  1. QUOTE (danman31 @ May 6, 2013 -> 10:11 PM) Thompson is where he belongs. You're right about the improvement over the course of the season, but he wasn't given an aggressive assignment. If anything, you'd hope a high school player would at some point be able to move more than one level per year. Otherwise, it will take 5-6 years for him to reach the majors, which isn't very ideal.
  2. QUOTE (danman31 @ May 6, 2013 -> 10:14 PM) I don't understand what dividing by ERA accomplishes. Well, it can make a pitcher with a lot of strikeouts (by my formula) but not pitching as effectively (ERA-wise) look worse...for example, Snodgress statistically wouldn't stand out, but most here are calling him our 2nd or 3rd best pitching prospect. Or it could do the opposite. A pitcher without gaudy IP/H or BB/K ratios could be made to look better because of a low ERA. Essentially, it's trying to screen for both pitchers putting up a good WHIP, high K's per IP and also lower ERA's, but combining it.
  3. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 6, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) There is no positive spin. I'm not going to harp on Hahn since this is his first go of it & it looks like we're in for a s***ty one this year, but Gavin should have been gone at the Winter Meetings. This is what happens when you over value your own players. Had Gavin stuck around healthy we'd have gotten much more than the insurance $$$ back in talent (even 1 year of a solid middle reliever can be worth $3-4M on the open market, and his trade value would have been much higher than that even if low overall) but either way we were looking at a mediocre return. Now we get nothing. Fine, whatever, but that makes it even more important that we get something out of our impending FA relievers. I guess if I would look for a positive spin it would be that Gavin's injury forces us to acquire more MLB-ready right-handed starting pitching sooner than later, so at least if that's the case we'll be looking to fill an area from an organizational scouting strength (if you forget about Molina anyway). Ugh. Damn it caulfield you brought me down with this post. I need a beer. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,7371618.column Phil Rogers addresses your point. However, in all fairness, it's easy to say in hindsight we should have traded Danks...it would have looked like we were giving up on the 2012 season. Although we were sort of sending that message when we dumped Sergio Santos. This is the problem with "timing" trades. We didn't deal Crede or Jenks while they still had value, Matt Thornton, now Danks and Floyd join the list of players we kept past their "due date" or shelf life. If anything, we tend to hold on to players TOO long. That loyalty thing. We did it with Jose Contreras. We also got almost nothing back in return for the likes of Jon Garland and Javy (jury's still out on Flowers).
  4. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3161458.story Game story from TRIB. Didn't realize there were 3 baserunning mistakes. Ventura wasn't too upset, blamed them on "hustle/effort" errors. Of course, it's easy to be less upset if the errors don't end up costing you the game. Still need to clean a lot of issues up if we want to be competitive this year.
  5. Reminds me of that Minnesota game he gave up a ton in the first, bowed his neck, and we came back and won. Arencibia homers with two outs in the top of the 9th off Rodney, 8-7 Blue Jays. 7-0 lead GONE...a bit of a shocker. We'll see if the Blue Jays can close it out...Mr. Janssen.
  6. Buehrle sort of righted the ship and got through 6. Still sporting an ugly 7.02 ERA. Blue Jays only down 7-6 now late, would be a huge comeback if they could somehow pull it off.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2013 -> 06:49 PM) How do you know how much they'll get back on insurance? Basing on the percentages with David Wells in 2001 and throwing out an expected range...but I don't know specifically. Wells was even more of a risk at his age and with his health history and weight, FWIW.

Ugh. Damn it caulfield you brought me down with this post. I need a beer. Don't forget Zach Stewart, haha. And don't count on getting much for Matt Thornton, beyond salary relief. We'll see with Crain, Lindstrom and possibly Nathan Jones (not saying trade him, just that they should listen to what's out there)... If Erik Johnson emerges as our top prospect and a #2/3 rotation candidate, we'll be fine. The bigger issue is what happens with John Danks. And right now, we can't be 100% certain about Santiago, Quintana or Axelrod...Quintana is the closest to a sure thing for 2014, though.
  9. QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2013 -> 07:39 PM) Micah Johnson--25 bags. On pace for around 130-132 steals.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2013 -> 07:46 PM) Kyle Hansen with a great outing He's the kid from St. John's, right?
  11. When's the last time we had an ideal #2 hitter? Iguchi? Orlando Cabrera?
  12. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ May 6, 2013 -> 06:11 PM) Why was Cose pulled with one out to go? did he get injured or something? 2 unearned runs for Cose. Probably due to pitch count and/or the fact that the reliever they brought in was a better match-up to strand the runner and keep the game close at that point. All DH's are only 7 innings in the minors, so that was a critical point in the game for the Dash.
  13. Tampa Bay, that new powerhouse of hitting, just put up 7 runs on Buehrle in one inning. Season ERA at 7.58 and looking like the new "worst contract in baseball." We knew he would struggle in the AL East, but this badly? S. Fuld singled to shallow left center - D. Jennings walked, S. Fuld to second - K. Johnson singled to deep center, S. Fuld scored, D. Jennings to second - R. Roberts singled, D. Jennings to third, K. Johnson to second - E. Longoria homered to deep left, D. Jennings, K. Johnson and R. Roberts scored - J. Loney doubled to right - S. Rodriguez struck out swinging - L. Scott homered to deep right, J. Loney scored - J. Molina grounded out to shortstop
  14. Odds to win the 2013 AL Cy Young Clay Buchholz (BOS) 11/4 Yu Darvish (TEX) 13/4 Justin Verlander (DET) 5/1 Felix Hernandez (SEA) 6/1 Matt Moore (TB) 10/1 C.C. Sabathia (NYY) 10/1 Jon Lester (BOS) 15/1 Anibal Sanchez (DET) 15/1 Doug Fister (DET) 18/1 Ervin Santana (KC) 18/1 Max Scherzer (DET) 18/1 Hiwashi Iwakuma (SEA) 25/1 Derek Holland (TEX) 33/1 Jim Johnson (BAL) 33/1 Hiroki Kuroda (NYY) 33/1 R.A. Dickey (TOR) 100/1 yahoo sports A few thoughts here: (Getty Images) • Whether any of them besides Verlander have a chance, it's neat to see four Detroit Tigers starters on the list. If you're a fan from another AL Central city, feel free to replace "neat" with another word of your choosing. No Sale or Addison Reed.
  15. The way I'm looking at this (to put a positive spin on it) is that the $3.5-4.0 million we're getting back in an insurance settlement is a lot more than we would have probably received back in talent...unless we really got lucky. Guess it's better than being stuck with Edwin Jackson. At least we're free and clear of every bad deal except for Dunn/Danks (at the moment). If you want to be mean, you can include Konerko for this season, and then new-found concern over Keppinger.
  16. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb...,0,512530.story It is a bit ironic that they were in first place when the Guggenheim group acquired them and they've been exactly .500 over the last year of play. Without Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, they would really be in a world of hurt. With all that money, they're still looking at using Andy Van Slyke's son at 1B, when every team in the majors could have claimed him for next to nothing.
  17. Yep, he's that final piece to put any team over the top (that move Dunn was supposed to represent in the 2010-11 off-season) but he's not the right move for the White Sox to make at this time. It's another type of "all in" move they simply can't afford. In the case of the Sox, you have to build the strongest (while being cost-efficient as possible) starting rotation and bullpen, then go from there in dealing the extra pieces on the depth chart. Then you hope and pray that guys Flowers, Phegley/Smith, Sanchez, Semien, the "FOUR OUTFIELDERS," etc., start progressing to the point where you only have to add 2-3 pieces, at most, from the outside.
  18. http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?s...mp;ymd=20130506 Cose the hard-luck loser in the early game. Still has a 2.14 ERA, though.
  19. Internet went out and I woke up again around 430 am and, lo and behold, the Sox were batting in the top of the 9th. Had to use my $35 NOKIA to check the game action...one by one, bases are loaded (in typical Sox fashion, of course we couldn't score with three consecutive singles), then there was the Konerko GIDP. It seems like it took 5-10 minutes to get an update on Ramirez's infield single, then trying to figure out how the runner didn't score from 2nd. Going into extras tied, fell asleep again and pleasantly surprised that we had won. Danks has had some big homers for us in his limited playing time. I think we lead the majors in hitting with RISP but those hits not resulting in RBI's (percentage-wise), LOL.
  20. Why is RIOS yelling something at our dugout?
  21. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 6, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) no hits. the funk endures. I miss Luke Hochevar. He even shut us down for two innings yesterday.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 6, 2013 -> 01:01 PM) They sent him to AAA as a 26 year old with about 1700 plate appearances in the majors. He did well and came back as a 27 year old really improved, something we have been taught at Soxtalk never happens. When has it happened with a Sox player we drafted and "developed"?
  23. You know it's bad when Wise is your most dangerous hitter. 7 for his last 14.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) He's the type of guy that can get overexposed if he has to play every day. No shock, but Tampa used him perfectly last season and he ended up also having a career year. To me, he looks incredibly weak all around. He's not driving anything at the plate, as it doesn't seem like he's getting his legs into his swing at all. Thing is, a lot of teams were interested in him this offseason. It was a logical move, with Morel's future, at best, cloudy to suspect. It's also the type of "halfway" move like acquiring Teahen that set us back in the future...paying players like Keppinger and Teahen has seemed to add up to becoming a dead weight on our payroll....along with the likes of Crain and Thornton, who have come closer to earning their salaries.
