did not sound like an ax-wielding executive Wednesday. "There are a number of things that have gone wrong, and to put the onus on one person is entirely unfair," said Dipoto, who has also been criticized for several personnel moves. "We all got ourselves in this position. We're all going to find a way out." Ace Jered Weaver, center fielder Peter Bourjos and relievers Sean Burnett, Kevin Jepsen and Ryan Madson are on the disabled list, and the Angels played much of April without injured shortstop Erick Aybar and third baseman Alberto Callaspo. But the struggles of two sluggers have left big holes in the lineup, as Josh Hamilton entered Wednesday with a .202 average, two homers, nine runs batted in and 40 strikeouts, and Albert Pujols, slowed by a sore right knee and left foot, was hitting .231 with five homers and 19 RBIs. The Angels ranked 13th in the American League with a 4.68 earned-run average, blew five of nine save opportunities, stole only 12 bases in 20 attempts and committed an AL-high 26 errors. "We have a very talented group … and right now we've struggled in every facet of the game," Dipoto said. "We've had a variety of issues, most self-inflicted, some we've had no control over. "Whether it's a lack of consistency on the field or an inability to stay healthy, we've found ways to make life difficult. We have a long road to claw back, but we've been in similar circumstances before." The Angels were 18-25 last May 21, got hot and finished 89-73. But that team benefited from the late-April promotion of outfielder Mike Trout, the AL rookie of the year, and the early May trade for closer Ernesto Frieri. Don't expect a similar boost this season. The Angels have baseball's worst farm system, according to Baseball America, with few valuable trade chips, and there are no phenoms at triple-A. "There is no move to make," Dipoto said. "Our best talent, our best team, is here. There really isn't a quick fix, a magic bullet, a singular player move you can make that would turn things around." www.latimes.com/sports
  10. QUOTE (daggins @ May 8, 2013 -> 08:34 PM) The problem is that, by all accounts i've read, Phegley is barely a catcher. Might be inclined to give him a crack at some platoon DH though, since Dunn is somehow worse off than Flowers right now. Well, it's not like we have shutting down opponents' running games or making great pitch selection decisions...or blocking wild pitches, either. He has shown a good contact rate, but minimal power and a poor walk rate. The thing scouts seem to love most about Phegley is his makeup and work ethic. It is what put him above several other top catchers in the '09 draft along with his spectacular college production (Indiana). His level swing results in a lot of line drives, but is part of the reason why he hasn't shown big power. Behind the plate he has a good arm, but problems in other areas of his defense (though recent reports indicate improvement) www.chicagonow/futuresox
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 8, 2013 -> 08:44 PM) What exactly did Torii Hunters leadership get them? They spent big last offseason too and still werent a playoff team. So the whole difference is Weaver's out and Santana is gone? Has to be more to it than that. Or Hamilton's piss-poor start.
  12. Interesting situation. They don't have the pitching (Weaver's out), the bullpen's nothing like it was in the heyday of Shields/K-Rod, but when you have that kind of payroll, something better than 11 games under .500 is rightfully expected. Can losing Torii Hunter's leadership hurt THAT much?
  13. The Great Gatsby with 19 negative reviews so far and 15 positive. Never thought a Michael Bay movie (Pain & Gain) would outdo a Baz Luhrmann one. The ew.com reviewer gave it a B-. Carey Mulligan really needs to find another role that will test her acting chops. Moreso than emoting as Daisy Buchanan. Scar-Jo or Amanda Seyfried could just as easily do that.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ May 8, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) Much better pitch selection there, Crain is the rare reliever with 4 pitches. Make him a starter, haha. I remember when Thornton was campaigning to be a starter when he first was acquired for the M's. That would have been fun to watch, lol. Maybe Reed's trying to create a save situation for another reliever. Nice of him.
  15. Angels in danger of losing two in a row to Disastros, and in the process fall to 11 games under .500.
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ May 8, 2013 -> 06:53 PM) 2008 Quentin was destroying the AL almost single-handedly at that point...where you forget about everything else. That and the bullpen was as lockdown as it has ever been since 2005, until Linebrink went down.
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ May 8, 2013 -> 06:53 PM) 2008 Quentin was destroying the AL almost single-handedly at that point...where you forget about everything else. That and the bullpen was as lockdown as it has ever been since 2005, until Linebrink went down.
  18. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?s...&pid=572033 Phegley's OPS is over 1000 now.
  19. When's the last time Konerko was hitting .219 this late into a season?
  20. Amazingly, no runs scored for the Mets after another "how did they NOT score?" version of Keystone Cops.
  21. Well...HOPEFULLY that wasted run won't come back to bite them in the butt later, but you have a feeling this season that something almost always will. It will be interesting to see if the Mets take advantage now and score some runs here to tighten it up.
  22. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9255584/...ng-roy-halladay Ammunition for the "pitchers don't easily recover from shoulder problems" crowd. Although Danks has age on his side. BTW, Roy Halladay coming off this type of injury would be a typical KW pick-up. Incentive-laden one year deal with an option for the following season.
  23. http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?s...mp;ymd=20130508 Saladino's continuing to get back into the conversation. Semien impressing still. Typical Santos Rodrigez line. Taylor Thompson just keeps on trucking along...opening some eyes since the AFL selection.
  24. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 8, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) I said a couple of years for Top 20 prospect lists, not Chicago. Interesting either way. I am trying to think of the last South American player that has made their way to staying in MLB. The steroid era gave us production of Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Lee. Aside from that we really haven't had any big success. Fautino de Los Santos was a pretty good prospect. That's all I can think of... Through our system? Maybe Eduardo Escobar. Jesus Pena. A lot of other guys came through other organizations, guys like Leyson Septimo or Damaso Marte/Ozuna, going way back. DLS wasn't South American. And C-Lee/Caballo was Panamanian.
